All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. =20 FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. =20 FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. =20 One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: =20 When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. =20 Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. =20 You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. =20 Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. =20 If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. =20 Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. =20 Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. =20 FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. =20 Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! =20 If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. =20 Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html =20 Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. =20 But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. =20 The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. =20 One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. =20 So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ =20 To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies:=20 Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message.=20 =20 Mail sent to freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org appears on the mailing list. _________________________________________________________________ --------------------- Patrick Fish - patrick@pwhsnet.com PWHS Networks - http://www.pwhsnet.com ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Defryn, Guy=20 To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG=20 Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2002 12:02 PM Subject: Kernel visual screen I have installed FreeBSD and it turns out that my networkcard does not = show up.    Maybe your = question has=20 been asked before. If you search the mailing
list = archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search= .html=20 first you might
get the answer right away. It's always = worth=20 trying.

   Other mailing = lists
   (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS)
=20 cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented.=20 You'll
need to read their charters carefully before=20 participating, but it's
probably a good idea to ask on = either=20 -newbies or -questions for
advice about where to post a = more=20 specialised question.

FreeBSD-announce = is a=20 very low volume read-only list for occasional
= announcements,=20 such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick
   = Newsletter.=20 It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too.
  =20
Manuals

You'll always be expected to show that = you have=20 made some effort to
use the available documentation = before=20 asking for help. That's not
always as easy as it=20 sounds!

If you know what documentation = you need=20 but can't locate it, send a
brief query to = FreeBSD-questions. If=20 you don't know what you need,
always have trouble = finding it, or=20 can't make any sense of it when
you
do, ask some = patient=20 newbies to steer you in the right direction.
   =
=20 Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for=20 FreeBSD
is
encouraged to join the FreeBSD = Documentation=20 Project. Details are at
   http://www.freebsd.o= rg/docproj/docproj.html
  =20
Other resources

A resource list is available=20 at
http://www.freebsd.= org/projects/newbies.html=20 to help new and
inexperienced FreeBSD users to find = relevant=20 information quickly. It
includes books, on line = documents and=20 tutorials, and links to web
pages that other newbies = have found=20 useful for learning. If you have
a
suggestion for = good=20 material to be included, please write to
   freebsd-newbies = and=20 tell us about it.

But I have seen people asking = questions=20 here!

It is quite common for people to send the = wrong kind=20 of post to a
mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll = certainly=20 happen here from
time to time. The best thing to do if = you see a=20 message that doesn't
belong on a list is to ignore it. = There's=20 always someone around whose
job it is to sort these = problems out=20 privately.

The posts to the lists go = straight=20 through, whatever their content.
It
is going to be = confusing=20 for a little while because we're all newbies
so we all = make=20 mistakes. That's OK.

One thing we're = going to=20 see a fair bit is people posting questions,
believing = they're=20 doing the right thing by posting here as newbies,
not = realising=20 how it works. If someone answers those questions the
= situation=20 will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping = someone
to
=20 redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do=20 so
gently.
There's nothing wrong with the occasional = mistake=20 either.

So all questions, requests for = help,=20 etc still go to
freebsd-questions
as usual. Ours is = more of a=20 discussion group, a place where newbies
can relax with = other=20 newbies and focus more on our successes than on
our = temporary=20 imperfection. We can talk about things here that = are
not
=20 allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make = the
=20 mistakes that we need to make in order to = learn.

It does not seem to recognize my keyboard and therefore does not go into the kernel configuration, where I need to remove the atkbd0 to enable the USB keyboard(From webpages). Thus, I am unable to continue the installation in the regualar way. To get around this problem, I plugged in a ps/2 keyboard (additional - so there are two keyboards on the machine) and then installed FreeBSD. I would like to know if there is a simpler way(not adding keyboards) or a distribution which actually allows the use of FreeBSD keyboards. Another related problem is with the mouse. In the installation process it asks whether there is a USB mouse attached. It is however not functioning in the X configuration. I would really appreciate any help regarding the above two matters. You install it and it works. You don't get any fancy menus or stuff, but it shows you a list of partitions and you choose one to boot. I wouldn't put it on my Mom's computer, because it won't tell you which partition is the boot partition. But configuring it takes zero effort. Alternately, LILO does a fine job of booting FreeBSD. So does GRUB, but I wouldn't wish having to configure GRUB on my worst enemy. I have several problems with this greatful OS : I have got a terrible problem : I can not compile the GENERIC kernelof FreeBSD 4.4. I followed the hand book procedure from A to Z to try to recompile the GENERIC kernel (before customizing it), but the compilation stop during the make, after 2 minutes of compiling, exiting with the code -1. It seems that I have enough space left to compile (15% of a 600Mo partition = 90Mo), enough memory too (256Mo). What could be my mistake ? By the way, why can I not have a slice of more 640Mo for /usr when I have a 1200Mo HD for the installation ? I thought that it would be fun to play around with and give me a chance to learn more about this OS and computers in general. I want to install from the CDs so I downloaded the "kern.flp" and "mfsroot.flp" boot disks which seemed to work and send me to the UserConfig screen. I have a Matsushita/Panasonic CR 563 CD-ROM drive that is connected to a sound card. The CD-ROM lights up when I first boot up the machine. After setting port to: -1 in UserConfig for this device it still came up undetected. I have spent a couple of days mucking around with 4.4-release but the matcdc0 driver never showed up at all in UserConfig. So, I tried 3.5.1 and, at least, the device showed up in the list of potential drivers to choose from. Let me know if I should explain that a little more clearly. A gentle nudge to get me moving in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Now here's my other question. While logged in as root, I was trying to add IPFW support to my kernel. I copied GENERIC to FIREWALL and opened it and added options BRIDGE options IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT (I know this isn't good but I can add deny's after we get the machine up and running.) to the kernel, and I replaced all the instances of GENERIC with FIREWALL. I then did config FIREWALL and it came out with no errors. I then > changed to the compile directory and did a "make depend all install" > command and it gave me this error- Try building GENERIC. If that fails, get rid of /usr/src, reinstall it from the CD, and try it again. If either of that works, you somehow fooled config(8), but the kernel config file you used is broken. Oh, and you should be really using the "new way of building the kernel". It's much easier: > cd /usr/src > make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL > make installkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL > reboot -- FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE 8:41PM up 34 mins, 3 users, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jan 16 12:31:17 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from odin.acuson.com (ac30229.acuson.com [157.226.121.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D80C537B421 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2002 12:31:01 -0800 (PST) Received: from mvaexch02.acuson.com ([157.226.230.209]) by odin.acuson.com (Netscape Messaging Server 3.54) with ESMTP id AAA7086 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2002 12:30:58 -0800 Received: by mvaexch02.acuson.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Wed, 16 Jan 2002 12:25:23 -0800 Received: from there (dhcp-46-189.acuson.com [157.226.46.189]) by mvaexch01.acuson.com with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2653.13) id CJVDCN8N; Wed, 16 Jan 2002 12:22:23 -0800 From: Johnson David To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Organization: Acuson Subject: FreeBSD Boot Disk? Can one create a boot disk to boot into FreeBSD? I'm not talking about the install disk, but an actual boot disk to boot into an existing installation. I've installed FreeBSD at work on a second harddrive, with W2K on the first. To avoid totally alienating IT, I don't want to install boot easy, and my attempt to put FreeBSD on the NT boot loader were near disastrous. A simple boot disk will meet my needs, but I don't know how to make one. I don't want technical answers, just a pointer to the right documentation or port, or even if it can or cannot be done. Thanks, David p.s. I have permission to install FreeBSD behind IT's back. This isn't IT's computer, but they will be the ones to maintain the NT installation. It's a complicated story, so don't ask. p.p.s. I know about grub, and am currently using the grub "shell" to boot FreeBSD. But I would rather have a native solution. p.p.s. Thanks again. So I didn't make the world nor CVsup. Should I delete all the objects in /usr/obj ? And I am appologize for being a burden to this mailing list, but I am more a UNIX user (and now a BSD user) than a real hacker in system configuration. However, as my first step in every POSIX OS, I'd like recompile the kernel as I used to do with LIN.. (well, I will not say the name on this channel). If you think that I ask to much question to the newbies mailing list, let me know it ! I will try soon the command make buildkernel=.... and let you know the result ! Ciao olive Quoting "A. How could I go about fixing this ? Ok, first answer, look at the FAQ --> http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/x.html#XFREE86-ROOT Second one --> There are 3 ways 1. The best --> install Xwrapper from the ports 2. Install kdm, gdm, xdm depends on what kind of X you are using (graphical login, no more "startx") 2. Set setuid bit to Xfree86 (bad, bad boy) hth Axel To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jan 16 23:34:35 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from topaz.mdcc.cx (topaz.mdcc.cx [212.204.230.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04A1E37B402; Wed, 16 Jan 2002 23:34:26 -0800 (PST) Received: from k7.mavetju.org (topaz.mdcc.cx [212.204.230.141]) by topaz.mdcc.cx (Postfix) with ESMTP id C3B6F2B69A; Thu, 17 Jan 2002 08:34:21 +0100 (CET) Received: by k7.mavetju.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id EDA761D1; Thu, 17 Jan 2002 18:33:53 +1100 (EST) Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 18:33:53 +1100 From: Edwin Groothuis To: mikenoc@mindspring.com Cc: questions@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, FreeBSD-Newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: x windows fatal server error when not root. Actually I'm booting FreeBSD from a second had drive with win2k on the first right now. I just haven't wanted to install a bootmanager. Make a fixit.flp from the image (just as you make kern.flp and mfsroot.flp. Reboot the computer with fixit.flp in the A drive; this is not a floppy that boots a kernel, but it asks where you want to boot from with: boot: (it gives a default) type 1:ad(0,a)/boot/loader at the prompt. To make it "permanent", once it boots (vary the parameters appropriately until it works), put a file with the name kernel.conf on the floppy with the text in it: boot: 1:ad(0,a)/boot/loader and it should work. ad of course is for IDE; replace with da for a scsi disk. The first number is the drive number as known to the BIOS. The second number is the partition. The floppy will not be "mounted" by this operation and you can just remove it so you can use the floppy drive, and so when you reboot it will boot into win2k. Annelise P.S. the only evidence of FreeBSD will be in the Control Panel under Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, where it will show up as a "healthy" partition (Active) but without a letter. This approach is also good for a computer used by two people, with an owner who doesn't want any risk of a boot manager messing stuff up. I wrote this up in the book, which is now in a second edition; if you have the first edition, incidentally, you don't need the second-- just a few additions and corrections and a 4.4-CD-ROM instead of a 4.3. The fixit.flp is usually used as the third in the series of kern.flp, msfroot.flp, then fixit.flp to get a running kernel and some tools from floppies rather than the hard drive so you can repair a hard drive; with kernel.conf on the fixit.flp, it boots of course from the hard drive. Other resources? You've probably already found the FreeBSD mailing lists, which are an excellent resource. You should check in your area to see if there are other Unix User Groups in your area. I'd bet there is at least a Linux group, and chances are people would be willing to help you get started if you were to meet with them. Also, I believe the www.freebsddiary.org will not only help you get started, but it also based in or near Ottawa. Might try contacting them. brian -- Got work? http://www.planetshwoop.com/resume/ This is how I think: http://www.planetshwoop.com/blog/ Brian Sobolak sobolak@mindspring.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Thu Jan 17 15:27:11 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from smtp.harbornet.com (smtp.harbornet.com [199.2.132.49]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2B55C37B416 for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2002 15:27:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from upyours (c231969b.click-network.com [131.191.33.68]) by smtp.harbornet.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id PAA14283 for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2002 15:34:09 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <000a01c19fae$5cd9fb80$0301a8c0@clicknetwork.com> From: "Clark Mankin" To: Subject: Oy Vay Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 15:26:16 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0007_01C19F6B.4E6A7040" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4522.1200 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0007_01C19F6B.4E6A7040 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Network won't communicate. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. JUST LOST MONEY!

IT'S THAT SIMPLE!

The most important advertising dollar
spent should be for search engine
TRAFFIC!

1. Approximately 95% of all Internet
users start with a search engine query.

2. Anyone who comes to your site from a
major search
engine is 100 times more likely to
become a customer
because they were specifically looking
for your product,
goods or services.

3. Search engine traffic gives you
substantially more
for your advertising dollar than banners
or anything else.
Moreover, having a Banner Ad on a web
site doesn't mean your Ad
was seen or even targeted to your
market.

Can't Get Your Companies Web Site
Indexed by the Search Engines?

Unfortunately, this is all too common of
