I'm running FBSD 4.4 and trying to load the X environment only (no KDE, Gnome, ...). On startx the monitor pops, then there's a brief glimpse of X (about a second), then the big disappointment - nothing. A couple of days ago I had KDE running passibly, but now, trying to run just the X environment, xserver fails. I'm confused. I've been through the XFree documentation on http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS3.html, and played around with the options listed there, but still no X. One interesting option btw is the (**) SVGA: Option "xaa_benchmark" -- see below -- which dumps the extra benchmarking data to the bottom of the startx dump (starting at "CPU to framebuffer ..."). I don't know if this benchmark data is useful. My questions could be summarized as follows: 1. Why does X work with KDE, but not without? this seems a little counter-intuitive 2. At the end of the startx dump, what does "^M" mean? curious 3. Anyone tried Xfree version 4.x? I'm going to try Gnome, WindowMaker and Blackbox next, but I thought I'd try and get some answers regarding X first. startx --------- XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) Release Date: xx November 2000 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems.
