Depends entirely on your skill set and how much time you're prepared to invest. Since their is no native port of 1.3 or 1.4 to the Alpha your options are a) Run an x86/sparc/ hardware emulator. Boot an OS on that hardware emulator and run the JDK with it. This should probably work but sounds like it would be pretty slow. b) Port or complete the port of either 1.3 or 1.4 to Alpha. If you know Alpha assembler then the 1.3 port (Classic VM) shouldn't be too hard to complete. 1.4 or 1.3 + HotSpot is going to be a lot of work. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 18 17:28:39 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 670D516A4CF for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2004 17:28:39 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D5CC943D48 for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2004 17:28:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: from emerger.yogotech.com (emerger.yogotech.com [206.127.123.131]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i9IHSHMi008709; Mon, 18 Oct 2004 11:28:17 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by emerger.yogotech.com (8.13.1/8.13.1) id i9IHSHDl078074; Mon, 18 Oct 2004 11:28:17 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate) From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <16755.64816.539642.337565@emerger.yogotech.com> Date: Mon, 18 Oct 2004 11:28:16 -0600 To: Greg Lewis In-Reply-To: <20041018171555.GA22284@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <20041018171555.GA22284@misty.eyesbeyond.com> X-Mailer: VM 7.17 under 21.4 (patch 15) "Security Through Obscurity" XEmacs Lucid cc: Bill.Melvin@esc.edu cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 4 cpu AS4100 w/5.2: Java options? If you know > Alpha assembler then the 1.3 port (Classic VM) shouldn't be too hard > to complete. 1.4 or 1.3 + HotSpot is going to be a lot of work. FWIW, back when Alpha was supported by DEC (the original manufacturer), they lent an Alpha to the FreeBSD project to aid in the porting work. Andrew Gallatin spent some time on the Digital-Unix emulator, and we were able to get the 'native' JDK1.3 binaries that DEC provided running on the Alpha in emulation mode. The results weren't pretty. The Alpha port done by the Digital folks for running on Digitals' version of OSF was virtually useless. My 486/66 ran the same processes 5-10X faster than the 500Mhz Miata box. In the very short time I spent working on it and speaking with the DEC people, apparently doing it quickly required a lot of work, since the JVM internally didn't map well to the Alpha processor. The only hope to make things work faster required doing JIT optimizations similar to what HotSpot does. However, porting HotSpot and/or any other JIT to the Alpha without example code for the emulator is going to be very difficult. Even if you could get the emulator working with the older DEC-provided JDK, I would be hard-pressed to encourage you to work on the project, simply because of the cost/benefit ratio. While the Alpha *was* a great architecture, the performance characteristics for Java simply don't make it a feasible platform for development and/or hosting any sort ofJava application, even one as simple as 'Hello World'. And, it's a no-go as far as support from the vendor, as I don't believe Alpha CPUS are even being made anymore. Using only what was readily available, I built the port on a 4.9 machine, created a package, installed package on the 4.7 machine and get the following error running java: $ /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/bin/java dl failure on line 239Error: failed /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so, because /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so: Undefined symbol "dlinfo" Is this simply a limitation of 4.7-RELEASE? Looking for a quick yes or no before I go through the trouble of creating a 4.7-STABLE server, which is supposedly the minimum for building the jdk14 port, and then trying to install it on the 4.7-RELEASE machine. If you have new diffs for ports for which you have already submitted PRs, the preferred way to do that is just to do a followup to the existing PRs with the new diffs -- this saves some overhead work for us ports committers. The headers have to be a 'certain way' -- see the PR web page for how GNATS insist they be formatted. I'm one of the few ports committers who has Java set up, it seems. I'll try to take a look at them when they come in, but I'm pretty well backed up so no promises :-) mcl From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 19 20:52:04 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EA0016A4CE for ; Tue, 19 Oct 2004 20:52:04 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.corrupt.co.nz (222-152-208-34.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [222.152.208.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id D402943D31 for ; Tue, 19 Oct 2004 20:52:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from drew@corrupt.co.nz) Received: (qmail 77994 invoked by uid 1011); 19 Oct 2004 20:52:18 -0000 Received: from drew@corrupt.co.nz by tweety.lan.corrupt.co.nz by uid 1009 with qmail-scanner-1.22 Clear:RC:0(192.100.53.164):SA:0(-2.8/4.0):. Performance Comparison of Java/.NET Runtimes (Oct 2004) http://www.shudo.net/jit/perf/ Most results are obtained on Linux but they will be interesting to you. The benchmarks on the page are mainly compute intensive and not server-side ones: SPEC JVM98, SciMark 2.0, Linpack benchmark and Eratosthenes sieve. Such benchmark results seem not to be in much demand these days but recently released JDK 5.0 pushed me into doing performance measurement. This time Opteron processor (with 64 bit and 32 bit binaries) was tested in addition to Pentium 4. Another interesting point is .NET Framework, which was tested with simple benchmarks ported to C#. Possibly interesting points are: - C#/.NET performance - Startup process and/or JIT compilation by .NET Framework may be heavier than Java runtimes including HotSpot Server VM. - Throughput of .NET Framework is pretty high. C#/.NET shown higher performance than HotSpot Server VM in Linpack benchmark with large data. - Difference between 64 bit (AMD64) code and 32 bit (x86) code on Opteron - 64 bit code is faster in some benchmarks, and in other benchmarks 32 bit code is faster. - 64 bit code should pay the penalty of larger pointer (reference) and benefit (a little ?) from faster 64 bit integer arithmetic. Well, eclipse 3.0_1 w/ gcc 3.4.2_20040827[0] was built just fine on FreeBSD 4.10-p3. Running it afterwords for a short while (to compare w/ netbeans[1]), all seemed to be fine as well. [0] Before the above mentioned "new port diff" (i think the unmentioned PR is ports/72990); did not have gcc 3.3 listed in the Makefile, so edited it. [1] I liked eclipse much better than netbeans as far as IDE usage go for a non-IDE, Vim using guy. - Parv -- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 22 12:51:30 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2EB2A16A4CE for ; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 12:51:30 +0000 (GMT) Received: from gldis.ca (constans.gldis.ca [66.11.169.73]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7ADD843D58 for ; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 12:51:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gldisater@gldis.ca) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gldis.ca (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i9MCw3gD035730; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 08:58:03 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from gldisater@gldis.ca) From: Jeremy Faulkner To: Parv In-Reply-To: <20041022061849.GA1324@moo.holy.cow> References: <1098358263.982.6.camel@ocean-deep.gldis.ca> <20041022061849.GA1324@moo.holy.cow> Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="=-b6gkcmIeZ8ixIxvTcEjv" Message-Id: <1098435278.982.70.camel@ocean-deep.gldis.ca> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.6 Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 08:54:38 +0000 X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.80rc4/524/Sun Oct 10 11:36:08 2004 clamav-milter version 0.80j on constans.gldis.ca X-Virus-Status: Clean cc: java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Eclipse-3.0.1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 12:51:30 -0000 --=-b6gkcmIeZ8ixIxvTcEjv Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Fri, 2004-10-22 at 06:18, Parv wrote: > in message <1098358263.982.6.camel@ocean-deep.gldis.ca>, > wrote Jeremy Faulkner thusly... > > > > The eclipse port has been updated to use gcc 3.4 could someone > > using 4.x test the new port diff please? >=20 > Well, eclipse 3.0_1 w/ gcc 3.4.2_20040827[0] was built just fine on The updated port is 3.0.1 not 3.0_1, 3.0_1 is the version of the existing port in the ports tree. > FreeBSD 4.10-p3. When I do the 'portupgrade java/eclipse' which has (3.0 or whichever is available currently, I also did 'cvsup /etc/cvsup/ports-supfile immediately prior) the eclipse make bombs out on pthreads, as below. Would that fix the pthreads issue?) Sorry, when I mentioned the eclipse-3.0.1 port diff I was referring to: http://www.gldis.ca/gldisater/freebsd/ports/eclipse.diff I assumed that, because I had posted the url to the list on Tuesday that everyone following this list would already know which diff I was referring to. The diff is also referenced in the PR ports/72990 cd into ports/java/eclipse (or a copy of all the files and directories located there) and enter the command "patch < path/to/eclipse.diff". I don't know about your pthread problem, but eclipse 2.1.3 has not been in the ports tree since the end of July. This patch updates the 3.0_1 port to 3.0.1 (_1 is a revision of the ports tree, .1 is a new eclipse release). --=20 Jeremy Faulkner --=-OOhF1PLwg1RG6e38/nra Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBBeTSufb0Lle2MIEIRAnw0AJ0cA3X0VcMPRlpPL5b5jOMO4MFBYACfXmZn yPzekprbBviBA+VLuQXbf9w= =pwHr -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-OOhF1PLwg1RG6e38/nra-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 22 23:10:00 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B3D7C16A4CE; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 23:10:00 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9312943D60; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 23:10:00 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from simon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (simon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i9MNA0M3004094; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 23:10:00 GMT (envelope-from simon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from simon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i9MNA0iX004090; Fri, 22 Oct 2004 23:10:00 GMT (envelope-from simon) Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 23:10:00 GMT From: "Simon L.
