I have the entire /etc directory tar'd and am wondering when I get to the new server what I need as far as to maintain the user info files. I am thinking passwd, master.passwd, and group. After I move these files I run pwd_mkdb - p /etc/master.passwd. Is there any need to copy spwd.db and pwd.db? If I understand it correctly these will be created/updated when I run pwd_mkdb. Thats assuming you want to copy > everything. Having moved, and participated in moving, a number of servers, we've always used dump/restore to move files over. I tried rsync once, and it works just fine *so long as you don't need to maintain the last access time* on the files you're rsync'ing. Depending on the partitions that need to be moved over (i.e. if /var/mail is mounted on its own), it can be easier to pop the old drive into the new system, and do a 'dump -0af - | restore -rf -' in the directory you want to restore into. In the case where you just want *some* of the files moved over, however, chances are rsync might be your best option. Although a 'restore -if ' would work just as well. Note that CVS would work as well, I just haven't ever used it for this. Getting back to the original question, yes. If *all* you want to maintain is userid<->username, groupid<->groupname mappings (and user passwords), then that should be all you need. But you'll also need home directories, and limits you've put in place, and any other custom configuration you'll want to copy over. - Damian From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 30 20:21:43 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7938116A4CE for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 20:21:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from mordrede.visionsix.com (mordrede.visionsix.com [65.202.119.3]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A5B043F75 for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 20:21:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from lists@visionsix.com) Received: from vsis169 (unverified [65.202.119.169]) by mordrede.visionsix.com for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 22:21:41 -0600 Message-ID: <003801c3b7c2$9eb0a120$df0a0a0a@visionsix.net> From: "Lewis Watson" To: References: <000801c3b7bd$2eb54740$df0a0a0a@visionsix.net> <3FCABADF.5090001@vonostingroup.com> <20031201040029.GB51594@sentex.net> Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 22:21:40 -0600 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 Subject: Re: Moving to New Server.. I currently use Amanda for backing up several directories, including /home, custom scripts, configs, etc etc :-) I did try rsync ( I just never got comfortable with it I guess) for a short while myself but found that I like my tape backups. Also, I like the idea of just moving the drive(s) over, this is really sounds good for /home especially. That would make it easy to bring a new server online and with the tape we also have a backup to go with it in the event of a failure that knocks out the hard drives (Using raid 1) Thanks for the help with the question too, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something :-) Lewis From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 30 21:44:18 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1FE0E16A4CE for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 21:44:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from ns2.wananchi.com (ns2.wananchi.com [62.8.64.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5D06643F93 for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 21:44:16 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wash@wananchi.com) Received: from wash by ns2.wananchi.com with local (Exim 4.24 #1 (FreeBSD 4.9)) id 1AQgqu-000LI7-Uu by authid ; Mon, 01 Dec 2003 08:44:08 +0300 Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 08:44:08 +0300 From: Odhiambo Washington To: Simon Message-ID: <20031201054408.GD15705@ns2.wananchi.com> Mail-Followup-To: Odhiambo Washington , Simon , FBSD-ISP References: <20031129121911.GA41923@ns2.wananchi.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature"; micalg=sha1; boundary="ncSAzJYg3Aa9+CRW" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: X-Disclaimer: Any views expressed in this message, where not explicitly attributed otherwise, are mine alone!. Because you're doing a bitwise copy of the drive, you can potentially wind up throwing things off. Not to mention that it does a bit-to-bit copy of *every* bit, whereas dump|restore only nabs the files that actually exist. > Thanks for the help with the question too, I wanted to make sure that I > wasn't missing something :-) Looks like you've got everything you need, to keep usernames and groups around. Sometimes PHP doesn't figure out the right path for the sendmail program. So your first check is to make sure PHP is using sendmail correctly for your particular box. The builting phpinfo() command puts out a nice summary of your php build including all the build options. You need to make sure PHP was compiled with the correct path to sendmail. A php check web page: ----- cut here ----- ----- cut here ----- In the CORE PHP configuration section look for the setting 'sendmail_path'. Ours is set to '/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i' You can test to see if PHP can send email using the code I included bellow. Given that PHP can send email phpmail should start working. I am not sure how phpmail handles the mail but we have found email works a LOT better if some extra header information is included. Here is the PHP code you can use to check to see if PHP is able send messages from a functioning email form on a BSD box: email.php: ----- cut here ----- "; if ( $_POST[ "cc_me" ] == "on" ) { $_ccEmailAddress = $_from; } $message = "\n\nName: " . $name . "\n"; $message .= "Email: " . $_from . "\n"; $message .= "Phone Number: " . $phone . "\n"; $message .= "\nMessage: " . $_comments . "\n\n"; $_headers = ""; //$_headers .= "MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n"; //$_headers .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n"; $_headers .= "From: $_from\r\n"; //$_headers .= "To: ".$_toEmailAddress."\r\n"; if (! empty($_bccEmailAddress) ) { $_headers .= "BCC: ".$_bccEmailAddress."\r\n"; } if (! empty($_ccEmailAddress) ) { $_headers .= "CC: ".$_ccEmailAddress."\r\n"; } $_headers .= "Reply-To: $_from\r\n"; $_headers .= "X-Priority: 1\r\n"; $_headers .= "X-MSMail-Priority: High\r\n"; $_headers .= "X-Mailer: Hero Network Email System"; $mailresponse = mail("$_toEmailAddress", "$_subject", "$message", $_headers ); ?> ----- cut here ----- email_form.html ----- cut here ----- Untitled

Unfortunately, the version in ports doesn't seem to work with 4.9: I get an error claiming that jailer couldn't determine whether it was in a jail ("Could not determine jailed status."). The jailer homepage says "When upgrading from FreeBSD 4.x to 4.8 or 4.x to 5.x you'll need to rebuild jailer and reinstall it in your jails.", maybe this is the problem? Hello Friends, Let me take Adam on this ;) And you by extension. I tried openwebmail today. It was very difficult to get running under a virtualhost in apache. Perhaps I missed some point but even as we speak, I still believe something is not right with the setup. http://owm.wananchi.com. The login window looks very nice, but I haven't managed to get it to authenticate a user at all. Why? Because I am still not sure. I think I will need a whole night (w/o interferences) to do that. Those who have used it may help me though. I am moving towards a complete virtual setup where all users are in a MySQL database. What I would like to know (which I so far doubt) is whether openwebmail can authenticate using encrypted passwords (md5 - same as those we have in master.passwd) from the DB. My setup stores mail in /var/spool/virtual/$domain/$user/Maildir/. Is openwebmail ever capable of reading the mail from this path, leave alone from /home/$user/Maildir ($HOME/Maildir)?? Can it accept virtual user logins (user@domains)?? Or perhaps I can use PAM, with pam_mysql?? I'd very much appreciate any pointers. The webforum for OWM is not the best that I have ever seen. I like Mailman-like forums, not one like the owm one;) -Wash http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html -- +=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D+ |\ _,,,---,,_ | Odhiambo Washington Zzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ | Wananchi Online Ltd. www.wananchi.com |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-'| Tel: +254 20 313985-9 +254 20 313922 '---''(_/--' `-'\_) | GSM: +254 722 743223 +254 733 744121 +=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D+ The USA is so enormous, and so numerous are its schools, colleges and religious seminaries, many devoted to special religious beliefs ranging =66rom the unorthodox to the dotty, that we can hardly wonder at its yielding a more bounteous harvest of gobbledygook than the rest of the world put together. -- Sir Peter Medawar --VdOwlNaOFKGAtAAV Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-signature Content-Disposition: attachment; It does support crypted passwords in mysql. There is a section in the manual on setting up virtual domains/users. Our setup is authentication through NIS, virtual users in virtusertable (just Sendmail here). We have our users login as user@domain, and OWM actually expands the login name from virtusertable. It gives the user a list of their possible From addresses, based on the virtuser entries for that login (so if they have multiple addresses with the same login, they can choose which one their e-mail comes from.) As far as reading from the /var/spool/virtual/DOMAIN/USER/Maildir - I'm not sure whether OWM supports Maildir format, you'll have to check the docs. There is a mailspooldir configuration option. There is also an option to use hashed spool directories (/var/mail/a/d/adamm) which you can probably use as a starting point for making it use your version of the mail spool. This is in openwebmail.pl On Fri, 2003-12-05 at 08:44, Odhiambo Washington wrote: > * Adam Maloney [20031103 22:16]: wrote: > > openwebmail (openwebmail.org) - it's the swiss-army of webmails, and is > > a port.
