Turning off CSS in NS 4.x works around it. This is probably a bug in NS, but one can never be sure. If you want to help resolving this problem, you could comment out parts of the stylesheets to see where exactly it breaks. - Christian --=20 Christian Brueffer chris@unixpages.org brueffer@FreeBSD.org GPG Key: http://people.freebsd.org/~brueffer/brueffer.key.asc GPG Fingerprint: A5C8 2099 19FF AACA F41B B29B 6C76 178C A0ED 982D --cWoXeonUoKmBZSoM Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQE+hvSSbHYXjKDtmC0RAkA8AJ49g6iuH6Oob821PmAcNNcM5VeXIgCg7Z8G 3ZeVMxPgdDhk7e48LecvaLI= =BKq6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --cWoXeonUoKmBZSoM-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 30 07:12:39 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35DA037B401 for ; Sun, 30 Mar 2003 07:12:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from postal.netaxs.com (postal.netaxs.com [207.8.186.39]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 961B343FDD for ; Sun, 30 Mar 2003 07:12:38 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from clear@alum.mit.edu) Received: from alum.mit.edu (root@unix5.netaxs.com [207.8.186.7]) h2UFCaPI005612; Sun, 30 Mar 2003 10:12:36 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <3E870960.6932AC90@alum.mit.edu> Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2003 10:12:32 -0500 From: Jed Clear Organization: Dis X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.8 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en,pdf MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Christian Brueffer References: <3E86ED7E.B47BD5F1@alum.mit.edu> <20030330134346.GA25469@unixpages.org> Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature"; micalg=sha1; boundary="------------ms4D0D556FA785EDF64E493BA3" cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: HTML in Handbook/Install X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2003 15:12:42 -0000 This is a cryptographically signed message in MIME format. --------------ms4D0D556FA785EDF64E493BA3 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit If I point NS4.8 at my local Apache 2 server to look at the Handbook included with 4.7-RELEASE-p7, then SOME of the screen shots behave themselves, but others don't. They still refer to the majordomo and the instructions for Mailman are much different. I don't know if Mailman is here for good but if it is, the docs need to be updated. In addition, you can now subscribe on line by accessing your list from http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/ and using the online form. Thinking of all of the misplaced subcribe messages I see, this deserved a "WOW!!". This ability also needs to be updated on www.freebsd.org and Appendix C of the Handbook. For the most part, a link to ../mailman/listinfo could replace the URL link to the mailing lists on the web page. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. It's not very different from having the source of the entire system in /usr/src and the installed versions scattered around the whole place:P Besides, /usr/share/doc is just the default location. You can always override it with DOCDIR. I keep a checked out copy of the docs in /a/doc and generate daily copies of the el_GR.ISO8859-7 subdir with a script that includes: cd /a/doc/el_GR.ISO8859-7 for fmt in html html-split txt ;do export DOCDIR="/tmp/doc/${fmt}" rm -fr "${DOCDIR}" mkdir -p "${DOCDIR}" || break make FORMATS="${fmt}" clean && \ make FORMATS="${fmt}" all && \ make FORMATS="${fmt}" install done DOCDIR makes sure that the installed versions go to a place that isn't /usr/share/doc. I don't like the idea of giving write permissions to that directory to my non-root user :) - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 31 13:00:25 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0AF437B401 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:00:25 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D8DF143FAF for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:00:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h2VL0OUp038901 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:00:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h2VL0OfX038900; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:00:24 -0800 (PST) Resent-Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:00:24 -0800 (PST) Resent-Message-Id: <200303312100.h2VL0OfX038900@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Tim Bishop Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 313CA37B401 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 12:57:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from mercury.ukc.ac.uk (mercury.ukc.ac.uk [129.12.21.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 709B643FAF for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 12:57:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from T.D.Bishop@ukc.ac.uk) Received: from pendennis.ukc.ac.uk ([129.12.3.232]) by mercury.ukc.ac.uk with esmtp (Exim 3.22 #4) id 1906Jk-0003vZ-00; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:55:44 +0100 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=pendennis.ukc.ac.uk) by pendennis.ukc.ac.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.12) id 1906Jk-000Fv8-00; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:55:44 +0100 Received: (from tdb@localhost) by pendennis.ukc.ac.uk (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id h2VKti9j061201; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:55:44 +0100 (BST) Message-Id: <200303312055.h2VKti9j061201@pendennis.ukc.ac.uk> Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:55:44 +0100 (BST) From: Tim Bishop To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 cc: tim@bishnet.net Subject: docs/50501: Add UK rsync mirror X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Tim Bishop List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:00:27 -0000 >Number: 50501 >Category: docs >Synopsis: Add UK rsync mirror >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: change-request >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Mon Mar 31 13:00:24 PST 2003 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Tim Bishop >Release: FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE i386 >Organization: >Environment: System: FreeBSD pendennis.ukc.ac.uk 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #1: Wed Feb 12 09:53:04 GMT 2003 tdb@pendennis.ukc.ac.uk:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PENDENNIS i386 >Description: Add UK rsync mirror of the full ftp site. The reason I ask is that emacs seems to add some extra indentation when faced with a linebreak in the middle of a tag. Get a POP or IMAP daemon from the ports collection and install + url="../../../../ports/mail.html">ports collection and install it on your system. This is with (indent-tabs-mode nil), (sgml-indent-step 2), and (sgml-indent-data t) set in my .emacs. (But that shouldn't matter, since the docs set local variables, right?) majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com: This help message is being sent to you from the Majordomo mailing list management system at majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com. This is version 1.94.5 of Majordomo. If you're familiar with mail servers, an advanced user's summary of Majordomo's commands appears at the end of this message. Majordomo is an automated system which allows users to subscribe and unsubscribe to mailing lists, and to retrieve files from list archives. You can interact with the Majordomo software by sending it commands in the body of mail messages addressed to "majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com". Please do not put your commands on the subject line; Majordomo does not process commands in the subject line. You may put multiple Majordomo commands in the same mail message. Put each command on a line by itself. If you use a "signature block" at the end of your mail, Majordomo may mistakenly believe each line of your message is a command; you will then receive spurious error messages. To keep this from happening, either put a line starting with a hyphen ("-") before your signature, or put a line with just the word end on it in the same place. This will stop the Majordomo software from processing your signature as bad commands. Here are some of the things you can do using Majordomo: I. FINDING OUT WHICH LISTS ARE ON THIS SYSTEM To get a list of publicly-available mailing lists on this system, put the following line in the body of your mail message to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com: lists Each line will contain the name of a mailing list and a brief description of the list. To get more information about a particular list, use the "info" command, supplying the name of the list. For example, if the name of the list about which you wish information is "demo-list", you would put the line info demo-list in the body of the mail message. II. SUBSCRIBING TO A LIST Once you've determined that you wish to subscribe to one or more lists on this system, you can send commands to Majordomo to have it add you to the list, so you can begin receiving mailings. To receive list mail at the address from which you're sending your mail, simply say "subscribe" followed by the list's name: subscribe demo-list If for some reason you wish to have the mailings go to a different address (a friend's address, a specific other system on which you have an account, or an address which is more correct than the one that automatically appears in the "From:" header on the mail you send), you would add that address to the command. For instance, if you're sending a request from your work account, but wish to receive "demo-list" mail at your personal account (for which we will use "jqpublic@my-isp.com" as an example), you'd put the line subscribe demo-list jqpublic@my-isp.com in the mail message body. Based on configuration decisions made by the list owners, you may be added to the mailing list automatically. You may also receive notification that an authorization key is required for subscription. Another message will be sent to the address to be subscribed (which may or may not be the same as yours) containing the key, and directing the user to send a command found in that message back to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com. (This can be a bit of extra hassle, but it helps keep you from being swamped in extra email by someone who forged requests from your address.) You may also get a message that your subscription is being forwarded to the list owner for approval; some lists have waiting lists, or policies about who may subscribe. If your request is forwarded for approval, the list owner should contact you soon after your request. Upon subscribing, you should receive an introductory message, containing list policies and features. Save this message for future reference; it will also contain exact directions for unsubscribing. If you lose the intro mail and would like another copy of the policies, send this message to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com: intro demo-list (substituting, of course, the real name of your list for "demo-list"). III. UNSUBSCRIBING FROM MAILING LISTS Your original intro message contains the exact command which should be used to remove your address from the list. However, in most cases, you may simply send the command "unsubscribe" followed by the list name: unsubscribe demo-list (This command may fail if your provider has changed the way your address is shown in your mail.) To remove an address other than the one from which you're sending the request, give that address in the command: unsubscribe demo-list jqpublic@my-isp.com In either of these cases, you can tell majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com to remove the address in question from all lists on this server by using "*" in place of the list name: unsubscribe * unsubscribe * jqpublic@my-isp.com IV. FINDING THE LISTS TO WHICH AN ADDRESS IS SUBSCRIBED To find the lists to which your address is subscribed, send this command in the body of a mail message to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com: which You can look for other addresses, or parts of an address, by specifying the text for which Majordomo should search. For instance, to find which users at my-isp.com are subscribed to which lists, you might send the command which my-isp.com Note that many list owners completely or fully disable the "which" command, considering it a privacy violation. V. FINDING OUT WHO'S SUBSCRIBED TO A LIST To get a list of the addresses on a particular list, you may use the "who" command, followed by the name of the list: who demo-list Note that many list owners allow only a list's subscribers to use the "who" command, or disable it completely, believing it to be a privacy violation. VI. RETRIEVING FILES FROM A LIST'S ARCHIVES Many list owners keep archives of files associated with a list. These may include: - back issues of the list - help files, user profiles, and other documents associated with the list - daily, monthly, or yearly archives for the list To find out if a list has any files associated with it, use the "index" command: index demo-list If you see files in which you're interested, you may retrieve them by using the "get" command and specifying the list name and archive filename. For instance, to retrieve the files called "profile.form" (presumably a form to fill out with your profile) and "demo-list.9611" (presumably the messages posted to the list in November 1996), you would put the lines get demo-list profile.form get demo-list demo-list.9611 in your mail to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com. VII. GETTING MORE HELP To contact a human site manager, send mail to Majordomo-Owner@wantadilla.lemis.com. To contact the owner of a specific list, send mail to that list's approval address, which is formed by adding "-approval" to the user-name portion of the list's address. For instance, to contact the list owner for demo-list@wantadilla.lemis.com, you would send mail to demo-list-approval@wantadilla.lemis.com. To get another copy of this help message, send mail to majordomo@wantadilla.lemis.com with a line saying help in the message body. VIII. I have no idea what a proper fix would be in the case of res_mkquery. i have no idea what this function is supposed to return. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Apr 3 15:53:51 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 65BDB37B401; Thu, 3 Apr 2003 15:53:51 -0800 (PST) Received: from haakonia.hitnet.rwth-aachen.de (haakonia.hitnet.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.181.92]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8BED043F3F; Thu, 3 Apr 2003 15:53:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from chris@unixpages.org) Received: from gondor.middleearth (gondor.middleearth [192.168.1.42]) by haakonia.hitnet.rwth-aachen.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id E9A47A91E; Fri, 4 Apr 2003 01:53:49 +0200 (CEST) Received: by gondor.middleearth (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 9B989466F; Fri, 4 Apr 2003 01:53:49 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 4 Apr 2003 01:53:49 +0200 From: Christian Brueffer To: Nik Clayton Message-ID: <20030403235349.GD583@unixpages.org> References: <20030320012703.GA3627@unixpages.org> <20030328094608.GB875@clan.nothing-going-on.org> <20030329113559.GD875@clan.nothing-going-on.org> <20030329123211.GB598@unixpages.org> <20030329134420.GI875@clan.nothing-going-on.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="qftxBdZWiueWNAVY" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030329134420.GI875@clan.nothing-going-on.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT X-PGP-Key: http://people.freebsd.org/~brueffer/brueffer.key.asc X-PGP-Fingerprint: A5C8 2099 19FF AACA F41B B29B 6C76 178C A0ED 982D cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: txt and html versions of the handbook on ftp-master broken X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 03 Apr 2003 23:53:51 -0000 --qftxBdZWiueWNAVY Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Sat, Mar 29, 2003 at 01:44:20PM +0000, Nik Clayton wrote: > On Sat, Mar 29, 2003 at 01:32:11PM +0100, Christian Brueffer wrote: > > Yes, everything seems to be correct now. Now that's out of the way: In August last year, a commit was made to change the website to XHTML, and since then, all the documents built from SGML have been happily announcing in their DOCTYPE declaration that they are XHTML 1.0 Transitional. However, with the exception of the front page of the web site, they aren't; none of them validate. I've started working on getting them to validate. It's not difficult, it's just donkey work really, and I don't mind doing it, but now that I've finished www/en/*sgml I'd like to get some feedback before I go any further. The patch for the above is at http://people.freebsd.org/~ceri/xhtml.diff. Main points of interest/concern are: 1. Upper case elements and attributes have to go. e.g., needs to become . 2. All tags need to be closed. e.g., needs to become . #1 and #2 strike me as possible targets for complaints about repo-bloat. 3. &header; had to be ripped into three pieces, as sgmlnorm won't let you leave an entity at a different level to that which you entered it. Thus the opening had to be taken out of &header;. I've tried to compensate for this by moving some stuff into freebsd.css but I have no idea how CSSs work (and I'd like that to validate too), so we now have '' in all the SGML documents. 4. As part of #3, we now also have to have &navbar; everywhere we want the navigation bar - it can't stay inside &header;. Again, #3 and #4 cause me some concern; we know have X documents to edit if we want to change the alink colour, but I'm wondering why we're specifying this anyway in all honesty. 5. I haven't messed about with web.site.mk enough to make this conditional; therefore, only the documents I have "fixed" build. I'm worried about what happens when I get to www/es and anything else in a language foreign to me. One way around #5 is to introduce XMLDOCS in the Makefiles and move conforming documents there from DOCS, and add a bit of glue to web.site.mk to deal with them. I understand that my proposal is somewhat incomplete at the moment, but while I'd really like to see the web site validate, I don't know if this is something that the collective wants. Take this as a request for comments, with a patch that is merely illustrative, not complete. Oh, I know that ;^) To be honest, I've quite enjoyed doing this, so it's no hassle. I just want to get some consensus before I start making sweeping changes to the tree, plus I could do with a bit of input on whether I'm doing this The Right Way. First, this is the freebsd-doc mailing list -- primary place for discussing the documentation of FreeBSD. You'd be better off to ask this on questions@freebsd.org . Also, please do check out chapter 9 (specifically section 4 thereof) of the FreeBSD handbook (available at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ ), which gives detailed instructions on how to build your kernel (what you'd need to do to get your network card working). Being that you used Outlook Express to send your email, I presume that you don't have FreeBSD installed as of yet. Take a look at the handbook from the beginning, which provides excellent information on how to install FreeBSD, and docs on pretty much all major facilities of the system.=20 --=-4gC8K4rOi2mQEYh4Vdjd Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQA+jybNUdqurN0fljsRAqvdAJ9os6d75vUEUzYhTcOlcMUG1jNz7gCggAof UuSfoQH3bGVxfbuRWAhw5vM= =YT6E -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-4gC8K4rOi2mQEYh4Vdjd-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 5 10:56:50 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6734537B401 for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 10:56:50 -0800 (PST) Received: from pittgoth.com (14.zlnp1.xdsl.nauticom.net [209.195.149.111]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A3FA43FA3 for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 10:56:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from trhodes@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mobile.pittgoth.com (acs-24-154-229-196.zoominternet.net [24.154.229.196]) by pittgoth.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) with SMTP id h35IulBG044097; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 13:56:47 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from trhodes@FreeBSD.org) Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 13:55:24 -0500 From: Tom Rhodes To: Maximum DBZ Message-Id: <20030405135524.10570f17.trhodes@FreeBSD.org> In-Reply-To: <000801c2fba3$3f556fc0$0301a8c0@maxdbz> References: <000801c2fba3$3f556fc0$0301a8c0@maxdbz> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.8.10claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.0) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: how do i....? You seem to be talking about a higher-level Right Way than the following, but I thought I'd mention it for those who don't already know about it. http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#guidelines is titled "HTML Compatibility Guidelines" and it begins with "This appendix summarizes design guidelines for authors who wish their XHTML documents to render on existing HTML user agents." I wrote these notes while reading it about a year ago: -- use both the encoding attribute specification on the xml declaration (e.g. ) and a meta http-equiv statement (e.g. ). The value of the encoding attribute of the xml processing instruction takes precedence. -- Always use "&" for "&", esp. in attr. vals. -- Use
    , not
and same for other empty elements. -- Use
