The packages moved on the FTP site and I forgot to fix the ports.cgi script. This is due to the ports collection Makefiles infrastructure being more complicated now than when the web site CGI scripts was made. Unfortunately there is no simple solution to fix this. Below is a summary of what we talked about. If anything is unclear, please don't hesitate to ask, and I (or hopefully some other BOF attendee) will try to elaborate. This will certainly not something that will happen overnight, and I do expect that there are other people who have comments. EuroBSDCon was a while ago, I just haven't gotten around to actually posting it in public, sorry about that. Personal note: While I still very much think the issues we talked about are important, and are the way to go, I have a few other large FreeBSD related projects that is taking up a lot of my time, so it will be a bit before I have the time to seriously work on the topics presented below... --------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeBSD "Spontaneous" Doc BOF, Saturday evening 2004/10/30 Attending: brueffer, ceri, des, mheinen, ru, simon, trhodes. Note: A more formal doc BOF was scheduled earlier Saturday, but it was announced to late, so not enough people showed up, so it was postponed. The second BOF just happened since we realized that we were at lot of doc people gathered. Discussed: - Changing doc from SGML to XML (yes, really do it this time) - des agreed to make a script for the actual conversion of the files from SGML to XML. - With SGML -> XML conversion we will loose the "IGNORE" functionality from SGML, but it is not widely used, and where such functionality is needed it can e.g. be handled in other ways. This is used to be able to build sub directories in the Handbook, but this has been broken for a while and nobody has complained about that yet... - It was suggested to move chapter files to the main directory e.g. en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11/chapter.sgml -> en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11.sgml, since there does not seem to a big point in all the sub directories, and make does not like the sub directories well.. - Redoing the build system (make files), because it clearly shows its age and several things are broken, e.g. OBJDIR. - To be as little disruptive as possible to normal doc work it was suggested to branch the doc/ tree for the work, and do the work in a separate branch, to be merged into the main branch later again. - Handling multiple FreeBSD release branches (4.X/5.X/6.X) in Handbook to get rid of notes about "For 4.X do....". There should be multiple build Handbook versions on website, and perhaps one complete one with "This section is for 4.X only..." and so on automatically added. - It was suggested to handle this with (SG|X)ML attributes on like done in the release documentation for different architectures. simon was volunteered to implement this. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --=20 Simon L. I see one important thing missing in this list, an important thing for the reader: the merge of the FAQ in the Handbook. I'd put that on top of the list, very important informations are in the FAQ and people often miss them cause they are in another document, etc. Marc --nFreZHaLTZJo0R7j Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFBqj/C81T1MWxkgcoRAjYIAJ42pUPrBg2XTZZIo65jUXEbIAEAPQCghIo3 eXzc8zB0cJMlzDMkJ+Ea3pQ= =zdXC -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nFreZHaLTZJo0R7j-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 28 21:22:18 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3EF1516A4CE; Sun, 28 Nov 2004 21:22:18 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (ns1.freebsdmall.com [69.50.233.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1126643D41; Sun, 28 Nov 2004 21:22:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix, from userid 2074) id D86B41CC80; Sun, 28 Nov 2004 13:28:51 -0800 (PST) Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 13:28:51 -0800 From: Murray Stokely To: "Simon L. What new applications do people have in mind that this enables? Is the plan to phase out DSSSL at this point? The stylesheet work should be more difficult than converting SGML files to XML, but it's not mentioned here. The XSL support is partly broken. > - With SGML -> XML conversion we will loose the "IGNORE" > functionality from SGML, but it is not widely used, and where such > functionality is needed it can e.g. be handled in other ways. > This is used to be able to build sub directories in the Handbook, > but this has been broken for a while and nobody has complained > about that yet... Yes the IGNORE functionality was cool, but it's broken, and it never really worked well because it broke if your chapter included references to other chapters since we never did the olink stuff properly. Moving to XML/XSL will get us closer to the goal that IGNORE was attempting to reach since there are better olink implementations in XSL. > - It was suggested to move chapter files to the main directory e.g. > en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11/chapter.sgml -> > en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11.sgml, since there does not seem > to a big point in all the sub directories, and make does not like > the sub directories well.. You don't need a makefile in each subdirectory since you'll be removing the ability to build only a single chapter, so there is no make consideration here. Directories aren't an issue if you just XInclude the /chapter.xml from the root book.xml, and the directories provide a natural place for the language-specific image files for a given chapter. I don't see any need to remove the directories. At least it seems unrelated to the other goals. These should be questions that answer "what" and "where". - questions that answer "how" should be either a) removed, or b) turned into a crossref into some other file, and the text migrated there. (example: the ppp chapter). Whather that's the Handbook, or e.g. a separate ppp-howto, I don't have an opinion. (Perhaps there are cases where one or the other is appropriate). - anything that's of the form "does XYZ card work" should be a crossref into the release notes. - anything that's of the form "what does terminology X mean" should be a crossref into the Glossary. If the Glossary isn't its own page, it should be. - the bibliography should become its own page. The "best of all possible worlds"? That would be to take the things of the form "I'm having trouble with my XYZ card" and turn them into some kind of knowledge-base thing that would be much more lightweight (e.g. not require DocBook) -- not so much because I or anyone else here is allergice to DocBook, but to lower the 'barrier of entry' so that people who are not on the doc project could contribute to it. This would leave the handbook as a "start here and then do this" and this new, theoretical, resource as the "I'm having a problem" resource. Regardless of this long-term pipe dream, IMHO the above suggestions ought to be considered in the short-to-medium term. Yes, I'll summarize any consensus that arises about the FAQ and put it up on the wiki. mcl From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 29 06:03:26 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D762316A4CE; Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:26 +0000 (GMT) Received: from jc.ngo.org.uk (jc.ngo.org.uk [69.55.225.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0CB3043D46; Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nik@crf-consulting.co.uk) Received: from crf-consulting.co.uk (82-44-220-218.cable.ubr10.haye.blueyonder.co.uk [82.44.220.218]) by jc.ngo.org.uk (8.12.11/8.13.1) with ESMTP id iAT63Oi2027058; Sun, 28 Nov 2004 22:03:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nik@crf-consulting.co.uk) Received: from clan.nothing-going-on.org (clan.nothing-going-on.org [192.168.1.20])iAT63LpQ070918; Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:21 GMT (envelope-from nik@catkin) Received: from clan.nothing-going-on.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) iAT63L2S041770; Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:21 GMT (envelope-from nik@clan.nothing-going-on.org) Received: (from nik@localhost) by clan.nothing-going-on.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id iAT63LpF041769; Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:21 GMT (envelope-from nik) Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2004 06:03:20 +0000 From: Nik Clayton To: "Simon L. In case you're not aware, 'xml' is a supported output FORMAT. You should be able to do make FORMAT=3Dxml in any of the document directories and get book.xml or article.xml generated as appropriate. I strongly recommend that you do this and experiment with getting an XML/XSL toolchain in place *before* doing a full cutover to XML. You are also aware of doc/share/xsl, right? And that you can do: make STYLESHEET_TYPE=3Dxsl ... ? > - It was suggested to move chapter files to the main directory e.g. > en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11/chapter.sgml -> > en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11.sgml, since there does not seem > to a big point in all the sub directories, and make does not like > the sub directories well.. Don't do that. The point of the subdirectories is so that all the files associated with a chapter (images, example files, and so on) are kept together with that chapter. Otherwise you'll end up down the road with filenames like vinum-foo.png vinum-bar.png x11-foo.png x11-bar.png and so on. All you've done is swapped the '/' for a '-'. It also lets you split up the chapter.sgml files in to smaller files, with a single chapter.sgml 'driver' file (in the same way that things like book.sgml include all the chapter.sgml files). > - Redoing the build system (make files), because it clearly shows its > age and several things are broken, e.g. OBJDIR. Makes sense. I'd be happier seeing a comprehensive list of the things that are broken though, so we can measure the replacement and make sure it solves the problems. > - To be as little disruptive as possible to normal doc work it was > suggested to branch the doc/ tree for the work, and do the work in a > separate branch, to be merged into the main branch later again. The DocBook XSL stylesheets call this 'profiling'. See=20 http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/doc/html/rn19.html for more details. All the changes discussed so far will also require updates to the Primer. Who volunteered to keep that up to date? These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Yes please, Perforce seems a natural place for this. Experimenting with things like moving files or entire trees around, creating new files within the branch or other stuff that CVS would make a real PITA, are done easier in Perforce and will not force everyone who keeps CVS mirrors to update a bazillion files while the work is still in progress. Yes, a few of the recent additions (like mirrors.xml) broke parts of the build, and it might be better to just fix those broken commits of the past few years rather than starting from scratch. I think the general bsdmake infrastructure of the doc project is a strong advantage of this doc project over others. I'm aware of few others that allow one to build html/postscript/pdf/text versions of the complete doc set as easily as we can. In my /etc/daily.local I do this: # doc needs special help mv /exports/doc/CVSROOT /exports/doc/CVSROOT-doc su tillman -c '/usr/local/bin/cvsup -g -L1 /usr/local/etc/doc-supfile' mv /exports/doc/CVSROOT-doc /exports/doc/CVSROOT In my ~/dev/freebsd-doc/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook directory, I ran `export CVSROOT=3D/exports/doc` and then `cvs update`. This is a little unlike "regular" source code ... how would I go about troubleshooting this? -T --=20 There is no reality -- only our own order imposed on everything. - Basic Bene Gesserit Dictum From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 30 21:58:27 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D7A716A4CE for ; Tue, 30 Nov 2004 21:58:27 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp.owt.com (smtp.owt.com [204.118.6.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F29FB43D54 for ; Tue, 30 Nov 2004 21:58:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kstewart@owt.com) Received: from [207.41.94.233] (owt-207-41-94-233.owt.com [207.41.94.233]) by smtp.owt.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id iAULvFdP006080; Tue, 30 Nov 2004 13:57:16 -0800 From: Kent Stewart To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 30 Nov 2004 13:58:24 -0800 User-Agent: KMail/1.7.1 References: <20041130214033.GF569@seekingfire.com> In-Reply-To: <20041130214033.GF569@seekingfire.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200411301358.24524.kstewart@owt.com> Subject: Re: doc build failing? About a year (more/less?) ago, Nik and I think Murray were discussing placing FAQ entries into the handbook, at the end of the chapters and filtering them out with some make(1) magic. After reading the BOF comments (compaints more or less) about how we never discussed the FAQ, along with a thread on it from last night; I whipped up the following patch. Here is the gist of what is going on here: Relevent information from the FAQ get's merged into the chapters they should be in. They are added with the WITH_FAQ=yes make variable. If that is no specified, the FAQ portions are not built. Finally, everyone take a section/area of the FAQ and either update and move it to the handbook, or remove it if irrelivent. While I know some things will not go anywhere in the handbook, like the funnies, I propose a different chapter where that stuff can be dropped into. Comments and suggestions are welcome here; NOTE: Simon gets a thank you for a quick hint on the scheme. Again, proof of concept patch, I have only used one FAQ entry here. Lets get the ball rolling and do something rather than bitch about doing something. It can + mean two things: + + + + + A process which is placed inside a set of virtual + walls that are designed to prevent someone who breaks + into the process from being able to break into the wider + system. + + The process is said to be able to + play inside the walls. That is, + nothing the process does in regards to executing code is + supposed to be able to breech the walls so you do not + have to do a detailed audit of its code to be able to + say certain things about its security. + + The walls might be a userid, for example. This is + the definition used in the security and named man + pages. + + Take the ntalk service, for + example (see /etc/inetd.conf). This service used to run + as userid root. Now it runs as userid + tty. The tty user + is a sandbox designed to make it more difficult for + someone who has successfully hacked into the system via + ntalk from being able to hack beyond that user id. + + + + + A process which is placed inside a simulation of the + machine. This is more hard-core. Basically it means that + someone who is able to break into the process may believe + that he can break into the wider machine but is, in fact, + only breaking into a simulation of that machine and not + modifying any real data. + + The most common way to accomplish this is to build a + simulated environment in a subdirectory and then run the + processes in that directory chroot'd (i.e. + / for that process is this + directory, not the real / of the + system). + + Another common use is to mount an underlying + filesystem read-only and then create a filesystem layer + on top of it that gives a process a seemingly writeable + view into that filesystem. The process may believe it is + able to write to those files, but only the process sees + the effects - other processes in the system do not, + necessarily. + + An attempt is made to make this sort of sandbox so + transparent that the user (or hacker) does not realize + that he is sitting in it. + + + + &unix; implements two core sandboxes. One is at the + process level, and one is at the userid level. + + Every &unix; process is completely firewalled off from every + other &unix; process. One process cannot modify the address + space of another. This is unlike &windows; where a process + can easily overwrite the address space of any other, leading + to a crash. + + A &unix; process is owned by a particular userid. If + the userid is not the root user, it + serves to firewall the process off from processes owned by + other users. The userid is also used to firewall off + on-disk data. + + + + +]]> +
