The disks are attached to a Promise ATA100 PCI IDE Controller, and both devices are detected on boot as follows: ad0: 58644MB [119150/16/63] at ata2-master UDMA100 ad1: 114473MB [232581/16/63] at ata2-slave UDMA100 The corresponding entries in fstab taken from the sparc64 installation are: /dev/ad1f /data1 ufs rw 2 2 /dev/ad0d /data2 ufs rw 2 2 However, neither 'ad0d' or 'ad1f' exist on the Alpha, and bsdlabel simply returns: willow# bsdlabel /dev/ad0 bsdlabel: /dev/ad0: no valid label found If I put the drives back into the sparc64 box all is well, so it's not something that's happened physically to the drives during removal and reinstallation. Any ideas? This is actually the first time I've really messed with 5.x and devfs in particular so it might be something obvious I'm neglecting to do, but I can't see it. I'm not really a big Sparc64 or Alpha expert, but I think you're running into the troubles of different byte-ordering issues. AFAIK Sparc64 is big-endian and Alpha is little-endian, so exchanging disks between these architectures won't work without some extra programming effort... The machine has been rock solid with FreeBSD for years. It's been cvsupped and rebuilt within the past two months. Today, I tried to configure a NIC for DHCP and saw a bunch of unaligned access errors when I rebooted. The machine came up, but ifconfig showed the NIC as UP with an IP address of 0.0.0.0. I'm not at the machine right now (and have no Internet access there until I get DHCP working), so I can't simply cut-and-paste the errors. I found lots of references to this sort of error while searching online, but they're all a year or three old -- nothing later than Oct 2002. The latest message was about this problem being fixed. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas about a solution? Thanks, all... -- Michael A.
