I've a stupid question, before I spend money on a fancy doorstop: Can anyone say anything about available external USB-connected soundcards, like whether I can expect them to appear as a normal uaudio device, or whether they require proprietary protocols and/or firmware that would prevent them from working normally under a Real Operating System? Manufacturer brand names and such would be welcomed. As I have no experience with such, I have no idea where to begin. In particular, I've been eyeballing the Creative Audigy 2 NX, a USB device with S/PDIF in/outputs, and I'm most interested in consumer hardware with S/PDIF in/out ability, should anyone have feedback about such. I've seen a couple other Creative products in shops too, as well as a Hercules Muse knob that supposedly also works on a Mac as only 2-channel, so may well work on BSD... Surely someone out there has such a device and has tried it under FreeBSD (or another BSD), and I'd be pleased as punch to hear of your experiences. Unless I must be the guinea pig, and probably donate the device to some 'doze user if I have no success... Thanks in advance for any comments (don't reply to me directly -- I'll catch up from the archives) barry bouwsma From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 26 12:57:40 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A5EDA16A4CE for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:57:40 +0000 (GMT) Received: from w2xo.jcdurham.com (18.gibs5.xdsl.nauticom.net [209.195.184.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0400443D53 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:57:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from durham@jcdurham.com) Received: from tiltdown.pgh.nepinc.com (pgh.nepinc.com [66.207.129.50]) by w2xo.jcdurham.com (8.12.11/8.11.6) with ESMTP id i9QCvcJY011835 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 08:57:39 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from durham@jcdurham.com) From: Jim Durham To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2004 08:57:37 -0400 User-Agent: KMail/1.7 References: <200410192330.23055.durham@w2xo.pgh.pa.us> <20041020002731.Q435@freeman.4gh.net> <200410200933.49034.durham@jcdurham.com> In-Reply-To: <200410200933.49034.durham@jcdurham.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200410260857.37840.durham@jcdurham.com> Subject: Re: kphone / linphone / asterisk X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:57:40 -0000 On Wednesday 20 October 2004 09:33 am, Jim Durham wrote: > On Wednesday 20 October 2004 01:51 am, Stuart Barkley wrote: > > On Tue, 19 Oct 2004 at 23:30 -0400, Jim Durham wrote: > > > Has anyone got kphone to work on 5.x or 4.x ? > > > > I've recently tried both net/linphone and net/kphone on 4.10 with no > > success and have also been wondering if anyone has them working > > correctly. I also recently upgraded my Audacity 1.0 to 1.2.1 on my 4.10 box and it wouldn't work either, saying something like "Can't open audio sublayer" or some such. I noticed that , even though it was set to dsp0, it was trying to open /dev/dsp. I made a link from dsp0 to dsp and audacity started to work. I then wondered if this had anything to do with kphone's problems, so I opened it and voila! It opened right up. My friend who has asterisk running has a test dialup which gives you the weather and time, and I dialed that and could understand it OK, but barely, however it was better than 5.2.1. So, I had him place a call to me and it connected OK, but 4.10 has a very strange situation in kphone receive, it seems to chop on slightly after a word has begun, then stay on for a phrase, then repeat the phrase and chop off. It's like someone stuttering, almost.. In transmit, the pitch (My friend heard this, not me) is seemingly about 1/2 of normal and sounds like Worf with a cold. Oh , well.. -Jim From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 27 22:24:55 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDDC016A4CE; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:24:55 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.stare.cz (ns.stare.cz [81.95.102.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2658F43D1D; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:24:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from hans@stare.cz) Received: by ns.stare.cz (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 4BD5BB865; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 00:32:48 +0200 (CEST) Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 00:32:48 +0200 From: Jan Stary To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20041027223248.GA67950@ns.stare.cz> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: snd_neomagic kldloads, then 5.2.1-p11 freezes X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:24:56 -0000 Hello, I am running FreeBSD 5.2.1-p11 on a Dell Latitude LS notebook. (See KERNCONF and dmesg at the end.) Nearly everything is working fine, except for the sound chip. I built the sound stuff as modules (sound/pcm + sound/driver/neomagic, resulting in snd_pcm + snd_neomagic). When I try to insert the module, I get # kldload snd_neomagic pcm0: mem 0xfea00000-0xfeafffff,0xf7800000-0xf7bfffff, irq 10, device 0.1 on pci1 and then the system freezes. If I compile pcm right into the kernel, the freeze occurs during bootime with the same message. I also have wi0 running at irq 10 (see dmesg); when I don't use it (no card in, no device attached to wi0, irq 10 not used by anything), the freeze ocuurs all the same. Suspecting some conflict between devices using irq 10, I said hint.pcm.0.irq="5" in /boot/device.hints (irq 5 is not used by anything), but kldloading snd_neomagic still tries to use irq 10 - why is that? What is the right way of telling a device which irq to use? Before I even found that it is a NeoMagic, I built all the sound modules and tried kldloading them. Some of them just loaded and nothing happened (I probably don't have any device they could serve), some resulted in # kldload snd_ad1816 sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0x4000 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload snd_ess sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload snd_mss sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload speaker sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled speaker0 port0x61 on acpi0 Why does kldloading a sound module have to do anything with sio1? Where is irq 3 'configured' to be used? (by the sound module?) So I also disabled sio1 in device.hints (hint.sio.1.disabled="1") - there is only one sio at the machine anyway. I use ACPI - does it have anything to do with my problem? (with ACPI, devices are 'on acpi0', not on 'on isa0' etc.) Thanks Jan This is my KERNCONF: # DELL -- kernel configuration file for FreeBSD/i386 on Dell Latitude LS ident DELL machine i386 cpu I686_CPU #options CPU_SUSP_HALT # suspend on halt #options CPU_UPGRADE_HW_CACHE # eliminates unneeded cache flushes #options PERFMON #hints "GENERIC.hints" # Default places to look for devices. #makeoptions DEBUG=-g # Build kernel with gdb(1) debug symbols options SCHED_ULE # ULE scheduler options INET # InterNETworking options INET6 # IPv6 communications protocols options IPSEC options IPSEC_DEBUG options BRIDGE options FFS # Berkeley Fast Filesystem options SOFTUPDATES # Enable FFS soft updates support options UFS_ACL # Support for access control lists options UFS_DIRHASH # Improve performance on big directories options MD_ROOT # MD is a potential root device options PROCFS # Process filesystem (requires PSEUDOFS) options PSEUDOFS # Pseudo-filesystem framework options GEOM_GPT # GUID Partition Tables. options COMPAT_43 # Compatible with BSD 4.3 [KEEP THIS!] options COMPAT_FREEBSD4 # Compatible with FreeBSD4 #options SCSI_DELAY=15000 # Delay (in ms) before probing SCSI options KTRACE # ktrace(1) support options SYSVSHM # SYSV-style shared memory options SYSVMSG # SYSV-style message queues options SYSVSEM # SYSV-style semaphores options _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING # POSIX P1003_1B real-time extensions options KBD_INSTALL_CDEV # install a CDEV entry in /dev # Bus support.
