Is there a reason why ant has everything installed in ${PREFIX}/apache-ant-1.5.3 ? First the version number is quite useless as there is only one port of ant. Furthermore, each time people update the port, they also have to change their bookmarks for HTML docs in their browser. Second, it is not hier(7) compliant nor "Java ports" compliant. The second point is not important to my eyes as there's no rule anyway. But I'm too lazy to change my bookmarks everytime I update the port ;) I could provide a patch if you want... The problem is that the great FreeBSD Java 1.4.1 patchset 3 does have "1.4.1-p3" instead of "1.4.1_O2" in the java.version system property. The patch is easy: just patch the file ${IDEA_HOME}/lib/idea.jar: Inside there is the file com/intellij/idea/Main.class where the string "1.4.1_O2" has to be replaced by "1.4.1-p3". I did it by unpacking idea.jar, patching the Main.class file (with Emacs hexl-mode) and building a new jar, but since the jar is uncompressed, it should be possible to patch it with any hex-editor (Emacs is not too fast in hexl-mode for long files). IDEA works great, but debugging seems to be a problem. btw: does debugging work with other IDEs (Eclipse?) or is it a problem of the jdk14 port? cheers, Felix From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 14 11:01:33 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5265137B404 for ; Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:01:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E1B6C43F3F for ; Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:01:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h3EI1UUp047082 for ; Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:01:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h3EI1UAw047068 for java@freebsd.org; Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:01:30 -0700 (PDT) Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:01:30 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <200304141801.h3EI1UAw047068@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: java@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2003 18:01:33 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. The applets plot maps of the US (well, the world, but the US by default) with various weather data superimposed. Under p7 this works great, but under p8 maps and data all seems to be plotted in the upper left corner of the map area. For example http://adds.aviationweather.gov/java/ They've clearly had jdk problems in the past, related to IE, described on this page: http://adds.aviationweather.gov/info/ie_patch.php . All this is under mozilla. I can provide plugin131.trace files if you want, but you can generate your own by opening the site, so I thought I'd save the bw. I am one of the ones that = got Compaq's Java2 for Linux running under FreeBSD-Alpha. First, some caveats. It is slow. Compaq's JIT will not work under FreeBSD, and it seemed=20 to me that the effort needed to make it run was not worth it (see below) Installation is painfull, you'r most likely going to need an Alpha=20 running linux for a while. I'm rather dissapointed on the quality of Compaq's J2SDK for Linux,=20 the memory footprint is LARGE!. Running under native Linux, i was unable = to run the VolanoMark Benchmark with the native JIT, even with 1 GB of=20 ram (and it ran painfully slow with the classic VM). This makes it rather useless for runnig server side Java Apps. My 486/66 was about an order of magnitude faster than the native Compaq JVM on my 500Mhz Alpha Miata. I understand that with a decent JIT the same box could run as fast as a PIII-200. :) > Installation is painfull, you'r most likely going to need an Alpha > running linux for a while. Our application which is *way* bigger than the Volano stuff didn't use nearly that much memory. However, it was so slow that maybe it was because I never really pushed it hard, and did simple verification tests with it. > 2. How to proceed (From my own archives) > 2.1 You'll probably want to get a newer lesstif ... > 2.2 I can send you prebuilt libraries to spare yourself step D) if > you lack a Linux-Alpha machine (or just for convenience) I had everything running on the Alpha that was originally provided to the FreeBSD/Java team for doing the Java port, but due to lack of interest the box sat completely idle for years and has since been put out to pasture. BTW, thanks got to Andrew Gallatin who helped make the Linuxulator changes so that it would work, albeit slowly. Contacts at DEC/Compaq were met with interest, but there was little techical help forthcoming. IMO, the Alpha platform is dead as far as Java is concerned. It's a great architecture, but it's really not worth throwing resources toward something that will never outperform a PC that you can buy for $300 new. I understand that Sun has given the go ahead to FreeBSD last year to make a native JDK available. So now we have a port called "java/jdk13". (and other versions, but that is the one of interest to me right now). But I have a couple of questions: * why does the installer require manual agreement to the license at http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsddom/java/jdk13.html? * and then again to fetch the actual JDK from Sun's site? What was the effect of the agreement if in fact nothing at all is downloaded from FreeBSD but it is all coming from Sun anyway? See http://daily.daemonnews.org/view_story.php3?story_id=2602 And an even more important question. Why does the installation of "java/jdk13" depend on the port "linux-sun-jdk-1.3.1.07_1"? I can't find any answers in the web pages and in fact the pages seem quite contradictory. For example says that no dependencies are needed to install the JDK. But when compiling the JDK I get this: ===> Applying FreeBSD patches for jdk-1.3.1p8_1 ===> jdk-1.3.1p8_1 depends on executable: gm4 - found ===> jdk-1.3.1p8_1 depends on executable: zip - found ===> jdk-1.3.1p8_1 depends on file: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXm.so - found ===> jdk-1.3.1p8_1 depends on file: /usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.3.1/bin/javac - not found This is all on FreeBSD 4.7. I don't think that I have enough skills to even write something alternative to Sun's i386 CPU dependent part implementation without complete docs (which are unavailable) and considerable amount of time, not to mention other arches. Sun implemented HotSpot on i486, sparc and ia64. So, it's possible someday to see native jdk ports on sparc64 and ia64, but it will very depend on availbility of time and hardware here :-( On Mon, Apr 14, 2003 at 09:34:45PM -0700, Tom Samplonius wrote: > > On Mon, 14 Apr 2003 k.j.koster@telecom.tno.nl wrote: > > ... > > > > beta out for 1.4.1 for quite some time. Most notable difference between SCSL and SPS is up-do-date sources. I.e. sources released under SCSL usually are releasing about 2 months after acutal release and are just snapshot of tree. And SPS sources access (as I understand) provide access to today's sources with all bugfixes, but without possibility to make source release (i.e. it's not possible to release patchsets or anyting like that). After switch to SPS we'll have binary releases only. In the past, the BSD patches were not submitted back because 99.9% are BSD specific, and Sun is not interested in being the maintainer of the BSD changes. For the other .1% of the patches, they are almost always gleaned from Linux sources or also apply there, so they are usually also fixed in later releases from Sun. FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE-p7, jdk-1.3.1p8_1 built with native threads, Mozilla 1.3. I do, however, have problems with the NIKU time reporting applet that I have to use at work. With the FreeBSD browser and JDK I get error messages about not being able to get some data source. It works with Linux Mozilla (1.2.1) and linux-sun-jdk-1.3.1.06_1, and I remember it used to work with FreeBSD JDK 1.3.1p7. This is a vague problem, I cannot be sure if the applet is still the same as it was when I was using FreeBSD 1.3.1p7, and I *think* I was using the classic VM for the plugin then. Other than this I haven't noticed any irregularity for patchset 8. -- Regards, Georg.
