Hi,
First, sorry if that question has already been asked. I've been unable
to find archives for that mailing list.
The build for x11/gdkxft fails on my nearly clean FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE
machine. I'm using XFree86-4.1 from the ports, and gnome from the ports
too. Everything is up to date, the system is only a few days old.
Here is the error :

I noted that the capplet-widhet.h file moved from /usr/X11R6/include to
/usr/X11R6/include/libcapplet1/ due to gnomecontrolcenter I think.
I will make a patch to get around this. Hold on...

Please try the attached patch, please put it in ports/x11/gdkxft/files
and make clean && make install clean and let me know if it works.

AbiWord will only build GNOME support if you have GNOME installed, you
define WITH_GNOME=yes in, say, /etc/make.conf, or you define
PACKAGE_BUILDING or PARALLEL_PACKAGE_BUILDING. If none of those
conditions are met, then AbiWord will only require Gtk+ and its
dependencies.
Try doing:
# cd /usr/ports/editors/AbiWord
# make -DWITHOUT_GNOME clean install
And see if that works for you.

This is updated only periodically. If you want up-to-the-second port
info, use http://www.freshports.org.

Try these patches for gnome--. Apply the Makefile.patch to
/usr/ports/x11-toolkits/gnome--/Makefile. Stick
patch-scripts::ltmain.sh in /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/gnome--/files. Do a
make clean install, and see if it works.

Looks like libpng might be out of date. Verify you have png-1.2.1
installed. If you do, try reinstalling it. If this is -CURRENT, you
may need to upgrade to the latest CVS version to fix some problems with
binutils.

I followed your directions for patching gnome-- and it worked.
I also applied your patch by hand to gnomespell (remember, it was
giving me the same problem) and that worked as well.

It's working now.
May be a message to inform that compiling without gnome needs this
option will be nice... I don't have gnome and the default seems to be
compiling for gnome.

Yes, I use it often, but it is easier to go to the page
ports/editors.html than to click more times ;-))))
(I can't remember the numbers for
http://www.freshports.org/port-description.php3?port= nnn easily )
Thanks

Since adding -DWITHOUT_GNOME worked for you, I wonder if
/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-config exists. If it does, all ports that
WANT_GNOME will try to build GNOME dependencies.

If you want to keep abreast of the AbiWord changes, you can always add
AbiWord to your FreshPorts watch list.

Great! Can one of the GNOME committers update the gnome-- and
gnomespell ports to use GNU_CONFIGURE and not USE_LIBTOOL, and add
Maxim's ltmain.sh patch? Remember, ltmain.sh is in the scripts subdir
for gnome--. Thanks.

Would any of you be interested in taking over the gaim port (or I could
just make maintainer gnome@)? It's becoming quite a pig and I don't
really have the interest or the cycles to spend on it at the moment.
Let me know...

I use gaim, and wouldn't mind taking it up unless people feel it should
be something taken under the gnome@ umbrella.

FYI.
Note: Strange, I occasionally found that message in my sobomax@mail.ru
spam collector I'm usually using to register with various online
services. For some reason despite having CC: gnome@FreeBSD.org it
didn't get into the list (I suspect that @iname.com is banned from
freebsd.org).

Glad to be included on such a friendly list! I'm not yet a FreeBSD
maintainer, and I don't even have a FreeBSD machine at this time. My
contributions to GNOME and the FreeBSD ports are mostly indirect and
relating to their implementation for TDC and GNU-Darwin.
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/tdc.html
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/ports
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/ports/pseudo/
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/download.html
I also implemented the ports and package systems for the Darwin-x86
architecture on a remote machine that was provided by one of our
developers, and I automated the building of x86 packages. (It is down
for the holidays.:-)
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/x86/
I would enjoy the opportunity to assist with GNOME maintainance for
FreeBSD using the ports system, and to give back to two of my favorite
free software projects, if you will have me. If you will excuse my
un-conventional approach, the above caveats, and my inexperience with
FreeBSD itself, then I could utilize remotely one of the computers
that
have been offered for this purpose. It is not unlike what was
required
to build our popular GNU-Darwin GNOME distro with the ports system.
I have some ideas about expanding the list of GNOME ports, if
appropriate, in order to maximize their functionality through
bootstrapping.
If this is acceptable, then please direct me to the appropriate
machine, with the correct account access priviledges, and where to
send
the packages and CVS the code. Perhaps you have some standard ops for
ports maintainers that I could read.
Once again, thanks for including me in this interesting discussion.
GNOME is perfect for me.

Michael L. Love

I told you that already, and I told you that it's not an easy problem to
fix... I'll fix it when I get a chance. They never were being built
with the system CFLAGS, but at least now they're being built with the
right compiler and the right thread flags. Not having them built with
CFLAGS is not a disaster - find something better to do with your time.
The only way to fix it is to do an ugly patch with a sed script to force
the CFLAGS into the makefile. The right fix is to make NSS use
autoconf/configure, which will hopefully be accepted back by
mozilla.org.
Regards,
-Jeremy

Hi,
After a number of reports I decided to investigate whether the reported
problem with gnomeprint package is real or not. I found that indeed,
there is a Latest link for gnomeprint, but no actual package in the All
subdir.
Following log illustrates the problem:
max@vega# ftp ftp.freebsd.org

230- Please check the below URL to see if you have a closer mirror,
230- especially during releases of new versions of FreeBSD, the load

230- get better transfer rates from your local mirror.

230- Specifically should all mirrors not mirroring directly from the master

This package :
./packages/All/gnomeprint-0.34.tgz
is on disc #1 of the ISOs on the ftp sites. I'm pretty sure this is
installed whenever you select Gnome from the desktop menu of
sysinstall, which means I've successfully installed it dozens of
times. Although, I don't think I actually use it. ;)
This just looks like a problem in the transfer to the FTP site or
something. I think Steve did the actual transfer. Do you know how
this file got left out, Steve?

Folks,
I would like to get a general agreement on the following iconv
conversion plan worked out based on the recent thread and private
conversation with ache. I'm proposing to do the conversion in the
following order:
1. All `g'-hacks are removed from the GNU libiconv port and similar
`b'-hacks added into the BSD iconv port. All ports that use BSD iconv
are switched to the GNU libiconv. In addition `#define LIBICONV_PLUG'
is added into GNU iconv.h, which makes ABI the same in the resulting
libiconv.{a,so} and libbiconv.{a,so}. Also it is proposed to tweak GNU
libiconv's Makefile to create during post-install a
libgiconv.{a,so}-->libiconv.{a,so} symlinks and giconv.h header, which
would include and produce a warning a la malloc.h. This
would allow us to avoid breaking all things at once and do a gradual
removal of the `g' hacks from the various ports in the tree.
The appropriate HEADS-UP sent to the freebsd-ports with the plea to
all maintainers to remove `g'-hacks from their ports.
2. Once `g'-hacks are removed from the majority of the ports in the
tree compatibility symlinks are also removed from the GNU libiconv
port. Remainning unconverted ports are identified and fixed.
3. GNU libiconv is switched to use dynamic loading after a throughout
testing (GNOME et al).
Does this sound reasonably? If yes, then we need a volunteer to do the
step (1) above. Ade told that he currently works on libiconv, perhaps
he will take this task as well to avoid the need to merge someone
else's work. Ade?

The issue is under investigation right now. It seems that for some
reason gnomeprint package was lost in the process of transferring
files to the ftp download location. I'll let you know when it is
resolved. If you have 4.5 release on a CD you can find gnomeprint
package here at the disk #1.
Thank you for reporting.

All of the above sounds entirely reasonable (cunningly enough, with the
exception of the giconv.h - use iconv.h - hack, it was pretty similar to the
way I'd envisaged it).
I'm happy to deal with this, but it's going to be at least until next week
before I can start hacking - I'm currently in SFO doing RealJob[tm].
Give me until the end of next week, so I can get back home in front of my
devel box, update my tree, nuke GNOME, and then start working on the
necessary patches. In the meantime, I'm quite happy for others to start
work on this, with the provisor that the patches are sent to me first rather
than direct committing to the tree, so we can do this as painlessly as
possible.

-aDe

Hmm, works here like a charm. Which version of libtool port you have
installed? Latest version is 1.3.4_2 - check that it's exactly the
version installed on your system and update if necessary. Let us know
if it did not help.

And please don't forget to bump libgiconv.so major to libgiconv.so.3 since
dependent (not converted yet) applications needs rebuilding after #define
LIBICONV_PLUG added.

Please check two things:
1. That bonobo port installed on your system is the latest version
available from the ports (1.0.19). Update if necessary.
2. Check that you don't have several Bonobo.h files in your
/usr/X11R6/include (find /usr/X11R6/include -name Bonobo.h) - remove
superfluous one if necessay.

Dear gnome@freebsd.org,
You are listed as the FreeBSD port maintainer for 1 port
whose distfiles [or main web pages] are not fetchable from their
MASTER_SITES. Could you please visit
http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/gnome@freebsd.org.html
and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with
a problem is converters/psiconv.
Note that the main port web page, as listed in the WWW: line
of the pkg-descr, is checked just as though it was a port distfile.
This is an unfortunate side effect of the architecture of the distfile
survey reporting system, but if you see a distfile being reported as
not fetchable that's not actually a distfile, see if it's from the
pkg-descr.
If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a
PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the
fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does
not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been
submitted. Please do *NOT* submit your response to me directly; I do
not always have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR
via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost.
Problems are usually of two types:
1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the
port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to
upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package.
If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port
directly. If not, you should create the new port on your own system,
test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr"
to submit a "diff -uNr old-port new-port". If you added or deleted
any files, please make an explicit note of it.
2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package
in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include:
a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site
from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site
isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade)
b) If the README or other support files in the software
documentation mention where to get the software package,
use one of those sites.
c) Use ftpsearch (http://ftpsearch.ntnu.no/ftpsearch) or other
search engines to find another place to get the original
DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles
mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file
exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out
the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why.
Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the
Makefile.
Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to
build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror.
Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time.
These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is
committed, as a reminder.
Thanks,
Bill "distfiles" Fenner.

The ORBit include files have moved to /usr/local/include/orbit-1.0,
but the sodipodi makefile doesn't have this path, so the build fails.
Just thought you would like to know... I added the path and it builds
fine.

I just upgraded everything on my system and I'm still having trouble
with vim, AbiWord, and open-motif-devel. The problem with vim is one I
can fix by changing the install.sh script it comes with by forcing it to
link against the X11 library. For some reason it does not pick up that
it's required:
$ gvim
/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libXThrStub.XmbResetIC" not found
The other two are executing `mkdir /' at install time. This fails:

Unfortunately I have no idea what I might have done to cause these
failures. As far as I know I'm following all the suggested steps to
build world and ports, i.e. there is nothing added to make.conf, etc.
Sincerely,
Pete...

Please ask portmgr@freebsd.org to undo, or otherwise fix what ever commit
they made to bsd.port.mk that broke having PREFIX=/ for binary ports.

I was asked by David to write to you about fixing this problem. There
are at least two ports which depend on being able to execute `mkdir /'
at install time. This command fails like so:

Hi!
I'm trying to install gnumeric from the latest port
(distinfo file reading
MD5 (gnumeric-1.0.4.tar.bz2) = 358667153706bd93a6dd7cf20e3d6bb4
)
make fails with the message you'll find in make.log
I use freebsd 4.5:
FreeBSD sankukai.ice-age.org 4.5-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE #0: Sat Feb 16
14:08:18 CET 2002
root@sankukai.ice-age.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SUPERSONWINE i386
I send you config.log too, it is the content of
work/gnumeric-1.0.4/config.log in case it helps...
Hope you can tell me why there is no 'langinfo.h' on my box :)
Regards,Jerome
