After approximately three hours in the build process I came across the
following error message:

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM warning: Can't detect initial thread stack location

Anyone have an idea why this error was generated and how I should
proceed?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the first (bogus) line of
/usr/ports/java/jdk14/work/control/build/bsd-i586/gensrc/java/util/CurrencyData.java
and start the build again. Its a problem with the Linux emulation layer.

I would like to run Java on zis ere Alpha 4100 w/a fresh build of
RELENG_5_2.

I note that most of the jdk ports are marked ONLY_FOR_ARCHS = i386.

Googling and list crawling indicates this may be quite difficult to do.

What are the current options for running/building/installing a 1.[34] JDK
on
an Alpha running 5.2?

tnx,

/b

Depends entirely on your skill set and how much time you're prepared to
invest.

Since their is no native port of 1.3 or 1.4 to the Alpha your options
are

a) Run an x86/sparc/<other supported platform> hardware emulator. Boot
an OS on that hardware emulator and run the JDK with it. This should
probably work but sounds like it would be pretty slow.

b) Port or complete the port of either 1.3 or 1.4 to Alpha. If you know
Alpha assembler then the 1.3 port (Classic VM) shouldn't be too hard
to complete. 1.4 or 1.3 + HotSpot is going to be a lot of work.

FWIW, back when Alpha was supported by DEC (the original manufacturer),
they lent an Alpha to the FreeBSD project to aid in the porting work.
Andrew Gallatin spent some time on the Digital-Unix emulator, and we
were able to get the 'native' JDK1.3 binaries that DEC provided running
on the Alpha in emulation mode.

The results weren't pretty. The Alpha port done by the Digital folks
for running on Digitals' version of OSF was virtually useless. My
486/66 ran the same processes 5-10X faster than the 500Mhz Miata box.

In the very short time I spent working on it and speaking with the DEC
people, apparently doing it quickly required a lot of work, since the
JVM internally didn't map well to the Alpha processor. The only hope to
make things work faster required doing JIT optimizations similar to what
HotSpot does. However, porting HotSpot and/or any other JIT to the
Alpha without example code for the emulator is going to be very
difficult.

Even if you could get the emulator working with the older DEC-provided
JDK, I would be hard-pressed to encourage you to work on the project,
simply because of the cost/benefit ratio.

While the Alpha *was* a great architecture, the performance
characteristics for Java simply don't make it a feasible platform for
development and/or hosting any sort ofJava application, even one as
simple as 'Hello World'. And, it's a no-go as far as support from the
vendor, as I don't believe Alpha CPUS are even being made anymore.

I directed this to znerd, listed as the port's maintainer and he wrote
back suggesting that I redirect this to java@freebsd.org

I haven't seen any mention of this looking through pr's, so I don't know
if I'm the only one with the issue or not. (I also checked FreeBSD
forums and googlegroups, but have seen nothing. Therefore, I am
reluctant to file a pr as it might be something that only I am
experiencing.)

Therefore, I thought I would start by writing to you. =20
The problem is that the current linux-blackdown-jdk14 crashes
linux-opera. The older Makefile still works. (from 2003/07/11)
This is running FreeBSD-5.3BETA7, fluxbox, the most current version of
linux-opera and the most current version of linux-blackdown-jdk14. If I
try to go to a webpage using java, opera crashes. Upon leaving X I see
the message

Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

I am not sure what the next step would be, or, indeed if it's just my
problem.

I have a copy of the older Makefile if it's of any use. If I=20
deinstall the current port, and use the old Makefile, it works without
any problem.

I'm sorry for the lack of information. I don't have the time to test it
with a number of different window managers, although I have a test box
at work that I can use. (I actually need java for some work-related
things so at present, on this box at home I have the older, working
version installed. However, if you need some tests run, I can slap it
on another box)

Thank you for your time and trouble

Most sincerely,

Hi All,

I'm in a pinch and am wondering if it's possible to build a native JDK
1.4.x for FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE-p27. Using only what was readily
available, I built the port on a 4.9 machine, created a package,
installed package on the 4.7 machine and get the following error running
java:

$ /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/bin/java dl failure on line 239Error: failed
/usr/local/jdk1.4.2/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so, because
/usr/local/jdk1.4.2/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so: Undefined symbol "dlinfo"

Is this simply a limitation of 4.7-RELEASE? Looking for a quick yes or
no before I go through the trouble of creating a 4.7-STABLE server,
which is supposedly the minimum for building the jdk14 port, and then
trying to install it on the 4.7-RELEASE machine.

Thanks,

Tom Duffey

I have been attempting update the eclipse, eclipse-emf, eclipse-gef,
eclipse-vep ports. The eclipse update includes the patch des@ posted
several months ago that no one seemed interested in committing. The
eclipse diff also satisfies ports/72475. I'd appreciate testing and
comments. I have not yet tested the motif port of eclipse, but I do not
expect any problems. The pkg-plist for the new eclipse has not been
verified yet.=20

The diffs can be found at: www.gldis.ca/gldisater/freebsd/ports

I (prematurely) created pr's for the emf and vep updates (ports/72802,
misc/72803), the diffs may no longer match the reported md5. If there
aren't any reported problems with the posted diffs by Friday I will open
prs for the all of the diffs.

If you have new diffs for ports for which you have already submitted
PRs, the preferred way to do that is just to do a followup to the
existing PRs with the new diffs -- this saves some overhead work for
us ports committers. The headers have to be a 'certain way' -- see
the PR web page for how GNATS insist they be formatted.

I'm one of the few ports committers who has Java set up, it seems.
I'll try to take a look at them when they come in, but I'm pretty
well backed up so no promises :-)

When I built eclipse with GTK I get the following error, but with WITH_MOTIF=yes it runs perfectly
fine.

I have tried the latest patched ports Makefile for 3.0.1 and receive the same problem,

I am running FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE p11, XFree86 4.4.0, Windowsmaker 0.80.1

While building java/eclipse port error occurs ...

  $ make build -DBATCH -DWITHOUT_GNOMEVFS -DWITH_MOTIF
  #
"Makefile", line 75: Malformed conditional (empty(${BUILD_KDE}))
"Makefile", line 75: Missing dependency operator
  "Makefile", line 80: if-less endif
"Makefile", line 80: Need an operator
make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
  ... done build in /misc/ports/java/eclipse

...but the minimum command to make above errors happen seem to be
(for that matter, change BUILD_KDE to any other variable) ...

  make -V BUILD_KDE -DWITH_MOTIF

Some versions...

  FreeBSD (running) 4.10-RELEASE-p3
  Eclipse (trying to install) 1.23 2004/07/28 17:56:31 (from $FreeBSD ...$)
  GCC (port installed) 3.4.2_20040827

How can i resolve the errors (on FreeBSD 4.x)?

I wanted to try and fix this without symlinking, but it was a quick fix:
Drew Broadley <drew@corrupt.co.nz>

------------
#!/bin/sh

cd /usr/local/bin
ln -s libgmodule-2.0.so libgmodule-2.0.so.200
ln -s libgmodule-2.0.so.400 libgmodule-2.0.so.200
ln -s libglib-2.0.so.400 libglib-2.0.so.200
ln -s libgthread-2.0.so.400 libgthread-2.0.so.200
-------------

This script fixed my problems and got eclipse working.

Greg, the build was sucessful and the Java Plug-in 1.4.2 now appears in the
list of "Installed Plug-ins".

Thanks again for your help.

I have updated a web page showing results of performance measurement of
various Java runtimes.

Performance Comparison of Java/.NET Runtimes (Oct 2004)
  http://www.shudo.net/jit/perf/

Most results are obtained on Linux but they will be interesting to
you.

The benchmarks on the page are mainly compute intensive and not
server-side ones: SPEC JVM98, SciMark 2.0, Linpack benchmark and
Eratosthenes sieve. Such benchmark results seem not to be in much
demand these days but recently released JDK 5.0 pushed me into doing
performance measurement.

This time Opteron processor (with 64 bit and 32 bit binaries) was
tested in addition to Pentium 4. Another interesting point is .NET
Framework, which was tested with simple benchmarks ported to C#.

Possibly interesting points are:

  - C#/.NET performance

    - Startup process and/or JIT compilation by .NET Framework may be
heavier than Java runtimes including HotSpot Server VM.

    - Throughput of .NET Framework is pretty high.
C#/.NET shown higher performance than HotSpot Server VM
in Linpack benchmark with large data.

  - Difference between 64 bit (AMD64) code and 32 bit (x86) code on Opteron

    - 64 bit code is faster in some benchmarks, and in other
benchmarks 32 bit code is faster.

    - 64 bit code should pay the penalty of larger pointer (reference)
and benefit (a little ?) from faster 64 bit integer arithmetic.

Hope you enjoy,

  Kazuyuki Shudo	shudo@computer.org	http://www.shudo.net/

It seems to me that this problem mostly occurs when linprocfs is not
mounted.

I've just uploaded an update to the eclipse-cdt port as well as a new
port for eclipse-uml.

www.gldis.ca/gldisater/freebsd/ports/

All of the ports that I have updated recently (gef, vep, emf) as well as
these new ports all require the updated eclipse-3.0.1 port. These two
ports (cdt and uml) will have PRs on Tuesday, any feedback on these
ports is welcome.

Well, eclipse 3.0_1 w/ gcc 3.4.2_20040827[0] was built just fine on
FreeBSD 4.10-p3. Running it afterwords for a short while (to
compare w/ netbeans[1]), all seemed to be fine as well.

[0] Before the above mentioned "new port diff" (i think the
unmentioned PR is ports/72990); did not have gcc 3.3 listed in
      the Makefile, so edited it.

[1] I liked eclipse much better than netbeans as far as IDE usage
go for a non-IDE, Vim using guy.

The updated port is 3.0.1 not 3.0_1, 3.0_1 is the version of the
existing port in the ports tree.

I do not believe that you tested the diff, just the regular port.

Thank you for testing the port, since 3.0 compiled with 3.4 just fine I
don't expect 3.0.1 to have any problems.

When I do the 'portupgrade java/eclipse' which has
(3.0 or whichever is available currently, I also did
'cvsup /etc/cvsup/ports-supfile immediately prior)
the eclipse make bombs out on pthreads, as below.

Also, in reinstalling 2.1.3, it bombs out on a gettext
lib incompatibility, 2nd snippet.

So I guess I'm fubar at this point?

(I gather that you wanted testing on the "port diff"
as opposed to the port, but I don't know how to get
access to that. Would that fix the pthreads issue?)

Sorry, when I mentioned the eclipse-3.0.1 port diff I was referring to:
http://www.gldis.ca/gldisater/freebsd/ports/eclipse.diff

I assumed that, because I had posted the url to the list on Tuesday that
everyone following this list would already know which diff I was
referring to.

The diff is also referenced in the PR ports/72990

cd into ports/java/eclipse (or a copy of all the files and directories
located there) and enter the command "patch < path/to/eclipse.diff".

I don't know about your pthread problem, but eclipse 2.1.3 has not been
in the ports tree since the end of July. This patch updates the 3.0_1
port to 3.0.1 (_1 is a revision of the ports tree, .1 is a new eclipse
release).

pkg-plist corrected for gtk build, updated md5:
 MD5 (eclipse.diff) = c96ff2e04a3d3bea522b9fb82a8e71e1

pkg-plist still needs work on the motif plist, the libswt files differ
from those produced for the gtk build.
