You're probably fighting different daemons, but letting people know that they need device.hinsts on alpha to get 5.3 booting properly would be handy. Guess this bug is old and just triggered as a result of the timeout. I'm missing an IRQ in the probe, so the timeout is reasonable. Normaly we should see: sym0: interrupting at ISA irq 11 A complete boot -v output would be interessting to see routing decisions - sounds much like someone broke IRQ routing on alpha. LCA based alphas are the only alphas so far that we have enabled interrupt routing and possibly the only alphas that share ISA and PCI interrupts. > > opcode = 0x29 > > register = 0x1 > > pc = 0xfffffc0000438138 > > ra = 0xfffffc0000438234 > > sp = 0xfffffc0000e098c0 > > usp = 0x0 > > curthread = 0xfffffc00008c5cc8 > > pid = 0, comm = swapper > > > > [thread 0] > > Stopped at ___sym_mfree+0x58: beq t0,___sym_mfree+0x64 > > > > db> trace > > ___sym_mfree() at ___sym_mfree+0x58 > > --- root of call graph --- > > > > == > > > > All this machines run without problems FreeBSD version 4.x ( 7<= x <=9 )! > > I'm wondering if the new compiler in 5.x has any relation to this problem. We don't have to do anything special with interrupts on PC164* systems. > Hmm.... Both PC64 and AXPpci33 are EV4x machines.. Hmm.. all my test > boxes are >= EV5 To be exact AXPpci33 is LCA with an 21066 CPU or LCA45 with an 21066A CPU, which is very similar to EV4 and EV45. It seems that those boards are sold with 21066 CPUs only and that 21066A only made it into Alphabooks and maybe some Multias. But EV5 is just a different core without (AFAIK) any changes to the opcodes. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Aug 29 13:36:56 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 59DA716A4CE; Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:36:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp3.sentex.ca (smtp3.sentex.ca [64.7.153.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0896943D1F; Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:36:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1.sentex.ca [199.212.134.4]) by smtp3.sentex.ca (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id i7TDarpV063149; Sun, 29 Aug 2004 09:36:53 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7TDat6R036288; Sun, 29 Aug 2004 09:36:55 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 49CE47303F; Sun, 29 Aug 2004 09:36:55 -0400 (EDT) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20040829133655.49CE47303F@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 09:36:55 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [current tinderbox] failure on alpha/alpha X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:36:56 -0000 TB --- 2004-08-29 12:15:00 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2004-08-29 12:15:00 - starting CURRENT tinderbox run for alpha/alpha TB --- 2004-08-29 12:15:00 - checking out the source tree TB --- 2004-08-29 12:15:00 - cd /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha TB --- 2004-08-29 12:15:00 - /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2004-08-29 12:20:21 - building world (CFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2004-08-29 12:20:21 - cd /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src TB --- 2004-08-29 12:20:21 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything TB --- 2004-08-29 13:24:08 - building generic kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2004-08-29 13:24:08 - cd /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src TB --- 2004-08-29 13:24:08 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=GENERIC >>> Kernel build for GENERIC started on Sun Aug 29 13:24:08 UTC 2004 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything >>> Kernel build for GENERIC completed on Sun Aug 29 13:36:54 UTC 2004 TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - cd /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/sys/alpha/conf TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - cd /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src TB --- 2004-08-29 13:36:54 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Sun Aug 29 13:36:54 UTC 2004 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel -------------------------------------------------------------- cd /tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/sys/alpha/conf; PATH=/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/legacy/usr/sbin:/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/legacy/usr/bin:/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/legacy/usr/games:/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/usr/sbin:/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/usr/bin:/home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/i386/usr/games:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin config -d /home/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/obj/alpha/tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/sys/LINT /tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/sys/alpha/conf/LINT /tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src/sys/alpha/conf/LINT: unknown option "HW_WDOG" *** Error code 1 Stop in /tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /tinderbox/CURRENT/alpha/alpha/src. This means that the hardcoding of : the serial console and the debug port has been removed. As such, : hints are now required for the sio(4) driver to become a console : or debug port. The NO_SIO option has been decommissioned because : of this. I don't use mergemaster(8) personally, I use the old way of updating /etc and other stuff: cd /usr/src/etc dir=3D/var/tmp/`date +%Y%m%d` mkdir -p $dir make distrib-dirs distribution DESTDIR=3D$dir and merging manually, using diff(1) with the saved output from the previous such run. But I specifically made the "distribution" target in src/etc/Makefile install the device.hints file, in a hope that mergemaster(8) will pick it up. Is it not the case? : revision 1.326 : date: 2004/03/14 17:18:39; author: ru; state: Exp; lines: +3 -3 : I believe most of /boot/device.hints out there are based (if not : identical) on GENERIC.hints, hence the following change: :=20 : Moved the creation of /boot/device.hints where it belongs. This : should aid in merging GENERIC.hints changes to /boot/device.hints, : using mergemaster(8) or a similar approach. Ah, it looks like mergemaster(8) only cares about updating /etc, which is bad. :-( This means that the following files will never be updated by mergemaster(8): /COPYRIGHT /boot/device.hints /root/.cshrc /root/.k5login /root/.login /root/.profile Doug, can you fix mergemaster(8) to care about updating at least /COPYRIGHT, /boot, and /root? That would be very handy. The only mention about 21066A is as "future DECchip 21066/21068 processor upgrades" Interesting about your version is that they also mention a 21068A. Wonder what's different between 21066 and 21068 beside the clock frequency that they gave them a different number. Considered that it made it into A revision there must have been a market for it. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 00:44:24 DES is correct, mm uses src/etc/Makefile which builds a complete tree, and populates it with various files, mostly in /etc/ of course, but mm compares all the real files in that "temproot" tree. One thing we could do rather than continuing to "abuse" src/etc/Makefile by adding things like /boot/device.hints is give mm some specific knowledge about files like that, but I've studiously tried to avoid giving it "special knowledge" about files for a lot of reasons. The most important to me was not adding extra burdens to either myself or maintainers of other parts of the tree to update that special knowledge, but also important is the problem of updates across various boundaries. It's currently quite possible to use older versions of mm to update newer systems, but the more special knowledge about individual files you give it, the harder that is to maintain. I don't expect anyone to actually have a way to exercise this code, but as it is, it's quite broken. The patch switches to scanning the interface list by the approved method instead of trying to access all the indexes between 1 and if_index as though they all exist. Mmmm - I oversaw that you have an additional PCI bus with a bridged device on it. Damn - you said that you can't open the maschine as I would suggest moving the card into a slot on the primary bus or keep it out. Wilko, I heard rumours that you've send Poul the box? Did it ever run FreeBSD before? I can at least tell for shure that we have some bugs in alpha PCI code that showed up on the AS4100 with a bridged card in the secondary bus in that access was tried through the primary bus. I think bridged cards are supported at the primary bus only right now. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 12:09:03 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C555A16A4CE for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:09:03 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp-vbr7.xs4all.nl (smtp-vbr7.xs4all.nl [194.109.24.27]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4380443D60 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:09:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (freebie.xs4all.nl [213.84.32.253]) by smtp-vbr7.xs4all.nl (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7UC91dB063322; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:09:01 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.11/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i7UC91n1050543; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:09:01 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: (from wb@localhost) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7UC91qX050542; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:09:01 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb) Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:09:01 +0200 From: Wilko Bulte To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20040830120901.GA50520@freebie.xs4all.nl> References: <20040830105358.GH59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <48170.1093864941@critter.freebsd.dk> <20040830113609.GJ59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <20040830114821.GK59909@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040830114821.GK59909@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-OS: FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE X-PGP: finger wilko@freebsd.org X-Virus-Scanned: by XS4ALL Virus Scanner cc: Poul-Henning Kamp cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 5.3 beta1 is no go for me. I think even the de(4)/dc(4) needed to be on the primary bus. Sorry - I was wrong - the bridged card is at the primary bus and already probed fine. But there is a pci1 bus somewehere that doesn't show up by itself in the log. We have pci0 as the primary bus and the bus behind the bridge gets named pci2. Looks like the machine check is while probing pci1. I've checked the hardware notes and an AS1000A has 7 PCI and 2 EISA slots - so we physically have pci1. The bridge is on an add-on card, right? Other point - acording to the hardware notes an AS1000A can only be EV4 or EV5, however this box probes as EV56 and also the chipset is probed with BWEN. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 12:51:26 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2925416A4CE for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:51:26 +0000 (GMT) Received: from srv1.cosmo-project.de (srv1.cosmo-project.de [213.83.6.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 72C6243D39 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:51:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely5.cicely.de (cicely5.cicely.de [IPv6:3ffe:400:8d0:301:200:92ff:fe9b:20e7]) (authenticated bits=0) i7UCpLaI079467 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=OK); Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:51:23 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely12.cicely.de (cicely12.cicely.de [IPv6:3ffe:400:8d0:301::12]) by cicely5.cicely.de (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i7UCousu079396 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:50:56 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely12.cicely.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cicely12.cicely.de (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7UCot4v047995; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:50:56 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: (from ticso@localhost) by cicely12.cicely.de (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7UCorES047994; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:50:53 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ticso) Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:50:53 +0200 From: Bernd Walter To: Wilko Bulte Message-ID: <20040830125052.GM59909@cicely12.cicely.de> References: <20040830105358.GH59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <48170.1093864941@critter.freebsd.dk> <20040830113609.GJ59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <20040830114821.GK59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <20040830120901.GA50520@freebie.xs4all.nl> <20040830122945.GL59909@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040830122945.GL59909@cicely12.cicely.de> X-Operating-System: FreeBSD cicely12.cicely.de 5.2-CURRENT alpha User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.9 required=3.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=2.61 X-Spam-Report: * -4.9 BAYES_00 BODY: Bayesian spam probability is 0 to 1% * [score: 0.0000] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.61 (1.212.2.1-2003-12-09-exp) on cicely5.cicely.de cc: Poul-Henning Kamp cc: alpha@freebsd.org cc: ticso@cicely.de Subject: Re: 5.3 beta1 is no go for me. Just checked your picture gallery and the photos show that the bridge including the qlogic is onboard. This raises the question if we really have a pci1. I think the bridge could drive 3 or maybe 4 of the sockets. The bus number 2 is just what SRM left in the bridge registers for the OS and FreeBSD just takes it. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 12:59:55 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 271FC16A4E2 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:59:55 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp-vbr14.xs4all.nl (smtp-vbr14.xs4all.nl [194.109.24.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C59F43D2D for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:59:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (freebie.xs4all.nl [213.84.32.253]) i7UCxrim098398; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:59:53 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.11/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i7UCxroD050779; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:59:53 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: (from wb@localhost) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7UCxqlN050778; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:59:52 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wb) Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 14:59:52 +0200 From: Wilko Bulte To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20040830125952.GA50758@freebie.xs4all.nl> References: <20040830105358.GH59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <48170.1093864941@critter.freebsd.dk> <20040830113609.GJ59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <20040830114821.GK59909@cicely12.cicely.de> <20040830120901.GA50520@freebie.xs4all.nl> <20040830122945.GL59909@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040830122945.GL59909@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-OS: FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE X-PGP: finger wilko@freebsd.org X-Virus-Scanned: by XS4ALL Virus Scanner cc: Poul-Henning Kamp cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 5.3 beta1 is no go for me. This is a 400MHz EV5* machine, I don't recall exactly what model CPU. Higher speed CPUs were EV56, my guess would be that a AS1000A 300Mhz might be a EV5 plain CPU. OK - So the secondary PCI bus is the one behind the bridge and we just have pci0 and pci2, but no pci1. Well - that doesn't really say if the machine check is during ISA probe or while probing a non existent pci1. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 13:50:45 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3492C16A4CF for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 13:50:45 +0000 (GMT) Received: from critter.freebsd.dk (critter.freebsd.dk [212.242.86.163]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E01D43D2F for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 13:50:44 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from phk@critter.freebsd.dk) Received: from critter.freebsd.dk (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by critter.freebsd.dk (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id i7UDocDo050528; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 15:50:38 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from phk@critter.freebsd.dk) To: ticso@cicely.de From: "Poul-Henning Kamp" In-Reply-To: Your message of "Mon, 30 Aug 2004 13:48:22 +0200." <20040830114821.GK59909@cicely12.cicely.de> Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 15:50:38 +0200 Message-ID: <50527.1093873838@critter.freebsd.dk> Sender: phk@critter.freebsd.dk cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 5.3 beta1 is no go for me.
