It's broken for me, as long as I remember. The real application which best shows off is KNode, just jump into some big binaries group and start sniffing around. Download some pictures as fast as you can click and watch in a row, then stop some downloads and it'll die. But only if the threading library is libthr. Besides that, this new library was said to be snap-in replacement for libc_r and considered to work with KDE and Mozilla. At that point the HDD-IO activity goes to nearly zero, even though all active programs are waiting for the swapper to swap in their memory, when it has gone that far there are almost no keyboard echo, and the only option is to push the reset button. The last data I got from top was something like this (I can't recall all the details): Active memory: about 700K, Inactive: about 400K - 700K, Wired: 230M+, Cache: not sure, but I think it was around 5M to 10M Buf: around 10M - 30M Free: 300K - 700K Swap usage: at least 150M. This enables READ(16), WRITE(16) and READ CAPACITY(16) support. Note that that patch bumps CAM_VERSION, so you'll need to recompile libcam, camcontrol and any ports that talk to CAM. (e.g. cdrecord, cdda2wav, xmcd, etc.) If you have a device that supports 16 byte commands, but you don't have 2TB or more worth of disk space on it, you can still try out the 16 byte commands by increasing the minimum command size. For da0, you'd do: sysctl -w kern.cam.da.0.minimum_cmd_size=16 DO NOT try that on your boot disk unless you're sure it supports 16 byte commands. Otherwise you'll have a fine time trying to crank the value back down when you can't get to the sysctl binary because you're trying to use 16 byte reads to read it. :) Please send me feedback if you test these patches out. I'd also like testers with normal SCSI hardware. Your disks should work as before. In particular, make sure the disk capacity information that is printed out via dmesg for each disk is the same before and after the patch. I plan on checking this in before the 5.1 freeze. Also, while they're enabled, some programs (most reproduceably artsd) peg my CPU after outputting sound data in certain situations. Disabling vchans fixes the problem. The problem's a little ephemeral, so I'm still collecting hard data, but it seems I have to go all the way to properly disable them, e.g. kldload snd_pcm sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans=0 kldload snd_ Simply turning them off after the drivers have been loaded does not seem sufficient. I've been seeing this on my laptop since I -currentified it, which was early this month. I dismissed it as CS4281-specific until it began happening on my desktop with a recent build, on both a VIA VT8235-style AC97 chip -and- my SBLive. Thoughts? I updated and rebuilt on 4/16, 4/18, 4/19, 4/22, 4/23, and 4/24 and didn't have any trouble during that time even though that machine was getting a lot of use. I'm currently running a version of current from 4/26 and haven't seen any filesystem panics, though the system hasn't gotten much exercise since that update. One of the really nifty things with those (and probably others) is the command "show tech" (or "get tech" in NetScreen's case), which provides a rather complete debug dump including state information, statistics, configuration data, and the like, which can be used quite efficiently to pinpoint problems. How about introducing such a command to the kernel debugger? That way even a non-kernel-hacker such as myself would have a quite straight forward way of generating a good quality bug report. Say for example it was to include the stack trace, parameter printouts/dereferences for each of the frames, mutex states, memory stats, and some other useful goodies. Of course, if you don't have a serial terminal attached, it'll probably be too much info to copy by hand, but that's a separate issue. I'd love to back this idea up with patches, but I'm not a kernel hacker, and have no exposure to debugger internals either. If what I'm suggesting is infeasible, I'll take your word for it, but I thought I'd put the question out there at least. Comments? Would the resulting advantages compensate for the time invested in adding such a feature? Not a big problem, but here's what I did. Sources (and world) are from Apr 26. Seems like a problem with new ondisk format of spwd.db or similar. Sequence which broke: logged on remotely su to root, changed inetd.conf file to enable ftpd, killall -HUP inetd back to normal user, changed my password with passwd(1) tried to connect to ftpd, no luck As I had ssh session still up, looked into logfiles and found that root user does not exist, hmm.. tried to su -, same story, tried su to normal user.. you got the idea. -- Vallo Kallaste From owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 28 01:05:09 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-current@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1CCFE37B401 for ; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 01:05:09 -0700 (PDT) Received: from seed.net.tw (sn16.seed.net.tw [139.175.54.16]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D978343FA3 for ; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 01:05:07 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from leafy@chihiro.leafy.idv.tw) Received: from [210.64.98.49] (port=49260 helo=chihiro.leafy.idv.tw) by seed.net.tw with esmtp (Seednet 4.10:4) id 19A3dK-000A28-00 for freebsd-current@freebsd.org; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 16:05:07 +0800 Received: from chihiro.leafy.idv.tw (nobody@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by chihiro.leafy.idv.tw (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h3S855eZ001494 for ; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 16:05:05 +0800 (CST) (envelope-from leafy@chihiro.leafy.idv.tw) Received: (from leafy@localhost) by chihiro.leafy.idv.tw (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h3S855Eg001493 for freebsd-current@freebsd.org; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 16:05:05 +0800 (CST) Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 16:05:05 +0800 From: leafy To: freebsd-current@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030428080505.GA1474@chihiro.leafy.idv.tw> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-current@freebsd.org References: <20030428075916.GA53857@myhakas.internal> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=big5 Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030428075916.GA53857@myhakas.internal> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.4i Subject: Re: Somethings still up with new NSS? I had this happen to me. In my case, I changed my shell, logged out, then tried to log back in again. The console showed that sshd couldn't find my account, and I don't think it couldn find the privsep account either. I could not log in as root at the console either. I fixed the problem by booting single-user and re-running pwd_mkdb. The entries in master.passwd and passwd were correct, but I think that for some reason they weren't being read correctly from the database. My "make release" call looked like: make release CHROOTDIR=/data/RELEASE BUILDNAME=lBSD_de-CURRENT CVSROOT=/data/lbsd_de/cvsup-lbsdde/cvs RELEASETAG=STABLE So, i think this is correct, is started it at: /data/lbsd_de/lbsd_de/src/release/ So, if there is an error in my make release varibales, where is it. I thought the relative dearth of critical bug reports so far was too good to be true :-) Sounds like I have introduced a bug into `pwd_mkdb -u', which is the common denominator in your reports. `passwd', `chsh', `pw' all use `pwd_mkdb -u', whereas vipw uses plain `pwd_mkdb'. I will look at it closely today! Meanwhile, if this happens to you, just run `vipw' or `pwd_mkdb' to rebuild your database. Cheers, -- Jacques Vidrine . NTT/Verio SME . FreeBSD UNIX . Here's the scoop: The NSS commit included changes to update the format of /etc/pwd.db and /etc/spwd.db pre-processed passwd(5) files so that they could be moved from architecture to architecture. To enable compatibility with old binaries, the format includes versioned entries. (The `old version' is version 3; the `new version' is version 4.) pwd_mkdb(8) rebuilds the databases from /etc/master.passwd. This utility can either rebuild the entire database, which is the default behavior, or it can update only a single entry, which is the behavior requested by the `-u' option. passwd(1), chsh(1) and similar tools use the `-u' option. Now if you run `pwd_mkdb' built after the NSS commit, everything is fine. Version 3 and version 4 entries are created. Your old and new binaries will `see' all the users. But, if you run `pwd_mkdb -u' BEFORE you rebuild the entire database with plain `pwd_mkdb', the database will have version 3 entries for all of your users, but only a version 4 entry for the single target user. Old binaries still function fine, but new binaries now `see' that the database supports the new version 4 entries. So, only the single user that was updated is recognized. So until I add logic to pwd_mkdb(8) to recognize and deal appropriately with this situation, it is best to run pwd_mkdb once manually after the NSS commit. Cheers, -- Jacques Vidrine . I didn't have this problem as of 4/26. It could have been within those 24-48 hours. I just updated it the other day (Friday/Saturday), here's a 'uname -a': FreeBSD pilgrim.magda.ca 5.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #0: \ Sat Apr 26 00:02:46 EDT 2003 \ dave@pilgrim.magda.ca:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MYKERNEL5 i386 When I insert the Xircom card I get the following: cardbus0: at device 0.0 (no driver attached) sio4: port 0x1000-0x1007 \ mem 0x88002000-0x880027ff,0x88002800-0x88002fff \ irq 11 at device 0.1 on cardbus0 sio4: type 16550A cbb alloc res fail Investigating further, it seems a little while ago I took out the dc(4) driver from a kernel config file. Since I usually use my wireless network card (wi(4)) I didn't notice. If I load the if_dc.ko module I get another interface listed when I run 'ifconfig'. However, even if the module is loaded, when I pull the card it still panics. If I install the if_dc.ko module (and miibus) then the Ethernet card is recongized for what it is. I do still get the line "cbb alloc res fail". A 'trace' produces similiar output to the one I've aleady posted. Dmesg(8) output: Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project.
