It's very cheap on the used market (see ebay or the list @ isp-equipment.com), and with capacity at over 1000 ports in a 10U chassis, it's very compact. The components it uses are the same as used in the APX8000, so there's a clear upgrade path, and I expect that Lucent will continue to develop for this platform for quite some time. The only gotcha, is that firmware past 9.0.x will require a service contract. -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks 540.994.4254 - 866.477.5638 http://www.psknet.com > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG] On Behalf Of FreeBSD isp > Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 3:04 PM > To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > Subject: digital signal processor > > > I can't find a newsgroup or google search on pros-and-cons on > v.90 servers. > > I presently have a Livingston (oops Lucent) PM3. > > Is there any other brand out there which performs more reliably with > the v.90 protocol, or are all about the same? > > -- > FreeBSD isp feed directly mailto:paz@qcislands.net > > > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Mon Aug 19 12: 7:58 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DC8B837B400; Mon, 19 Aug 2002 12:07:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from taka.swcp.com (taka.swcp.com [198.59.115.12]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3369343E3B; Mon, 19 Aug 2002 12:07:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from deichert@wrench.com) Received: from inago.swcp.com (inago.swcp.com [198.59.115.17]) by taka.swcp.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with ESMTP id g7JJ7otR089559; Mon, 19 Aug 2002 13:07:51 -0600 (MDT) Received: from localhost (deichert@localhost) by inago.swcp.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA20113; Mon, 19 Aug 2002 13:07:50 -0600 (MDT) X-Authentication-Warning: inago.swcp.com: deichert owned process doing -bs Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 13:07:50 -0600 (MDT) From: Diana Eichert X-Sender: deichert@inago.swcp.com To: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 4-port NICs In-Reply-To: <007701c245f1$026e4090$0301a8c0@prime> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.1 required=10.0 tests=IN_REP_TO,X_AUTH_WARNING X-Spam-Level: X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-milter (http://amavis.org/) Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Sat, 17 Aug 2002, Charles Swiger wrote: > From: "Ryan Thompson" > > I'm looking for a good 4-port NIC for use in replacing a firewall that > > joins four networks. "x" only works that way on files. "x" on a directory allows the owner to search the directory. Limiting execute access is not going to stop your incoming area from becoming a warez haven. In fact, any sort of sane FTP server isn't going to allow you to execute files by default anyhow, and there a lot of ways to prevent non-FTP (shell) users from seeing the anonymous incoming area. Most FTP servers have an option to apply a specific mode to uploaded files. Many sites use "0000" to ensure that uploaded files can't be downloaded by anyone, until an admin changes the mode. Can anyone in the UK reading this list recommend a specific DNS registrar in the UK for reliability, ease of transfer of domains, management of DNS (small scale for now, but do want to be able to control DNS)? I'm currently reading over 'godaddy.com' who I've heard are reliable, well organized and easy to use, but am wondering if somewhere in UK exists on a par with them before 'signing up'. I've recently been stung (it appears so far if lack of mail response is anything to go by) by 'oneandone.co.uk', a front-end for the German registrar 'schlund.de'. Attempting to have authority for the domain delegated to my own name servers is proving hard with them: oneandone - we can't do it, talk to shclund schlund - we can't do it talk to oneandone etc etc Much obliged for any info/headsup on pitfalls to avoid that anyone can provide. we are quite happy with DC-100 RAID from Dawicontrol:

  http://www.dawicontrol.com/english/html/raid100.htm

it's using the Highpoint chip "HPT370" which is supported by FreeBSD.
It has it's own bios to do the initial setup (no disks required).

The price is around $50,- !!

Lutz Rabing

How long does it take for a rebuild with the DC-100?

You want to use 3Ware Escalade Controllers,

Following up on a pretty old message, but in case anyone is interested, I just got FreeBSD running on a RLX System 324, Transmeta Crusoe 633Mhz blade[3] and learned a few interesting things (RLX sent me a document "Installing FreeBSD on a RLX Blade"[1] that details how to use PXE -- essentially a more detailed version of the "FreeBSD Jumpstart Guide"[2]). Please let me/freebsd-isp know if you learn anything new and exciting about the RLX blades as they are a very compelling, dense, server solution. A few notes: - the version of the BIOS I have has an option Advanced->Console Redirection->Remote Console that should be set to Off -- this forces the serial console output to go to the RJ45 serial port on the front of the blade (make sure you set console=comconsonle in /boot/loader.rc). The other settings are as outlined in [1] under "Prepping the RLX Server Blade" are correct -- stuff like: Advanced->Console Redirection->Com Port Address = On-board COM1 ->Baud Rate = 9600 ->Console Type = PC ANSI ->Flow Control = None ->Continue C.R. after POST = On - the CPU Type in Kernel for the Transmeta Crusoe is "i586" (a Pentium III will run with just i686 in the Kernel but the Crusoe won't) - I managed an install using PXE as well as simply removing the 2.5" drive and installing onto it in a laptop... - all three ethernet interfaces are fxp and work at 100baseTX/full-duplex - unfortunately, there is no nice cable solution for the RJ-45 sio0 serial ports which are on the front of each blade. RLX had this to say when I asked about connecting to the "internal" serial console on each blade from the master blade using the "rlxconsole" utility under RedHat which would avoid the necessity of having physically wired RJ-45 consoles on each blade: > Unfortunately, you will not be able to use rlxconsole on any other OS than > our supported ones (Redhat Linux and Windows 2000 Server). We have only implemented > this functionality on our supported OS'es, Linux and Windows. it would be great if they provided a way to do that on other OS'. On the whole, other than the serial console thing, the unit is very nicely made, seems to function well, and the Master blade/Control Tower is pretty nice for RedHat and Win2000 blades -- I suppose if I had net-snmpd running, it probably could even retrieve some info from the FreeBSD blades. 1. I emailed support@rlx.com and told them I'd like to run FreeBSD and they sent me the document (I'm not sure it's entirely public as they don't want to give the impression that they "support" FreeBSD officially) 2. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/pxe/ 3. dmesg with an install kernel shows: FreeBSD 4.6.2-RELEASE #0: Wed Aug 14 21:42:02 GMT 2002 murray@builder.freebsdmall.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/BOOTMFS Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 Hz Timecounter "TSC" frequency 633361560 Hz CPU: Transmeta(tm) Crusoe(tm) Processor TM5600 (633.36-MHz 586-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineTMx86" Id = 0x543 real memory = 251592704 (245696K bytes) avail memory = 236609536 (231064K bytes) Preloaded elf kernel "kernel" at 0xc081c000.
