My AP can be configured to use WEP in 'open mode' (e.g. allowing both encrypted and unencrypted connections) and 'restricted (shared key) mode' (e.g. allowing only encrypted connections). My system is freebsd-current. Acording to ifconfig(8), wireless card can be configured in restricted mode (mepmode on) and open mode (wepmode mixed). The problem is 'wepmode on' works ONLY when AP is in Open mode, but I want to allow only encrypted connections. But then I put my AP into 'shared key' mode, freebsd losts its association with AP. However, wireless nic is capable to work in restricted mode, because in Linux 'iwconfig eth1 key [1] restricted' works fine. I guess it's freebsd wi(4) issue, isn't it? Just a nit, but it could save some wasted time. The BIOS configuration utility for most ThinkPads is PS2, not PS. It is a DOS tool, but will not work with WINE, DOSCMD, or any other DOS emulator I have seen. You really need to make a DOS disk with he executable on it. If you have the Windows software that came on your system, PS2 is available from the DOS command tool. Try 'PS2 ?' for a summary. -- R. Hm, now that IS interesting. Something, somewhere, seems to have some sort of conflict with Kismet. I'd like to help you track this down, as I'm having the exact same problem, and would like to be able to use my system for wardriving again as well. I'll get to backing up my system in preparation to rebuild, and I'll go this way: Install from CDs, install Kismet. Test. CVSUP, rebuild base system, rebuild kismet, test. Start installing ports - X, KDE3, firefox, rebuilding kismet and testing after each. It's heartening to know that I'm not the only person having this problem. Thank you, now I know there's a way to track down the problem. After it, closing note should bring your laptop into suspend or shutdown or whatewer you set. But the question is - does your centrino laptop support suspend to ram? Try 'acpiconf -s 3' to test this. Or maybe your have acpi4bios=1 (look for this sysctl value)? I think this is the only way to test if your laptop fully supported on freebsd or not :) I'm sure intel wireless nic would work as well as the wired one, but acpi... Would your mind to drop me a line after your experiments? I'm interesting with centrino on freebsd but have no suitable laptop (mine one is just a p4-mobile, not centrino) PN> You are thinking about hw.acpi.cpu.throttle_state, isnit?... Sure, AFAIK cpu frequency scaling doesn't supported yet so the best you can do is to put cpu into sleep for periods of time using throttle states. -- Best regards, Toxa mailto:postfix@sendmail.ru From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 25 13:01:22 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC6E516A4CE for ; Tue, 25 May 2004 13:01:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from shazam.wetworks.org (shazam.wetworks.org [192.160.237.254]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 0763F43D1D for ; Tue, 25 May 2004 13:01:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from alan@clegg.com) Received: (qmail 42396 invoked by uid 1000); 25 May 2004 20:01:10 -0000 Received: by shazam.wetworks.org (tmda-sendmail, from uid 1000); Tue, 25 May 2004 16:01:10 -0400 (EDT) Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 16:01:10 -0400 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040525200110.GY72221@shazam.wetworks.org> References: <200405200904.37966.fish@fish-mail.com> <200405200825.06207.sam@errno.com> <200405201138.52801.fish@fish-mail.com> <200405200850.29662.sam@errno.com> <20040525150605.GR72221@shazam.wetworks.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="EDT6MSV0B3GxyNyZ" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040525150605.GR72221@shazam.wetworks.org> X-Habeas-SWE-1: winter into spring X-Habeas-SWE-2: brightly anticipated X-Habeas-SWE-3: like Habeas SWE (tm) X-Habeas-SWE-4: Copyright 2002 Habeas (tm) X-Habeas-SWE-5: Sender Warranted Email (SWE) (tm). I'm starting to remember about this stuff. I did the kismet code to support radiotap and freebsd. The complaint about the DLT type is because I didn't want to cannibalize the kismet code that handles this stuff--fixing the code to not complain would've required major surgery and Mike wasn't keen on that (or maybe I wasn't?). As to the cpu usage, I believe this was an unresolved problem with the wi driver that didn't happen with ath. Despite seeing high cpu usage with the wi driver things appeared to work fine for me and I ran out of time to spend chasing the problem. So what everyone is seeing is probably just the way I left it when I did the original work. kismet is a useful tool but a bit painful to debug with gdb because of the heavy use of STL. I'm not sure about the clients, but that explains the servers. FYI, I have the same problem on my side. Kismet takes as much processor as it can, and never picks up any access points. The key combination Fn+F8 is supposed to switch from the LCD screen output to the VGA port to both and so on. This does not work when running X, but does work when I'm in console mode. The other special keys that require Fn all work fine (such as the ones to change the volume and screen brightness). However, there is one other combination that doesn't work, which is Fn+NumLock = ScrollLock. Again, this combination does work in console mode. Unfortunately, I can't switch to the VGA port in console mode and then switch back to X, it goes back to the LCD. I'd really like to get this key working, since I do use this for presentations.
