From what I have read, >8.4GB disks can have more than 16383 cylinders, but should still report just 16383 because modern disks give their size information via a different interface. Either I have misinterpreted the standard or this is a non-standard disk. Either way, sysinstall complains during the fdisk phase that this drive configuration is 'impossible' and picks other values for the C/H/S info, suggesting that I put the geom in by hand during fdisk. I did the (g) option and entered in what I thought was the right thing 16383/16/63. The install proceeded and things seem to work. The reported size of the disk never changed through any of this. But I wonder, was the the right thing to do? Should I have taken the 4863/255/63 numbers that sysinstall suggested? I am not subscribed to this list, so please respond directly. thanks, -r From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 28 09:44:59 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 448C937B401 for ; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 09:44:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from web40605.mail.yahoo.com (web40605.mail.yahoo.com [66.218.78.142]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id CEDB043F3F for ; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 09:44:58 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from eduhuertas@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20030428164458.18510.qmail@web40605.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [168.234.139.84] by web40605.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 11:44:58 CDT Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 11:44:58 -0500 (CDT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Eduardo=20Huertas?= To: Adrian , freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: RE: 3Com U.S. Robotics ISDN Pro TA X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 16:44:59 -0000 --- Adrian escribió: > yes ppp.conf is good and is as below: > > /etc/ppp/ppp.conf > default: > # set log All > set log Local Phase Chat Connect tun CCP LCP IPCP > myisp: > set escape 0xff > set device /dev/cuaa0 > set speed 115200 > set timeout 0 > set phone 01234565789 > set login > set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 4 > \"\" ATZ OK-ATZ-OK > ATD\\T TIMEOUT 60 CONNECT" > set server /var/run/ppp "" 0177 > set authname mylogin > set authkey mypasswd > set ifaddr 1.1.1.1 2.2.2.2 255.255.255 1.1.1.1 > add default HISADDR > > I have tailed the logs and can watch the whole > sequence and it just says > chat script failed no mention of pap or auth > > This is on 4.7, 4.8, 5.0 and 5.0 current. :( > > -----Original Message----- > From: Eduardo Huertas [mailto:eduhuertas@yahoo.com] > Sent: 25 April 2003 15:37 > To: Adrian; freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: 3Com U.S. Robotics ISDN Pro TA > > > --- Adrian escribió: > Hi > all, > > just had a slight hitch upgrading form 4.5 > release. > > I use a 3Com U.S. > > Robotics ISDN Pro TA, rev 1.00/2.19 external and > it > > will not work with 4.7, > > 4.8, 5.0-stable or 5-0-current, does anyone know > of > > any patches or new > > modules available as i've searched hi and low too > no > > avail. > > > > Cheers in advance :) > > > > \\ ___ // > > \\ ¬ ¬ // > > ( @ @ ) > > +-------------oOOo-(_)-oOOo-------------+ > > | | > > | Adrian@nu-earth.net | > > | | > > +----------------------Oooo-------------+ > > oooO ( ) > > ( ) ) / > > \ ( (_/ > > \_) > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > > freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org mailing list > > > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-hardware > > To unsubscribe, send any mail to > "freebsd-hardware-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > > Hello Adrian > > I had this device with 4.5 and 4.6 whithout any > problem and should work for 4.7 and 5 are you sure > you > made your homework configurating it well in > ppp.conf? > > Good luck. > > -edu- > > _________________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Información de Estados Unidos y América Latina, en > Yahoo! The problem that is left now is the probe function: without my patch, this mouse is recognized as a "4D+ Mouse", which is not compatible with the Typhoon mouse, but returns same device ID. I wrote a probe function, enable_typhoon(), which does pretty much the same thing that enable_4dplus() does. Obviously, with this procedure, using 4D+ mice will not work (I did not try because I don't have one, but I think so). My question now is: does anybody know a method to distinguish these two devices? --- /sys/i386/include/mouse.h.orig Mon Apr 28 14:49:20 2003 +++ /sys/i386/include/mouse.h Mon Apr 28 14:52:58 2003 @@ -119,6 +119,7 @@ #define MOUSE_MODEL_EXPLORER 10 #define MOUSE_MODEL_4D 11 #define MOUSE_MODEL_4DPLUS 12 +#define MOUSE_MODEL_TYPHOON 13 typedef struct mousemode { int protocol; /* MOUSE_PROTO_XXX */ @@ -301,6 +302,9 @@ #define MOUSE_4DPLUS_PACKETSIZE 3 #define MOUSE_4DPLUS_ZNEG 0x04 /* sign bit */ #define MOUSE_4DPLUS_BUTTON4DOWN 0x08 + +/* Typhoon Optical Mouse (PS/2) data packet */ +#define MOUSE_TYPHOON_PACKETSIZE 6 /* sysmouse extended data packet */ /* --- /sys/isa/psm.c.orig Mon Apr 28 14:48:16 2003 +++ /sys/isa/psm.c Mon Apr 28 18:43:01 2003 @@ -275,6 +275,7 @@ static probefunc_t enable_msexplorer; static probefunc_t enable_msintelli; static probefunc_t enable_4dmouse; +static probefunc_t enable_typhoon; static probefunc_t enable_4dplus; static probefunc_t enable_mmanplus; static probefunc_t enable_versapad; @@ -298,6 +299,8 @@ 0x08, MOUSE_PS2_PACKETSIZE, enable_mmanplus, }, { MOUSE_MODEL_EXPLORER, /* Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer */ 0x08, MOUSE_PS2INTELLI_PACKETSIZE, enable_msexplorer, }, + { MOUSE_MODEL_TYPHOON, /* Typhoon Optical Mouse */ + 0x08, MOUSE_TYPHOON_PACKETSIZE, enable_typhoon, }, { MOUSE_MODEL_4D, /* A4 Tech 4D Mouse */ 0x08, MOUSE_4D_PACKETSIZE, enable_4dmouse, }, { MOUSE_MODEL_4DPLUS, /* A4 Tech 4D+ Mouse */ @@ -578,6 +581,7 @@ { MOUSE_MODEL_VERSAPAD, "VersaPad" }, { MOUSE_MODEL_EXPLORER, "IntelliMouse Explorer" }, { MOUSE_MODEL_4D, "4D Mouse" }, + { MOUSE_MODEL_TYPHOON, "Typhoon Optical Mouse" }, { MOUSE_MODEL_4DPLUS, "4D+ Mouse" }, { MOUSE_MODEL_GENERIC, "Generic PS/2 mouse" }, { MOUSE_MODEL_UNKNOWN, NULL }, @@ -2288,6 +2292,28 @@ } break; + case MOUSE_MODEL_TYPHOON: + /* + * the packet size of the Typhoon Optical Mouse is 6 bytes + * + * packet format *seems* to be as follows + * + * byte 1 - byte 3: PS/2 style, see psm(4) + * byte 4 == byte 1 + * byte 5: z axis movement, either 0x01 or 0xff + * byte 6: 0 + */ + switch(sc->ipacket[4]) + { + case 0x01: + z = 1; + break; + case 0xff: + z = -1; + break; + } + break; + case MOUSE_MODEL_4DPLUS: if ((x < 16 - 256) && (y < 16 - 256)) { /* @@ -2741,6 +2767,31 @@ sc->hw.hwid = id; sc->hw.buttons = 3; /* XXX some 4D mice have 4? */ + + return TRUE; +} + +/* Typhoon Optical Mouse */ +static int +enable_typhoon(struct psm_softc *sc) +{ + KBDC kbdc = sc->kbdc; + int id; + + static unsigned char rate[] = { 200, 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 }; + int i; + + for (i = 0; i < sizeof(rate)/sizeof(rate[0]); ++i) { + if (set_mouse_sampling_rate(kbdc, rate[i]) != rate[i]) + return FALSE; + } + + id = get_aux_id(kbdc); + if (id != PSM_4DPLUS_ID) /* XXX */ + return FALSE; + + sc->hw.hwid = id; + sc->hw.buttons = 3; return TRUE; } -- Yours, Dominik From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 28 14:32:44 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 00AA837B401; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 14:32:44 -0700 (PDT) Received: from relay.cigital.com (relay.cigital.com [64.80.176.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2234343FB1; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 14:32:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ykorff@cigital.com) Received: by relay.cigital.com (Postfix, from userid 103) id 48306BBAD; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 17:32:42 -0400 (EDT) Received: from va-mail.cigital.com (va-mail.cigital.com [10.1.20.12]) by relay.cigital.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id A40E5BA46; Mon, 28 Apr 2003 17:32:21 -0400 (EDT) Received: from va-mail.cigital.com ([10.1.20.12]) by va-mail.cigital.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.5329); Mon, 28 Apr 2003 17:32:21 -0400 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 Content-Class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Importance: normal Priority: normal Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 17:32:21 -0400 Message-ID: <9B05A21842F77F41ABFB3153FC93201D04884F@va-mail.cigital.com> X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: Load Balancing on Dell 1655MC thread-index: AcMNzaaodNoGNQYwTqayH3i9WurN4w== From: "Yanek Korff" To: , X-OriginalArrivalTime: 28 Apr 2003 21:32:21.0674 (UTC) FILETIME=[A6F078A0:01C30DCD] X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-47.4 required=5.0 tests=AWL,SPAM_PHRASE_05_08 version=2.41 X-Spam-Level: Subject: Load Balancing on Dell 1655MC X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 21:32:44 -0000 First of all, let me apologize for the cross-post. I have it set up as a RAID-10. One of disks is labeled "incomplete". I deleted that disk to make it available and then tried to rebuild the array. It is not clear to me whether the array should be rebuilt in the BIOS or after the OS loads. One point in the manual says the array rebuild is started in the BIOS and proceeds after the OS loads. That specific reference was to RAID-5. Does anyone know if that is the case? If so, can this happen with FreeBSD (-current by the way)? I initially thought a rebuild would be done with the BIOS but I am not so sure now. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? There was some mail on -stable around the beginning of April saying that a change in -stable had broken the 3dmd binary. There was a binary patch posted that's supposed to correct the problem. If that's not the problem you might want to check and see if 1080 is the actual port that 3dmd is using; I vaguely recall that the port changes it from the default to 8080. If you've run into the problem of the broken 3dmd binary you might drop a note to 3Ware's tech support. Maybe if enough folks ask them about it they'll work on releasing an updated binary. I have found that if an existing drive hits a bad sector, you can=20 1) take the bad drive offline through 3dm 2) add back the bad drive through 3dm 3) select all the drives in the array and click on rebuild through 3dm If you however power down the machine, pull the bad drive and put in a = new one, you need to reconfig the array in the BIOS first. i.e. add the independent drive to the array and hit rebuild. FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE #0: Thu Jan 16 22:16:53 GMT 2003 Since I upgraded to 5.0 my UPS has lost the ability to communicate with the server reliably (APC smartUPS 700). The UPS software starts up OK, but then I get "Warning serial port communications with UPS lost." messages. I've also got this in my dmesg: sio0: configured irq 4 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio0: port may not be enabled sio0 port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 on acpi0 sio0: type 16550A sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1 port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 on acpi0 sio1: type 16550A Trying to figure out whats going on I've tried a few things. I've attached a modem to the serial ports, and I can communicate with them (using Kermit), and I've also brought in a null modem cable and can get communications across the serial cable (again using Kermit) to another box. However I've just tried to set up a getty on ttyd0 and ttyd1 and done kill -HUP 1, but the getty is not appearing for ttyd0 or 1. I'm wondering if the getty not appearing is related to my UPS problem, and what I can do to debug this. Shame truss is broke. The ATA controler (SiS) is not properly recognised when pluged=20 on HD (CD is ok). This prevent the box from booting, it hangs here : ad0: READ command timeout tag=3D0 serv=3D0 - resetting ata0: resetting devices... I must use this in order to boot : set hw.ata.ata_dma=3D"0" set hw.ata.atapi_dma=3D"0" boot (or the same into /boot/loader.conf) and that put the ATA controler in ATA33 mode. According to this ML=20 archives and Google, this problem seems known for long, and both=20 FreeBSD 4.5, 4.7 and 4.8 Release shows the same behaviour. Is there any patch out-there ? any trick I could use to put these ATA=20 into 100 or 133 mode ? I'm really surprised that this issue is not addressed for long... You need 5.0-RELEASE if you want to have support for a cardbus card. Ken On Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 12:10 AM, Remington L. wrote: > I just bought a Dell 10/100 LAN+56K Modem Cardbus PCMCIA card. Can you enable ACPI? Alternatively, you need to try setting one or more of the following: hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range=1 hw.cbb.start_memory=0xe0000000 # pick addresses until you # find a range that works. I have cardbus enabled in the kernel. Here are the settings that I have hw.pccard.debug: 0 hw.pccard.cis_debug: 0 hw.cbb.start_memory: 2281701376 hw.cbb.start_16_io: 256 hw.cbb.start_32_io: 4096 hw.cbb.debug: 0 and I do have acpi enabled in the kernel (as apm I think, sysctl shows all of the functions of acpi to be working properly). Can you make any suggested changes to this setup to hopefully get pc cards working. Thanks for the help. Mike M.
