There are no other problems - strange kernel or vmware error messages, and the speed of vmware3 and my native bsd programs are excellent. This occurs after vmware3 is installed. Vmware3 does not have to be running for the downstream speed issue to be present. My first reaction is this is unavoidable due to the kernel settings required for vmware to work, but because everything works OK upstream, perhaps I have set something up improperly? The only other thing I noticed was that I can't set debug.mpsafenet=0, as it is readonly. But I do have the kernel option NET_WITH_GIANT compiled. Below are the configuration options I set, and my system information. I appreciate any help! Thanks, - Jonathan 5.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE kernel is GENERIC plus these options: options NET_WITH_GIANT options HZ=1200 /boot/loader.conf (contains only): aio_load="YES" /etc/sysctl.conf (contains only): debug.mpsafenet=0 kern.ipc.shm_allow_removed=1 VMware settings (I'm only using bridged) vmnet1.Bridged = "YES" vmnet1.BridgeInterface = "vr0" vmnet1.HostOnlyAddress = "192.168.0.1" vmnet1.HostOnlyNetMask = "255.255.255.0" * - Speeds measured with bsd programs (outside the VM). Tried both FTP and a Samba connection to a machine that normally gives out data at 7MB/s. ============================== Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project. My question are: - Is FreeBSD 5.3 well tested in order to emulate SCO UNIX? - This system uses a database from Progress Software Corp. v. 8.3, has anyone used/ported it under FreeBSD ? it is safe? - If I port to FreeBSD, the tree structure is the same than SCO? may I have problems or can I solve them? I have no problems (I think) with the users, because they use a W2K application to access the database in the server. My question basically are for the server. If anyone has anything more that can help to me, please... ;-) Thanks in advance Juan Coruña Desarrollo de Software Atlantico From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 21 16:53:57 2004 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B80616A4CE; Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:53:57 +0000 (GMT) Received: from multiplay.co.uk (www1.multiplay.co.uk [212.42.16.7]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7FB843D49; Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:53:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from killing@multiplay.co.uk) Received: from vader ([212.135.219.179]) by multiplay.co.uk (multiplay.co.uk [212.42.16.7]) (MDaemon.PRO.v7.2.1.R) with ESMTP id md50000815610.msg; Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:44:14 +0000 Message-ID: <021101c4e77d$81dae0b0$b3db87d4@multiplay.co.uk> From: "Steven Hartland" <killing@multiplay.co.uk> To: <freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org>, <freebsd-hackers@freebsd.org> Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:52:47 -0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2527 X-Spam-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:44:14 +0000 (not processed: message from valid local sender) X-MDRemoteIP: 212.135.219.179 X-Return-Path: killing@multiplay.co.uk X-MDAV-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:44:16 +0000 Subject: gdb not finding shared libraries for emulated binaries X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems <freebsd-emulation.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-emulation>, <mailto:freebsd-emulation-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-emulation> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-emulation-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-emulation>, <mailto:freebsd-emulation-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:53:57 -0000 Is there a way or a patch to make gdb search the relevant compat directories when debugging a emulated binary. The directory struct is probably fairly different since SCO is a SysV derivative and we're obvioulys BSD based. Is there some particular reason you need to migrate? I see it as totally inappropriate that someone registering with a public list should have an auto responder based in harmless content. I don't want to receive mails from this guy every time I post to the list just because there's something he doesn't like in the sig of my mails especially when I have no control over it. What next responding to mails that include phone numbers? I don't intend to use another account as why should I, I've been on this list for years now and don't see why I should have to change because someone cant get their act together. Totally fair enough for things like this if I was mailing him personally but Im not and hence it is inappropriate in my eyes. Anyway far off topic, discussion closed. When you say "VMware does not have to be running", I assume you mean a virtual machine is not running. VMWare puts your interface in promiscuous mode. IIRC, the interface remains in promiscuous mode even when VMWare is not running (unless you stop disable vmnet or use ifconfig -promisc to disable promiscuous mode on your interface). I'm wondering if for some reason promiscuous mode is affecting your speed. What happens if you exit out of a VMware virtual machine and then run the following command: # /usr/local/etc/rc.d/001.vmware.sh stop Does your performance improve? If not, check to make sure the interface is no longer in promiscuous mode (look for the word "PROMISC" in the first line of output when you run "ifconfig vr0"). You can manually disable promiscuous mode by running the following command: # ifconfig vr0 -promisc What is vr0 plugged into (hub or switch? brand?)? > > My first reaction is this is unavoidable due to the kernel settings > required for vmware to work, but because everything works OK upstream, > perhaps I have set something up improperly? > > The only other thing I noticed was that I can't set debug.mpsafenet=0, > as it is readonly. But I do have the kernel option NET_WITH_GIANT > compiled. How are you trying to change the value of debug.mpsafenet? I don't think you can change it using sysctl from the command line. Since we have to use a software suite only available on windows (AccountView 6.1, based on Visual Foxpro) I have worked it all out using Wine-20040505. Anything after this release is reported to fail, but I have heard rumors that 20041201 is working, albeit by patching the kernel. So, are these rumors true? What should I do to get it running, and what are the consequences? I still have some issues (mostly filesystem-related) wich I hope (but not expect) are better solvable with the new wine. Apart from that: I would like to put AccountView in the wine-AppDb, and it would be nicer to report that it works with recent wine's to... (btw: my email-adres seems bogus, but I use it for lists and lists only... My other mail-adres is strictly for suppliers and clients, so...) Regards, Frans-Jan v.
