My adventure started here: http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/guster/artist.jhtml My goal is the "Careful" video. If you click on it, you get a popup box that would normally play the video via a plug-in. The box uses Javascript to disable the right-click context menus, so I had to turn that off to get the ASX URL from the page source: http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/mediaplayer/asxmaker.asx?clipids=1614624&s1=az&s2=guster&adPth=/asm/adsetup/artists/az/&x=x.asx If you look at that ASX file, you find what should be the main ASF file between two promo clips: mms://a1979.v0534a.c534.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1979/534/v001/mtvnshrdstor.download.akamai.com/8646/_!/mtvi/bands/g/guster/careful_full_320.asf?auth=caCbUdBckcqcYcKawb6dhdqaBdMa9aib0aw-bata2r-dHa-BFLynE&aifp=ver_03"> ASFrecorder would choke on that though with "unknown content-type" because it was handing out the vnd.ms.wms-hdr.asfv1 MIME type. So I patched asfrecorder.c to add that MIME type to the list of "prerecorded content" MIME types. asfrecorder got a bit further, then complained again about application/x-mms-framed so I added that to the list too. The relevant part of the source now looked like: /* Determine whether this is live content or not */ if ((!stricmp(ContentType, "application/octet-stream")) || (!stricmp(ContentType, "application/vnd.ms.wms-hdr.asfv1")) || (!stricmp(ContentType, "application/x-mms-framed")) ) { if (strstr(Features, "broadcast")) { hi->contenttype = live_content; } else { hi->contenttype = prerecorded_content; } } At that point I could save the stream and got a 28MB file. However mplayer doesn't detect the video stream: ASF file format detected. ============ ASF Stream group == START === object size = 74 stream count=[0x8][8] stream id=[0x1][1] max bitrate=[0xcdb7][52663] stream id=[0x2][2] max bitrate=[0xd2b8][53944] stream id=[0x3][3] max bitrate=[0xcf25][53029] stream id=[0x4][4] max bitrate=[0x1ba16][113174] stream id=[0x5][5] max bitrate=[0xcf25][53029] stream id=[0x6][6] max bitrate=[0x400d0][262352] stream id=[0x7][7] max bitrate=[0xcf25][53029] stream id=[0x8][8] max bitrate=[0x6ff75][458613] ============ ASF Stream group == END === ASF: No video stream found. Apparently there's a portaudio backend for Jack, and I'm pretty sure portaudio works with FreeBSD as that's what Audacity uses (and that works okay on FreeBSD). I'm afraid there may be scheduler latency issues with FreeBSD, though. For example, when I'm recording a second track with Audacity in full-duplex mode, I get an audible drop every 12 seconds or so (I suspect that's when audacity flashes its buffer to disk, but have been unable to confirm this). For now I've actually moved back to Linux for my one desktop system with the nice soundcard, just for the low-latency kernel patch and jack/ardour. If this starts working well, I'll be back to FreeBSD for everything again. -- Jim Ramsay "Me fail English? That's unpossible!" Jack compiles fine, just had to twiddle the makefiles a little. As for ardour, I got it to configure, however: mountpoint.cc:23:20: mntent.h: No such file or directory mountpoint.cc:29: error: syntax error before `*' token This is going to have to remain a "rainy day" port, that's for sure. I'm not sure what other issues are there but i'll give it a show sometime within the next couple of weeks, it dosn't look *too* bad at a glance. All the library dependicies are in ports, so that helps a lot. (excluding jack) Amar. (On CURRENT there is hw.clockrate) - It does not play sound here, but it looks like a portaudio problem, I have to read the portaudio documentation. - The jack port does not install its documentation - I have not looked at the patch for the oss output plugin. - patch-jack.h makes assumptions, that may be incorrect on FreeBSD 4.x alpha. I am trying to fix at least some of the issues, but I haven't set a maintainer, so anyone that fixes the open issues, can have it. Is anyone else seeing this on their systems, or is it just me? As I'm not sure what info maybe helpful I'll just leave it at the facts that I'm running on an Inspiron 8000 with a maestro3 chipset. I'm having the issues with ogle, mplayer, and xmms. I'm running most sound through esd (the package from the install cd -- esound-0.2.32_1). Other than this (admittedly slight but increasingly annoying) sound issue everything else works *very* nicely. If this can be resolved I'll very happily run 5.2.1 as my main working environment (I've got two 4.9 installs on the disk and one of those is my day-to-day environment).
