OK, I got a little further today. I'm typing all of this by hand
since there is no access to the keyboard on the system once I get
it to boot.

The kernel loads and then the sysinstall program runs. At that
point the keyboard and mouse no longer work.
One interesting thing I saw, it appears the load command is
"smart enough" to append a ".gz" to the end of a filename
passed to it on it's commandline.
