Since not much is happening on this list (other than messages that should be addressed to freebsd-questions:) I thougth Id send some encouraging stuff! Im a semi-newbie to FreeBSD, and have been using it full-time for a couple of months now. I've successfully installed and run several applications and done some other cool stuff, but mostly everyday work. Anything out of the ordinary has resulted in an hour's googling or asking The List. Now Ma & Pa is going on vacation in Europe, and they decided to invest in a digital camera, a Pentax of some sort, very nice thingamabob. Of course, the technically talented offspring (me) had to try fiddling around with it for a while, taking pictures of everything in sight! Very amusing! Now, doing stuff like installing new disks, addning new hardware, configuring devices etc, has always forced me to seek information on the net, cause I've always been totally clueless! This time, installing (or connecting rather) the camera on FreeBSD was as simple (?!?) as recompiling the kernel with an extra device, plugging in, mounting it and copying the pics from the camera! No sweat! Point is: It may seem overwhelming to throw yourself from the safe world of Windows into the world of FreeBSD (or UNIX/Linux), but it takes you a few weeks to get out of the Windows-thinking, and then another few to get into the UNIX... Go get yourself a digital camera folks! Not only is it hilarious to take pictures of your friends embarrass themselves, but you will also get it working with your beloved FreeBSD without a sweat! Maybe this should be in advocacy! =o) Keep it up! /Jalle From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 30 03:42:32 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 46ABC37B401 for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2003 03:42:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mx1.lphp.org (APastourelles-107-1-17-126.w81-48.abo.wanadoo.fr [81.48.127.126]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FF3B43F75 for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2003 03:42:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ajacoutot@lphp.org) Received: from srv01.lphp.org.local (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mx1.lphp.org (8.12.8p1/8.12.8) with ESMTP id h5UAgSj5044900 for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2003 12:42:28 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ajacoutot@lphp.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by srv01.lphp.org.local (8.12.8p1/8.12.8/Submit) id h5UAgMBx044899 for freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org; Mon, 30 Jun 2003 12:42:22 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ajacoutot@lphp.org) X-Authentication-Warning: srv01.lphp.org.local: www set sender to ajacoutot@lphp.org using -f Received: from sta01.lphp.org.local (sta01.lphp.org.local [192.168.0.4]) by webmail.lphp.org (IMP) with HTTP for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2003 12:42:22 +0200 Message-ID: <1056969742.3f00140ec4d53@webmail.lphp.org> Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 12:42:22 +0200 From: Antoine Jacoutot To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org References: <5.2.1.1.0.20030630121325.02cf6708@pop3.hbg.bonet.se> In-Reply-To: <5.2.1.1.0.20030630121325.02cf6708@pop3.hbg.bonet.se> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-15 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.2.1 / FreeBSD-4.8 Subject: Re: Success story! No need to be afraid of switching, basically all features you would ever use in Photoshop are also in GIMP (I said "basically", don't reply to tell feature "foo" isn't there). However, be prepared to spend some extra time in the beginning to _find_ those features in GIMP if you are used to Photoshop. I'd like to say that you should stick with watever feels best for you, but that doesn't mean not to broaden your horizons! Try GIMP and see what you think of it, it's probably the only way you'll ever be sure. Antoine: If it works in Linux, it should work in FreeBSD too... Try again some time when you feel experimental. After all, we all know that FreeBSD is the Right Thing (tm), right?!? ;o) /Jalle >Ken >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Jalle" >To: >Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 6:34 AM >Subject: Success story! > > > > Hey! > > Since not much is happening on this list (other than messages that should > > be addressed to freebsd-questions:) I thougth Id send some encouraging >stuff! > > > > Im a semi-newbie to FreeBSD, and have been using it full-time for a couple > > of months now. Started out with OS-9 on a Tandy CoCo II, and other than a few things I have had to do at work on a Windows machine have never used anything but UNIX like OSs. However other than getting my sound card working and printing setup and running have never tried to get anything going on here. I have a scanner in a box that I have never taken out, but that's mainly because it was given to me and I have never had a reason to use it. I have been thinking about picking up a digital camera though and find your posting most encouraging. So when I get a few more pennies saved up and buy my new Olympus C 720 hopefully I will be posting a similar success story for the list. Some of the more "essential" ports are available as packages. These can be found on CDs 1, 3 and 4 of the official CD distribution. More current ones can also be found at ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/packages/ (use a mirror). I asked a question in this forum about a fortnight or so ago,= about what does the forum do, as I could never see anything happening. Well, within two days, two people told me that I had set up my= account wrong and how to fix it straight away. To wit, I have done so,= and I sent them a nice (I hope it was !) e-mail, thanking them for their= help. However, two days ago another kind person answered my query and told me the same method of rectifying the problem, and it was= only then that I realised that I forgot to tell the forum that the problem= had been solved. So, thanks again everyone who has helped me - I can now see the voluminous requests and advice flying into my e-mail box every= day. Now, when I get myself sorted out on VMware (where I am= "evaluating" FreeBSD), I will be able to (hopefully) contribute to this forum= a little bit more. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. I'm a total stranger to the Unix world... too long have I dwelled in the Windows area, and now I'm searching for new horizons and worlds to explore... the Unix world. I looked around and found FreeBSD interesting enough to install... and here I am with a strange problem: I installed FreeBSD 5.0-Release and got the system running. So far - so good. Second task: Install bind and get the DNS running. So far - so good - at least I think so. Third task was to get my email work... and now the problems begins. I own the domain beutler.se, and my computers name is visthusboden. The server accepts incoming mail all right - no problems there... BUT... ...whatever I do, all outgoing mail get the address user@visthusboden.beutler.se instead of user@beutler.se What am I doing wrong? I've checked and tripple-checked every file in /etc/namedb/ and everything looks fine (no missing dots or some simple problem like that) and I've really read this through in the FreeBSD manual... and still... ??? I'm at whits end here folks... please help me out! (Other than the obvious reason.) If you're using gcc 3.2, the -msse2 flag is known to cause this problem. Other than that, what you propose sounds like the next thing to check. I'll cc -questions, which is the proper list for tech. advice. Maybe someone there will have a better answer for you. You can alter /etc/make.conf to change the flags; I'm not sure how it picks up the 'automatic settings.' (Again, maybe someone at -questions will have a better answer.) In fact I was about to give up, when I thought of something simple; the env variable HOST. Looking through the man page, I was unable to determine whether sendmail uses this, but I'd recommend giving it a try. (It may break other app.s, though...) You might also try adding the users to the aliases file. (I know next to nothing about sendmail... I'm not really sure that will do what you want... The files do have man pages, though.) As a final piece of advice, you'll consistently get more/better/quicker help by writing -questions. If no one here gives you a good answer, try there. (I have a feeling someone here knows the answer, as sendmail is pretty ubiquitous...) Peace, Clayton PS. Sounds like you've had some good/fun adventures with FreeBSD already. If your problems are not this simple, you should try writing a more detailed description of the problem and send it to -questions Peace, Clayton _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 5 13:16:27 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BB7237B404 for ; Sat, 5 Jul 2003 13:16:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: from webmail04.nyc.untd.com (outbound-20.nyc.untd.com [64.136.20.100]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id BDB4B43FDD for ; Sat, 5 Jul 2003 13:16:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from smithhy@juno.com) Received: from cookie.untd.com by cookie.untd.com for <"ubQJ9wNEMeVu5cdxNWHHZ85dJNPRzChAdzUKM6zHhVjnBWNmTPus6Q==">; Sat, 05 Jul 2003 16:15:48 EDT Received: (from smithhy@juno.com) by webmail04.nyc.untd.com (jqueuemail) id H4CQRMME; Sat, 05 Jul 2003 16:15:48 EDT Received: from [192.160.130.10] by webmail04.nyc.untd.com with HTTP: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 20:15:35 GMT X-Originating-IP: [192.160.130.10] X-Original-From: smithhy@juno.com Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 20:15:35 GMT To: j.e.drews@worldnet.att.net X-Mailer: WebMail Version 2.0 Content-Type: text/plain From: smithhy@juno.com Message-Id: <20030705.161548.1645.778748@webmail04.nyc.untd.com> cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: How do I get KDE to run?
