This box does use SATA as we needed to see how well things would work. The Intel Server Board (fairly inexpensive when compared to to Intel dual xeon boards for what I need it for) has two SATA controllers on-board. One from Intel and one from Promise Technology. The RAID (RAID-0+1) works exceedingly well. In fact, while writing this, I have a USB SanDisk card reader for my digital camera plugged in to edit with xv, a few pics. FreeBSD 5.1 with the iNET900 absolutely rocks! Mine has been back for replacement once (something with the power supply, I think). They gave us so much hassle about it, it is too much trouble to send the replacement back for the bad pixel column the replacement unit developed since arrival. We've had good luck with ViewSonic in smaller formats. Haven't tried their larger models (like you want). Bud Dodson -- M. L. I own a ViewSonic VX900, http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcd_vx900.htm which I purchased to use with 4 computers through a KVM switch (the four computers are 2 SGI machines, a FreeBSD box, and a windows laptop.) So far, since April or so, I haven't had a single problem with it, and I haven't even found a dead pixel. It handles the sync-on-green that the O2 and Octane want, and handles the Matrox G200 (old card) well under FreeBSD. FYI Brian Brian D. A general note: we've had trouble with LCDs on KVMs. I think Suns in particular tend to pick non-LCD-friendly resolutions (sync rates) when they can't detect the monitor directly at boot. With CRTs, they seem to pick a resolution that the CRT can handle (1152x900@75Hz?), but I have to switch the KVM to booting systems long enough for them to probe the monitor or the LCD doesn't work. I have similar trouble with a Windows PC switching to an unsupported signal format, presumably when the screensaver kicks in. I can't find any docs anywhere on this extra "feature" but the card does not detect under either a standard kernel or one with the sk driver compiled in... This is a 64 bit card in a dell poweredge 600SC. By the way, according to LINT, support for the 9821 is provided by the bge driver. According to "man sk" it's provided by the sk driver. Could this be part of the problem? (Both device lines are included in my kernel). No dice. When I use ucom, the device_probe_and_attach fails. The exact message is: ucom0: Palm, Inc. Palm Handheld, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 2 ucom0: init failed, STALLED device_probe_and_attach: ucom0 attach returned 6 Coldsync doesn't work with ugen0 either. I turned on USB debugging and it seems like the failure point is when the FreeBSD USB driver tries to do a bulk read at the second end point on ugen0. I've been digging into the USB code, but am not sure how to fix it. Any suggestions? I'll be more than happy to help with any testing and debugging, but need a pointer in the right direction. I'm shopping around for a new development server. Probably will run a pair of 533 2.4Ghz Xeons and 512 megs of ram. An Adaptec 2200S will eventually make its way into the box when the RAID gets upgraded, with a 2100S running it to start. Only two disks will likely be housed in the system. I'm currently looking at the Seagate Cheetah's, 36 gigs or so, 15k. I'm looking at 2u or so systems, since the RAID is and will be housed in its own case. I'm not space crunched so I don't see any reason to cram a pair of Xeons into a 1u case! :) Currently I'm looking at the X5DLR-8G2 powered Supermicro 6023L-8R or 6023P-8R. (the 6023P requires low profile cards only.) I'm also considering the SE7501WV2 powered Intel SR2300. I'll be taking advantage of the redundant power supplies in either of these chassis. Both of these chassis use SCA2 hotswap cages for the disks. Does anyone have any experience using either of these systems? Anything to watch out for (SMP, the Broadcom NICs on the supermicro, etc)? Any known issues? For the time being the system will run 4.8-RELEASE for some time. No timeline is in place for migration to 5.x, though any current issues with 5.x and these systems would be good to know. :) Alternative system/chassis/board suggestions are also welcome. You may also want to get SCA backplane with SAF-TE chip for true hot-swap capability. Not sure about Adaptec RAID, the drivers for them haven't been so good from what I've read in the past, but if that is no longer the case, the ability to add RAID via Adapatec zero channel card is a very nice feature. Meanwhile, I use Mylex with great results. Seagate SCSI drives are topnotch. -Simon On Tue, 29 Jul 2003 12:37:16 -0700 (PDT), David Raistrick wrote: > >Hey folks. > >I'm shopping around for a new development server. > >Probably will run a pair of 533 2.4Ghz Xeons and 512 megs of ram. It doesnt look like they have a 533 2u system that uses the 400RC chassis. The 6023P-8R uses the X5DP8-G2 board with Intel NICs. I may end up combining the SC822R-400RC chassis with the X5DLR-8G2 board, instead of using the combo system, if I end up needing to use non-low profile cards. --- david raistrick drais@atlasta.net http://www.expita.com/nomime.html From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 29 19:52:33 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 13C6937B401 for ; Tue, 29 Jul 2003 19:52:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp801.mail.sc5.yahoo.com (smtp801.mail.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.168.180]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 5FC1143FAF for ; Tue, 29 Jul 2003 19:52:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jason@dictos.com) Received: from adsl-67-125-129-108.dsl.frsn02.pacbell.net (jasondic@sbcglobal.net@67.125.129.108 with plain) by smtp-sbc-v1.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com with SMTP; 30 Jul 2003 02:52:32 -0000 To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 19:50:20 -0700 User-Agent: KMail/1.5 References: In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200307291950.20500.> From: jason@dictos.com Subject: Re: dual Xeon motherboard of choice? Let it go a good 8-12 hours and do a full test (all 11) a couple times. At the end it will tell you if there are any issues with your memory. The program fits on a floppy and progressively tests every byte of memory with every bit pattern. If there are problems, from a failed bank to one or two bits that are being asked to run too fast, it will find them. If the tests complete successfully, I'd then move on to testing your disks and from there on to other devices. I would approach it this way: - Wiggle all cables, reseat all components (you never know...) - Check CPU cooling (I had CPU-related sig 11 crashes once myself) - If CPU cooling is OK, try underclocking the CPU; if it is marginal this may make it stable, and then you will know. - Swap in a different power supply (a flaky PS can do all KIND of weird things.) - Swap in different RAM (or test RAM with memtest86) If you can rule out CPU, RAM, PS... post a followup. Good luck! When booting the GENERIC kernel the Highpoint chip does not get detected and obviously the connected disks will not be detected too. pciconf -lv shows up a "Highpoint" chip with chipid 0x00091103. Browsing the freebsd mailing lists shows no results (the web-search was disabled the last days and geocrawler archive starts at Mar 2003). So we jumped to /usr/src/sys/dev/ata and patched the files ata-pci.c ata-dma.c and ata-raid.c so that the kernel treats the HPT372N like the HPT372 chip (in other words: we extended all the switch statements there). After installing the kernel the chip shows up as an HTP372N at boottime and all four disks connected show up as well (ad4..ad7). For all four disks now we zeroed the first 1000 blocks, called fdisk -I adX disklabel -Brw adX auto disklabel -e adX # make one big partititon d=c newfs /dev/ad0d and everything works fine so far. Questions: a. What further tests can we do? b. Are there any chip-level tests we can do? c. Is there any info we can give to kernel developer (esp. Soeren Schmidt)? I can post the diffs, if somebody tells me what diff-format is preferred here (diff -???) We are not sure if the above changes are "enough" to enable full support for HPT372N, because the linux people had a similar problem: After googling around in the groups, I found a linux related thread where Henning Schroeder did a similar thing to the linux kernel (look for "hpt372n alan cox", the first hit with three msgs). The last messages mentions "different pci timing thresholds". And looking further in google web "hpt372n freebsd" shows http://features.linuxtoday.com/developer/2003042502126NWKNDV for example, where they mention some "clock switching" again. Hmmmmm? Any ideas how to proceed? with best regards, Alexander From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 1 16:28:32 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A875E37B401 for ; Fri, 1 Aug 2003 16:28:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from gate.volant.org (gate.volant.org [207.111.218.246]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40B4343F93 for ; Fri, 1 Aug 2003 16:28:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from patl+freebsd@volant.org) Received: from 64-144-229-193.client.dsl.net ([64.144.229.193] helo=[192.168.0.13]) by gate.volant.org with asmtp (TLSv1:DES-CBC3-SHA:168) (Exim 3.33 #1) id 19ijK3-0002el-00 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Fri, 01 Aug 2003 16:28:31 -0700 Date: Fri, 01 Aug 2003 16:28:13 -0700 From: Pat Lashley To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Message-ID: <3015080000.1059780493@mccaffrey.phoenix.volant.org> X-Mailer: Mulberry/3.1.0b4 (Linux/x86) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Driver for SA1100 USB NIC ? I was just hacking up a driver for this. It's for 5.1 and works with my iPAQ 5400 and 3600. http://users.erols.com/eaja/fbsd/if_saue.tar.gz 5400 requires some linux kernel changes: http://users.erols.com/eaja/fbsd/pxa-usb_ep0.c.diff It could probably be ported to 4.x pretty easily. Hope this helps.
