Hi list,
I recently tried to print out out the Developer's Guide
at a local Kinko's. They refused because it is
copyrighted. They looked at page 2 of the guide, and
decided that it was not explicit stately that
reproduction was allowed (in printed form). Could that
page possibly explicitly state that it is permissible
to copy the Developer's handbook (with whatever
restrictions) in printed form? It would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you,
Pat Lathem

I'm not sure which "page 2" you're referring to, especially since I'm
not aware of a "Developer's Guide". Making a few assumptions, I'll
ask you to follow the "Copyright" link near the top of
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/index.html
Is THAT what Kinkos finds insufficient?
Do YOU think that would be insufficient? Do you think it should be?
Please state what you know of Kinkos' requirements (and it would be good
if you could find out and tell us, if you don't know much about them).
How are you supplying the "original"? A URL? A floppy file? Multiple
files? How will they accept it? Do they require that the license be in
the same file as the document? On the same web site? Will they consider
a semi-official (but non-binding) explanation of the license along with
the license which they can't (or won't) understand?
(This is the third time I've seen mention of Kinkos here.)

My apologies, yes I was referring to the Developer's Handbook. I
downloaded and printed off that section (the copyright section) which
happens to be page two of the RTF version. I thought it was quite
sufficient, especially given that the handbook is presented on the
official FreeBSD website. I have hard time following that it is
allowable to view it online, but not print it (I suppose that is their
interpretation). Specifically what they found insufficient was the lack
of mention of printed form. The terms are set forth for for source code
form, and compiled form clearly in numbered items.
Yes they do require the copyright information be specified within the
document. They asked me to print the relevant section and then had
someone review if I could "copy" it (just print it, honestly).
I believe a non-binding explanation would be acceptable, but I'm not
sure, as they don't seem to have a clear policy. I'll try to obtain a
copy of their copying policy next time I am there, and can send it to
the list if desired.
Thanks for your time,
Pat Lathem

Well, I'm glad you appreciated it, but it really wasn't a major effort
or anything - mostly just a bit of awk'ing on the respective sources.:-)
However, regarding the contractions: I can see where you're coming from,
since I gather that using them in "formal" documents is frowned upon -
but I must really strongly disagree with your suggestion to change the
code! The output of programs should not be changed for such "frivolous"
reasons - e.g. there may well be scripts etc out there that, however
unwisely, rely on the exact format of error messages to function
correctly. Not to mention that using contractions in error messages is a
long-standing Unix tradition, even in cases where the message doesn't
originate in sys_errlist.
I'd suggest that either you consider these strings to not be part of the
actual "document text" (which would be correct I think), and thereby
exempt from considerations of "good writing style" - or if that isn't
acceptable, leave the "Cannot"s in the man page and the "Can't"s in the
code - this discrepancy shouldn't matter *too* much to the reader, who
is unlikely to be searching the man page for "Can't" anyway...

I think

is quite clear on that point: you can print it :)

however to my knowledge when Bell Labs originally started producing
UNIX the code was actually changed to match the documentation in many
instances. People with more knowledge of UNIX history would be better
to ask about that, though. I just remember reading something like that,
Bruce Evans (bde) or Greg Lehey (grog) come to mind as the correct
people
to ask.

To the best of my knowledge, use of contractions is frowned upon in
FreeBSD. Again, this is an issue to take up with the respected parties.
I've taken the liberty to cc: them for input. Ideas?

This seems unlikely. The same people wrote the code and the docco;
it's unlikely that changes in the docco would make it out of sync with
the code base. It's possible, of course, that they occasionally wrote
docco changes first with the intention to change the code, and then
did it, but I don't suppose that's what you're talking about.

I don't know about the project, but I frown on some contractions and
not others. In general, if the contraction is used in normal speech
("can't") I'd think it's OK. If it isn't ("cont'd"), I'd disagree
with its use.

>Description:
This is a pretty simple update that makes the firewall rules used for
dialup machines significantly more secure and much smaller. If there
are no objections, I'd like to commit this in a week.
FWIW, I had it pointed out to me that there is a decided lack of examples
for ipfw(8) so I'm idly updating various articles/books bits that I've
seen that need updating. Is there anyone else doing similar bits?

Sean,
This looks good, but please commit the whitespace changes separately
(the EOL change and the s/ruleset/rule set/ ones).
Thanks,

Few small bits in this:
1) Update for the .emacs example to add highlighting of whitespace.
2) Nuked whitespace that I noticed.
3) Ran a spell checker over the doc and Americanized some very common
American English words (intepreted -> interpreted,
optimise -> optimize ). Those words are seen frequently enough that
non-American and non-Brittish folks may stumble over their non-
American English spellings so I corrected them.
Honestly, I'm only really interested in #1, but #2 and #3 kinda came
for free during the update. Any preferences on how I should commit
this? (#1 + #3), then #2? ::shrug::

Hi,
This is something that has popped up every so often on the mailing
lists, and a blurb has been added to the ports-supfile example in the
source tree. However, there are still people who do not realize the
full importance of updating the ports-base subcollection; here is a
patch to the Handbook and the FAQ that will hopefully bring their number
down even more.
As usual, any comments, suggestions, and flames are welcome.
G'luck,
Peter

+ I updated parts of the Ports Collection using CVSup, and
+ now many ports fail to build with mysterious error messages!
+ What happened? Is the Ports Collection broken in some major
+ way?
+
+
+
+ If you only update parts of the Ports Collection, using
+ one of its CVSup subcollections and not the
+ ports-all CVSup collection, you should
+ always update the
+ ports-base subcollection too! The reasons
+ are described in the
+ Handbook.

I only eyeballed the patch, no build, but the language seems fine. Great id=

Current FreeBSD problem reports
The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users.
These represent problem reports covering all versions including
experimental development code and obsolete releases.
Bugs can be in one of several states:
o - open
A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed.
a - analyzed
The problem is understood and a solution is being sought.
f - feedback
Further work requires additional information from the
originator or the community - possibly confirmation of
the effectiveness of a proposed solution.
p - patched
A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or
confirmation from originator) are still open.
s - suspended
The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information
or resources. This is a prime candidate
for somebody who is looking for a project to do.
If the problem cannot be solved at all,
it will be closed, rather than suspended.
c - closed
A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated,
documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned.

Exactly that. Sorry, it can be a pain.

Whether correct or not, I don't really see the relevance of that. Of
course I didn't suggest that code must *never* be changed to match
documentation, only that code changes that may actually break things
should not be done just to match someone's idea of "good writing style"
for the man page.
On the other hand, in this particular case the FreeBSD (or *BSD, I don't
have another dialect to test) code might actually be a bit out-of-sync
with the rest of the Unix family. A survey of two other Unices isn't
exactly conclusive, and there's nothing to say that FreeBSD must be like
everyone else, but anyway:
Solaris 8:
$ ./a.out
bind: Cannot assign requested address
RedHat 7.3:
$ ./a.out
bind: Cannot assign requested address
FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE:
$ ./a.out
bind: Can't assign requested address
The same difference exists for the other messages that are contractions
in the FreeBSD sys_errlist[].
And with that "contribution" I will respectfully leave this discussion,
letting the committers sort out what should be changed where and why.

This seems unlikely. The same people wrote the code and the docco;
it's unlikely that changes in the docco would make it out of sync with
the code base.

Lots of eol whitespace at the last added line above. I usually try to
avoid adding lines with whitespace at the end of one or more lines.

Some lines use 8 spaces instead of tab characters for indentation, but
I can't really see anything gravely wrong about the changes. Commit
it, please.

#2 should definitely be done in a separate commit. #1 and #3 are
obviously unrelated to each other, so there... you need 3 commits :)

>Description:
The PPP section in the handbook needs some cleaning. There is alot of
good and useful information availible, just you need to weed through
a lot of `unneeded' information.
>How-To-Repeat:
Set up a ppp connection (which I have not done in awhile, just did, and
read over the section).
>Fix:
Perhaps an overhaul. Move some of the manual connection information I added
toward the bottom and name it `debugging' and perhaps clean up a few of the
other paragraphs. From what I noticed, some ISP's offer information regarding
`script connections' which was what I used for my girlfriend's laptop, perhaps
this should be mentioned.
The ppp.conf file needs a slight update.
Perhaps the first part could be a walkthrough, and then put other options
toward the middle of the document, and debugging at the bottom. I lack
the time to do this myself.

I have a few comments on what looks like a useful patch:

These a re two separate clauses, so a semicolon or full stop would be
more appropriate after "4.X".

In addition, s/will need/need/.

I notice we use "ruleset" and "rule set" inconsistently through doc
and www - I agree that we should prefer "rule set".
