Ok, here's my list of pending issues for 4.6.1 and a brief
note about each:
4.6.1:
- READ_BIG
- myself, soren, and ian working on this
- weird install errors from CD on 4.6?
- I might be able to test RC2 for this (not sure if I can do an
install on the machine though)
- /usr/share/examples
- A regression from 4.5, not just cvsup but over half of
subdirs are empty, none are empty in 4.5 install. Needs
to be fixed and would be nice, but not critical for 4.6.1
- RC's built with -march=i686
- ask Murray if so..
I'm trying to work on READ_BIG when not fighting other fires today.
Murray, can you verify if RC1 and RC2 were built with -march=i686
somehow? Thanks. If anyone feels like looking into the
/usr/share/examples problem that would be nice.

Is the examples issue a problem with CVS not checking them out? Or is it an
issue of the release process not doing the right thing? I can't do the first
(no commit privs), but I can look at the second over this coming weekend if
we think its a release process issue.
I'll can also do some RC testing over the next week, as needed.

It's a release process problem, I think. I thought that Ruslan (CC-ed)
committed a fix for this problem to HEAD, but I don't know what the MFC
status is. Maybe he can shed a little light on this?

A work-around for RELENG_4_6 (if it's wanted) is to replace the bsd.subdir.=

This particular error threw us for a loop for a while till we determined
it was a driver error. We sent out replacement CDs and they still didn't
work. ;-)
It appears to happen at exactly the same point during the install process
for everyone, about 1/4 of the way through extracting files from the /bin
distro. From there is just locks up and the CD nolonger does
anything. Replacing the CD drive has been the only workaround so far.

Can you verify if these various drives use the same manufacturer and/or
did 4.5 work ok on these machines? The one I had here 4.5 worked ok
just 4.6 died. Also, if you have a machine available that this is
reproducible on, can you see if 4.6.1-RC2 images have the same

How big is the real fix? I personally wouldn't mind the workaround, but if
the fix isn't too big I'd rather just do it right to begin with.

Better commit the kludge to RELENG_4_*'s bsd.lib.mk so that ports
affected could still be built on these branches. (This fixes the
bug where the missing LIB=3D would result in bsd.lib.mk attempting
to build/install lib.a and lib_p.a.)

In every case 4.5 worked fine on the CD Drive, but 4.6 died. I didn't get
any config specifics because we were mostly trying to determine if it was
a media problem or not. However, most customers said it was an
"older" drive and one user said it was a Mistsumi 8x CDRom.
Right after the release of 4.6, while teaching the FBSD sysadmin classes,
I think I ran into this same problem, but from a different angle. I had
the class upgrade to 4.6 via CVSup and after re-compiling the kernel the
CDrom drive was no longer mountable. Since I was in class, I had no time
to research the problem and we just used an older kernel to finish the
class. So, all the CDroms in the rented class were the same and the all
died at 4.6, but worked with 4.5 so this may be the same problem. But, I
don't know.

ATA bugs aren't security related either but they are in 4.6.1. However, unless
someone else on re@ objects we can just go with the workaround for now.

Yes, we should apply Ruslan's quick workaround.

Yes, RC1 and RC2 were built on the newly donated
freebsd-stable.sentex.ca machine and unfortunately I didn't clean out
the polluted /etc/make.conf before building. Problem solved.
Also, we still need a new package set of the RELEASE_4_6_1 ports/.

Oh, I thought we weren't going to build new packages. I don't mind if we
do, but we need to let portmgr know. They need to be built with the new
libc.

Yes, I've emailed portmgr@ and offered to give them root on an
external box since Kris is on vacation. If we can get a new package
set build with the new libc that would be best.

What, bug? It's been fixed in 4.6-STABLE by merging the new bsd.lib.mk
from 5.0-CURRENT that does not have this problem.
