Instead of their win98 .. So I rode lots of docs about freebsd (specialy handbook, faq,=20 beginners), downloaded iso images of the 5.1release and started the=20 install from cd. Everythings were almost nice the first time (with learning, reading,=20 understanding behind) so far I tried to add wheel mouse to my=20 configuration. It was a bad idea because the next time I started freebsd my rc.conf=20 had a bad character (eof instead of backquote or whatever) on the 1456=20= th line (of a 1455 lines file). Maybee because I made change with=20 abiword ... Before that time I had been able to set up a good configuration for my=20= ps2 mouse and it worked fine inside kde and even in console mode. Unable to make a new rc.conf from the bad one I made a new install of=20 freebsd but probably not the good one as my kde taskbar don't have=20 anymore direct to shell button. (I will have a look at that later). The main trouble I have now is to stop stupid behavior of my mouse : as=20= soon I move it too fast or move a couple pixels to left it refuges=20 itself on left edge of the screen. Tried to control that from kde but=20 did not get any amelioration. Kde mouse is set to sysmouse so I would=20 like to get a correct mouse behavior from sysinstall test mouse dialog. The best thing I can get now is with Microsoft IntelliMouse but pointer=20= still go as quick as possible to left side of the screen, whichever=20 protocol I use. I tried many ways to come back the first time I setted, tried to=20 remember the good words to ask google but at least get exausted : how=20 to configure freebsd mouse focus (to the macos one) in console mode ? "auto" give me the worse : each move of the mouse act as accept (or=20 refuse ?) sysinstall dialog "Is the mouse cursor moving" Hopefully Laurent Demaret --=20 laurent.demaret@freeNoSpam.fr From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 30 05:15:46 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 78E2816A4CE for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 05:15:46 -0800 (PST) Received: from mout.perfora.net (mout.perfora.net [217.160.230.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2038B43F85 for ; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 05:15:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dark@perfora.net) Received: from [217.160.230.52] (helo=smtp.perfora.net) by mout.perfora.net with esmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1AQRQO-0006oU-00; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 08:15:44 -0500 Received: from [24.169.60.91] (helo=mxus.perfora.net) by smtp.perfora.net with asmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1AQRQN-0003lv-00; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 08:15:43 -0500 Received: by mxus.perfora.net (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 522405F4C; Sun, 30 Nov 2003 08:16:30 -0500 (EST) Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 08:16:30 -0500 From: Dev Tugnait To: Laurent Demaret Message-ID: <20031130131630.GA90661@daemon.org> References: <20031130112315.GC87835@daemon.org> <34F658A6-2336-11D8-A803-000393A95684@free.fr> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable In-Reply-To: <34F658A6-2336-11D8-A803-000393A95684@free.fr> X-Editor: Vim http://www.vim.org/ X-Info: http://unixdaemon.org X-Operating-System: Unix/5.1-RELEASE (i386) X-Uptime: 8:14AM up 4 days, 21:04, 14 users, load averages: 0.18, 0.29, 0.32 User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.5.1i cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Console ps2 mouse behavior control (was : Re: test) X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 13:15:46 -0000 Well hi firstly make sure /etc/rc.conf does set Emulate3Buttons=3Dyes...YOu= didnt specify what mouse you have...Auto works fine mos t of the time. So if you have an usb mouse you just plug it in and follow the manual ... Even to choose your desktop manager :-) So just _thank you_ to all the people that took on their time to do that. I wont be able to give back to the community anything excepted maybe to learn my children how to use a personnal computer (or anybody else tired from another system) And buy a good big french book if somebody knows ? So: it# moused -i moused: option requires an argument -- i usage: moused [-DRcdfs] [-I file] [-F rate] [-r resolution] [-S baudrate] [-a X [,Y]] [-C threshold] [-m N=3DM] [-w N] [-z N] [-t ] [-3 [-E timeout]] -p moused [-d] -i -p The first line tell that the option i requires an argumet. The - prefixed are options, the things after them untill the next options are arguments. The last line tells us the sintax we are looking for. The squera brackets around -d "[-d]" tells this option is not mandatory (and in fact stands for debbug). Between the angular bracketsthere is a list of possible arguments; being separated by the "|" caracter we find out that they are alternative arguments, e.g. only one can be use at a time. So lets try: it# moused -i all -p psm0 moused: unable to open psm0: No such file or directory Well: it# pwd /usr/home/itetcu so I'm now in my home directory; as psm0 is in the /dev - devices directory is clear that I should: it# moused -i all -p /dev/psm0 moused: unable to open /dev/psm0: Device busy Hmm. I'm in X, I have an working mouse so that is normal, as another instance of moused has binded to that device. If I want to use that I should first try to kill moused. One way to do this is: it# ps ax | grep moused 499 ?? Ss 0:47.25 /usr/sbin/moused -z 4 -p /dev/psm0 -t auto 9473 p2 R+ 0:00.00 grep moused ps gives me the processis running. The first colum is the PID - proccess id. In order to free the psm0 device I do now: #kill -3 499 which will send a QUIT signal to moused (of course, this will leave me without a working mouse). Now the best approch to resolve your problem will be: 1. RTFM - Read The F(endly) Man page by=20 it# man moused 2. Disable all the mouse-related lines in /etc/rc.conf 3. Either reboot or do the ps ... kill sequence 4. Do the moused -i all -p /dev/psm0 - this will tell you how the system "sees" your mouse. 5. Reread the moused man page. 6. Try to start the moused manually, playing with the options untill you have a working mouse in the console; first it should work OK - e.g. not jumping, "autoclicking", etc. in the console, after which you could start paying with wheel related options. Probably you should try -t options intellimouse and mousesystems. The -d option will result in a lot of debbug information (that problably no one but those who know the code of moused will completly understand - but it can give you hints of what it is happening). There is on other option that you can set in the kernel to debug psm, but I don't think it's the case to use it. Also note that, if you use 5.1 and you have some AWARD BIOS version and you boot with ACPI enabled (default) the problem could be commming from here. Try booting without ACPI first and see if that's the case. There is an open PR on this issue ( namely: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3Di386/55473 ) and some ongoing work on it. --=20 IOnut Unregistered ;) FreeBSD user From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 1 06:28:15 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6ABF416A4CE for ; Mon, 1 Dec 2003 06:28:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from rdsnet.ro (smtp.rdsnet.ro [62.231.74.130]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EC6A84404E for ; Mon, 1 Dec 2003 06:27:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from itetcu@apropo.ro) Received: (qmail 12122 invoked from network); 1 Dec 2003 14:27:27 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro) (81.196.25.19) by mail.rdsnet.ro with SMTP; 1 Dec 2003 14:27:27 -0000 Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 16:28:08 +0200 From: Ion-Mihai Tetcu To: Laurent Demaret Message-Id: <20031201162808.42f45f14.itetcu@apropo.ro> In-Reply-To: References: <20031130153549.7a34a835.itetcu@apropo.ro> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.6claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.1) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Console ps2 mouse behavior control (was : Re: test) X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 01 Dec 2003 14:28:15 -0000 On Sun, 30 Nov 2003 18:58:44 +0100 Laurent Demaret wrote: > > Hello, > > > >> Well hi firstly make sure /etc/rc.conf does set > >> Emulate3Buttons=yes...YOu didnt specify what mouse you have... > > ^^^^^^^^^^^^ > > So how do you know ? > It is a ps2 mouse 5 buttons with its clicking wheel > > > > >> Auto > >> works fine mos t of the time. > It does not for me, specially in console mode : when running sysinstall > test mouse configuration any move of the mouse close and open several > times that dialogue same way if I taped enter on the keyboard. Does freebsd offer s reasonable way for divert socket? i heard it could be done using netgraph...It should be also possible to catch ethernet frames (not only IP), since this would be happening on an ipsec bridge. 2.This brings me to following point: Is there a similar solution for ipsec-bridging, like explained in the example of "man brconfig" of openbsd? 3.IS it possible to do MAC-Adress spoofing on a freeBSD machine? So far, I've got one last major thing to fix and then I'd say its pretty much perfect :-). When I do a startx (I'm using gnome if that matters) Everything comes up ok except that the screen is somewhere between half an inch to a quarter of an inch off to the right side. I went and did the xfree86 -configure as per the handbook to get it up and going. I don't know if this matters but I've got a GeForce3 Ti200 and a Dell E550 monitor. I asked on questions and all I got was experiment with xvidtune. Can anyone give me any pointers? I doubt that this is anywhere in the Handbook or FAQ, so I'll answer this seemingly technical question even though this list isn't for technical questions... Adjust your monitor. Every modern monitor has dozens of possible resolution / refresh rate combinations. Each combination has its own settings in the monitor. If you've never adjusted the monitor settings for this combination before, it will still have the factory settings, which in my experience, are never right. What looks centered and perfect in Windows using a 1280x1024 @ 75Hz maybe be off-center in XFree86 using 1280x1024 @ 85Hz. You will find the fetch target of make interesting. If you are in the ports somewhere annd you do : # make fetch the ports system will begin downloading the sources, but not building them. You can this way issue an make fetch at night and build the port next day, which is usefull when you have to build a big port like gnome, kde or open office. An other intersting target for make is:=20 #make fetch-recursive which will fetch not only the sources for the port you are in, but also the sourfces for the ports that port depnds on (note, however, that fetch recursive will always download all the sources, even if they are already in you /usr/ports/distfiles). Yet there are 2 more things I want to talk you about: 1. the -k option of make, which tells make to continue, event if it has been an error=20 2. the BATCH and INTERACTIVE options, as there are some ports that need to get input from you, before fetching/building. This could be set as an enviroment (e.g. for csh: # setenv BATCH 1 or on the make commend line with the -D option). To sumarize, I have a nightly cron job that does: #cd /usr/ports && make -k -DBATCH fetch Actually, it is a little more complicated that this, but that's the ideea. Take a look at: http://www.freebsd-fr.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/index.= html or=20 /localhost/usr/share/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/index.html This will make you more familiarized with how the ports system is working. > Where you helped me by the presentation of grep command and=20 > visualisation of my moused work, so I had been able to see what was=20 > going on. :) The frenldy man page. I am a bit confused about applying updates etc.. I installed a box for trial it was 5.1, I wanted to see if I could use ports to update openssh for a test examp. After the port installed I noticed that another version of openssh was installed on the system. I talked with a friend and he said that it was part of usr/src and I could update it by compiling the usr.bin version.. which was fine and worked. Here are my questions: 1) if there are two trees(lack of better words) why would ssh exit in both the system tree and the ports tree ? Wouldnt it be better to have it in the ports tree ? 2) I have used gentoo in the past and am curious if there is something simular to emerge -up world/system -- I would like to cvs the ports/sys and then be able to see if anything need upgrading .. is this possible ? 3) Say there was a update to openssh .. which would be the proper way to update .. sync the sys tree and then just update ssh .. or sync the tree and recompile the system ? or remove the sys version and install the port version and update the port ? I am very happy with freebsd .. Im still in the exploring stage .. The reasons for my questions is that I am a little weary of using freebsd in production if I dont easily know when updates are avail, having to recompile the system everytime I need a patch for a service. (In fact, I'm not really allowed to answer your question here, other than to point to documentation.) What, on the surface, seems to be a simple newbie question actually involves far-reaching philosophical and technical implications. I'm sure they will be willing to give you advice on an install/upgrade path that suits your needs and clear up any confusion you have about the ports system. (If not, at least one newbie (me) will be watching for your message, and I may venture my opinions there, where I will be corrected if I'm wrong :).) I've set it up, but have a question about security updates. I am more familiar with redhat linux where I check for new rpm's on their update site and then install them using rpm. For BSD, I noticed they have a port collection, which you can update with cvsup. Also they have an errata section on the web where you can download and install security patches. I tried to install the cvs security patch, but after downloading, and following the instructions, it says context diff error... all the error output is below the text of this message. My main question is that I want to run a secure stable system on the internet, running ftp, apache httpd, and some other small apps. What is the method in BSD that I should be using to keep up with the updates/security issues? Thanks for your help. Any advice appreciated. Here is the full text of the error: freebsd# patch < /home/gordon/cvs.patch Hmm... Looks like a new-style context diff to me... It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. In addition to what's been recommended, I'd suggest grabbing the handbook --- ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/handbook (english version, multiple formats available) And placing it somewhere on the LAN where you can read it often. Also, in the previous response, the configuration line shown was for the RealTek driver (8139 chip) only. If you've got that NIC (lots of cards have the 8139 chip) then you should be good to go. You'll want to examine your "dmesg" if you have some other NIC; likely the system has ID'd it. Combine it with grep(1) and you should see the driver name/device number you need. This one's a 3com: [/home/kadmin] [11:59] #dmesg | grep Ethernet xl0: Ethernet address: 00:10:5a:e4:b1:04 So in this case it'd be ifconfig_xl0="inet 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0" that you'd want in /etc/rc.conf. I have this packages installed: cups-1.1.19.0 cups-base-1.1.19.0 cups-lpr-1.1.19.0 cups-pstoraster-7.07 ghostscript-gnu-7.07_3 I got configure my printer without any visible problem, but maybe it don't be so easy like "install packages and run". From all aplications that can print, when i open the print dialog i can see my printer ready and waiting for jobs, when i push the print button i don't get any error or problem message.... but the printing don't happen. From the web administration page of CUPS i can see my printer, ready, but if i try print a test page i don't have response. In the "Jobs" menu i see that there are not active jobs, i go to "Show completed jobs" and i see my jobs "cancelled at Sat Dec 6.." I try to do "Restart Job" and then i get: "Error: client-error-not-possible". What can be the possible causes for this?. Maybe can are there any missing file(s)?. Where can i find specific documentation about "Configure CUPS in the FreBSD system"?, i tried the Proyect official web site, but i don't found any related with this. Too tried the CUPS official site http://www.cups.org but i can't see nothing specific about FreeBSD. Please, help me. Thanks you very much, in advance. Regards. They are = both ATA133 IDE drives, but when I'm booting up FBSD 5.1 it says "ad0: = DMA Limited to UDMA 33, non ATA66 cable or device". And it says the same = for ad1. I am fairly sure that I'm using an 80-wire UDMA-133 IDE cable. = So what could be causing FBSD to set the drives to only UDMA 33? Thanks.
