That sounds like the problems I'd expect with the current code. OpenBSD has a few things that might help that I've not had time to investigate merging in. If you really need something soon, then you'll need to look at what Todd Miller has done to the wi driver in OpenBSD wrt symbol support. Otherwise, I'll get around to it as my quest for a *BSD unified wi driver moves forward. Do you have set the network name (-n)? Some (may be most) type of the card requires to configure the network name (-n, not -q) in advance it enters the IBSS creation mode (-c 1). The Story So Far: i've been looking at the tanimura newmidi code most intently lately. strange as this may seem, that lead me to: 1. look at pnpinfo, 2. discover that it appears to be *broken*; it always sez that it cant find any pnp devices even tho the compiled in 'options PNPBIOS' code finds plenty. this code finds and boots the ESS ISA AudioEngine OEM chip without fail. 3. decide that fixing pnpinfo a. is virtuous :-) b. moves forward my midi agenda by hopefully allowing the removal of some device detection code that is in the newmidi stuff. 4. conclude that the pnp code /usr/src/sys/isa/{pnp,pnpparse}.c should be reimplemented as a KLD. 5. decide to find another good example to work from 6. pick apm as a good example because it behaves in a way that i'd like to see pnpinfo behave... 7. discover that apm isnt a KLD either. :-( 8. wonder why apm isnt a KLD... 9. decide to ask list. so...'sup with that? is the only reason that apm isnt a kld is because nobody's done it? or does it have tendrils into too many things (apm_ioctrl() is a significant chunk of code ) for this to be possble or practical? likewise, is there anything in the way of making pnp a KLD? i am betting not, because there isnt a device for it in LINT or /dev, the only way it shows up is if you put options PNPBIOS or something in your config file straying further into vapourous work that i havent done yet... it seems to me that the program name 'pnpinfo' should be deprecated and the program should be called pnpconf ( like pciconf ) and follow pciconf's semantics as much as possible. pnpinfo would simply become a wrapper around 'pnpconf -vl' or something. and, taken to absurdity, would there be a perf hit if *everything* execpt malloc() and free() (showing my WinNT/WinCE professional experience here :-) ) where implemented as a KLD? tnx for listening! feedback appreciated... johnu -- John L. Ok, with Steve Woodford's patch to the x86emu, I'm up and running using the VESA driver, with 1024x768x24BPP. The i810 driver SIGSEGV's. Where do we go from here to get the i810 stuff working? When I worked for an ISP, we got rather sick of GateD and it's various bugs and the horror of configuration, and so we switched to Zebra. I believe it's in the ports collection now. It's fairly easy to setup and use, and tries it's best to present a Cisco-like interface via telnet for control and monitoring. It supports BGP, OSPF, and RIP, last time I checked. I believe John has a patch for APM that I promised to test a long time ago that fixes much of this. Note, if APM didn't get loaded before someone used the APM utility, bad things would happen, but this is no worse than disabling APM. The problem is: the installation freezes (usually quite early in the installation process, doing /bin or something), and after a hard reset (power off + on), the darn craptop has "PlatinumPAS - PreBoot Authentication Services Verify" enabled.". This is a protection mode which needs a valid smartcard to unlock the computer, which makes the BIOS not let you boot from anything. I didn't ask for it to get enabled, and the smartcards I got with the computer are not valid. I can't even boot a floppy at that stage, and I don't know of any way to fix it except send it to Acer for repair (already did it once, I'm not happy about doing it once more in one week). I'm planning to stop using this laptop (since it belongs to my company: ask them to throw it to the junkyard or something), unless there is some neat trick to disable the PlatinumPAS thing, or if there's a solution to making -current not switch it on. In the meantime: my advice for all Acer TravelMate users is to not use or try -current on them. Cheers, -- Anders. Now I upgraded to 4.4 and it just keeps timing out anyway, even using fa_select doesnt help... Before ifconfig couldnt seem to initialise the card so I would just set the ip and then use fa_select to bring it up.. Now ifconfig seems to be able to initialise the card its self, but not properly since I constantly get "ed1: timed out" messages.. Is there some flags I can pass to ifconfig to make it do what it did in 4.2 that might make it work again? Or maybe some that will initialise it properly?? Any ideas would be great! Thanks! If I rerun 'wicontrol -p 3' it works again. This is FreeBSD 4.5 as of 2 days ago, and the latest Lucent drivers as of about 4 months. (Latest Lucent f/ware too) Any s3kr1t config options I should twiddle? :) I also have another Lucent card and if I try that in the fbsd box I get no communication between them at all :( If I reboot the windows machine into FreeBSD the two lucents work fine (no repeated wicontrol -p 3 necessary). If I use the DWL-650 card against the lucent with both machines in FreeBSD it works fine also. -- Daniel O'Connor software and network engineer for Genesis Software - http://www.gsoft.com.au "The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from." -- Andrew Tanenbaum GPG Fingerprint - 9A8C 569F 685A D928 5140 AE4B 319B 41F4 5D17 FDD5 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu May 2 1:26:29 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from www.golsyd.net.au (golsyd.net.au [203.57.20.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C7A737B404; Thu, 2 May 2002 01:26:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [203.51.9.142] by www.quake.com.au (NTMail 4.30.0012/AB6169.63.5324aadf) with ESMTP id ztffaaaa for ; Thu, 2 May 2002 18:26:38 +1000 Message-ID: <3CD0F7F0.9000802@quake.com.au> Date: Thu, 02 May 2002 18:25:20 +1000 From: Kal Torak Organization: Quake Networking User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.9) Gecko/20020311 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: FreeBSD Stable Cc: FreeBSD Mobile Subject: Re: pc-card ethernet problems since upgrade from 4.2 References: <3CD08EE6.8030605@quake.com.au> Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------060605010007070705010803" Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------060605010007070705010803 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Kal Torak wrote: > Hi, > > I have an IBM Thinkpad I series (model 2611) and a D-Link > ethernet pc-card (DFE-650) which was working ok under 4.2 > but had to use fa_select to stop it from timing out... > > Now I upgraded to 4.4 and it just keeps timing out anyway, > even using fa_select doesnt help...
