[Steven Wright] http://www.FreshPorts.org/java/jdk13/ Add a pre-build target to check for a setting of WRKDIRPREFIX which will result in the InvokerGen.java target failing. The bootstrapping Linux JDK will confuse itself if WRKDIRPREFIX also exists in /compat/linux as a symbolic link to the directory in the standard FreeBSD hierarchy. While I am all for using the formal process I believe firmly in starting small. I take "small" in this case to mean "start vi (or emacs) and write the text first". If some of the text I (and others and possibly you) wrote is quietly recycled in the FreeBSD documentation project that's fine by me. I'd be happy to ditch my pages once the text is safely in FreeBSD's CVS. However. The core of the problem is lack of time to write the text. Never mind the formatting or which CVS it's in. :) > > It would be useful to get the GNATS maintainer to add a new > category in the database for "java". > Perhaps you could file a PR to this effect? We agree on the value of the FreeBSD documentation project. I am just worried that you are on your way to do things a tad too well, and that you'll bog down in details and project organisation--type issues. What if you'd get ssh access to my web server, with CVS to my web pages. You could edit my text directly. Easy peasy. :) Kees Jan ===================================================== You can't have everything. Where would you put it? This is hard to translate into English, but approximately: Without having specific knowledge about this case: The Linux emulator, first looks in the /compat/linux file hierarchy for a file/directory, if it's not found, then it looks in the root (and FreeBSD hierarchy). Basically, the Linux JDK is trying to absolutely resolve the path of the file and the symlinks confuse it. This is partly due to how emulation works. To give a concrete example. If there is a file in /usr/tmp that its trying to compile and /compat/linux/usr/tmp is a symbolic link to /usr/tmp it will basically get into a loop like this: Resolve /usr/tmp -> Emulation layer checks in /compat/linux first, finds /usr/tmp there. -> Resolve /compat/linux/usr/tmp. -> /compat/linux/usr/tmp is a symbolic link to /usr/tmp. -> Back to top of loop. Matt has a nice truss trace that shows the syscalls happening for this instance. Eventually the JDK gives up and errors. Let me know if that isn't clear and I'll ask Matt if I can forward the explanation he sent to me. The commit was to try and stop this happening at least some of the time (its not perfect, but should catch the common cases). -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : At first I was quite encouraged, it started up exactly as it does under Windows (same splash screen, etc). The main screen comes up and it starts counting the files in your library. Looks very good at this stage (performance looks great, actually). During this, you can launch a search or go between the tabs just fine. At some juncture later (while still counting media files it can find in the path you've configured) the VM bails out. This can either be a SIGSEGV or SIGBUS type failure, but it is usually a SIGSEGV. The count of files within Limewire display a count total of 2700 and that's where it fails. I have exactly 3028 files in the path it is searching. No filenames (I am aware of) that could trip up the application. I am using the Pro version (which I bought) which isn't (functionally) any different from the freeware one except that there aren't any advertisements. Limewire doesn't officially support FreeBSD (this is a "Linux" build) but they say it will run on JDK 1.3.1. A special environment var is required for Limewire. This is a known problem: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/36951 Or at least is similar to one :). There is a workaround (run with java_g instead of java), but no solution yet. The argument of stability probably is still in favor of the Linux JDK at the moment. But the native JDK is stable enough for most things and we always need more people using it for testing purposes. Your installation of OpenJIT seems wrong. How do you install OpenJIT? You cannot use FreeBSD's port or package for OpenJIT because they are tailored for JDK1.1.x. Therefore, you should make and install it by your hand if you need OpenJIT for JDK1.3.1. -- Fuyuhiko MARUYAMA Matsuoka laboratory, Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences, Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology. The argument of stability probably is still in favor of the Linux JDK at the moment. But the native JDK is stable enough for most things and we always need more people using it for testing purposes. Right now, the FreeBSD build of the JVM is going through a certification process with Sun, which means that we can't ship it, and Sun won't post it either until the process is finished. Until then... it takes some work. Below are the steps you need to follow in order to build your own JDK 1.3.1 JVM for now. You cannot legally distribute the JVM you build yourself. Make sure your "ports" tree is up to date before proceeding. You can update your ports tree through the CVSUP mechanism described at: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html Steps #3, #5, #8-10 will need to be done as root. 1. Visit http://www.sun.com/software/communitysource/java2/ and manually download the Java 1.3.1 source code. You have to register and log in to do this. 2. Make sure the filename is saved as "j2sdk-1_3_1-src.tar.gz". 3. Put the file in /usr/ports/distfiles/. 4. Visit http://java.sun.com/Download5?config-file=j2sdk-1_3_1_03.config&platform=linux-i386 Download the Linux GNU Zip/Tar (tar.gz) version of the Linux JDK 1.3.1.03. Make sure the filename is saved as "j2sdk-1_3_1_03-linux-i386.bin" 5. Put the file in /usr/ports/distfiles/. 6. Next you will need to download the "patchset", which is coordinated by Greg Lewis, one of the committers. It is available on his website at: http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsddom/java/index.html 7. Download the patchset and make sure the filename is: "bsd-jdk131-patches-6.tar.gz". 8. Put the file in /usr/ports/distfiles/. 9. 'cd' to /usr/ports/java/jdk13/ 10. type 'make install' 11. Read the terms and agree. 12. The build should start, go do something else for a while. It will take quite a while before the compile is finished. Once the compile is done, it will be installed in /usr/local/jdk1.3.1/ At this point you can configure your environment to use the JDK however you prefer. I always put a symlink /usr/local/jdk/ pointing to whatever version of the JDK I want to use on my system globally. Then I have (at a minimum) PATH set to "$PATH:/usr/local/jdk/bin". It's probably a good idea to also set your JAVA_HOME variable to the same path you use in PATH. If you regularly use any third-party classes or JAR files, be sure to set a CLASSPATH variable accordingly. If you have any compile problems (you shouldn't) let us know. I've had problems with jade and sgmltools bailing out because of catalog problems (even though I'm pretty sure I have fixed the catalog). The 'docproj' port does anything but work out-of-the-box. :) Currently I am getting the docs for JDK 1.3.1 started up based on the source material I have right now (KJ's docs, the mailing list, PRs, Greg's website). Initial form is plaintext, using a structure as close to the Handbook as I can get it. These should have be done by Sunday. Once finished, they will go out to the team for review. It's going to be a while before I grep DocBook fully. I need a mentor on the FDP for long-term reasons, not just related to Java. There are no plans for me to be "The Man" for java docs. I'm hoping to contribute enough to bring us up to date, get the docs pushed into the FDP, then see where that leads us. You can give me some pointers on how the doc needs to be improved for the FDP, and do the final DocBook markup on it. I think the Linux JDK 1.4 will crash on FreeBSD unless you run it as root (ouch). There have been some discussion of this on the list, I suggest reading the archives for more information - hopefully someone has a workaround for this. The native jdk 1.4 saw the first commits yesterday. Its far from even being a patchset candidate at this stage though. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Jul 5 12: 6:21 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 176B837B400 for ; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 12:06:19 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns3.ideathcare.com (mail.allneo.com [216.185.96.68]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 93E5E43E31 for ; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 12:06:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jps@funeralexchange.com) Received: (qmail 58841 invoked by uid 85); 5 Jul 2002 19:13:31 -0000 Received: from jps@funeralexchange.com by ns3.ideathcare.com with qmail-scanner-1.03 (uvscan: v4.1.40/v4121. . I have tried running it both as root and the user www with no success. I can not even get the example jsp pages to work with the package. Would anyone be willing to point me to a way to debug (gdb?) the core files so that i can find out exactly what is causing the crashes so i can post it back to the list? I am using 1.4 with Tomcat 4.0.3 and i am not having any problems with it running as either www or root so this has to be something specific to Orion. Also i am able to use all the sample jsp's and ejb's with the native jdk 1.3.1. Thanks again.
