Can anyone please tell me how to do this ? It's ls -G, not ls -g The foreground and background and controlled by vidcontrol (on the console). Other kinds of files are shown in accordance with the settings of the environmental variable LSCOLORS. So it is not just "one number." I have a file called milcol that looks like this: vidcontrol blue brown LSCOLORS=0x7x6x5x1x46x201060203 and one called pastel that looks like this: vidcontrol white black LSCOLORS=2x5x0x4x6x464301060203 export LSCOLORS These could be shell scripts but I just use the built-in bash source command. The / directory is a good one to check (ls -G /) because it has files of different kinds. To return to sanity: vidcontrol white black LSCOLORS= With remote access, you need something other than vt100 as a terminal emulator, as vt100 is not color-capable. xterm-color will work. If you wanted an authority, why didn't you go straight to the source? 4.6 ISOs are probably being created as we speak. Considering that there's an ISO for 4.6-RC2, I strongly suspect that there will be some for 4.6-RELEASE. This is freebsd-newbies. By definition we don't know what we're talking about... Without any indication of your humourous intent, it's outright inappropriate. From some articles I found on the internet, I found a few instructions. I created a "xinitrc" file in the home directory of my non-root user account. I tried a "gnome-session" line in this file as well as a "exec /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session" line and neither one seemed to kick off Gnome after a "startx". Any suggestions? Thanks. There are a few ways to start gnome. A nice way is to use gdm (or xdm*), which presents you with a "windows" style login screen. You need to add this line to /etc/ttys ttyvb "/usr/X11R6/bin/gdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure then do `kill -1 1`, which will start up gdm on ttyvb (you can choose a different tty, I put mine on F12). If you then do ctrl-alt-F12, you'll see a graphical login screen. Before you login you need to setup your session init script. In your home directory create a file .xsession that looks like this -------- #!/bin/sh gnome-session --------- If you now try and login using gdm, it should start your gnome session. If things don't work then look at the file ~/.xsession-errors, it should provide some clues. *gdm has had some security issues, if the box is connected to a network then you might be better off using xdm, which does the same job but isn't as exciting :-) --=20 Paul Richards | FreeBSD DVD distributions FreeBSD Services Ltd | =20 http://www.freebsd-services.com | Pre-order your FreeBSD 4.6 DVD now!. --=-fNQVhkIE7dEhBubspVir Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (FreeBSD) iQEVAwUAPQcW1H/5PEK9QuA3AQJ0YQgAtUGZDhs0wPW11otjQs9IKI54ziY3DsAG dRcg0kyEqVTGoucOmj25Dfd7XSbkHxBk8qHSOGX5+0n6gBn8gAjHkMjFaX0ucvAn Ecqz9FfbwLo8iUXLvvsa1z1LpYn0xhcgDYxbU09+tXWUe3Da8WUr9NZqfEAi1Cho WqbpRO/U4sosxB3W68tExhOoZJ2cH9n4vjAQuAHxIFt2GqyUFSC9ttEyE2Kpyqgy tseU+33SABYzLq3P3qpIElASGcVFbpQAcy/sVMCtyanquB4L1Mbb32IlVWNDM8ho cl+smhUmywwlqjFHRsob6CCOdvFySMsHrVxceR9M1XGDHbrIRn4MaA== =QEwL -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-fNQVhkIE7dEhBubspVir-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jun 12 6:24:55 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from lycos.com (61-222-158-100.HINET-IP.hinet.net [61.222.158.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id EBFB237B409; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 06:24:26 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rly-yk04.aolmd.com ([185.85.20.205]) by rly-xl04.mx.aolmd.com with smtp; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 00:24:11 -0400 Received: from [53.198.216.198] by q4.quickslow.com with asmtp; 11 Jun 2002 20:22:50 +0300 Received: from [82.161.197.120] by rly-yk05.pesdets.com with NNFMP; Tue, 11 Jun 2002 23:21:29 -0400 Received: from 22.192.187.209 ([22.192.187.209]) by rly-yk05.pesdets.com with NNFMP; Tue, 11 Jun 2002 19:20:08 +0300 Received: from rly-yk04.aolmd.com ([192.64.224.103]) by smtp4.cyberecschange.com with SMTP; Tue, 11 Jun 2002 22:18:47 +0300 Reply-To: Message-ID: <036b66b56a8d$8327b5b8$5ac40ce1@sthbbg> From: To: Home@FreeBSD.ORG, Owner@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: ** Approved. ** Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 22:01:01 +0300 MiME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_00E5_84A70E3A.C4515B83" X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 Importance: Normal Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org ------=_NextPart_000_00E5_84A70E3A.C4515B83 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 PGh0bWw+DQo8Ym9keT4NCjxmb250IGNvbG9yPSJmZmZmZmYiPkZyaWVuZDwv Zm9udD4NCjxwPllvdXIgaG9tZSByZWZpbmFuY2UgbG9hbiBpcyBhcHByb3Zl ZCE8YnI+PC9wPjxicj4NCjxwPlRvIGdldCB5b3VyIGFwcHJvdmVkIGFtb3Vu dCA8YSBocmVmPSJodHRwOi8vNjYuMjMxLjEzMy4yMDEvYXBwcm92YWwvIj5n bw0KaGVyZTwvYT4uPC9wPg0KPGJyPjxicj48YnI+PGJyPjxicj48YnI+PGJy Pjxicj48YnI+PGJyPjxicj48YnI+PGJyPjxicj48YnI+PGJyPjxicj48YnI+ PGJyPg0KPHA+VG8gYmUgZXhjbHVkZWQgZnJvbSBmdXJ0aGVyIG5vdGljZXMg PGZvbnQgc2l6ZT0iMyI+PGENCmhyZWY9Im1haWx0bzpnYW5kYWxmMkBidGFt YWlsLm5ldC5jbj9zdWJqZWN0PXBsZWFzZSB1bnN1YnNjcmliZSI+Z28gaGVy ZTwvYT48L2ZvbnQ+PHNtYWxsPg0KLjwvc21hbGw+PC9wPg0KPGZvbnQgY29s b3I9ImZmZmZmZiI+RnJpZW5kPC9mb250Pg0KPC9ib2R5Pg0KPGZvbnQgY29s b3I9ImZmZmZmZiI+DQo8L2h0bWw+DQowNTAxbW9LcDQtNjQ2b2hSejQ4NDNv dm9uMy0wMDRKTEVrMzUzMXFwcGI2LTU1OUZzQ2U0OTYzU1lrbTQtNzExbVV4 dDQzMzJWdnBkMS02NTJsNzY= To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jun 12 9:14:53 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx.unesp.br (armstrong.unesp.br [200.145.1.22]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 932E437B40B for ; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 09:14:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from Spamassassin Check (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mx.unesp.br (Postfix) with ESMTP id 901125C2F1 for ; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 13:14:43 -0300 (BRT) Received: from civitate.ai.unesp.br (civitate.ai.unesp.br [200.145.2.12]) by mx.unesp.br (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF6365C2F1 for ; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 13:14:38 -0300 (BRT) Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 13:10:49 -0300 (BRT) From: Eduardo Damato X-X-Sender: To: Subject: X problems Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8BIT X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.0 required=8.0 tests= version=2.11 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi all, I am an experienced linux administrator, but am quite unhappy with some linux kernel problems and am trying to take up FreeBSD as my new system. I am now having troubles with starting the X server... Everytime i try to start it, it yields this nasty answer: Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: KDENABIO failed (Operation not permitted) I guess it must have something to do with KDE....but in fact i am using windowmaker as my default desktop. Moreover I cant find which file is calling this xf86openconsole, and there is no log output at all. Unfortunately the desktop setup utility doesnt seem to turn off this kdenabio, and since i cant find lsof anywhere (not even under ports) i cant track which files are trying to call this xf86openconsole. Can anyone help me out? All suggestions are very welcome, One more thing. Does anyone have nice web links made for those who are switching from linux to freebsd?? Are there any good docs around to make this switching easier? Please copy me as I am not always subscribed... "Deprecated Linuxism" isn't in the Official FreeBSD Dictionary of Slang, so I'll have to go by memory :-) A "linuxism" is a way of doing things that only makes sense on Linux. Many people who have used Linux but never used another Unix or unix-like system believe that the Linux way of doing things is the right way. One project in particular (which I won't name) had on their front webpage that it wouldn't work under FreeBSD and that it was FreeBSD's fault for not using Linux style threads. One of the more common linuxisms is the organization of the proc filesystem. A "deprecated linuxism" is a linuxism that is outdated, archaic, wrong, or insecure, but Linux people don't know any better because their distros keep shipping with it. Remember, the average Linux person has no clue that anything outside of their distros even exist. One example of a deprecated linuxism is RPM. The original post about ISO images being a deprecated linuxism was a joke. It was like saying "what do you want an ISO image for, are you some Linux luser who hasn't got with the program yet?" Whereupon the Linux user goes off pondering whether or not he's a neanderthal for even asking the question. Of course, ISO images are not deprecated, are not linuxisms, and most certainly not deprecated linuxisms. Of course I don't use them, I've found something much better. It's called supping the source and building 4.6-RELEASE from scratch... --- David p.s. "Official FreeBSD Dictionary of Slang" does not exist. This is a joke. Don't take it seriously... Ah... well, the least they'll provide is disc 1, which is all you need to get FreeBSD installed. Disc 2 doesn't really contain anything too useful for someone in your situation. Disc 3 and 4 contain binary packages for a large number (if not all) of the programs found in the ports tree. You're probably thinking to yourself, "Oh geez, not another miracle diet pill!"  Like you, I was skeptical at first, but my sister swore it helped her lose 23 pounds in just two weeks, so I told her I'd give it a shot.  I mean, there was nothing to lose except a lot of weight!  Let me tell you, it was the best decision I've ever made. Period.  Six months later, as I'm writing this message to you, I've gone from 355 pounds to 210 pounds, and I haven't changed my exercise routine or diet at all.  Yes, I still eat pizza, and lots of it! I was so happy with the results that I contacted the manufacturer and got permission to resell it - at a BIG discount.  I want to help other people lose weight like I did, because it does so much for your self-esteem, not to mention your health. I give you my personal pledge that Extreme Power Plus absolutely WILL WORK FOR YOU.  If it doesn't, you can return it any time for a full refund. Interested, visit http://2002marketing.com/affiliate3/index.htm    If you are frustrated with trying other products, not having any success, and just not getting the results you were promised, then I recommend the only product that worked for me - EXTREME POWER PLUS. You're probably asking yourself, "Ok, so how does this stuff actually work?" Extreme Power Plus contains Lipotropic fat burners and ephedra which is scientifically proven to increase metabolism and cause rapid weight loss. No "hocus pocus" in these pills - just RESULTS, RESULTS, RESULTS!! Here is the bottom line ... I can help you lose 10-15 pounds per week naturally, without exercising and without having to eat rice cakes all day.  Just try it for one month - there's nothing to lose, and everything to gain.  You will lose weight fast - GUARANTEED.  That is my pledge to you.  To order Extreme Power Plus on our secure server, just click on the link below: http://2002marketing.com/affiliate3/index.htm If you have difficulty accessing the website above, please try our mirror site by clicking on the link below: http://2002marketing.com/affiliate3/index.htm To see what some of our customers have said about this product, visit http://2002marketing.com/affiliate3/index.htm To see a list of ingredients and for more information on test studies and how it will help you lose weight, visit http://2002marketing.com/affiliate3/index.htm ************************************************************* If you do not wish to receive any more emails from me, please send an email to "affiliate2@btamail.net.cn" requesting to be removed. ************************************************************* To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jun 12 20:26:36 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mailhost.bcv2.ameritech.net (mailhost2-bcvloh.bcvloh.ameritech.net [66.73.20.44]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F1E337B414 for ; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 20:26:30 -0700 (PDT) Received: from servant02 ([67.38.245.15]) by mailhost.bcv2.ameritech.net (InterMail vM.4.01.02.17 201-229-119) with SMTP id <20020613032628.FYLY339.mailhost.bcv2.ameritech.net@servant02> for ; Wed, 12 Jun 2002 23:26:28 -0400 Message-ID: <000801c2128a$41b716e0$6401a8c0@servant02> From: "Justin Andrusk" To: Subject: Subscribe Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 23:27:32 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0005_01C21268.BA35EC30" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4910.0300 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0005_01C21268.BA35EC30 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Subscribe ------=_NextPart_000_0005_01C21268.BA35EC30 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Moving /usr is a big operation. Have you tried doing make clean in existing kernel compile directories and the ports tree? Do you have anything lingering under /usr/local from old software or project? Is there any third-party compile directories you can remove or clean? Do you have any ports installed that you don't use/need? Is your /home, /tmp, or /var symlinked into /usr? Are they full of stuff? Basically, have you done any general housekeeping? Anyway, to move /usr: Using sysinstall, add the slice, use the w key to write changes to disk, then add a partition to the slice using a mount point of something like /usr.new, or whatever, use the w key again to write the new label to disk. Sysinstall should automatically newfs and mount the new partition for you. It shouldn't be asking you to remap your slices. Edit /etc/fstab to add the new entry. Drop to single-user mode. You may need to reboot to do this. If you reboot, "fsck" then "mount -a" after you get the shell prompt. Type "mount" again to make sure everything is mounted properly. Transfer the entire contents of your /usr to the new partition. Don't use cp or mv, you *will* screw something up. The recommended method is a pair of tar's piped together like so: tar -cf - -C /usr . | tar xpf - -C /usr.new This operation can take a long time depending on how much data you have and how fast it can be copied. You can swap "xpf" for "xpvf" if you want to watch the process, but doing so will slow things down. After the copy is complete, walk through /usr.new and do a visual inspection to make sure everything looks ok. Don't edit /etc/fstab just yet. Umount /usr.new and /usr, and mount the new partion at /usr. You can't do this if you're using a shell in /usr/local/bin. Double check any symlinks (like /home, /sys, /compat) to make sure they all still work. Logout. The machine will now go through the multi-user startup. Watch for problems. If the machine has problems or won't start up, record the problem/error and reboot. Because you haven't editted fstab yet, the machine will restart using the old /usr. Fix whatever, reboot to single-user mode, repeat. After everything is running as it was, you can edit fstab. It's a good idea to keep the old /usr around for a while until you're ABSOLUTELY certain that everything is intact and working properly. A brief history of netiquette: Once upon a time people told jokes. All sorts of jokes. Irony, satire, puns, etc. It was easy to tell that someone was joking because they either laughed, smiled, inflected their voice, or winked at you. Then came the usenet, the internet and the world wide web. Suddenly it wasn't possible to easily determine if a communication was humorous or not. It was all too easy to play a harmless prank on an unsuspecting victim with no fear of retaliation. It was all too hard to determine if the wool was being pulled over your eyes. Coincident with the rise of the internet was the rise of the Cult of Political Correctness. People were suddenly becoming extremely offended by the most innocent of jokes. Thus was born netiquette. This was a set of unwritten rules for behavior on the web. "If we don't police ourselves", the collective citizenry of cyberspace said, "someone else will police us from the outside and make our lives miserable." Thus was born netiquette. Unfortunately, the presence of fake metatags and appropriate emoticons spoils most jokes. But given enough experience, and sufficient maturity, the average person will develop thick enough skin to weather even the most determined barbs of Bzdik and his fellow antagonists. Truly great jokes can last for years before people catch on. I am amazed that Richard Stallman has managed to keep a straight face for all of these years. Hi,

System: FreeBSD 4.5, XFree86 4.2.0_1, i810 card, agp support in kernel.

I just upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5, and while running XFree86 4.1 (the one =
on
CD), the initial startup messages can be seen, but after that, the =
display
goes totally blank. No crosshatch is displayed (no wm/desktop =
installed).
Even killing the server has no effect, the screen remains blank. I have =
to
reboot for getting display back. Note that the system is _not_ hung, but
still runs... just the display is blank. I compiled XFree86-4.2.0, and =
still
the same problem occurs. I was using XFree86-4.0.1_8 on 4.2, and it =
worked
fine, hence I assume that it is not a hardware problem.

ps. please reply to me personally, i'm not subscribed to the list.

Thanks.

At first I was assuming that you wanted to know how to mount a CD as a user. Then I noticed your domain name. I guess you either already know how to do that, or know how to find out. If not, ask your boss :-) My understanding is that you can't get the Solaris behavior. Solaris does something called volume management with regards to CDs and floppies. It's sort of like automounting but not quite. But you can get most of the same behavior using amd, the automounter. Now this is going to be very embarassing for you, but there's an article on this very topic at DaemonNews: :-) David To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Thu Jun 13 14:38:32 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from samwise.jobeus.net (samwise.jobeus.net [209.91.102.74]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9E27637B412 for ; Thu, 13 Jun 2002 14:38:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from root@localhost) by samwise.jobeus.net (8.12.3/8.12.3) id g5DLc7ui064745; Thu, 13 Jun 2002 15:38:07 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from freebsd@jobeus.net) Received: from localhost (freebsd@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by samwise.jobeus.net (8.12.3/8.12.3av) with ESMTP id g5DLc6a0064737; Thu, 13 Jun 2002 15:38:06 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from freebsd@jobeus.net) Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 15:38:06 -0600 (MDT) From: Scott Carmichael To: "Derrill \"Kisc\" Guilbert" Cc: Newbies Subject: Re: Stupid Question In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20020613153715.K64714-100000@samwise.jobeus.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Virus-Scanned: by AMaViS perl-11 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org /sbin/mount_cd9660 /dev/cd0a /mnt/cdrom Assuming that /dev/cd0a is your CDROM drive. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. Below are some snippets from the v4.2.0 release doc. "Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips by the "ati" driver, as is unaccelerated support for all of the others except the Mach8 and some early Mach32 chips." "Support (accelerated) for the MGA2064W (Millennium I), MGA1064SG (Mystique), MGA2164W (Millennium II) (PCI and AGP), G100, G200, G400, G450, and G550 is provided by the "mga" driver." "Support (accelerated) for the Riva 128, 128ZX, TNT, TNT2 (Ultra, Vanta, M64), GeForce (DDR, 256), Quadro, GeForce2 (GTS, Ultra, MX), GeForce3, and Quadro2 is provided by the "nv" driver." That covers pretty much all of the current common "high-end" cards. My roomate has an ATI Radeon 7200 32MB DDR working in v4.1.0 using AGP 4x mode under Linux. I myself have run an AGP Matrox G200 using v4.0.x under FreeBSD without problems. For me "good" means if it works with crappy Xsun in Solaris x86. All of the above do well. XFree86 4+ supports newer and more powerful Radeons and GeForces, but beware the absolutely latest and greates ones. G400 works with quite a few funny ones: Be, QNX, Darwin.. (nVidia is notorious for making driver developers' work hard). Your Pentium 199 is quite capable for most tasks excluding professional graphics/video work. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? A few months back I joined a program and then...promptly forgot about it. You may have done this yourself sometime...you intend to work the program but then get caught in your day-to-day activities and it's soon forgotten. The program was free to join so maybe I just didn't take it very seriously. Anyway, near the end of March I received a letter from my sponsor (Leslynne Perry) informing me that I had more than 2000 PAID members in my downline! As you can imagine, I was very skeptical. After all, how could I have more than 2000 paid members under me in a program that I had never promoted? I took the time to check out the site...then wrote to Leslynne asking for confirmation that these were paid members and not just free sign-ups...like me :) Well, it was true...I had 2865 paid members in my downline. This in a program that I had never worked! All I had to do was upgrade to a paid membership before the end of the month and I would have my position locked in and a downline of 2865 people. You can bet I wasted no time in getting my membership upgraded! I can tell you, if I had known what was happening with this program, I would have become an active paid member months ago! With this program, you will get a HUGE downline of PAID MEMBERS. My sponsor's check, which is a minimum of $5,000, arrives every month...on time. How would you like to lock your position in FREE while you check out this opportunity and watch your downline grow? You can join FREE: To sign up simply reply to: rdecos@excite.com Type in Subject: Send My FREE Membership (required) Type in Letter: Your First and Last Name (required) Your Email Address (if different from above) We will confirm your position and send you a special report as soon as possible, and also Your Free Member Number. I'll get you entered and let you know how you can keep track of your growing downline. That's all there's to it. I'll then send you info, and you can make up your own mind. Warm regards, Dennis DeCos P.S. After having several negative experiences with network marketing companies I had pretty much given up on them. This company is different--it offers value, integrity, and a REAL opportunity to have your own home-based business... and finally make real money on the internet. Don't pass this up..you can sign up and test-drive the program for FREE. All you need to do is get your free membership. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This is a one time Email to you. I have always found the following cgi script very useful when trying to configure my XFree86 installations: http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines Visit this page, and be prepared to be asked about your video adaptor's technical characteristics, as well as your monitor's range of horizontal & vertical refresh rates. You will find these easily in the manuals / documentation that comes with your hardware. The CGI script will do its magic and output the optimal ModeLine lines for your setup. Copy/paste those in your XF86Config and try again... BTW, the -newbies list is *not* the place to ask questions like these. As it says, FREEBSD-NEWBIES Newbies activities discussion We cover any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere, including: independent learning and problem solving techniques, finding and using resources and asking for help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as Greg -- See complete headers for address and phone numbers To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Sat Jun 15 21:11:31 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from m20.unixathome.org (m20.unixathome.org [216.187.106.227]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12E9237B409; Sat, 15 Jun 2002 21:11:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: by m20.unixathome.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id A4AEF7AA6; Sun, 16 Jun 2002 00:10:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Dan Langille To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: The FreeBSD Diary: 2002-05-26 - 2002-06-15 Message-Id: <20020616041008.A4AEF7AA6@m20.unixathome.org> Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 00:10:08 -0400 (EDT) Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The FreeBSD Diary contains a large number of practical examples and how-to guides.
