I burned a 5.2.1 miniinst ISO date 2/25 and managed to coax EFI into booting it. The CDROM drive is not detected by the kernel, FTP over proxy gets a SIGSEGV, so I used NFS. Most install attempts failed with "device full" errors. I finally manually used an 8 GB /, a 5 GB swap and the rest as /usr (theory is somehow /usr is never being mounted: /etc/fstab error?). There is an EFI partition, probably pre-existing, and I left it alone. This time no errors during install. Now what? EFI seems generally clueless about booting so I assume I have to manually boot the kernel. What do I do to get EFI to load FreeBSD? The disk is a 36GB disk that probably had Windows on it before. There may still be Microsoft contaminants in the EFI partition for all I know. The CDROM drive is not detected because 5.2.1 doesn't have the ACPI update that happened in December. The update fixed bus enumeration that was broken for a while (since 5.1 I think). The snapshot here: ftp://ftp2.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/ia64/ does probe the ATA controller. > Most install attempts failed with "device full" errors. Yes, the loader and kernel should have been installed on the EFI partition. I'm having some difficulties getting FreeBSD 5.2.1 installed on an rx2600. The system boots from the internal DVD mechanism without problems (although I can't use the CDs as install media), and correctly starts a network install. At exactly 85% of the way through the base, sysinstall crashes with the error message: "Fatal Error: Invalid realloc size of 0!". I've tried a few different mirrors and the problem is persistent. Any ideas on what might be going wrong here? The post-5.2.1 snapshot does indeed see the CD drive and let me install, apparently without further incident. However, the system won't boot afterwards; the device isn't listed in the EFI bootable devices table. Is further magic required? The documentation, alas, is somewhat sketchy on this topic. You have to tell it a device can boot and where the boot file is: EFI can't figure that out by itself. You need to Add a Boot Option and find the boot/loader.efi file to select. If you get to the EFI shell prompt try "ls -r fs1:", "ls -r fs2:" etc until you run out of fsN: to try. Here's a segment of what the EFI shell displays at startup: EFI Shell version 1.10 [14.61] Device mapping table fs0 : Acpi(HWP0002,0)/Pci(2|0)/Ata(Primary,Master)/CDROM(Entry0) fs1 : Acpi(HWP0002,100)/Pci(1|1)/Scsi(Pun2,Lun0)/HD(Part1,SigE696C346-032D-11D8-8002-D6217B60E588) Unfortunately, the FreeBSD device is Scsi(Pun0,Lun0) -- do I have to explicitly add it to the device mapping table? > In my case I did something wrong and the relevant files were never > copied to the EFI partition at all, and I copied them manually in a > holographic shell with the CD. Is there documentation somewhere that describes exactly what files need to be copied? I suspect that's my problem, although I've no clue what I did wrong. :) Cheers! /gdm
