Thanks for that,

the program loads with no problems now.

The thing is, it does not open up port 25, as configured in the config file.
Do most Linux apps work ok with the FreeBSD network layer?

TIA

If you're running an up to date -current, you'll notice that vmware no
longer works properly. I set out to fix that, and ended up making a few
related changes to the port, which require some testing. So, if you use
vmware3, please give this updated port a try and see what happens; I have
only tested it on 5.2-current, so I especially need testers with 4.x
boxes.

(None of the changes are functional, they're all behinds the scenes
changes related to device nodes and such, so vmware will either work or
crash, there will be nothing special to see.)

The updated port is at:

http://www.silby.com/patches/raw/vmware3updatedport.tar.gz

Just untar and built it whereever, nothing special.

Thanks,

Mike "Silby" Silbersack

I haven't personally run vmware3 on 4.x recently, but I believe that it
does work.

You might have stumbled into a conversation where people were talking
about running vmware4, which is _not_ currently support on any version of
FreeBSD.

Hello,

I am trying to create linux emulation layer from slackware-current packages.

All packages work quite okay, but they dump core with signal 12 while
exiting. They do their tasks okay, the core is dumped at the end.

Anyone willing to help me debug this? 4.9-STABLE kernel.

Take care,

Hi,

I'm running StarOffice 7.0 under linux emulation and I get lots of
"linux: pid 13222 (pagein): syscall madvise not implemented"-messages.

I found that 'madvise(3)' *is* implemented in FreeBSD - so why does this
not work? And would it be a great effort to implement this for
linux-emu?

Hi,

I thought the same thing as Stefan, I've tried several times since I saw
the VMWare3 port show up, but never got it to run on 4.x. However, my
copy of VMWare 2 continues to work great.

I'm running -STABLE from Sunday, and did a both-directions-recursive
'portupgrade' at the same time, (with some mopping-up afterwards), so
I've got a fresh copy of linux_base-7.1_7 and all ports are in-sync. I

* downloaded and unpacked the tar.gz,
* built a new kernel with VFS_AIO option (and rebooted)
* set kern.ipc.shm_allow_removed=1,
* pkg_delete'd the VMWare 2 port

and did a 'make install' for your patched port.

(The "uncommited kernel patch" referred to by the Makefile appears to be
already incorporated, but in a different style? In any case, it no
longer applies cleanly.)

I got:

Setting TMPDIR=/var/tmp.

VMware Workstation Error:
Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.
Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.

Press "Enter" to continue...

The 'vmnet1' interface shows up in 'ifconfig', and 'kldstat' shows
vmmon_up as being loaded.

If there's anything I can do to help get this working, let me know.

Cheers,

AS

Ok, I will build vmware3 on my -stable box and see what's wrong.

I was just hoping that it worked and I wouldn't have to test. :)

Ok, I actually setup vmware on my 4.x box and fixed the problem with my
last update. In addition, I fixed a bug which was stopping vmmon from
unloading properly on 5.1+ machines. Please give it a shot and see if it
installs properly for you.

If there are problems, please make sure that you delete
/usr/compat/linux/dev/vmmon
/usr/compat/linux/dev/vmnet1

The port _should_ delete those by default when it installs, but it's
possible that it might not. (And the vmware2 port might recreate them...)

The tarred port is available at:

http://www.silby.com/patches/raw/vmware3update3.tar.gz

Thanks,

Mike "Silby" Silbersack

Weird, it's running on my box as we speak. Full-screen mode causes my
box (or just X, I don't remember) to crash, so I avoid that.

But, it works.

Nate

ps. I haven't had a chance to try your updates yet Mike, but I hope to
find time later today..

I just went ahead and committed the changes I had posted to the list
early today. If you have a working installation of vmware + rtc, there's
no need to update. Here's my commit message, which sums up the changes:

----
A slew of changes to allow vmware3 to work on 5.x with dynamic device
numbering while not breaking 4.x compatibility:

- Stop using device nodes in /usr/compat/linux/dev and instead rely
on the linuxaltor passing though to /dev
- Create needed device nodes in /dev (on 4.x)
- Account for a change in falloc's semantics that was preventing
the vmmon module from being unloaded on 5.1+ machines.
----

Of course, testing would still be appreciated if you have the time. I
tested on 4.9-stable and 5.2-current, but there are many ways in which I
still could have broken the port. :)

Am I correct in surmising that your changes to allow
dynamic device numbering are a prelude to introducing
device cloning?
