I encourage everyone to install this from scratch, and blow away your old system. The reason is that we want to get rid of all the old toolchain cruft that you may still have, from before the gcc3.1 import. Also, for various reasons there can be difficulties building world from the older -current snapshots. Note that this contains the UFS2 code which was committed recently. If you are so inclined you can create UFS2 filesystems with newfs -O 2. The bootblock has been updated with UFS2 support, so you can boot from either UFS1 or UFS2. See the -current mailing list archives for details about UFS2. This is probably the last snapshot I will make before 5.0-DP2, since you can now update your system with make buildworld. Please remember that this is 5.0-CURRENT. If you intend to buildworld often you are expected to read the cvs-all and freebsd-current mailing lists. See the "tracking -current" section in the handbook. The snapshot is in the usual place in my homedir on freefall: http://people.freebsd.org/~jake/sparc64/ Have fun. ESP is older FAS236 based narrow SCSI interface which was used on older machines like SS20/U1. U2 uses newer FAS366 chip which is wide SCSI. Either of these are supported as I remember. Someone had 42 days a while ago before they upgraded their kernel. I usually only ever get about 9 or 10 on my development boxes because I need to test new kernels. Despite knowing better I assumed that the Ultra 5 series machines had standard PC serial ports on the back. No problem, pull out my laplink cable, plug it into serial port b, setenv in the Openboot and reboot. Now I can't get back onto the thing. It's booting for console on serial b I assume but the kernel crashes. That was the original reason to switch the console to serial so I could capture the boot error and post it to the group. I did a make buildworld yesterday and it worked fine. kernel has some error with setrootbyname failed. This is all with latest -current cvsup from yesterday. Anyway, not really a problem if I can get console back! Plugging back in keyboard etc doesn't seem to work. Turn power on while holding Stop-A does nothing. I can't seem to get serial b actually working. Problably requires a crossover on the Tx-Rx. I've triend all the varients of plugging and unplugging, keyboard, video, serial but none of them have worked so far. I find jumpers on the mobo for switching between RS422 and RS-232. No mention in searching the internet which serial port that applies to. Desfault is RS-422. Must be ttyb I'm thinking now. Why does sun use a female DB25 for a serial port? What the deal. How do I get back my regular console. -bill wlloyd@slap.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-sparc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-sparc Wed Jun 26 10:15:55 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc@freebsd.org Received: from smoky.ca (CPE014090214598.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [24.157.205.72]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E223537B42B for ; Wed, 26 Jun 2002 10:14:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: from CPE014090214598.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com (CPE014090214598.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [24.157.205.72]) by smoky.ca (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g5QHIS602545 for ; Wed, 26 Jun 2002 13:18:28 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from sw@smoky.ca) Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 13:18:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Worotynec To: Subject: Re: Ultra 5 problems In-Reply-To: <000501c21d4c$97ed5a70$0264a8c0@slap.net> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-sparc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, 26 Jun 2002, William Lloyd wrote: > > Anyway, not really a problem if I can get console back! > [...] > > What the deal. Hmm, when I try to boot of this iso, the boot process seems to be starting OK, but then after lists out the various devices that it found (acd0 being the last one), it drops me into a "mountroot" prompt, asking for the Manual root filesystem specification. I try things like 'ufs:acd0a', or even 'ufs:ad0a' (the root partition on the hard disk from the previous install) but nothing seems to successfully get me past that point. I am trying this on an ultra-10, one which I had installed the previous ISO on. I don't remember hitting this mountroot prompt at that time. I don't see it in the installation notes for sparc64. (have those installation notes been updated at all?) Is anyone else seeing this? I did a make buildworld yesterday and it worked fine. kernel has > some error with setrootbyname failed. This is all with latest -current I just figured out what this problem is. For some reason, when ATA_STATIC_ID is defined, the ata driver probes the cmd646 controller in ultra 5s and ultra 10s as ata2, which makes the first ata drive show up as ad4, rather than ad0 as one would expect. So, if you build a new kernel and get this error mounting root: Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad0a setrootbyname failed ffs_mountroot: can't find rootvp Root mount failed: 6 Manual root filesystem specification: : Mount using filesystem eg. ufs:da0a ? List valid disk boot devices Abort manual input Look at the drive probes just above and you will probably see your drive on ad4: ad4: 4103MB [8894/15/63] at ata2-master WDMA2 To fix this, boot kernel.old, comment out options ATA_STATIC_ID from your kernel config and rebuild your kernel. ATA_STATIC_ID has been removed from GENERIC in rev 1.23. Jake To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-sparc" in the body of the message
