According to tomshardware, it uses the Highpoint 374 chip, which is supported, but usually mentioned with a UDMA133 card, so I am not sure, wether this does make a difference. I'd rather not use the highpoint provided, binary only driver. Are there any other 4-port s-ata cards that are known to run with FreeBSD (preferrably 4.8+, not 5) that are to recommend ? I do not need raid at all, just four sata connectors on a single card. When we opened the 1U box, the client found the correct cables but reversed. We reversed the cables (with great difficulty because the middle connector in the cable fell exactly at a small pass-thru hole in bulkhead panel, suggesting probably why the integrator didn't install the cables correctly) and the hardware reported "133" immediately. Thanks for helping, Gorm. Stick the upper end up of your body up your lower end, but first ask someone which end is which. When our config had the right cable backwards, the Promise on-board setup ROM showed both drives' model numbers and both as UDMA6, so we assumed the cable was correctly installed, FreeBSD installed and ran correctly, etc, etc. It took us while to give up and pull the box out the rack and look inside. One of interesting thing is the performance of the disk subsystem (PERC/3Di on DELL and Smart Array 5i on HPQ). The PERC/3Di using aac driver, while Smart Array 5i using ciss driver. Both system configured using RAID-5. On rawio bencmarking performed, both system shows comparable result with some advantage on Smart Array system. However when postmark benchmark performed, the PERC/3Di wins almost 2.5 times faster than Smart Array. I wonder if any of you also performed some benchmarking on any of those brands mentioned above could share opinions/advise. Or is there a better benchmarking tools to compare those systems ? Inputs/advise are very welcomed. It's recognized by FreeBSD-CURRENT as an "amr" device even though it's got four ATA disk channels on it instead of the documented SCSI drives for the PERC controller. I have 4x WD1200JB ATA 120GB disks on it which have been running fine for a few months as a set of RAID-5 volumes. >From "dmesg": amrd0: on amr0 amrd0: 9999MB (20477952 sectors) RAID 5 (optimal) amrd1: on amr0 amrd1: 111093MB (227518464 sectors) RAID 5 (optimal) amrd2: on amr0 amrd2: 111093MB (227518464 sectors) RAID 5 (optimal) amrd3: on amr0 amrd3: 111099MB (227530752 sectors) RAID 5 (optimal) An hour ago, it started beeping at me. I suspect this is the CERC card warning me that one of the disk drives has failed and that I'd better do something about it. :-( Is there a way to diagnose it from a live system, to query which of the four ATA drives it thinks is dead, so I can replace it? (Seems to me that a WD1200JB drive should last a lot longer than a few months it's been running, in a properly ventilated DELL box; any ideas?) Anyone have experience with this CERC controller and replacing a drive? My biggest fear is that I haven't tested the RAID rebuild and that even when I do replace the failed (?) drive it won't do the automatic rebuild and save my data. Other suggestions? Thanks. Can anybody help me to solve this - I've got RBEM10/100+56k PCMCIA card and I can't get it work. Because my cardBus - it's 32-bit, and driver is 16-bit. I've got a message at startup pcmcia: 32-bit cardbus is unsupported and as result if_xe.ko is unloaded with strange fhdjklsah - if I try to kldload if_xe it says that it can't load module because it is already loaded, but kldstat says that there is NO if_xe loaded. FreeBSD is RELEASE-4.7 with custom kernel with device xe included. I've got little knowledge in PC-internals and haven't got experience in system programming so if anybody will guide me I should try to solve this by myself. And I don't want to change my laptop or pc-card:) Thanks. Unfortunately FreeBSD doesn't support SATA very much in general. You must have FreeBSD v5.1 beta or newer installed and the only controllers it seems to support are Promise SATA150 TX2/TX4 Serial ATA/150. I have SIIG's SATA card it doesn't seem to be supported at all. The onboard audio works perfectly fine, at least with the majority of boards that use the C-Media 8738 controller. It seems to me that FreeBSD's audio support is broad enough to support most any audio card (integrated or not) out there. You'll need to read the documentation and recompile the kernel since it does not come stock with support for audio. As far as recommended boards go, I'd just make sure to get one that supports the new barton core (or whatever the newest XP chip's core is called). I've used mostly Asus boards since I've gone AMD and their fine, I've been told Gigabyte is good also. If I were you, I'd just do some research and find o ut what the best chipsets are currently as I feel thats more important then a brand name in the long run. I believe raid is supported on some Promise controllers, but I no longer have the hardware to verify that. If you want more definitive answers read the hardware notes, you'll need to know the models/chipsets to find out for sure. You'll find the newest documentation at http://people.freebsd.org/~bmah/relnotes/#current. I/O requirements are as follows: 1. Sound card supported by fbsd 2. About 5 digital status inputs 3. a serial output 4. wired lan connectivity 5. support for wireless. Looked at embedded586.com and they have some nice gear. From what I've found, it looks like PC/104 is just a goofy pinout for ISA bus gear, so the the theory is, sound, lan, serial, etc should be supported. Any input on this angle from the community? Finally, does anyone know of PC/104 digital and/or analog I/O cards which have fbsd support? Alternatively, since you can get PC/104 to ISA "convertors", any ISA analog and/or digial I/O cards with fbsd supports. Thanks for the input. Eric __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
