Currently OpenLDAP-2.1.8 and OpenLDAP-2.0.27 are available. OpenLDAP Stable Release The OpenLDAP Software Stable release is the last release which has proven through general use to be the most stable release available. OpenLDAP-2.0.27, as of 20021018, is considered stable. The port is as up-to-date as humanly possible so I'm not sure what your concern is here. If you need bleeding edge features then compiling source code is nearly always the way to go.
