There is a very good howto on cable/dsl connections at http://www.freebsddiary.org/freebsd-cable.php this one focusses on cable, but the part about DNS and firewalling is also useful for your dsl connection. Check the rest of the freebsddiary database, it's full of useful stuff! On my first set of questions I received = some=20 valuable input. Thanks!

So here is the second = set...

After reading many docs, I think this = is the=20 situation if I want to use X:

1. No X on the server, just files,=20 databases
   X on another FreeBSD box, = possibly=20 dual-boot with a Windows version

2. X on the server, plus files,=20 databases
A Windows PC with a client = program=20 (Hummingbird Exceed?) to run X in a
window while having access = to other=20 Windows programs.

Is this correct? Are there other=20 possibilities?

Remark: Another way is to develop = Windows=20 programs accessing files and
database on the server. I know how to = do that but I=20 don't want to!

I think you're going to get the same problems with an external USB burner (I don't know since I've never tried). Most cd burning software expects a scsi drive. The burncd software that comes with FreeBSD will work fine on IDE drives, but all the nice frontends and guis for burning want to use cdrecord which is scsi only. > I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a scsi off the net or just wait > and eventually freebsd will work with my existing equipment? It depends upon how urgent your need is. scsi emulation for IDE drives should be in 5.0 but that's still half a year away at least. burncd is fine for burning ISO images, but it doesn't have the feature set of cdrecord. I keep a Linux partition around for software development (compatibility testing), and use that for all my burning needs. X uses the terms "server" and "client" differently than most people are used to, and it can get confusing. The X server runs on the machine that has the display. The X client is the software that you are running. So, every machine that you wish to view X applications on needs to have an X server. The X applications themselves can reside on any computer. You don't even need more than just the X server on your "client" machines. Here's how X is setup at my work: Bull, Balderdash: My desktop workstations. Bull is a Solaris machine with Openwindows (a X11R5 variant) and Balderdash has FreeBSD with XFree86. To use the Framemaker application from Balderdash, I have to remotely log into to Bull (since framemaker is a Solaris application). Then I run Framemaker on Bull, and I get to use Framemaker for Solaris on FreeBSD. The actual application is running on Bull, but everything is being displayed on Balderdash. Of course, I have to let Bull know what X display to use. In this situation, Bull is a server, but it is running the X client. Balderdash is a client, but it is running the X server. I don't have a SoundBlaster Live!, but an ESS Allegro/2E. From what I can read the hardware is supported, but something isn't working quite right. I agree that it seems like a missing step in the Handbook. Assuming that you did the same thing as me, you: 1. Added 'device pcm' to kernel and compiled 2. makedev for the sound 3. Act confused when nothing works I understand that this is an issue for the **questions list** to answer, so I don't expect anyone on the list to answer, but I think that if this is an issue with the handbook, I think it's important for newbies to have a reliable source with directions on how to set up sound. Or, are there bigger items that myself or other newbies are totally missing with this issue? I can't use any OS that I can't play my music on! :-) By the way, while I'm here, I should share my FreeBSD experience. I had a nice time installing 4.4-REL and 4.5-REL and it was pleasantly simple, considering I have only had Windows and MacOS experience prior to using FreeBSD. However, I do feel a bit disoriented when using FreeBSD mainly because of the fundamental ideas of UNIX (file system structure, the X windowing system, compiling source code, multi-user/networking, etc.). It will only be a matter of time for me... If there is anything that I could contribute in terms of ideas, it would be that the install program optionally have a "newbie mode" - a more tutorial-like interface rather than the currently objective sysinstall. Nonetheless it is a nice tool. Some of my friends who use linux thought that it was "neat". Also, some more desktop-oriented distrobution sets couldn't hurt along with the current ones (like User, Developer, X-User, etc.). It would be neat to see more pre-fab ones like "Home Office" with X, a web browser, a word processor, and a spreadsheet with menus and launchers all set up. Another example could be "Multimedia" with X, some editing tools, some P2P applications, and a tutorial (forbid I use the word 'wizard' hehe) on how to had sound support to the kernel. I don't really think that this would take away from the "hard-core" nature of FreeBSD since all of the traditional options would still be there. This would enable many more users to try FreeBSD (it's hard enough to convince lots of people to try new things; now try telling them that after they install FreeBSD that they need to spend a lot of time configuring and installing other stuff; lots of people are surprisingly accepting of default settings, like using IE in Windows). Well, those are my thoughts. Unfortunately during the installation phase I did not pay enough attention to the kernel configuration and that has left me with a driver/IRQ conflict between my NE2000(Realtek 8029) ISA NIC driver and the COM2 serial port driver. The result of this is that I am unable to use the NIC. I have entered boot -c at the prompt and entered the visual mode to configure the kernel. I am able to disable the driver for the COM2 port, which I don't use, setup the correct IRQ etc for the NIC save and exit. This gives me access to the NIC and I can configure the ed0 device fine. The problem is on reboot the kernel reverts to the first configuration - resulting in no networking. No doubt there is a way to fix this (I thought the save & exit option would sort this out but it doesn't) but I'm not sure how to do this. Do I need to - a) reinstall - least favoured option b) recompile the kernel - certainly doable, but not favoured or c) is there a config file/command that will enable my hardware/kernel driver settings to be kept over a reboot. In the archives I have come across a similar problem - alas the thread seemed to end before an answer came forward. If anyone can be of assistance in this matter it would be much appreciated. As I recall, it was due to sendmail trying to qualify an unqualifiable host name. Your host needs a FQDN (fully qualified domain name). Either give your host a full name, or disable sendmail. The command "hostname" will tell you the full host name of your machine. If it's just a simple one word name like "mymachine", then sendmail will grumble. You need something on the order of "mymachine.my.domain". If you're on a network, your sysadmin will tell you your full host name. If you're the sysadmin, start boning up on hostname by reading the hostname manpage in section 7 (type "man 7 hostname"). I had a horrible time trying to get the NT bootloader to load FreeBSD. I think the core of the problem is that the FreeBSD bootloader is not a normal bootloader (I could be wrong). My MBR kept messing up along with other annoying oddities. Reading the FAQ closely, I discovered that you have to do something different if FreeBSD is not on the first harddrive, but it didn't say what to do in that situation. I finally gave up and used Grub. The instant-workstation port is a "meta" port. That means it doesn't install anything for itself, but only lists dependencies. When you try to deinstall the port, there's nothing to deinstall. But the dependencies will still be there. If you look at the Makefile in instant-workstation, you'll see a list of runtime dependencies. These are what get installed when you install this meta-port. If you need to deinstall these, then you will need to do them by hand (one drawback to meta-ports). I don't know why acroread didn't get installed. You may try installing it all by itself and see what error messages you get (the actual port name is acroread4). But I suspect that ghostscript failed because of the checksum mismatch. The ghostscript-gnu port has been updated on a very frequent basis recently, and I suspect that you happen to have an out-of-sync port. The Handbook lists a variety of ways to update your ports collection. Are there some permissions > I need to provide? > Chances are, your fstab is not set to automatically mount the CD at startup. Check that fstab file again, and if there is an entry called "noauto" by the line for the CD, then that means "don't mount automatically". Why is the line there at all if it doesn't mount, you ask? Because it makes it very easy to mount manually, when and if you want to mount it. So now you can just type "mount /cdrom" as superuser, and voila! If the line wasn't in fstab, you'd have to provide more device and filesystem info on the command line, which is always a pain. If you do want it to mount automatically, remove the "noauto" bit from the fstab file. Note that this will probably cause errors to happen if you don't actually have a CD in the drive at startup. You may have noticed that the sysinstall program seems to be able to read from the cd without the CD being mounted. I think sysinstall does an automatic mount/unmount when it starts and exits, but I'm not positive. Good luck. The instant-workstation port is a "meta" port. That means it doesn't inst= all anything for itself, but only lists dependencies. When you try to deinsta= ll the port, there's nothing to deinstall. Yup, i like it too. I came from Mandrake and then from LinuxFromScratch (see www.linuxfromscratch.org, vey useful to build your own distro once :P But with FBSD i noticed i had to learn a lot still. But i'm having a good time doing it :) > Okay, question: I would like to be able to access the CD-ROM and my > CD-Writer as a normal user. How can I do that? > I just want to tell you that these kind of questions should actually go to the freebsd-questions list. Enfin here's my answer: 1. open the file sysctl.conf in /etc and add the line vfs.usermount=1 next time the machine boots this will make sure users may mount. to have immediate effect: sysctl vfs.usermount=1 2. make the devices user accessable. for me the cdrom and cdrw where /dev/acd0c and /dev/acd1c so a chmod 777 on those devices made sure anyone can use them (i'm not happy with it, because now everyone can do a lot with them, i might make a group where certain users are in that can access the devices) 3. create a mount-point in the user home dir. My standard user has a couple of mountpoints in $HOME/mnt/ to provide access to cdrom/cdrw/zip/floppy users should now be able to mount devices > Another question, I would like to be able to burn with my writer, and I > have to enable the SCSI-emulation, where will I find that? if you have an atapi burner you should just be able to use burncd. I haven't tried myself, but i remember this issue on freebsd-questions recently. Do a search on the list archive, it'll pop-up ah, and if you wonder how to do something, also make sure to check www.freebsddiary.org, the net's best collection on how to do things with FBSD :) it helped me more than once already! regards Chris Delnooz To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Fri Feb 22 9:10:20 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from hotmail.com (f71.law4.hotmail.com [216.33.149.71]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0030337B404 for ; Fri, 22 Feb 2002 09:10:12 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Fri, 22 Feb 2002 09:10:12 -0800 Received: from 64.83.6.88 by lw4fd.law4.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Fri, 22 Feb 2002 17:10:12 GMT X-Originating-IP: [64.83.6.88] From: "Scott Spencer" To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: detecting ext. modem Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 12:10:12 -0500 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 22 Feb 2002 17:10:12.0970 (UTC) FILETIME=[CA4634A0:01C1BBC3] Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I would like to thank the people who responded to my first e-mail, it has allowed me to narrow my problem. (that's why the server 'restarts' when you quit KDE or Gnome. it's not any magic on KDE or Gnome's part, they are simply local programs and when you 'logout', they just save the current session and exit.) so, the bare minimum that you need in your ~/.xsession file is a windowmanager so that you have a running process to let X know you're still using it. it may seem a little confusing because when you start KDE or Gnome or 'X' from the root command prompt by typing in 'startx', what you are doing is running a start-up script (in fact, crack it open and take a look, it's an interesting read) that looks for your custom initializations and cleverly starts X by using 'xinit'. however, it \doesn't\ look at your ~/.xsession file, it instead looks at your ~/.xinitrc file. most desktop environments (KDE/Gnome/Blah) set this file up for you and, if i understand correctly, it's format is identical to your .xsession file that xdm calls on startup. take a look and see if you have a .xinitrc file and see what's inside. if it looks safe, just cp it to .xsession and try logging in using xdm. if you still have problems, let me know. sumanth p. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. Just point ppp to the right com port (set device to cuaa1) in your ppp.conf file. That's why a lot of people advocate the usage of external modems over internal ones. Just know that... Do note that in case anyone was curious, this applies to external ISDN "modems" as well. Just point ppp at the right serial port and go. I notice that a pkg_ has a .tgz extention not .tar.gz. Is the .tar.gz file a package? How can I avoid the a.out---elf issue in the future? 2nd. Apache install ... I tried to install 2.0? and 1.3 from the ports tree. They did not work. I kept getting error on line 205 LOADMODULE problem. Sorry I can't be more specific. So then I deinstall everything Apache and try again. This time I use the /stand/sysinstall method. Apache fires up just fine now. How configureable is this install of Apache? What went wrong in the ports intall? I have soooooo many questions. And I think that I am not sure what the right questions to ask are. Thanks for your time. Paul... I for one, always use ports (compile from source) as I find the process less clunky, and a tad more predictable that packages. > > 2nd. Apache install ... The apache logfiles live in /var/log/, and provide a wealth of information as to what's happening with your server. As for configurability, with the packaged one, you can't set any options that need to be set at compile-time, but most if not all options that can be set from the config-file or at runtime can be set AFAIK. > I have soooooo many questions.
