What might it be ? faulty processor ? Faulty power-supply > ? any clues ? how to test ? The program-driven memory testers are at best rather bad at finding memory problems. Candidates, not in any particular order: o Overheated processor(s) o Overheated or faulty memory o Faulty or overloaded power supply o Faulty line power from the wall o Flaky motherbord (_Highly_ unlikely) and, inevitably, o "Other" Problem Determination and Isolation techniques: o Processor: run healthd or another voltage/temperature monitor to watch voltages and temperatures. Check all fans for good speed. Remove lint, cat-hair, etc., from heat sinks.[1] o Faulty or overheated memory: Check fans, etc., as above Take . memory to a store that has a hardware memory tester Remove one . SIMM at a time, reboot, wait . o Power Supply: Check DC power with voltmeter and oscilloscope. Replace PS if you _think_ there might be a problem with it or if it is anywhere near capacity. They're cheap here: about $100 will get you a very-high-capacity PS. o Faulty line power: Put the server on a known-good UPS. o Flaky motherboard: Replace motherboard (absolute last resort). [1] Cat hair in my house appears to be attracted preferentially to CPU heat sinks. -- Mike Andrews mikea@mikea.ath.cx Tired old sysadmin since 1964 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Mon Mar 4 6:21:48 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from bilver.wjv.com (spdsl-033.wanlogistics.net [63.209.115.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C534637B405 for ; Mon, 4 Mar 2002 06:21:45 -0800 (PST) Received: (from bv@localhost) by bilver.wjv.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g24ELiI32444 for freebsd-isp@freebsd.org; Mon, 4 Mar 2002 09:21:44 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from bv) Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 09:21:44 -0500 From: Bill Vermillion To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Sendmail prematurely failing send attempts Message-ID: <20020304142144.GB30857@wjv.com> Reply-To: bv@wjv.com References: <20020304123302.S71173-100000@arnold.neland.dk> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20020304123302.S71173-100000@arnold.neland.dk> User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.25i Organization: W.J.Vermillion / Orlando - Winter Park Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Mon, Mar 04, 2002 at 12:38:40PM +0100, Leif Neland thus spoke: > > On Thu, 21 Feb 2002, Andre Fortin wrote: > > I'm running sendmail 8.11.6 on a FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE system. And if you look in /etc/periodic/daily there is a file called 150.clean-hoststat that references the file /var/run/.hoststat, so in a default operations things will usually recover overnight. Possibly a stupid question: are you doing... @ cname new.dom. - or - @ in cname new.dom. ?? If you think about it, you might conclude that the only place that should be doing a cname on (for example) domain.com (that address exactly) is the .com TLD zone file, rather than the domain.com zone file - since there's no hostname. Then again, at 3:45am I may not be thinking right at all. Let us know if you correct your problem! There is no difference. The default class is always IN (Internet) and no even remembers the other non-Internet classes these days. You fact is, you can't have a CNAME for any domain, if that domain also has other records. Why? Becasue a CNAME is essentional a re-write (replace X with Y). A second level domain will always have a SOA record, and at least two NS records. The best way to handle this is with an include file. Now I dont know if this is even valid anymore but it was something like this: DEFAULT Auth-Type = System Service-Type = Login-User, Session-Timeout = 360000000000000, Login-Service = Rlogin, Login-IP-Host = the.login.host.ip Now I belive that was for a radius daemon from compaq just for the portmaster. Your Radius Server man pages should contain all the info you need to setup yours to do the same. Now if you mean that you wanted a FreeBSD machine to auth via a radius server. I know PAM has radius support. I hope that helped a little. -- Jason Fried To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Mon Mar 4 11:26:50 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from workhorse.iMach.com (workhorse.iMach.com [206.127.77.89]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D830337B400 for ; Mon, 4 Mar 2002 11:26:46 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (forrestc@localhost) by workhorse.iMach.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id MAA27613; Mon, 4 Mar 2002 12:21:32 -0700 (MST) Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 12:21:31 -0700 (MST) From: "Forrest W. Marcel, I had a server doing just that (PIII-733, 768MB RAM, Tekram SCSI with 2 drives, Intel 440BX, 4.2-STABLE with softupdates). What "fixed" it was to recompile the kernel, taking out SMB and I2C. I later upgraded it to 4.5-STABLE, and it still runs fine. Unfortunately, I can't experiment with the server to see if in actual fact it was the SMB and I2C components that were the culprits, so I don't know for sure what caused the spontaneous and frequent reboots. -- Juha Take off every sig! We tried it out for a few weeks but conculded that it didn't bring us any significant benefit over existing free tools (nocol, perl-expect, rrdtool,...) This was one year ago, here's what I remember, it may be biased. The GUI is buggy and painfully slow. Both the fat-client and the so-called webinterface. That webinterface is a huge java applet for which you need a top-end PC with at least 128megs. It must be extremly frustrating having to work with that while the clock is ticking during an outage. For configuration management, it allows to make changes on multiple devices at once, keep versions of the configs etc. But all that can easily be done as well, if not better, with a few perl/expect scripts and rcs. Moreover, the latter allows to be intergrated with your database, cgi-scripts, cronjobs etc. It may be useful for your devices for error conditions, you get a nice view of the device with all cards and leds etc. But it is not a monitoring system that reports alarm conditions like nocol. For instance, you can't get a view of your entire network. -- Wim Livens. If you only have 6-12 network devices to manage I can think of several open source tools that will do the job. The only real high point I see with it is it gives us a layer2 view of our switched ethernet/atm network. Oh yeah, did I mention that it really helps to be in a Cisco heterogeneous world? One of my big griefs with it is I can't get to the data that is stored in it's database. Cisco doesn't want you to get to that data except via it's web interface. diana eichert by day an enterprise management analyst at a large US gov't research facility by night a softball/soccer/volleyball nerd To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Thu Mar 7 0:16: 9 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mail.voljatel.si (mail.voljatel.si [217.72.64.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63A3837B400 for ; Thu, 7 Mar 2002 00:16:06 -0800 (PST) Received: from pxna.hide.voljatel.si (pehta.voljatel.si [217.72.64.8]) by mail.voljatel.si (Postfix) with SMTP id D5C6B53507 for ; Thu, 7 Mar 2002 09:15:59 +0100 (CET) Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 09:18:09 +0100 From: Damir Horvat To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: amanda backup Message-Id: <20020307091809.4eede439.damir@voljatel.si> Reply-To: damir@voljatel.si Organization: Voljatel telekomunikacije d.d. I would doubt it as well since RC gets the path from the local_startup directing in /etc/defaults/rc.conf which "apparently" is being parsed when rc is run. On reboot (when things aren't being run) the settings in /etc/rc.conf are obviously being parsed since all the interfaces are available to connect to the box remotely via SSH. This would imply (to me, perhaps incorrectly) that rc is finding and using /etc/defaults/rc.conf since that tells it to parse the /etc/rc.conf in the rc_conf_files="/etc/rc.conf /etc/rc.conf.local" line. The line above that is the local_startup="/usr/local/etc/rc.d /usr/X11R6/etc/rc.d" # startup script dirs. line... logic would dictate that if it is parsing lines below this, then it should have parsed this line as well and should know where the local_startup directories are. (not using X so no idea if that is being processed). If it was pathing related, then rc running manually should show the problem, no? The fact that manually runing each script in the rc.d directory or running rc loads everything normally is boggling me. Annoyingly facinated. If you can't figure out what is going on why don't you add some debugging outputs to /etc/rc. Something like this ---/etc/rc--- # For each valid dir in $local_startup, search for init scripts matching *.sh # > echo "local_starup: $local_startup" case ${local_startup} in [Nn][Oo] | '') ;; *) echo -n 'Local package initialization:' slist="" for dir in ${local_startup}; do > echo "dir: $dir" if [ -d "${dir}" ]; then for script in ${dir}/*.sh; do > echo "script: $scipt" slist="${slist}${script_name_sep}${script}" done fi done script_save_sep="$IFS" IFS="${script_name_sep}" > echo "slit: $slist" for script in ${slist}; do if [ -x "${script}" ]; then > echo "running: $script" (set -T trap 'exit 1' 2 ${script} start) fi done IFS="${script_save_sep}" echo '.' ;; esac ---/etc/rc--- then reboot and see what you see. This will help you understand what is going on. Perhaps you have managed to screw up local_startup in rc.conf oder something else. You will find out if you will try to trace ... Something like this > had already done that, but the problem was the server being managed remotely, as such we do not have access to console output and none of the RC output is appearing in any of the logs (messages/dmesg) including any debuggong. However (brainfart) redid the echo statements and pumped them into a /var/log/bootdebug file, then did a reboot. on reviewing the display that we now have... apparently it is choking on the postgres startup script. Thanks to all how have offered advice on this matter. Dave To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message
