I am pretty new to FreeBSD but thought it might be a nice idea to migrate from a Linux server to a FreeBSD one. My question is regarding software RAID-1 for this FreeBSD box. I have two IDE equally sized hard drives and I installed FreeBSD 4.8 on the other one. Now the question is: can I make a RAID-1 array of these two disks while FreeBSD is installed on the other one (using vinum or other...)? Or how do I get RAID-1 to work on these two disks? I've read some of the vinum documentation but it is unclear to me if it is possible to set up a RAID-1 on a running disk system - and if my assumptions are correct, that it is impossible, it is unclear to me how to set up this RAID-1? But I'll try -- your question is interesting b/c I'm in the same boat, except w/ CURRENT. As you said, breezing through the handbook will show a lot of detail, but perhaps it does not directly address mirroring a live fs. Aside from the handwaving, you might check http://www.vinumvm.org/. There seems to be a relevant (if a little dated) article: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/vinum/index.html It may be possible to mirror partitions, even if half of it is live. Were this not the case, it's prob possible to boot the install cdrom and play some tricks with dd or dump to sync the disks. Perhaps they could then be mounted, vinum set up, and then booted into. It would be fantastic if the freebsd installer had the ability to run raid 1 right out the chute. Doubtless, there's a number of us w/ legacy servers having two disks but no hardware raid. Good luck. Share your notes (at least to newbies) once you get it working! I'll try repost the question to the freebsd-questions maling list which seems to be the correct list for my question. I hope I'll get an answer that would solve the problem. You are absolutelty correct about the fact that freebsd installer should have a raid tool just like many of the Linux installers. This is a critical issue for me and if I can't get the raid 1 to work with FreeBSD I have to go back to Linux - and an installer that lets me do the software raid :-/ > Regards, > Tom McIntyre Regards, Johan Paul From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 23 02:56:07 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EF3437B401 for ; Mon, 23 Jun 2003 02:56:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: from web42005.mail.yahoo.com (web42005.mail.yahoo.com [66.218.93.173]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 9B90943FDF for ; Mon, 23 Jun 2003 02:56:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from chkrootkit@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20030623095602.48340.qmail@web42005.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [202.81.160.15] by web42005.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Mon, 23 Jun 2003 02:56:02 PDT Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 02:56:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Marlon Corleone To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: error in buildworld X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 09:56:07 -0000 hi i received this error when im about to do a buildworld after upgrading my src and ports collection. im running 4.8-RELEASE, heres the logs of the errors: i hope anyone can explain what and where is the the line that causes the error, thanks all. ===> bin/ln ===> bin/ls cc -O -pipe -DCOLORLS -Wall -Wformat -static -o ls cmp.o ls.o print.o util.o -lm -ltermcap /usr/obj/usr/src/i386/usr/lib/libtermcap.a: could not read symbols: Malformed archive *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src/bin/ls. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src/bin. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src. This question belongs to the freebsd-questions list (this list is for newbie chatting, not for technical questions). Doing a quick check on the web though, it is highly probable that this is a "WinModem". In other words, it was designed by the manufacturer to work only with Windows. You need a special Windows-only driver to get it to work. WinModem's suck. They suck big time. In fact, you don't even want them under Windows, because all the modem work is being rudely offloaded to your poor overworked CPU. 99.9999% of PCI modems with a Rockwell chipset are WinModems. It may be possible to get it to work, but don't count on it. If it is possible, the -questions list might have the answer. But in my opinion, buy a new modem if you can afford it. Make sure it is not a WinModem. This can be hard to determine, so check for modems that say they will work under DOS or Linux. A modem that works under DOS is your best bet, since there are some WinModems with Linux drivers. Your safest bet is an external modem, though they do tend to cost about $20 more than an internal. One problem I am having is the modem. I tried connecting to my ISP with ppp. When I switch to terminal mode, I can't enter any of the commands except the ~ sequences. I am pretty sure this has to do with the fact that my modem isn't being recognized by the OS. (at least I think it's not). According to Windows ME (both OSs are loaded on my machine) the modem, which is a Conexant HCP V90 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem, is located at COM3, its IRQ channel is 11, the I/O is located at 0xDFE0-0xDFE7. I checked the devices.hints file, and sio2 (COM3) was disabled, so I enabled it and changed the IRQ value, and the I/O for sio2. Now when the kernel loads, when it tries to load sio2, I get a message about, IRQ 11 not being recognized and below that a message that says something like port may not be enabled. I didn't write the messages down before I started writing this email, if they are necessary, I get them. well, that's about it, the kernel isn't recognizing the modem, and I am sort of stucks thanks, ian _______________________________________________ freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-newbies-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 24 03:11:07 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C8D7B37B405 for ; Tue, 24 Jun 2003 03:11:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: from etna.obsidian.co.za (etna.obsidian.co.za [196.36.119.67]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FE1D43F3F for ; Tue, 24 Jun 2003 03:11:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jeandre@itvs.co.za) Received: from etna.obsidian.co.za (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by etna.obsidian.co.za (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h5OAAtXS007244; Tue, 24 Jun 2003 12:10:55 +0200 Received: (from uucp@localhost)h5OAAt7w007242; Tue, 24 Jun 2003 12:10:55 +0200 Received: from tarcil (tarcil [172.16.1.14]) by flash.itvs.co.za (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id MAA27244; Tue, 24 Jun 2003 12:29:54 +0200 Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 11:51:08 +0200 (SAST) From: Jeandre du Toit X-X-Sender: jeandre@localhost.localdomain To: Kim Fredenberg In-Reply-To: <3EF4B792.7000706@dc.turkuamk.fi> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII cc: David Lodeiro cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: XFree86 X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 10:11:08 -0000 Thanks alot XFree86 -configure works like the bomb! ;-) Jeandre On Sat, 21 Jun 2003, Kim Fredenberg wrote: > Jeandre du Toit wrote: > > >That option seems to work alot better than the graphical option. I'm a beginner to FreeBSD. After a successful installion, I receive the message "kernel: arplookup 192.168.0.35 hostname do not exist in the local network" This message appears per sixteen minutes. And now I've known that the machine whost ip is 192.168.0.35 as above is really in my lan. But what I don't understand is that: 1. why arplookup send such a msg to me? 2. how can I know the difference between 192.168.0.35 and others?(there are thiry or more machine around me and most of them have a static IP) Thanks. However, I cannot delete my Linux for FreeBSD on my dual boot Pc (Win...ws + Linux) since I do not know the following things, t hat are essential for me to well manage my PC : 1. when installing FreeBSD on a partition on the same disk as Windows, what kind of boot manager should I use. During the install, the boot manager choosing screen suggest to install nothing. But how to boot on BSD ? So I tried to install BSD with Linux and Windows, and use Lilo to boot BSD. Well, it works, but I am not satisfied, since Linux is still necessary to boot. What option should I choose ? How should I partition my disk to have this dual boot. What kind of bootmanager should I use ? Does Windows XP (or 2000) could boot FreeBSD (hum ?) ? 2. On my standalone disk (cf. (*1)), I use the default bootloader of FreeBSD. But I can not delete if from my HD, whereas I can delete lilo by executing fdisk /MBR ? So what is the issue ? Is the BSD boot loader not in the Master Boot Record ? How can i delete it, to delete all FreeBSD from my disk (just in case...) ? 3. Why there is only 2 CD-ROM for the 5.1 whereas there is 4 for the 4.X ? 4. Is Java now well supported (I tried once to install it, but it did not work since I did not found the right version of the JDK to port). I 'd like to install a true J2EE plateform on BSD ! You can use the FreeBSD boot manager -- it's minimalistic (you WinXP partition will show up labelled as '???'), but it generally works. If you want something with a few more options and settings to play with, try Grub, which is in ports. Note that Grub doesn't yet recognise the ufs2 filesystem available in 5.x -- there are some easy workarounds that you can find by searching in the mailing list archives. > During the install, the boot manager choosing screen suggest to install= =20 > nothing. What option should I choose ? How should I partition= =20 > my disk to have this dual boot. Using Lilo without linux is probably not the best choice -- if you modify anything that entails reconfiguring lilo, I believe you'll need a bootable Linux partition to do that. > What kind of bootmanager should I use ? Does Windows XP (or 2000) could= =20 > boot FreeBSD (hum ?) ? Indeed, the WinXP boot manager is reputedly capable of booting FreeBSD: http://bsdvault.net/sections.php?op=3Dviewarticle&artid=3D88 > 2. On my standalone disk (cf. (*1)), I use the default bootloader of=20 > FreeBSD. > But I can not delete if from my HD, whereas I can delete lilo by=20 > executing fdisk /MBR ? So what is the issue ? Running 'fdisk /MBR' from DOS, or equivalently running: # fdisk -i -B -b /boot/mbr =66rom within FreeBSD, will over-write the FreeBSD bootloader with a default master boot record and wipe out any custom bootloaders. > 3. Why there is only 2 CD-ROM for the 5.1 whereas there is 4 for the 4.X ? If you buy FreeBSD CD Roms from on of the resellers, you'll get 4 CDs as per usual. The 3rd and 4th CD Roms simply contain pre-built packages which are all available by FTP already. > 4. Is Java now well supported (I tried once to install it, but it did=20 > not work since I did not found the right version of the JDK to port). I= =20 > 'd like to install a true J2EE plateform on BSD ! The java/jdk14 and java/jdk13 ports are both running excellently for me. Note that these give you J2SE, not J2EE, but that makes very little difference for almost all applications. Installing the native jdk ports involves a great deal more palaver than it really should. Sun's licensing requirements mean that you can just go and grab the sources from a website or ftp server in the usual way. So you have to go to Sun's website and register and click on buttons that say that you agree to their terms. Then in order to compile the native java for the first time, you need to have a pre-compiled version of java at pretty much the same release level. That means that you'll need to temporarily install eg. the linux-sun-jdk14 port in order to compile the native jdk14 port. Once you've got a native jdk14 port, you can pkg_delete linux-sun-jdk14 and any other now redundant dependency required to install the port. But how to boot on BSD ? On the boot manager choosing screen, choosing nothing is an option, not a suggestion. Perhaps it is the default because of a "first, do no harm" perspective. > So I tried to install BSD with Linux and Windows, and use Lilo to boot > BSD. Well, it works, but I am not satisfied, since Linux is still > necessary to boot. What option should I choose ? How should I partition > my disk to have this dual boot. Partitioning is a separate consideration from booting (though Windows usually likes to have its system partition as the first partition on the first hard drive; there are ways to get around this, but it's easier just to allow it). Partition as you like. You then have several options regarding booting. > What kind of bootmanager should I use ? FreeBSD's boot manager will work. Grub is in the ports and is an excellent, very configurable bootloader/manager. Read the Grub documentation (it's available online) *very* carefully before you use it (as in fact you should with all boot managers). If you want a boot manager that does things more automagically and needs less configuration, try GAG. > Does Windows XP (or 2000) could > boot FreeBSD (hum ?) ? A moment's thought will tell you why you don't want to *delete* FreeBSD's bootloader or any other: What results is an unbootable disk! If you want to *replace* it with another bootloader/manager, go right ahead - it won't resist. Of course, if you are trying to remove FreeBSD's bootloader from disk 2 by running fdisk/mbr on disk 1, I can understand why it doesn't work. ;) > 3. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. As with Redhat or debian with .rpm >and .deb are there precompiled packages for FreeBSD? > I've seen/heard of precompiled packages, but A. don't trust them and B. don't need them. (though you may...) Once installed, FreeBSD has a wonderful thing called the ports collection, which eliminates much of the work done by the user in compiling programs. (To me, using an executable built for my machine is preferable to using one built by someone else; it's part of the reason I want a built-in compiler to begin with.) See here: http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports.html for a more complete discussion of this. Generally, you can install a port by simply doing make && make install in the port directory; it will download, verify, compile, and install the program. As a side note, I've only found one program that was available precompiled on bsd (I don't remember which one...), which makes the answer to this very short; they are available, but good luck finding them. >And other than this mailing list are there any other sites or lists to get >help for newbies? That's kind of a catch-22. This list itself is not for newbie support, it's more for newbies to chat. (The idea of 'newbie support' is kind of an oxymoron in itself. You should want advice from people with as much skill as possible.) Technical assistance is available from -questions. For newbie help, the http://www.FreeBSD.org/ site is your best friend; 9 out of 10 newbie questions are answered in the documentation there. The handbook, etc., are available there. If you can't find it in the documentation, another good place to look is google. Specifically, http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&group=mailing.freebsd.questions , which is a very good archive, and http://www.google.com/bsd . I'm sure you'll like FreeBSD, (everyone does) Peace, Clayton _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jun 28 14:35:15 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8233B37B401 for ; Sat, 28 Jun 2003 14:35:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp01.wlv.untd.com (smtp01.wlv.untd.com [209.247.163.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id E13CF43FDD for ; Sat, 28 Jun 2003 14:35:14 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from idiot1@netzero.net) Received: (qmail 27991 invoked from network); 28 Jun 2003 21:35:12 -0000 Received: from dialup-67.31.212.97.dial1.tampa1.level3.net (HELO netzero.net) (67.31.212.97) by smtp01.wlv.untd.com with SMTP; 28 Jun 2003 21:35:12 -0000 Message-ID: <3EFE098B.8@netzero.net> Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 17:32:59 -0400 From: Kirk Bailey Organization: Silas Dent Memorial Cabal of ERIS Esoteric and hot dog boiling society User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020823 Netscape/7.0 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org, tutor@python.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: intresting spam idiots X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 21:35:15 -0000 OK, this gets intresting. I have an email service. Free email. You fill out a form it sends the information to you in a email, you click reply, it comes to another script, said script sends a confo letter, and the alias feeds the letter into an inbox for human creation of the account. I get a lot of bounces from accounts that do not exist on other services. ??? Now track this carefully. 1. you fill out a form, and click submit. 2. the script creates letter and sends it. 3. you get it. You click reply, verify or correct it and click SEND. 4. It goes to an alias feeding another script, and a mailbox. 5. the script on that alias sends a acknowledgement message to the account the letter came from. No applications coming to me. But bounces of acknowledgement letters going to accounts on other sites that do not exist. HUH? ok, giving this considerable thought, we decided that someone was spamming the script's alias in a way that simply strobed the script, but no valid email was found, so nothing was fed to the mailbox intended to receive the application replies. HOW? We still scratch our hides over that one. We figured a way to stop this (changing aliases and script names), and the torrent of bounces has trickled down, down, down, as the bouncing mail in the world wide wow cleans itself out. We think someone out there even found a way to invoke a script without feeding it an email. Our solutions should defeat this, until they guess the correct script names. Then we change again. The lengths some spamjerks will go to are simply amazing. As we actively persue spammers, one or more of them must have decided to jerk us around, to no profit, simply for spite's sake. All our site's scripts live in the web cgi-bin. Of course, the http server can access and run them. But some of them are used only to process email. We are considering moving them into another directory altogether where the httpd (web server) cannot access them. This ought to close a window, and prevent future attacks. Any of you using scripts to process email may care to see if one can access teh scripts through the webserver, and feed them data in ways not foreen; even if they do not inflict harm, a vindictive person could take up a great deal of time and bandwidth triggering scripts with an automatic program, and even possibly in time gain your site a reputation for spewing amazing amounts of garbage- and subsequent blacklisting.
