Hi all,

whenever I try to print something from a java-application (e.g. jedit), I
get the following message:

	"No print service found."

The machine is running CUPS as print service, I tried to add
/usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin to my PATH, bypass the wrapper, copied
lp*-binaries to other directories... nothing worked. Searching via google
showed other users with this problem but no solution.

Does anyone know how/if this problem could be solved?

Thank you,
Uwe

I got a problem compiling JDK14 on FreeBSD, I copied
/usr/ports/java/jdk14 to /home because I had too less free hard disc
space on / I recently cvsup'ed the ports tree so I'll include a list of
installed ports/packages too. The last time I compiled it on my system
everything went fine.

I hope someone can help

Frank

  find /home/jdk -name stubCodeGenerator.o -ls

  If a 0-sized file is found, remove it, else, remove all files named
'stubCodeGenerator.o'. Then try building the port again.

Check out:
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/mreinhold/archive/2004/11/mustang_snapsho.html

It seems that Sun is going to offer periodic snapshots of their next JDK
source code. This could be an excellent opportunity for more closely
aligning the FreeBSD JDK patchset release with the official one.

Provided volunteers donate their time, of course :-)

On another note, perhaps the distribution of JDK 5.0/6.0 patchsets
should be subject to the new Java Research License? It seems more open
source-friendly, not to mention shorter :-)

Distribution of diablo binaries shall remain a responsibility for the
FreeBSD Foundation's legal negotiations, of course.

Cheers,
Panagiotis

The SCSL allows for "personal and individual use" of the JDK
binaries in the 'Research Use License' via the 'Research Use' definition.
Its not clear to me if the JRL grants the same thing. IANAL, but the
definition of 'Research Use' in the JRL doesn't seem to include unqualified
personal and individual use like the SCSL does. If this is the case, I think
the SCSL may be the better license for the patchsets.

Hi!

Kinda late to feed back on this, but I ran into a similar problem a while
back, and it was fixed by setting up rndcontrol(8) to get a good pool of
entropy. Set something like:

rand_irqs="5 10"

in /etc/rc.conf. The IRQs should of course be some where there is some
action. check the rndcontrol manpage...

The stuff you describe below is not quite like my problem, so you are
probably not helped by this, but maybe it's worth a try. Crypto stuff need
good random numbers, and without stirring the entropy pool, it seem Java
sometimes just sit and wait for them, kinda...

Cheers,
Palle

Palle,

Thanks for that! Below is a quick report on why
Cipher.getCipher() takes too long.

> Kinda late to feed back on this, but I ran into a similar problem a
while back, and it was fixed by setting up rndcontrol(8) to get a good
pool of entropy. Set something like:
>
> rand_irqs="5 10"
>
> in /etc/rc.conf. The IRQs should of course be some where there is some
action. check the rndcontrol manpage...

Actually I ran into that
last month in a different circumstance, where unless
the rand_irqs has some irqs, it just blocks totally.

> The stuff you describe below is not quite like my problem, so you are
probably not helped by this, but maybe it's worth a try...

I'm conscious of promising more feedback on
this, even a detailed report which I should bug report
to Sun. (But I ran out of time and also my thunderbird
was totally hosed, as were other KDE/gnome areas so
I'm limping at the moment. I guess I just have to
upgrade from 4.9 to 5.3 when it gets into release.)

Anyway, this is the problem: The JCE goes out to the
network stack and asks some mindless question like what
host am I. If the machine is misconfigured, the question
doesn't come back for 17 seconds or so while the network
goes through some sort of try/this/timeout scenario. As
soon as the network is properly configured, then it pops
back such that the entire process takes about a second.
Doing stack dumps or whathaveyou confirms that 98% of the
time is spent blocking on some network call.

Of course it is totally unacceptable for crypto code
to be dependent on the network, and introduces all sorts
of questions and potential security holes. But, the JCE
is that, in a nutshell; not something that was put
together for security ...

Why the JCE has decided to go out to the network is open
to speculation. I've thought of several reasons; One is
that it is an artifact of random x.509 cert usage in checking
the signatures on the libraries. Another is that the
certs have OCSP enabled, and do a freshness check. Third,
it is doing some sort of passive check on IP numbers
related to its policy. Fourth, it's reporting in to
Virginia...

In order of likelihood ;) The problem is that this sort of
heavy weight administration lumped on top of a bunch of
what should be slightly sophisticated maths methods is
becoming more and more OTT as time goes on. First we had
the JCE itself, then we had the difficult-to-bypass API,
those silly but hard to find "policy files", then the
signed providers and now we have checks on the network.

It doesn't take a cryptographer to realise that this is
adding insecurity at all levels and the solution is to
get back to the basic maths.

Anyway, enough whinging.

iang

5.3 is out, btw.

Hello,

I tried javavmwrapper, because the concept with the symlinks in
/usr/local/bin sounds nice.
But it makes it very slow now

I have this test program of 3 lines.
#! /bin/sh

for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0; do $1 -version; done

And call it like this.
time ./jvmtest.sh /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/bin/java
real    0m7.847s
user    0m6.085s
sys     0m1.055s

And like this.
time ./jvmtest.sh /usr/local/bin/java
real    0m45.763s
user    0m19.226s
sys     0m22.745s

The symlinks I have are these.
ls -l /usr/local/bin/ja*
/usr/local/bin/jar@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/jarsigner@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/java@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/java-rmi.cgi@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/java_vm@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/javac@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/javadoc@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/javah@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/javap@ -> /usr/local/bin/javavm
/usr/local/bin/javavm*

Do I forget something? Or is javavm not very fast?
Wouldn't it be nice to have javavm create symlinks to the right
executables without runtime checking etc/javavms every time?

Ronald.

At home, I have:

time ./jvmtest.sh /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/bin/java
real    0m1.535s
user    0m1.144s
sys     0m0.220s

time ./javatest.sh /usr/local/bin/java
real    0m1.632s
user    0m1.224s
sys     0m0.209s

Not much of a difference on my system:

FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE #1: Tue Nov 16 19:54:30 CET 2004
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz (1998.19-MHz 686-class CPU)
real memory  = 536805376 (511 MB)

However, it would be nice to see if yours being slow is due to some
side-effect from javavmwrapper with a particular configuration.

The main idea here is to be able to dynamically select a suitable JVM
according to the JDK version, vendor, and OS that are (possibly)
required and specified via environement variables. This forbids the use
of symlinks to the executables of one single JDK.

If you need this kind of feature, I think it is even more efficient to
add $JAVA_HOME/bin in front of $PATH... BTW, using the same logic as
within the current javavm script, maybe we could provide a script that
some user could "source" to add the required JDK's $JAVA_HOME/bin in
front of $PATH. Or maybe just something to echo this $JAVA_HOME
according to the same JAVA_VERSION, JAVA_OS and JAVA_VENDOR variables.
OTOH, I would personally prefer to see people use the current flavour of
javavmwrapper, unless of course we can't find a fix for the performance
loss you speak of.

Hiya

Just been trying to portinstall the native jdk1.4 under a clean 5.3
installation.

I've got linprocfs mounted:

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ad0s1a    253678   199806    33578    86%    /
devfs               1        1        0   100%    /dev
/dev/ad0s1f    253678      492   232892     0%    /tmp
/dev/ad0s1g  19937126 10676466  7665690    58%    /usr
/dev/ad0s1e    253678    42242   191142    18%    /var
/dev/ad0s1h  41288828 18496392 19489330    49%    /exports/music
/dev/ad0s1d  52567378 44547686  3814302    92%    /exports/public
devfs               1        1        0   100%    /var/named/dev
linprocfs           4        4        0   100%    /usr/compat/linux/proc

I've got the linuxprocfs module loaded:

Id Refs Address    Size     Name
 1    7 0xc0400000 3b3718   kernel
 2   14 0xc07b4000 537f0    acpi.ko
 3    1 0xc1749000 5000     linprocfs.ko

But when the build gets to jdk1.4 I just get a hang, with a 'java' process
taking up all my cpu:

===>  Building for jdk-1.4.2p6_6
# Start of jdk build
bsd i586 1.4.2-p6 build started: 04-11-19 10:36
if [ -r ./../../deploy/make/Makefile ]; then \
  ( cd  ./../../deploy/make; gmake sanity EXTERNALSANITYCONTROL=true
CONTROL_TOPDIR=/usr/ports/java/jdk14/work/control
CONTROL_TOPDIR_NAME=control
ALT_OUTPUTDIR=/usr/ports/java/jdk14/work/control/build/bsd-i586
ARCH_DATA_MODEL=32 MILESTONE=p6 BUILD_NUMBER=jon_19_nov_2004_10_36 ; ); \
fi

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? I've seen similar problems
reported before, but unfortunately no solutions :-(

Cheers,

--Jon

Oooppss...

What the funk is
devfs               1        1        0   100%    /var/named/dev
????

Where is your *freebsd* /proc ???
it should be like
procfs on /proc (procfs, local)

Also do a
/usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.2/bin/java -version
/usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.2/bin/java -server -version

As far as I know, devfs is a smarter replacement for the old /dev
directory.

Yes.

in 5.3, named chroots to /var/named; the init script for it mounts a
devfs under /var/named/dev (with devfs rules to restrict the devices
that appear) so that named gets a /dev/random and /dev/null.

BIND is run in a sandbox in 5.3. Have a look at 'named_chrootdir=' in
/etc/defaults/rc.conf, and /etc/rc.d/named.

It seems /proc isn't mounted by default on 5.x for security reasons.

I'm guessing you haven't used 5.x :-)

If you mean: 'is it a clean install?', then the answer is yes.
If you mean: 'have I ever installed FreeBSD before?', then the answer
is yes, I've been using it since around 2.2.8 (I used NetBSD before that).

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Hi,

I have a severe Problem with NetBeans 3.6 on FreeBSD (installed from
Port, using the FreeBSD-JDK 1.4.2):

I cannot mount a Version Controlled (in my case it's CVS) Directory:

I go to "Filesystem", RMB, then select "Mount" -> "Version Control". I
get a Dialog "New Wizard - Generic VCS". The Dialog contains a "Version
Control System Profile" ComboBox. However, that ComboBox only contains
one Entry: "<Select a Profile>"; there's no CVS or anything else there.

When I got to "Tools" / "Options" / "Source Creation and Management" /
"Version Control Settings" / "Generic Vcs Profiles" I see: "VSS" "empty"
"CVS" "PVCS".=20

I also checked the IDE.log to see if there are any Problem relating VCS;
but I didn't see any. I enclosed the ide.log at the end of this mail...

... I don't use NetBeans too often, so I'm not sure when this started;
IIRC the first time I saw this Problem was after I installed a NetBeans
4.0"alpha" from Source on FreeBSD 5.2.1. Currently I'm running FBSD
5.3-STABLE.

I already removed the /usr/local/netbeans Directory and also my
~/.netbenas Directory -- but that didn't help at all.

The "cvs" executable is installed, and reachable through PATH
(/usr/bin/cvs).

Does anyone here have a hint?

MTIA!
Cheers,
_ralf_

Hello.

  Here is a workaround:

- extract 'org/netbeans/modules/vcs/profiles/cvsprofiles/config/cvs.xml'
from 'netbeans/modules/cvs-profile.jar'

- edit cvs.xml, changing this (it's at the start of the file):
    <compatible>"Unix", "Windows"</compatible>
to this:
    <compatible>"FreeBSD", "Unix", "Windows"</compatible>

- copy the resulting cvs.xml to
'~/.netbeans/3.6/system/vcs/config/cvs.xml' or (system wide)
'netbeans/system/vcs/config/cvs.xml' (maybe you'll have to create the
directories).

- (re)start Netbeans

  Then you'll have a CVS profile to chose when mounting a VCS filesystem.

  Dunno how the OS identification is done, but (obviously?) FreeBSD is
not identified as "Unix".

Just wondering if this is related to PR 62837...I'll have another play.

  Mozilla is trying to use the Linux Java plugin. To use it, you must
also install www/linuxpluginwrapper. But ...

  ... once you installed the native jdk (jdk-1.4.2p6_6 in your ports
list), you can deinstall the Linux one (linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.05), it is
only needed for building. Then set the environment variables JAVA_HOME
and JDK_HOME to jdk-1.4.2p6_6's base directory (/usr/local/jdk1.4.2)
to use it instead.

(p.s.: try to use a meaningful Subject: next time)
