FreeBSD? 2.X, really such an old version? Your .xinitrc file is unconventional--/usr/X11Ry/bin/X should be linked to your XF86_SVGA server so that should be an unnecessary command...and /bin/tsch does not exist in 2.X. I REALLy want to find an alternative. I'm getting ready to put up FBSD on my home desktop and have a few questions. I've been reading up on this stuff, FreeBSD Unleashed, the FreeBSD handbook (I actually bought the printed version!), as well as Annelise Anderson's book. I've also printed out the FAQ as well as a number of other Web based info. I've downloaded the 4 CD ISO's and burned them to disk. So, now the questions. 1. It seems like FBSD 4.5 supports USB out of the box, that I don't have to recompile the kernal or anything. Is this correct? 2. Wacom Tablet support. I'm gathering that there is no native Wacom Tablet driver, mostly for X. I've found that there is an OpenBSD driver and this it should work for X and FBSD. Is anyone out there using that driver?? Comments? 3. CVSup. I want to install the 4.5 release version on my desktop and then update to all the latest release patches and updates. I also then want to update all the ports and packages that come on the CD's. Is the a key or tag that just updates ALL the code I've installed on my disk?? It seems that the "catagories" are specific to groups of ports. As far as the kernal or core OS, can I just use the RELENG_4_5_0_RELEASE tag?? 4. Soundblaster Live support. In section 14.2.1 of the Handbook, it says that the SB Live is not supported under FBSD 4.0 without a patch. I am readning that as meaning that it IS support in the core OS with versions later that 4.0. Does this mean that 4.5 (and 4.6 support it out of the box? 5. Release 4.5 vs. 4.6 and X3 vs. X4. I guess 4.6 is going to be out soon. Will it actually install X4? If so, would it be recommended to wait the couple of weeks to get that vs. installing 4.5?? Thx for the assistance. It has a few pointers for FreeBSD. ksysguardd must be owned by group kmem, and must be setgid. Second, you must either have ssh working properly, or start ksysguardd manually before you start ksysguard using a daemon connection. I found that using ssh is the easiest. Read the FreeBSD handbook on OpenSSH, turn on sshd in sysinstall, and generate your keys. To see if it works, type: ssh localhost ksysguardd and you should see the ksysguardd prompt (type quit to quit). Then start up ksysguard. David p.s. As far | as the kernal or core OS, can I just use the RELENG_4_5_0_RELEASE tag?? I am going to try to answer the question I think you're asking. You can use CVSup to update the source code on your system. In order to update the ports collection you would want to CVSup the ports collection. This will make it possible for you to install the latest and greatest, but will not update the programs you already have installed. To do that you will want to install portupgrade (which is conveniently available in the ports collection) and run it _after_ CVSup-ing the ports collection. Regarding the FBSD source itself, if you use the tag RELENG_4_5_0_RELEASE you will get precisely the code on your 4.5 CDs. As that wouldn't help much, you are more likely to want RELENG_4_5 (contains security patches etc. for 4.5 release) or RELENG_4 (-STABLE). | | 4. Soundblaster Live support. As you've already got the 4.5 CDs and you seem to understand the idea of CVSup, I'd say install 4.5 and see what you think. You can always update later. (personally, I have one of the 4.3 CDs put out by WindRiver that I use for most of my initial installations and then update from there) It appears that XFree86 4.2 will be the default installation with 4.6 (I guess I should look into upgrading that, huh). I haven't tried running Xfree84 4.x since 4.0.x, so I can't advise there. This information might make it worth your while to wait on FBSD 4.6. On the other hand, you might want to keep in mind that your first installation is usually poorly done, install 4.5 now and see what you think on the assumption that you will either have to re-install or upgrade anyway. http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.6R/qa.html for the change in XFree86 version. Good luck. I hope this helps. But be warned that USB support doesn't mean that every USB device is supported. If they're not a generic device like mice or keyboards, they'll still need their own driver. I don't have a Wacom tablet, but XFree86-4 does build a wacom driver by default. I don't know what else is needed under FreeBSD for it to work. If there is an OpenBSD driver, then there should also be a FreeBSD driver. > 3. CVSup. But note that there is a patch. That's good news. It could be that it's in current- but that they haven't backported it to stable- yet. > 5. Release 4.5 vs. 4.6 and X3 vs. X4. The preliminary release notes for 4.6 say that XFree86-4 will be the default. Yay! But don't wait. Install 4.5 and play around, discover, and learn. Then when 4.6 comes out, you'll be that much further along. David p.s. You used the phrase "out of the box" quite a lot. Don't be afraid to rebuild the OS and use the ports. It's not really that hard if you read the Handbook first. And the benefits are enormous. Of course, you don't want to do this your first time. But eventually you will want to. On my 1.4Ghz machine, I can sup down the latest release and rebuild the base from scratch quicker than I can install WinME and my required drivers. If you do that then you'll also find it easier to upgrade to X4.2 (which I'm pretty sure is in the ports collection already. Install 4.5, CVSUP your ports and then install X4.2) Just what I find easier. >On the other hand, you might >want to keep in mind that your first installation is usually poorly done, >install 4.5 now and see what you think on the assumption that you will either >have to re-install or upgrade anyway. Hello Jeff, The installation cdroms include a version of the FreeBSD kernel called GENERIC. This includes a lot of drivers already. It does indeed have USB support compiled into the kernel. You can always use the GENERIC kernel if it seems to meet your needs and requirements. After you have become acquainted with the way FreeBSD works and feel comfortable about it, you might want to build a kernel of your own, which includes all the drivers you want and only those. This is both a useful exercise in getting to know the way everything can be rebuilt from the sources in FreeBSD, and an optimization that you'll probably like (since a smaller kernel that includes only those things you are currently using takes up less memory in your system, and frees a few resources for other things). > 3. CVSup. I want to install the 4.5 release version on my desktop > and then update to all the latest release patches and updates. The FreeBSD Handbook has a section that explains how you can upgrade to the STABLE version of FreeBSD at any given time. Find it at http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en/books/handbook/current-stable.html#STABLE > I also then want to update all the ports and packages that come on > the CD's. You don't need to upgrade them all. Packages that are released on the CDROMs are snapshots of the ports directory near the date of the release of that particular version of FreeBSD. You can use the ports infrastructure, installed in /usr/ports during the setup of the machine, to grab and build any program's latest version. > As far as the kernal or core OS, can I just use the > RELENG_4_5_0_RELEASE tag?? You'll probably like RELENG_4_5 better since it includes all the security fixes that have been found since 4.5-RELEASE was out. It is a convenient way to upgrade to the latest and greatest, as far as 4.5-RELEASE is concerned. Look at http://www.FreeBSD.org/security too, for more information on what RELENG_4_5 is all about. Another option is to use the RELENG_4 tag that will bring you smoothly the latest 4.x version any day. This is explained in the #STABLE section of the Handbook linked above. > 5. Release 4.5 vs. 4.6 and X3 vs. X4. I guess 4.6 is going to be > out soon. Will it actually install X4? If so, would it be > recommended to wait the couple of weeks to get that vs. installing > 4.5?? My advice would be to install 4.5 anyway. My first 4-5 installations of FreeBSD were scratched and reinstalled shortly after I was finished. Different partition layouts, differences in the sets of packages installed, or other minor stuff that you need to try and see for yourself are probably worth the trouble of ``testing'' 4.5-RELEASE before you get 4.6-RELEASE and install it for every day use. This doesn't mean that you absolutely `have to' install FreeBSD a dozen times. It just means that as you learn more about the operating system you'll probably want to reinstall later to change something that you don't like about the initial setup. Why miss the chance to test it all now, with 4.5-RELEASE and upgrade to 4.6-RELEASE later when it becomes available? All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message.
