I'm in the market for some bullet proof remote administration product (most likely IP KVM but I'm open to other solutions). 99% of all work I can obviously do with ssh but the remaining ones when the server is actually DOWN is were fast fixing is required the most. So what do you people use for remote access to boxes who don't repond anymore? Any pointers to "cheap" IP KVMs (somewhere in the 1000$ range as opposed to the 5000$ one at which point it's probably cheaper to get redundant servers in first place...)? (I know about the serial console and while it certainly has its uses, I'm looking for something *really* bullet proof, enabling me to mess with BIOS etc as well). Good, old fashioned, terminal servers. We have an old Livingston PM2E, and our servers are set up to use the serial console instead of a console. The whole setup was less than $100. And as an added bonus, we now have remote access to our TC 1000 and switch consoles. (This would work well for a Cisco too, but we use FBSD routers instead) There are 2 "gotcha's". This won't work for NT servers, and unless your MB supports truly headless operations, you can't access the machine's boot. (Most SuperMicro Server MB's will support headless operation, as will a lot of the newer 1U servers) When combined with a remote power switch, and NIC's with boot ROM's, this does create a really cost effective remote solution. I have even re-formated and reloaded OS's this way. As far as IP KVM's go, you're much better off getting a good one. I managed some servers for some folks that tried using cheap IP KVM's. Lost time, production and trips to the co-lo quickly made a $1200 IP KVM more expensive than the $5100 Cyclades that eventually replaced it. If you're only working with one remote server, a modem and a headless MB is the only way to go. If you're box doesn't do headless, Cyclades makes a remote management card for about $700 (retail) that will solve the problem, and give you remote power cycling as well. Now if there were dedicated hosting with an ISP actually capable of fixing broken BSD boxes, we might simply outsource hosting but from all I can tell, there ain't. What are you attaching the box too? If you're using a modem, how are you connecting to the modem? We have had some configuration issues with a few modems, (I stronly recomend the USR Courier V Everything for this), but never with a dumb terminal or a portmaster. Also, the IP KVM that gave everyone fits was a Belkin. That's been some time ago. It was a new product line at the time, and would just freeze. It would have to be power cycled. It also had a bad habit of confusing the remote mouse and keyboard. Move the mouse, and garbage filled the screen. Nothing you could do at that point but power cycle the unit. The 8 port Cyclades that took it's place has been working trouble free for over 2 years now, and works with the Sun and AIX box that where installed after I left, as well as the Intel based boxen. The only way to idiot proof hard reboots is to keep idiots away from the controls. Bob Gabriel Ambuehl wrote: > Hello Bob, > > Monday, July 12, 2004, 6:10:01 PM, you wrote: > >>boot. This is the case for _most_ outgoing mail and some incoming. This setup provides performance and control (eg multiple aliases, queues, web management of aliases) that doesn't exist in the MS/Notes space. (Please, no low jokes about 'Notes. We accept that the best thing about it is that it is not Exchange and accordingly we have been very happy not to have become the victim of so many MS vectored virii. Unfortunately, such is the pressure for 'integrated' products that Exchange may be on the way) My employer wants to add disclaimers to outgoing mail and therefore I would like them added by the FreeBSD instance (to avoid mail to Request Tracker etc being polluted with disclaimers) rather than by 'Notes. It seems to me, however, that milters do not allow filtering based on direction of flow (or recipient ne 'internal domain'), so I would be very grateful to hear some suggestions or descriptions of how folks add disclaimers for outgoing mail only. Perhaps two sendmail instances is a possibility ? We are not committed to either the MTA or the design above. We seek a robust, manageable (ie FreeBSD) solution that can be implemented with as little butchery as possible, to either replace or complement the FreeBSD environment above. The approach we seek is proven software; we may be able to tap the mail stream with divert sockets, but quite simply do not have the coding skills to produce a robost result. Thank you, Yours sincerely. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stanley Hopcroft ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 13 09:23:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41B0516A4CE for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 09:23:28 +0000 (GMT) Received: from figg.securenet.com.au (ns2.isecure.com.au [202.125.4.72]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 20E2443D1F for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 09:23:27 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from anwsmh@IPAustralia.Gov.AU) Received: from iron.securenet.com.au (iron.isecure.com.au [202.125.4.94]) i6D9NQi3015497 for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:26 +1000 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by iron.securenet.com.au (8.12.6/8.12.6) id i6D9NPdU006242 for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:25 +1000 (EST) Received: from nodnsquery(10.11.3.10) by iron.securenet.com.au via csmap (V6.0) id srcAAAAwaimm; Tue, 13 Jul 04 19:23:25 +1000 Received: from vmail.aipo.gov.au (localhost [127.0.0.1]) id i6D9NOZX003022 for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:25 +1000 Received: from stan.aipo.gov.au (wf-148.aipo.gov.au [192.168.1.148]) by vmail.aipo.gov.au (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i6D9NOjU033113 for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:24 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from anwsmh@IPAustralia.Gov.AU) Received: from stan.aipo.gov.au (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by stan.aipo.gov.au (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i6D9NPxu000291 for ; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:25 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from anwsmh@IPAustralia.Gov.AU) Received: (from anwsmh@localhost) by stan.aipo.gov.au (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id i6D9NO6e000290 for FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG; Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:24 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from anwsmh@IPAustralia.Gov.AU) X-Authentication-Warning: stan.aipo.gov.au: anwsmh set sender to anwsmh@IPAustralia.Gov.AU using -f Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 19:23:24 +1000 From: Stanley Hopcroft To: FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG Message-ID: <20040713192322.B226@IPAustralia.Gov.AU> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i Subject: Re: Adding disclaimers to outgoing mail only. If a mailinglist for example is called "thelist@some.domain", then the -request address can be inferred from this to be: "thelist-request@some.domain". To subscribe to a mailinglist, simply send a message with the word "subscribe" in the Subject: field to the -request address of that list. To unsubscribe from a mailinglist, simply send a message with the word (you guessed it :-) "unsubscribe" in the Subject: field to the -request address of that list. In the event of an address change, it would probably be the wisest to first send an unsubscribe for the old address (this can be done from the new address), and then a new subscribe to the new address (the order is important). Most (un)subscription requests are processed automatically without human intervention. Do not send multiple (un)subscription or info requests in one mail. Only one will be processed per mail. NOTE: The -request server usually does quite a good job in discriminating between (un)subscribe requests and messages intended for the maintainer. If you'd like to make sure a human reads your message, make it look like a reply (i.e. the first word in the Subject: field should be "Re:", without the quotes of course); the -request server does not react to replies. The archive server ------------------ Every submission sent to this list is archived. The size of the archive depends on the limits set by the list maintainer (it is very well possible that only, say, the last two mails sent to the list are still archived, the rest might have expired). You can look at the header of every mail coming from this list to see under what name it has been archived. The X-Mailing-List: field contains the mailaddress of the list and the file in which this submission was archived. If you want to access this archive, you have to send mails to the -request address with the word "archive" as the first word of your Subject:. To get you started try sending a mail to the -request address with the following: Subject: archive help -- From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 14 07:04:02 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5A9B516A4CE for ; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 07:04:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp2.netcologne.de (smtp2.netcologne.de [194.8.194.218]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F70743D4C for ; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 07:04:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from info@emre.de) Received: from localhost (netmail2.netcologne.de [194.8.194.22]) by smtp2.netcologne.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D530420F for ; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 09:04:00 +0200 (MEST) Received: from sys-125.netcologne.de (sys-125.netcologne.de [194.8.193.125]) by netmail2.netcologne.de (IMP) with HTTP; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 09:03:57 +0200 Message-ID: <1089788637.40f4dadda12ae@netmail2.netcologne.de> Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2004 09:03:57 +0200 From: Emre Bastuz To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org References: <20040713200952.I6269@shell.inch.com> In-Reply-To: <20040713200952.I6269@shell.inch.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: NetCologne NetMail (IMP) 4.0-cvs Subject: Re: php accelerators X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2004 07:04:02 -0000 Hi Charles, Zitat von Charles Sprickman : > Anyone here using any of the free php accellerators? I have created a 64Kbit pipe and I have configured few ips to use the pipe. ie more than one client share the same 64Kbit pipe. I have been montoring the b/w utilization by using the command: ipfw pipe show $inpipe | tail -1 | awk '{ print $6 } ipfw pipe show $outpipe | tail -1 | awk '{ print $6 } This is the output of ipfw pipe show $pipe_no BKT Prot _Source IP/port_ __Dest. IP/port___ Tot_pkt/bytes Pkt/Byte Drp 0 tcp 24.76.245.191/62165 202.79.50.55/4347 2826105 864936484 42 11232 150386 I assumed the 6th field gives the total bytes going though the pipe. These two commands give the bytes going through the pipe and I am using the values to plot the mrtg graph. But I see b/w utilization exceeding 64Kbit. At one point it reached 93Kbit!! Am I using wrong countres to obtain b/w utilization?? please aadvice. with regards, Bikrant From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 15 07:29:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7061616A4D0 for ; Thu, 15 Jul 2004 07:29:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from relay.ceti.pl (relay.ceti.pl [62.121.128.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A0EE43D31 for ; Thu, 15 Jul 2004 07:29:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from miki@ceti.pl) Received: from tau.ceti.pl (tau.ceti.pl [62.121.128.11]) by relay.ceti.pl (Postfix) with ESMTP id 31ACF164137; Thu, 15 Jul 2004 09:29:28 +0200 (CEST) Received: by tau.ceti.pl (Postfix, from userid 1920) id 9F638202FE7; Thu, 15 Jul 2004 09:29:27 +0200 (CEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by tau.ceti.pl (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9ED8B1E70CA; Thu, 15 Jul 2004 09:29:27 +0200 (CEST) Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2004 09:29:27 +0200 (CEST) From: Mikolaj Rydzewski To: "Marc G. Apache 1.3.26 + mod_gzip + php 4.3.4 (or somethig similiar) with various modules compiled in. It's been a while ago, now I'm not using turck-mmcache. There were plenty entries in logile 'httpd (pid) exited with signal ...' when turck.. was active. Only child apache processess segfaulted, main process was still active. So - to the web site user - there was nothing wrong, but apache was dying frequently ;-) Of course problems disappeared after deactivating turck-mmcache. Well, I can give it a try again. -- Mikolaj Rydzewski http://ceti.pl/~miki/ PGP KeyID: 8b12ab02 There are three kinds of people: men, women, and unix.
