How to change?) I tried options 1 through 5 with 1 working with lots of wrong characters... 2. doing "pkd_add -r XFree86" returns with an error: ... File unavailable ... Any hints? Many thanks! XFree86 doesn't work on the Ultra5 at current. syscons doesn't support the ATI card in it and you need syscons for X to work. --=20 Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 15 11:02:55 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56EE016A4CE for ; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:02:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CB01943D45 for ; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:02:29 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) hBFJ2TFR040518 for ; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:02:29 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id hBFJ2SXh040512 for freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:02:28 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:02:28 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200312151902.hBFJ2SXh040512@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 19:02:55 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. I can get a used Sun Netra T1 AC200 for a nice price and would like to know if it is realistic to run a FreeBSD server on this hardware. I want to run just a few personal domains on it for my family, so I won't not lose money when it has to be rebooted. I have browsed the -sparc64 archives, but have not found much recent real world experiences about running FreeBSD on this hardware. Documentation is sparse, so I hope you will forgive me for asking some newbie questions as anything sparc is new to me. Some questions are pertaining to the Netra hardware, some to FreeBSD/sparc64 general usage: 1. Is the Netra's serial port + FreeBSD's driver usable for getting FreeBSD up and running through serial console? I have read some problem reports on google getting serial to work, but those may be outdated. 2. Will it be reasonably safe to run 5.2-RELEASE on sparc64? An i386 5.1R box with similar usage is now 62 days up without a glitch, are uptimes such as these expected? 3. Does userland and ports usually run well on sparc64, or can I expect to have endian related issues? 4. What is the future plan for support of low-end sparc64 in FreeBSD? Are there enough people interested in these setups to keep them on the roadmap for the near future? 5. Is my plan a bad idea for any other reason that is not apparent? 8) Thanks in advance for helping me out! cheers, walter From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 18 20:57:12 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B567016A4CE for ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 20:57:12 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.seekingfire.com (coyote.seekingfire.com [24.72.10.212]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 161B043D31 for ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 20:57:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tillman@seekingfire.com) Received: from blues.seekingfire.prv (blues.seekingfire.prv [192.168.23.211]) by mail.seekingfire.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2028C2C for ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 22:57:08 -0600 (CST) Received: (from tillman@localhost) by blues.seekingfire.prv (8.11.6/8.11.6) id hBJ4v8k08719 for sparc64@freebsd.org; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 22:57:08 -0600 Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 22:57:07 -0600 From: Tillman Hodgson To: FreeBSD-Sparc64 Message-ID: <20031218225707.B8560@seekingfire.com> References: <92527552015.20031219053526@blue.calx.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i In-Reply-To: <92527552015.20031219053526@blue.calx.nl>; from freebsd@walter.transip.nl on Fri, Dec 19, 2003 at 05:35:26AM +0100 X-Habeas-SWE-1: winter into spring X-Habeas-SWE-2: brightly anticipated X-Habeas-SWE-3: like Habeas SWE (tm) X-Habeas-SWE-4: Copyright 2002 Habeas (tm) X-Habeas-SWE-5: Sender Warranted Email (SWE) (tm). It sounds good and I will check the machine out. :) I have one more question - the Netra T1 AC200 has an "Ultra2SCSI 80Mb/s" controller and place for two disks (standard 18GB). Although I have never seen SCSI disks fail, I don't know how old these disks are, so I would rather use new disks. I googled for disks people were using on the Sun Netra; some id's: da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-2 device da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-3 device da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-3 device Everybody seemed to use Sun-branded disks, so I take it FreeBSD will be fine with the disks that are in the machine. Sun branded disks ("branded" in that they have firmware which fixes the size of the disk) are only important if you are paying for support of the system, which you aren't. :-) Be aware they need to be SCA to connect to the board, and you need the standard Sun disk bracket thingys ("spuds") to mount them in the system. You can just recycle the ones you have if you're ditching the existing disks. I haven't had reliability problems with Sun disks to speak of, so unless you have money to burn, give the existing disks a shot. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 19 15:36:51 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 979EA16A4CE for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2003 15:36:51 -0800 (PST) Received: from s31xe3.systems.smu.edu (s31xe3.systems.smu.edu [129.119.70.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9745C43D1F for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2003 15:36:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from paulp@mail.smu.edu) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.0.6487.1 content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 17:36:50 -0600 Message-ID: X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: Netra T1 105 and two ethernet ports Thread-Index: AcPGiPmaiE8Gyx/kT+qUtnZ0XFSkcg== From: "Phillips, Paul" To: Subject: Netra T1 105 and two ethernet ports X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 23:36:51 -0000 Hello - I am quite new to FreeBSD, but not a complete newbie to the unix world. I have never done this, but I think you will have to give the second interface a netmask of 0xffffffff (255.255.255.255). If you get warnings in syslog about ARP messages arriving on the wrong interface (which is harmless in this situation), you can set the sysctl net.link.ether.inet.log_arp_wrong_iface=0 cheers, walter From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 19 16:55:24 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6E71316A4CF for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2003 16:55:24 -0800 (PST) Received: from s31xe3.systems.smu.edu (s31xe3.systems.smu.edu [129.119.70.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E3F443D39 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2003 16:55:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from paulp@mail.smu.edu) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.0.6487.1 content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 18:55:22 -0600 Message-ID: X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: Netra T1 105 and two ethernet ports Thread-Index: AcPGjvs+X0u9cI0TQM2fMwdPT9YYtAABJG1W From: "Phillips, Paul" To: "Will Andrews" cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: RE: Netra T1 105 and two ethernet ports X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2003 00:55:24 -0000 I tried: ifconfig hme1 ether 0a:00:20:c2:1c:c2 inet 192.168.1.95 netmask = 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 up doing it all in one statement as Will suggested, and got back: ifconfig: can't set link-level netmask or broadcast Hmm, Paul -----Original Message----- >=20 > I want to have each ethernet port with its own IP address, but both = addresses will be on the same subnet. >=20 > I can't make it work, so I have been reading various archives, trying = to figure out what was going on. >=20 > After noticing that both ports had the same MAC address, and doing = some archive reading, I found that I can easily change the second port = to another Mac address by doing this: >=20 > ifconfig hme1 ether aa:1:2:3:4:6 >=20 > I can confirm that this change in MAC address has taken place by = ifconfig with no arguments. >=20 > However, when I next type: > ifconfig hme1 inet 192.168.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 up >=20 > then I get this message: > ifconfig: ioctl (SIOCAIFADDR): File exists >=20 > I don't know what this means, or how to change it. Either use a serial terminal rather than the console, or use the 'n' and 'p' keys (next and previous) instead of arrow keys and live with the console quirks. -T -- Immobility is often mistaken for peace. - Emperor Elrood Corrino IX
