You may be better off with a new ATI or Matrox card, which have drivers that come with XFree86 4.x (A new ATI card has probably the best speed amongst the open-source driver'd cards.) BTW, I've moved the mailing list to freebsd-hardware as this really isn't a freebsd-stable issue. As far as i know, you need to be root to access this device. Is there any way for a non-priveladged user to access this besides setting the user id on the binary? The reason is because I need to communicate with an application owned by a non-priveladged user, and write that information to the parallel port. I can't set the user id, because then I can't access the application since it isn't owned by me. Quite apart from minor irritations such as increased bandwidth and the necessity to open attachments some people seem to have the mistaken impression that the practise of sending messages via a PGP signed attachments somehow adds to general recipient security rather than diminish it by encouraging careless attachment usage. It may be important to remember the general principle that the customary opening of attachments is inherently more risky than a plain text message for the recipent even when PGP signed. The less secure the operating system of the immediate recipent the more risky the practice. Viruses, which may not be able to infect a primary recipient often reach their targets by being forwared from a primary to a secondary recipent on a more vulnerable platform. I suspect its a popular card in FreeBSD land so by that very nature you are going to see more "problem" reports even if those reports have nothing to do with the fxp and more to do with other issues (e.g. hardware interaction between the card and the MB, PE, etc). Think of it this way: Lets say for arguments sake 1% of all FreeBSD problem reports are a result of pilot error and erroneously blame the NIC and or the NIC driver. And again for arguments sake lets say 100,000 FreeBSD users out there. If 30% use the Intel, and the next most popular card is lets say the realtek at 5% FreeBSD market share, the realtek will "seem" like a more reliable card since there are less problem reports. Using the sample numbers above, we would see 300 erroneous reports for the Intel vs. 50 reports on the realtek. Long story short, be careful about looking at the raw numbers of problem reports as an indicator of how reliable the NIC is. ---Mike At 10:21 AM 09/07/2002 -0600, Ken Gunderson wrote: >Greets All: > >during the 4.6rc era i recall there were issues with intel ether >pro and fxp drivers, particularly with smp boxes. I find this makes for more convenient plumbing in some circumstances and is not necessarily any more expensive. Admittedly, there is no intrinsic support for serial<->USB adaptors in -stable, but the code I use for talking to them via UGEN can be found at http://www.arg1.demon.co.uk/freebsd.html The adaptors that I use can be found at http://www.dontronics.com/usb_232.html No particular merit to these over any other (if you can find driver support) - I just used them because I was using the same chips in another project. Not sure if this would work for my UPS requirements, but it would certainly be good enough if I am able to connect to another FreeBSD box this way, or to the other network devices we have there for OOB. ---Mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Jul 9 13:45: 9 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 547AE37B400; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 13:45:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: from palrel10.hp.com (palrel10.hp.com [156.153.255.245]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7470643E42; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 13:44:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kgunders@hpb50341.boi.hp.com) Received: from hpbs5002.boi.hp.com (hpbs5002.boi.hp.com [15.2.216.28]) by palrel10.hp.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B343C00314; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 13:44:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from kasilof.boi.hp.com (hpb50341.boi.hp.com [15.56.24.166]) by hpbs5002.boi.hp.com with ESMTP (8.7.1/8.7.3 SMKit7.02) id OAA08908; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 14:44:49 -0600 (MDT) Received: by kasilof.boi.hp.com (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 58DEEBA84; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 14:44:36 -0600 (MDT) Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 14:44:36 -0600 From: Ken Gunderson To: Mike Tancsa Cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: intel etherexpress pro and fxp status?? The 82557 has a receive side bug that can cause it to stop receiving, but this isn't caused by it being 'overwhelmed". The problem is supposed to only occur when using them in 10Mbps mode, although it can happen if the link changes state as well. The FreeBSD driver has a work-around for this problem and it the bug shouldn't exist in newer Intel chips in any case. -DG D.G.Lawrence Download Technologies, Inc. - http://www.downloadtech.com - (866) 399 8500 TeraSolutions, Inc. - http://www.terasolutions.com - (503) 288 9544 The FreeBSD Project - http://www.freebsd.org Pave the road of life with opportunities. Remember also people post to the list when they have problems. No one posts, "Hi, I am using the fxp and dont have any problems. Thanks, bye." The only threads I remember around this were some people with specific problems on specific SMP motherboards. I dont recall any mass problems with the fxp cards... For what its worth, we have deployed some 50 servers on various MB incarnations in the past 4 years ranging from 440BX chipsets to recent 845s and apart from the hardware bug that dg@root.com noted and _one specific_ (VIA 82C598MVP) motherboard which would crash with intel nics in them, we have had excellent results with the fxp driver. YMMV. That being said, if you are just doing experimenting and network performance is not important, 8139 based realtek which you can probably buy at $5 each might be fine... YMMV For production boxes, I would go with Intels. Our news server for example has a good 30Mbit/s of traffic on it 7x24 and has Intel nics in it. The NICs, the OS all perform like champs. ---Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Tancsa, tel +1 519 651 3400 Sentex Communications, mike@sentex.net Providing Internet since 1994 www.sentex.net Cambridge, Ontario Canada www.sentex.net/mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Jul 9 19:33:45 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A94F537B400 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 19:33:41 -0700 (PDT) Received: from web13604.mail.yahoo.com (web13604.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.175.115]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 26A3C43E42 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 19:33:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from bzdik@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20020710023340.35634.qmail@web13604.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [12.225.219.108] by web13604.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Tue, 09 Jul 2002 19:33:40 PDT Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 19:33:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Bzdik BSD Subject: RE: intel etherexpress pro and fxp status?? For what its worth, we have deployed some 50 The SMP problems also turned out to be nothing to do with the fxp cards and everything to do with shared interrupts. But cards which generate a lot of interrpts show this up well, hence it first showed up on FXP and has been misrememberd by people as the "fxp problem". just make sure you arent sharing interrupts on an SMP box and you will do fine. -pcf. I posted instructions for a do-it-yourself MFC of the ucom driver suite. With that, you can use the IoGear GUC232A, which so far as I know are fairly available. It works well enough for me to make PPP links over my cell phone data cable. Joe K tells me he is planning to MFC the whole thing when he gets done with a sub-driver for the Visor hotsync gizmo. If you really insist on a PCI card, I suggest the Specialix SX card/module system. Each card can support up to 32 ports and a single system can support up to 128 ports. It works pretty well. I used to work for Specialix and did a little bit of maintenance on the si driver. :-) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Jul 11 15:21:12 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C6D737B400 for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 15:21:09 -0700 (PDT) Received: from bsd1.rgptech.com (adsl-64-163-15-235.dsl.sndg02.pacbell.net [64.163.15.235]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0507543E3B for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 15:21:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from root@bsd1.rgptech.com) Received: (from root@localhost) by bsd1.rgptech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA02516 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 18:21:08 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from root) Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 18:21:08 -0400 (EDT) From: GordonP Root Message-Id: <200207112221.SAA02516@bsd1.rgptech.com> To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: anybody out there?? Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I have an old machine that was running FreeBSD 4.1.1, with a single disk, and I wanted to upgrade to something current. It has one of the RZ-1000 IDE controllers on board, so FreeBSD 4.6 installed just fine, and then failed to boot as it would not find the disk - it complains about the controller: "RZ 100? ATA controller !WARNING! buggy chip data loss possible". So, fine, get a Promise Ultra100 TX2 PCI/IDE adapter, put it in, connect the disk, install runs fine, finds the disk as ad4. Reboot, the controller finds the disk, the boot manager prompts: F1 FreeBSD Default: F1 and then it hangs for a while and then says "Read error". I checked the troubleshooting guide, and it mentioned that I might need to set the disk geometry manually in the disk slice configuration. Tried that, same problem. Since the controller sees the disk, and I'm getting the boot manager prompt, I'm guessing that the boot manager is trying to boot off a non-existent onboard ad1 disk or something? Any suggestions? Or should I just break down and buy a better motherboard? Thanks very much!
