The machine is running CUPS as print service, I tried to add /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin to my PATH, bypass the wrapper, copied lp*-binaries to other directories... nothing worked. Searching via google showed other users with this problem but no solution. Does anyone know how/if this problem could be solved? This could be an excellent opportunity for more closely aligning the FreeBSD JDK patchset release with the official one. Provided volunteers donate their time, of course :-) On another note, perhaps the distribution of JDK 5.0/6.0 patchsets should be subject to the new Java Research License? It seems more open source-friendly, not to mention shorter :-) Distribution of diablo binaries shall remain a responsibility for the FreeBSD Foundation's legal negotiations, of course. Its not clear to me if the JRL grants the same thing. IANAL, but the definition of 'Research Use' in the JRL doesn't seem to include unqualified personal and individual use like the SCSL does. If this is the case, I think the SCSL may be the better license for the patchsets. -Kurt From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 16 17:06:46 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 20DC816A4D0; Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:46 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F34FB43D1D; Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:45 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nork@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (nork@localhost [127.0.0.1]) iAGH6jcf029955; Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:45 GMT (envelope-from nork@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from nork@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id iAGH6jnt029951; Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:45 GMT (envelope-from nork) Date: Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:45 GMT From: Norikatsu Shigemura Message-Id: <200411161706.iAGH6jnt029951@freefall.freebsd.org> To: gldisater@gldis.ca, nork@FreeBSD.org, java@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/73994: [PATCH] java/eclipse/files/make_gtk.mak - remove an unnecessary if statement X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 16 Nov 2004 17:06:46 -0000 Synopsis: [PATCH] java/eclipse/files/make_gtk.mak - remove an unnecessary if statement State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: nork State-Changed-When: Tue Nov 16 17:06:38 GMT 2004 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks! http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=73994 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 17 00:57:41 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD3A816A4CE for ; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 00:57:41 +0000 (GMT) Received: from palle.girgensohn.se (1-2-8-5a.asp.sth.bostream.se [82.182.157.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 576FF43D3F for ; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 00:57:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from girgen@pingpong.net) Received: from localhost (localhost.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) by palle.girgensohn.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 964FC1CC1C; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 01:57:44 +0100 (CET) Received: from palle.girgensohn.se ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (palle.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 04346-03; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 01:57:44 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost.girgensohn.se (localhost.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) by palle.girgensohn.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2925F1CC0B; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 01:57:43 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 01:57:43 +0100 From: Palle Girgensohn To: Ian Grigg , Pawel Worach Message-ID: <983D763530B95ACD8E418A06@palle.girgensohn.se> In-Reply-To: <4180DD57.9060100@systemics.com> References: <417ECD08.8010805@systemics.com> <417F6596.8050808@telia.com> <4180DD57.9060100@systemics.com> X-Mailer: Mulberry/3.1.6 (Linux/x86) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at pingpong.net cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Crypto takes 17 seconds to wind up for the throw... Kinda late to feed back on this, but I ran into a similar problem a while back, and it was fixed by setting up rndcontrol(8) to get a good pool of entropy. Set something like: rand_irqs="5 10" in /etc/rc.conf. The IRQs should of course be some where there is some action. check the rndcontrol manpage... The stuff you describe below is not quite like my problem, so you are probably not helped by this, but maybe it's worth a try. Crypto stuff need good random numbers, and without stirring the entropy pool, it seem Java sometimes just sit and wait for them, kinda... Below is a quick report on why Cipher.getCipher() takes too long. > Kinda late to feed back on this, but I ran into a similar problem a while back, and it was fixed by setting up rndcontrol(8) to get a good pool of entropy. Set something like: > > rand_irqs="5 10" > > in /etc/rc.conf. The IRQs should of course be some where there is some action. check the rndcontrol manpage... Actually I ran into that last month in a different circumstance, where unless the rand_irqs has some irqs, it just blocks totally. > The stuff you describe below is not quite like my problem, so you are probably not helped by this, but maybe it's worth a try... I'm conscious of promising more feedback on this, even a detailed report which I should bug report to Sun. (But I ran out of time and also my thunderbird was totally hosed, as were other KDE/gnome areas so I'm limping at the moment. I guess I just have to upgrade from 4.9 to 5.3 when it gets into release.) Anyway, this is the problem: The JCE goes out to the network stack and asks some mindless question like what host am I. If the machine is misconfigured, the question doesn't come back for 17 seconds or so while the network goes through some sort of try/this/timeout scenario. As soon as the network is properly configured, then it pops back such that the entire process takes about a second. Doing stack dumps or whathaveyou confirms that 98% of the time is spent blocking on some network call. Of course it is totally unacceptable for crypto code to be dependent on the network, and introduces all sorts of questions and potential security holes. But, the JCE is that, in a nutshell; not something that was put together for security ... Why the JCE has decided to go out to the network is open to speculation. I've thought of several reasons; One is that it is an artifact of random x.509 cert usage in checking the signatures on the libraries. Another is that the certs have OCSP enabled, and do a freshness check. Third, it is doing some sort of passive check on IP numbers related to its policy. Fourth, it's reporting in to Virginia... In order of likelihood ;) The problem is that this sort of heavy weight administration lumped on top of a bunch of what should be slightly sophisticated maths methods is becoming more and more OTT as time goes on. First we had the JCE itself, then we had the difficult-to-bypass API, those silly but hard to find "policy files", then the signed providers and now we have checks on the network. It doesn't take a cryptographer to realise that this is adding insecurity at all levels and the solution is to get back to the basic maths. Anyway, enough whinging. iang From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 17 22:59:52 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 02A4516A4CE for ; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 22:59:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: from palle.girgensohn.se (1-2-8-5a.asp.sth.bostream.se [82.182.157.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6CCE43D45 for ; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 22:59:50 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from girgen@pingpong.net) Received: from localhost (localhost.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) by palle.girgensohn.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 36E8C1CC37; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 23:59:56 +0100 (CET) Received: from palle.girgensohn.se ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (palle.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 37731-06; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 23:59:56 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost.girgensohn.se (localhost.girgensohn.se [127.0.0.1]) by palle.girgensohn.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id A7FDB1CC0B; Wed, 17 Nov 2004 23:59:55 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 23:59:55 +0100 From: Palle Girgensohn To: iang@iang.org Message-ID: <7B7815A4626D18619161190E@palle.girgensohn.se> In-Reply-To: <1887.82.70.142.134.1100716373.squirrel@82.70.142.134> References: <417ECD08.8010805@systemics.com> <417F6596.8050808@telia.com> <4180DD57.9060100@systemics.com> <983D763530B95ACD8E418A06@palle.girgensohn.se> <1887.82.70.142.134.1100716373.squirrel@82.70.142.134> X-Mailer: Mulberry/3.1.6 (Linux/x86) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at pingpong.net cc: Ian Grigg cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Crypto takes 17 seconds to wind up for the throw... Or is javavm not very fast? > Wouldn't it be nice to have javavm create symlinks to the right > executables without runtime checking etc/javavms every time? The main idea here is to be able to dynamically select a suitable JVM according to the JDK version, vendor, and OS that are (possibly) required and specified via environement variables. This forbids the use of symlinks to the executables of one single JDK. If you need this kind of feature, I think it is even more efficient to add $JAVA_HOME/bin in front of $PATH... BTW, using the same logic as within the current javavm script, maybe we could provide a script that some user could "source" to add the required JDK's $JAVA_HOME/bin in front of $PATH. Or maybe just something to echo this $JAVA_HOME according to the same JAVA_VERSION, JAVA_OS and JAVA_VENDOR variables. OTOH, I would personally prefer to see people use the current flavour of javavmwrapper, unless of course we can't find a fix for the performance loss you speak of. Yes. in 5.3, named chroots to /var/named; the init script for it mounts a devfs under /var/named/dev (with devfs rules to restrict the devices that appear) so that named gets a /dev/random and /dev/null. -- Mike Bristow - http://www.urgle.com/~mike/ - mike@urgle.com What is at sea in a dustbin? I get a Dialog "New Wizard - Generic VCS". The Dialog contains a "Version Control System Profile" ComboBox. However, that ComboBox only contains one Entry: ""; there's no CVS or anything else there. Here is a workaround: - extract 'org/netbeans/modules/vcs/profiles/cvsprofiles/config/cvs.xml' from 'netbeans/modules/cvs-profile.jar' - edit cvs.xml, changing this (it's at the start of the file): "Unix", "Windows" to this: "FreeBSD", "Unix", "Windows" - copy the resulting cvs.xml to '~/.netbeans/3.6/system/vcs/config/cvs.xml' or (system wide) 'netbeans/system/vcs/config/cvs.xml' (maybe you'll have to create the directories). - (re)start Netbeans Then you'll have a CVS profile to chose when mounting a VCS filesystem. Dunno how the OS identification is done, but (obviously?) FreeBSD is not identified as "Unix". -- (null) From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Nov 20 09:59:36 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A56FE16A4CE for ; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 09:59:36 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.gmx.net (pop.gmx.de [213.165.64.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id BCC0543D2F for ; Sat, 20 Nov 2004 09:59:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ralf.folkerts@gmx.de) Received: (qmail 3470 invoked by uid 65534); 20 Nov 2004 09:59:34 -0000 Received: from p5083485B.dip0.t-ipconnect.de (EHLO beaster) (80.131.72.91) by mail.gmx.net (mp018) with SMTP; 20 Nov 2004 10:59:34 +0100 X-Authenticated: #18511927 From: Ralf Folkerts To: Gustavo De Nardin In-Reply-To: <50af0a26041119135961187bda@mail.gmail.com> References: <1100885758.9088.23.camel@beaster> <50af0a26041119135961187bda@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="=-5Lfs+olSR/14oY0QswHe" Organization: Wohnzimmerrechenzentrum Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 10:59:28 +0100 Message-Id: <1100944768.689.13.camel@beaster> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.0.2 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: No CVS in NetBeans...
