Hmm, dtv looks promising. It works in standalone mode. However, as as soon as I try to connect with a client, like this: dtv -C 1 -h server -T weurope -z I get this error: X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 1 (X_CreateWindow) Value in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 7 Current serial number in output stream: 17 And Google didn't find me any good answer on how to deal with that. For opening the digital audio files in a graphical environment and editing them, a lot of people seem to like audacity: /usr/ports/audio/audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net I've tried it a little on Linux and FreeBSD and I like it a lot, although I am no expert. My hack runs in userland and uses generic USB device (ugen) to talk with the device. I managed to extract MPEG-2 stream that plays nicely on mplayer, and I've began to wonder about suitable API for this kind of device. Is there kernel API for digital video devices (and DVB spefically) that might be adopted to get good program support for this kind of device? Or, maybe even better, userland API based on (domain) sockets? DVB has many features that are a bit hard to translate to traditional tuner API, like bktr, as multiple "channels" (PIDs) can be on single tuner frequency, several of them might be necessary to be used at the same time, there's possibility of DVB data transports (certainly service information!), and decryption may require some API support, too... -kirma From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 31 02:56:39 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 87BD516A4CE for ; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 02:56:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from ms-dienst.rz.rwth-aachen.de (ms-2.rz.RWTH-Aachen.DE [134.130.3.131]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 22D0443D2D for ; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 02:56:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from alex@big.endian.de) Received: from r220-1 (r220-1.rz.RWTH-Aachen.DE [134.130.3.31]) by ms-dienst.rz.rwth-aachen.de (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.12 (built Feb 13 2003)) with ESMTP id <0HVF004GUSJHJG@ms-dienst.rz.rwth-aachen.de> for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:17 +0200 (MEST) Received: from relay.RWTH-Aachen.DE ([134.130.3.1]) by r220-1 (MailMonitor for SMTP v1.2.2 ) ; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:17 +0200 (MEST) Received: from dustpuppy.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de (dustpuppy.kawo2.RWTH-Aachen.DE [134.130.180.5])i2VAjGJC026367 for ; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:16 +0200 (MEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1])for ; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:16 +0200 (CEST) Received: from fump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de (fump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de [134.130.181.148])0E5491FC0CB; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:15 +0200 (CEST) Received: from fump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.defump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i2VAjFh6032984; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:15 +0200 Received: (from alex@localhost) by fump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i2VAjF8A032853; Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:15 +0200 (CEST envelope-from alex) Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:45:15 +0200 From: Alexander Langer In-reply-to: To: Jari Kirma Message-id: <20040331104515.GF45171@fump.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de> MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-kawo2_dustpuppy_0.3 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on dustpuppy.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de X-Spam-Report: * -1.5 BAYES_01 BODY: Bayesian spam probability is 1 to 10% * [score: 0.0127] X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-1.5 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_01 autolearn=no version=2.60-kawo2_dustpuppy_0.3 X-Spam-Level: X-AntiVirus: checked by AntiVir MailGate (version: 2.0.1.16; AVE: 6.24.0.7; VDF: 6.24.0.77; host: dustpuppy.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de) References: cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Driver APIs for DVB? There is a port for freevo in http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/59047. Not DVB, but at least a PVR. I've been meaning to update it for a while now but am swamped with other things. I'd be very happy if someone else would get this into commit-ready shape. It may be some weeks before I'll get around to it. This is on -stable (as of today). Relevant messages (other lines omitted) from UT2004: fcntl: No such device or address ioctl SETFRAGMENT: Invalid argument native_blitbuffer: select error occured the last message occurs when exiting UT2004. The process ut2004-bin is stuck in 'pcmsyn' state and I have to kill it. In -current (same machine) sound is OK, and I only get the 'fcntl' message. The sound in both UT2003 and UT2004 demo is working well on -stable. Things I tried: - using my second sound card: same problem. - copying openal.so from UT2003 and UT2004 demo to UT2004: no error messages anymore, but also no sound. - this obscure sequence makes the sound work properly: 1. reboot machine 2. start UT2004 demo, and quit after watching the intro 3. start UT2004. Now the sound is OK... Since the game has the tendency to crash quite often (once in 2 hours or so), I have to do this all over again because I found no other way to get the sound right after the game crashed. I'm going to try the OSS commercial driver (it helped me often with sound problems in Linux games) but I prefer to use the pcm driver. Any tips? TIA, Karel. I notice that you don't mention the sound card type. Also, I would suggest that you play with enabling, disabling vchans and see if it helps. Also, I Thanks for the quick reply! My sound devices: pcm0: at io 0xa400 irq 10 (1p/1r/0v channels duplex default) pcm1: at io 0xa000 irq 9 (1p/1r/0v channels duplex) Both sound cards have the same problem. > would suggest that you play with enabling, disabling vchans and see if I tried sysctl hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=4 sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans=4 but it doesn't help. I'm getting a bunch of extra native_blitbuffer: select error occured > it helps. After that, you can try some patches that are floating > around that limit the fragment size. Could you provide a pointer to those patches? I googled around for a while but didn't find anything relevant. Also, I tried the following http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/sound/pcm/dsp.c?rev=1.64&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup in dsp.c of -stable. Although the 'ioctl SETFRAGMENT: Invalid argument' does not appear anymore, the sound is still messed up. Even worse, the trick with first starting the demo doesn't work anymore, so I reverted back to the original dsp.c . Karel.
