I want to be able to use a "Frederic Engineering" serial data analyzer under FreeBSD. The unit (under W98) connects via a PCMCIA card which allows a data buffer in the unit to be uploaded to the PC for analysis. I'm willing to (re)write the analysis software -- as this is a project I just undertake anyway. What I want is to be able to suck up the data. Questions: 1) Is there an easy way to monitor W98->PCMCIA card transactions? I guess I'm asking if there is a ktrace clone which works for this application. 2) How hard is it to write a user-land (or lkm) module to provide access to a PCMCIA card interface. Thanks for comments/suggestions. NZ DSL suffers from the PPPoA problem of useless bridging support, so some "routers" may only port forward a few specific ports - this is ok for joe user but sucks if you want to run a non-braindead gateway behind the router. For FreeBSD this could be something like IPSec /FreeSWAN. I know the Cisco 827 suffers from this - you can terminate VPNs on it but if you want to bridge it you're out of luck. The point here is you need to think what services you may want to run on the boxes inside the router. If your needs are simple you'll be ok with just about anything, if not you need to investigate more carefully. Firstly forget any non external ethernet based ones, not worth the trouble. The Nokia M1122 is pretty good - but as I say, its days are numbered in NZ and its fairly expensive. The D-link is inexpensive and will bridge most stuff afaik (note I am not using bridge in its strictly technical sense here) but is fairly new on the market - so it doesnt have much of a track record. From the other answer it may be problematic - I know of users using it - without problems - but only for the last month or so. Its a pity you dont have the option of cable where you are - I run paradise 128 in front of a FreeBSD gw /server and I have had 0 outages or other "brownouts" so familiar to xDSL users, in 3 months continious usage. The list at: http://www.unixathome.org/adsl/ may be helpfull, as would the other comprehensive nz adsl site - whose URL I cant remember at the moment - anyone? I believe that this is trigged by losing the contact to the wireless server. Somehow,
the dirver dies and left some recovering status in configuration register on the card
(just guessing).
When wi driver sees this status after reboot or power cycle, it will not reset
the card regardless power on or reboot. This may leave the card in some unknown status.

MS Windows does not try to look such status, and just re-initializes the card. So,
if BSD cannot recover the wi0, boot to window, then boot back to BSD, and wi0
will work again. If this is the case, then above guessing will be true.

Hi,

Have you ever found a problem with Orinoco and Avaya wireless card like
this:

/kernel: wi0: xmit failed
/kernel: wi0: watchdog timeout
/kernel: wi0: init failed
/kernel: wi0: failed to allocate 1594 bytes on NIC
/kernel: wi0: tx buffer allocation failed
/kernel: wi0: failed to allocate 1594 bytes on NIC
/kernel: wi0: mgmt. buffer allocation failed
/kernel: wi0: timeout in wi_seek to 0/0; last status 4000
/kernel: wi0: timeout in wi_seek to 0/44; last status 4044

It's happening after 1 or 2 hours working normally and only after reboot
(without turn off, like M$ Windows) this card return to work.
