After accessing a read-only ext2fs for some hours I got a "page fault" panic (or rarely a "getblk: size(7537385) > MAXBSIZE(65536)"). The backtrace was always somewhat different. Current from 2003.11.09.09.00.00 runs fine for > 10 hours. Current from 2003.11.09.09.20.00 crashed twice within less than 2 hours. The only src/sys commit in that time is http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/cvs-src/2003-November/013515.html where selwakeup()s is replaced with selwakeuppri(). So the problem must be somewhere in selwakeuppri(). I hope this can be resolved now. The machine has been reinstalled with 5.1-RELEASE-p11 - the software has the same setup as before. Everything works fine now, no leaking descriptors. Even though it's a long time, but this at least means that the bug was introduced somwehere between 5.1-RELEASE and 5.2-RCx I cannot do further tests now with this machine, because I have to get it out of the testing environment. There are some big steps between 5.1 and 5.2 (64 Bit statfs especially) which make it very difficult to go forth and back in the -CURRENT tree without recompiling a lot of stuff, which definitely keep me from further testing now. I can make no promises on the following: I try to setup another machine with a similar setup (much less powerful machine!) and try to reproduce the problem sometime in the first weeks of the new year. With the first start = of=20 kaudiokreator (a simple kde cdda ripper/encoder which uses kde builtin cd=20 routines afaik, no cdparanoia) everything is working fine. But when I restart the application (so it ran before) and select "refresh c= d=20 contents" the machine reboots after a few seconds of total freeze (neither= =20 the CAPS lock nor mouse etc is working). This is absolutely reproducable. I don't get the kernel debuger although I compiled my kernel with the optio= ns: makeoptions DEBUG=3D-g #Build kernel with gdb(1) debug options DDB How can I get an idea where the problem could be? And while I'm here I'd like to emhasize once again that hw.ata.atapi_dma is= =20 not working. Although the sysctl reports it to be 1, "atacontrol mode" and= =20 also dmesg while booting telling me that it's POI4. After "atacontrol mode 1 udma33 udma33" it's reported to be udma33. So the line hw.ata.atapi_dma=3D"1" in /boot/loader.conf is useless (I have= =20 checked that when I abort autoboot it really is set before booting) I posted this several times but never got an answer. I updated my patch to add in pthread support for webclient (see patch-ad): http://people.freebsd.org/~deischen/webstone.diffs I didn't add any of the necessary configure stuff that is in your patch. I also didn't add a synchronization point to start the client threads off and running. The fork() method didn't use any so I didn't see why using threads would be any different. I did join to the threads at the end, but even that isn't necessary since they will continue to run after the main thread ends (until the alarm goes off). I'm still not sure how to test this. Can you check ifconfig dc0? To have collisions, it must be running half-duplex. (By definition collision detection is disabled in FDX.) The additional errors further support this. The other question is what the other end of this link sees. Is it running full or half duplex? If full duplex, is it seeing input errors? It looks like it is assigning CPU usage not only to the process that is actually using it but to the parent processes as well. If I perform a 'portupgrade -a', for instance, I see many processes with the exact same percentage of CPU and they all look like parent processes (make, sh, etc.). It doesn't look right, but perhaps what I'm seeing is actually the case. Am I suppose to buildworld/installworld after I install a new kernel with the ULE scheduler? I wouldn't think so. I think the GCC currently in the tree is a prerelease of what eventually will become the 3.3.3 release and should be marked accordingly, but perhaps I just missed something. My reason for using the SATA channels was because I had already fully populated PATA - so using legacy mode was not an option. The SATA did work ok in Windows. Solution was found in a 3ware controller. Regrettably I'm no hacker, in fact I have= =20 problems reading simple c code and my knowledge about the design of BSD=20 kernels is limes 0. I'd be glad if I could since I had the time... One day I hope to find somebody who can explain me the basics of c=20 programming, not only the semantic and syntax, I have books for that, but t= he=20 whole bunch of tools and how to efficiently use them. I can't imagine codin= g=20 with vi nor with these bloated Eclipse is big fun. And then theese=20 overwhelming amount of libraries..... I wish I had one here to try (I've had an 8-drive 3ware running perfectly for well over a year on another box) In case you're not already familiar with 3ware: the cards do not present themselves as ATA controllers to the host OS. atacontrol does not see a 3ware card. All drive management is done in hardware/firmware on the card (unlike some) and only logical devices are presented to FreeBSD. For this reason I'd assume that the 8500 cards would be fine too. The problem is that I cannot have the duration of the battery on my laptop COMPAQ PRESARIO 1800 with BIOS phoenix (I don't find any update for the BIOS) I Have tried with APM and ACPI. With APM I can have the charge of it only in percent, but I don't know how to configure the POWER button to shutdown the machine as in ACPI. with ACPI I got some errors at the boot, and the suspend doesn't really work, the monitor stay on and when it "wake up" I get some errors that I think are related with the initial errors.
