Yes, because there is no standard for programming graphics cards beyond the ancient VGA capabilities. With VESA, you can access the card-specific BIOS for this work. Otherwise you would need an XFree86-like driver collection. -- Christian "naddy" Weisgerber naddy@mips.inka.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Jan 28 6:53:18 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E7A1837B401 for ; Tue, 28 Jan 2003 06:53:17 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.tepkom.ru (mail.tepkom.ru [195.9.10.14]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66CA443E4A for ; Tue, 28 Jan 2003 06:53:16 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wart@mojo.tepkom.ru) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.tepkom.ru (Postfix) with SMTP id 70F32971F8 for ; Tue, 28 Jan 2003 17:55:23 +0300 (MSK) Received: from mojo.tepkom.ru (mojo.tepkom.ru [195.9.10.30]) by mail.tepkom.ru (Postfix) with ESMTP id 51C7D971D9 for ; Tue, 28 Jan 2003 17:55:23 +0300 (MSK) Received: from wart by mojo.tepkom.ru with local (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 18dX6n-00006o-00 for ; Tue, 28 Jan 2003 17:53:05 +0300 Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 17:53:05 +0300 From: Wartan Hachaturow To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Higher resolution text modes on alpha? The question was more like "anyone seen the project on running, say, vesa module on non-x86?" :) As far as I understand, vesa module uses int 10h to access the VGA bios, wich isn't true on non-x86. -- Regards, Wartan. The Problem is that the BIOS on your graphic card was written for x86 CPUs. SRM emulates an 80286 to initialize the card, but this emulation is not available inside of FreeBSD. Even the 80286 emulation may not be enough for modern cards. There is a lot of work to make the vesa working on non x86 and I doubt that this would be very fast. My previous attempt gave me a speedup factor of 2.8. Loading 8 longs instead of only one at a time, and using data prefetch (... which might be a bit too implementation specific to work on all alphas), results in even faster execution for long strings. (A speedup factor of 4.35, on my machine using the best compiler+options.) I'm trying to use a Symbios/LSI Logic SYM22910 dual-channel, U2W SCSI controller with various hard drives. With some drives (specifically IBM DDYS-34560 UW drives) everything appears to function just fine, However, with other drives the controller and SRM see the drive, but exer_werite on the drive doesn't work and FreeBSD doesn't see the drive. During boot of the 5.0 miniinst CD I get (noperiph:sym0:-1:-1) or something of the sort for both channels after the "waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices" message appears. Some wise Alpha people (in #Alpha on freenode; #FreeBSD-alpha seems to be fairly empty a lot of the time) advised me to "chmod +w dka300.3.0.6.0", which worked fine and gave me no errors. At that point I was able to "exer -a w dka300" just fine, as well as exer_write the drive, but FreeBSD's dmesg still didn't show a drive present. What gives? The drives are jumpered properly, the same drives/cables/controller/terminators work fine in an x86 machine and the 4.5G IBM drives all work fine in the Alpha...Why won't the other drives?. I've updated the controller's firmware and the drive's firmware when applicable. I've tried just about everything I can think of. Any ideas would be appreciated. This could be cabeling problem and/or a defective drive. The kernel has no other choice than to terminate a process for which it can reread its memory from swap. -- B.Walter COSMO-Project http://www.cosmo-project.de ticso@cicely.de Usergroup info@cosmo-project.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Thu Jan 30 17:45:44 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D9E937B405 for ; Thu, 30 Jan 2003 17:45:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from srv1.cosmo-project.de (srv1.cosmo-project.de [213.83.6.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 536F743FAF for ; Thu, 30 Jan 2003 17:45:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ticso@cicely8.cicely.de) Received: from cicely5.cicely.de (cicely5.cicely.de [IPv6:3ffe:400:8d0:301:200:92ff:fe9b:20e7]) by srv1.cosmo-project.de (8.12.5/8.12.5) with ESMTP id h0V1jTUc031561 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=OK); Fri, 31 Jan 2003 02:45:33 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely8.cicely.de) Received: from cicely8.cicely.de (cicely8.cicely.de [10.1.1.10]) by cicely5.cicely.de (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h0V1jSMc044182 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NO); Fri, 31 Jan 2003 02:45:28 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely8.cicely.de) Received: from cicely8.cicely.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cicely8.cicely.de (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h0V1jRMS039025; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 02:45:27 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely8.cicely.de) Received: (from ticso@localhost) by cicely8.cicely.de (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id h0V1jRvi039024; Fri, 31 Jan 2003 02:45:27 +0100 (CET) Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 02:45:27 +0100 From: Bernd Walter To: Josh Tolbert Cc: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Unusual SCSI problem...
