Wilko brought an issue in my face that a make(1) binary on his "a couple days ago" development box is dumping a core. I logged in to beast.FreeBSD.org only to find out the same, and also that cc(1) is dumping core as well when I try to compile a dummy source file: $ uname -a FreeBSD beast.freebsd.org 5.2-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT #462: Tue Aug 17 = 17:41:15 UTC 2004 kensmith@beast.freebsd.org:/usr/src/sys/alpha/compile= /BEAST alpha $ cat a.c void dummy(void) {} $ cc -o a.o a.c Segmentation fault (core dumped) $ make a.o Segmentation fault (core dumped) I'd call beast and Wilko's DS10 dead machines now. :-( Maybe this is related to the TLS work, I don't know... Maybe this has been fixed already, but these machines don't have a chance to upgrade nicely. The code I committed last Sunday should only have affected static binaries and threaded programs. I intentionally committed the rtld code weeks ago to give it a decent testing time before the code freeze. Was beast working ok with a world built before Sunday? I cannot test backing it out on these systems because they are now mostly dead: both cc(1) and make(1) are linked statically. $ hostname beast.freebsd.org $ ldd /usr/bin/cc /usr/bin/make ldd: /usr/bin/cc: not a dynamic executable ldd: /usr/bin/make: not a dynamic executable I suspect TLS changes very much because every static binary dumps a core now: $ /bin/ls /dev/null /dev/null $ file /rescue/ls /rescue/ls: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, Alpha (unofficial), version 1 (FreeB= SD), for FreeBSD 6.0, statically linked, stripped $ /rescue/ls /dev/null Segmentation fault (core dumped) I think there's no emergency plan other than to reinstall "base" on these systems from some older snapshot? To tell you the truth, some bits produced by cross-compiles on different architectures are not ready for use on a native architecture. This includes binary files such as fortune(6) .dat files, NLS catalogs, etc. I haven't identified them all yet. Once I get my "modern" Alpha box, I will start working on a project that will eventually address this, so cross- builds and releases will produce the same binary files as on native platforms. If this machine has been getting rebuilt frequently, then maybe you can just boot up kernel.old and have a working machine. If that does not work, and would a cross-compile work well-enough to generate a new library (if the problem is a library), or a new kernel (if the error is in the kernel). Or maybe just generate dynamically- linked versions of make & cc. Even if cross-builds are not good enough to do a complete buildworld, might they work well enough to recover from this with less work than a complete reinstall? On my sparc64 system, I have two sets of partitions, and every month or so I dump/restore to duplicate my working partitions to the second set (and change fstab automatically, so the second set boots right!). -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 14:41:22 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7775C16A4CE; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 14:41:22 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.qubesoft.com (gate.qubesoft.com [217.169.36.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD3BB43D49; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 14:41:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Received: from bluebottle.qubesoft.com (bluebottle.qubesoft.com [192.168.1.2]) by mail.qubesoft.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i7KEfEGR005394; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 15:41:14 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Received: from builder02.qubesoft.com (builder02.qubesoft.com [192.168.1.8]) i7KEfDJV027194; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 15:41:14 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) From: Doug Rabson To: Ruslan Ermilov In-Reply-To: <20040820135844.GA76070@ip.net.ua> References: <20040820101817.GE27931@ip.net.ua> <1092999187.9863.2.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820105915.GA29178@ip.net.ua> <1093000460.9863.4.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820120757.GC29568@ip.net.ua> <20040820135844.GA76070@ip.net.ua> Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <1093012873.9863.11.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.6 Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 15:41:13 +0100 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 'clamd / ClamAV version 0.65', clamav-milter version '0.60p' cc: Doug Rabson cc: alpha@freebsd.org cc: current@freebsd.org cc: Wilko Bulte Subject: Re: Alpha is seriously broken X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 14:41:22 -0000 On Fri, 2004-08-20 at 14:58, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: > On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 03:24:52PM +0200, Dag-Erling Sm?rgrav wrote: > > Ruslan Ermilov writes: > > > I think there's no emergency plan other than to reinstall "base" > > > on these systems from some older snapshot? > > > > cross-compile on a different machine in the cluster, copy over the new > > make(1), then use it to installworld over NFS. > > > Only if this machine is also Alpha. Oh and hope that beast > doesn't crash before you replace init :-) >=20 Hmm, but init(8) is also a statically linked binary. Heh, and I know why beast is still alive -- it's due to the way the /root script that automatically updates the world and kernel on beast works. The script does, in this risky sequence: buildworld, installworld, and the "old way" kernel build/install, then reboots in five minutes. At this time, after it made installworld and attempted to build a kernel, it failed to do so (the /boot/kernel/kernel is still old). Installworld was fine because it saves tools that it uses (including "sh" and "make" into WORLDTMP). So Ken, if you want to attempt to revive this machine, don't reboot it yet, it won't boot up with the new init(8). Of course, we have /sbin/init.bak saved, but... ;) Cheers, --=20 Ruslan Ermilov ru@FreeBSD.org FreeBSD committer --oTHb8nViIGeoXxdp Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFBJhV3qRfpzJluFF4RAme9AJ9u8H00u3jrl63ePnFEI+Oq6JM4vQCbBGuV 6RikAqqFwkKrZffmCL4Qdlw= =S5pp -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --oTHb8nViIGeoXxdp-- From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 16:16:01 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2A8AE16A4CF; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:16:01 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp4.server.rpi.edu (smtp4.server.rpi.edu [128.113.2.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA1DB43D5C; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:16:00 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from drosih@rpi.edu) Received: from [128.113.24.47] (gilead.netel.rpi.edu [128.113.24.47]) by smtp4.server.rpi.edu (8.13.0/8.13.0) with ESMTP id i7KGFvpM002429; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 12:15:58 -0400 Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: drosih@mail.rpi.edu Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <20040820144638.GA92603@ip.net.ua> References: <20040820101817.GE27931@ip.net.ua> <1092999187.9863.2.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820105915.GA29178@ip.net.ua> <1093000460.9863.4.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820120757.GC29568@ip.net.ua> <20040820135844.GA76070@ip.net.ua> <20040820144638.GA92603@ip.net.ua> Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 12:15:57 -0400 To: Ruslan Ermilov From: Garance A Drosihn Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" X-Scanned-By: CanIt (www . canit . ca) cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Alpha is seriously broken X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:16:01 -0000 At 5:46 PM +0300 8/20/04, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: >Garance, > >Did you read this thread before replying? :-) I did read all the emails that I had received before I wrote what I wrote. Log in to beast >and give it a try. I thought most of the system was dynamically linked these days. In any case, I still think my suggestion *might* work out, but if you are sure it is a waste of time to even try then I guess a full install is the only way out. If I can login, then I assume slogin/scp must be working, and I assume beast still has some filesystems nfs-mounted from other machines. If it were *me* with my lone sparc64 machine, I would try to create a "dry spot to stand on" by scp-ing some fixed-binaries into the box, and then nfs-mount a successful buildworld done on some other machine, and see how far that got me. I admit that some times my attempts to avoid a re-install have probably taken me more time than the re-install would have, but other times it has been well worth the attempt. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 16:46:12 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 261B516A4CE; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:46:12 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.qubesoft.com (gate.qubesoft.com [217.169.36.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35CDC43D39; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:46:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Received: from bluebottle.qubesoft.com (bluebottle.qubesoft.com [192.168.1.2]) by mail.qubesoft.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i7KGk9GR010046; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:46:10 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Received: from builder02.qubesoft.com (builder02.qubesoft.com [192.168.1.8]) i7KGk9JV031538; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:46:09 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) From: Doug Rabson To: Ruslan Ermilov In-Reply-To: <20040820151503.GC92603@ip.net.ua> References: <20040820101817.GE27931@ip.net.ua> <1092999187.9863.2.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820105915.GA29178@ip.net.ua> <1093000460.9863.4.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820120757.GC29568@ip.net.ua> <20040820135844.GA76070@ip.net.ua> <1093012873.9863.11.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820151503.GC92603@ip.net.ua> Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <1093020367.9863.13.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.6 Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:46:08 +0100 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 'clamd / ClamAV version 0.65', clamav-milter version '0.60p' cc: Wilko Bulte cc: alpha@FreeBSD.org cc: current@FreeBSD.org cc: Ken Smith Subject: Re: Alpha is seriously broken X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 16:46:12 -0000 On Fri, 2004-08-20 at 16:15, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: > On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 03:41:13PM +0100, Doug Rabson wrote: > > On Fri, 2004-08-20 at 14:58, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: > > > On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 03:24:52PM +0200, Dag-Erling Sm?rgrav wrote: > > > > Ruslan Ermilov writes: > > > > > I think there's no emergency plan other than to reinstall "base" > > > > > on these systems from some older snapshot? > > > > > > > > cross-compile on a different machine in the cluster, copy over the new > > > > make(1), then use it to installworld over NFS. > > > > > > > Only if this machine is also Alpha. Ok. I'm just getting the BETA1 builds running, beast will need to wait for a bit but I'll get to it ASAP. Dealing with the cluster machines has been ... educational. Last week I almost got sledge back from having wiped out both /rescue and /lib using cruft I found in /stand. It was to the point it was starting to be able to build stuff when it panic-ed on filesystem problems again. Peter has since had some time to look at it as well and it's likely the disk drive is dying last I heard from him (he said he rebooted it with a UP kernel and suddenly had block and character device files in /usr/src...). -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 17:48:50 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 24EB416A4CE; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:48:50 +0000 (GMT) Received: from tigra.ip.net.ua (tigra.ip.net.ua [82.193.96.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C83643D48; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:48:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ru@ip.net.ua) Received: from heffalump.ip.net.ua (heffalump.ip.net.ua [82.193.96.213]) by tigra.ip.net.ua (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7KHmiFA057010 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 20 Aug 2004 20:48:45 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from ru@ip.net.ua) Received: (from ru@localhost) by heffalump.ip.net.ua (8.13.1/8.13.1) id i7KHmjvf094232; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 20:48:45 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from ru) Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 20:48:45 +0300 From: Ruslan Ermilov To: Doug Rabson Message-ID: <20040820174845.GA94170@ip.net.ua> References: <20040820101817.GE27931@ip.net.ua> <1092999187.9863.2.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820105915.GA29178@ip.net.ua> <1093000460.9863.4.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820120757.GC29568@ip.net.ua> <20040820135844.GA76070@ip.net.ua> <1093012873.9863.11.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> <20040820151503.GC92603@ip.net.ua> <1093020367.9863.13.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="u3/rZRmxL6MmkK24" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <1093020367.9863.13.camel@builder02.qubesoft.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new cc: Wilko Bulte cc: alpha@FreeBSD.org cc: current@FreeBSD.org cc: Ken Smith Subject: Re: Alpha is seriously broken X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 17:48:50 -0000 --u3/rZRmxL6MmkK24 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 05:46:08PM +0100, Doug Rabson wrote: > On Fri, 2004-08-20 at 16:15, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: > > On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 03:41:13PM +0100, Doug Rabson wrote: > > > On Fri, 2004-08-20 at 14:58, Ruslan Ermilov wrote: > > > > On Fri, Aug 20, 2004 at 03:24:52PM +0200, Dag-Erling Sm?rgrav wrote: > > > > > Ruslan Ermilov writes: > > > > > > I think there's no emergency plan other than to reinstall "base" > > > > > > on these systems from some older snapshot? > > > > >=20 > > > > > cross-compile on a different machine in the cluster, copy over th= e new > > > > > make(1), then use it to installworld over NFS. > > > > >=20 > > > > Only if this machine is also Alpha. That was the first thing I though about. Unfortunately, /usr/obj/usr/src on beast is not around, because /root/buildworld.sh does the following: rm -rf world* build* /usr/obj/`/bin/pwd` tcsh -c 'time make -s buildworld' > /usr/src/world.log 2>&1 Since /bin/rm is dynamically linked, it succeeded in removing /usr/obj/usr/src. Then make(1) failed right away: $ cat /usr/src/world.log Segmentation fault (core dumped) 0.000u 0.005s 0:00.00 0.0% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w My sincere sympathies to Ken. Bets? More sympathies? >=20 It will succeed. Here's what I'd do: After chroot buildworld succeeds (was a very good idea to install to chroot!), try some statically linked binary from /h/kensmith, e.g., /h/kensmith/usr/obj/usr.bin/make/make to find that it now works. In this case, the crt1.c change was the culprit, and we really want to reinstall beast using these sources -- with mount_nullfs(8) mount /h/kensmith/usr/src to /usr/src and /h/kensmith/usr/obj to /usr/obj, and then do an installworld into /. After that, unmount nulled /usr/src and /usr/obj, back out the crt1.c change from /usr/src, and run /root/buildworld.sh, or just let cron(8) handle this. The crt1.c thing was apparently the problem and the above procedure did produce static executables that worked. /usr/src had been copied into my chroot space using tar and /usr/obj was already a symlink so I didn't need the mounts, just adjusted the symlink temporarily. I spent a little time wondering why 'make installworld' resulted in: +@cd: not found but then got the idea it was probably make version issues, copied /usr/share/mk out of my chroot directory to /usr/share and that was all it took.
