Not quite. Motivating example: I am used to the existence of a utility /usr/local/bin/wn. Doing 'make search name=wn' does not turn up anything useful. How do I find out which port (if any) will provide the file /usr/local/bin/wn? Generally, for any file, how do I find out which ports provide it? -- --- Debois From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 8 11:42:45 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56B2616A4CE for ; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 11:42:45 -0800 (PST) Received: from sccrmhc11.comcast.net (sccrmhc11.comcast.net [204.127.202.55]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 251E043D1D for ; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 11:42:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Pastor_Mac@spymac.com) Received: from spymac.com (c-67-172-71-158.client.comcast.net[67.172.71.158]) by comcast.net (sccrmhc11) with SMTP id <2004020819424401100t5s77e>; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 19:42:44 +0000 Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 14:42:43 -0500 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v553) From: Pastor Mac To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In-Reply-To: <200402070310.i173ADZt073492@freefall.freebsd.org> Message-Id: X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.553) Subject: Raw Newcomer X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 08 Feb 2004 19:42:45 -0000 Hi folks-- Well, I'm jumping into the deep end and tried the 4.9 release. I finally got the system stable after the 3rd try. I started out on a unstable WinXP box and wiped the drive and reloaded XP Pro on the first 15 GB of the 40 GB drive. I had a second 8 GB drive that I wanted to put FreeBSD on and so I was using the mini install disc and a FTP connection to the main site. But apparently I ended up either slicing the wrong drive or putting the bootloader elsewhere. Upon the post-install reboot, I had nothing. I was sure I did things right but obviously not. Back to the install docs. The 2nd time I just tried using the mini-install CD but I didn't get enough pkgs for some selections I made and so several pkgs were missing components, namely a graphical environment. OK, I'm a Mac freak (albeit on OS X) and navigating a command line is not easy so I need the training wheels right now... So I decided to wipe the slice again and create a 10 GB slice on the main drive and another FTP install (Comcast cable service is now giving a 3 Mbps connection to users) and see if I can put the bootloader in the right place. I chose the "Graphical User" option for packages--I'm not a coder or developer, I just want to be a desktop user and play with the server tools because I'd like to get into network administration and from the conversation I pick up here and there is that *BSD has the maturity that Linux yet needs. Plus Max OS X has the BSD network layer and Avie Tevanian seems to have pretty good judgement on such matters. Anyway, I have the Handbook and I'm trying to digest what I can--I had a class last year using Red Hat 7.2 for network administration so I'm acquainted with basic terminology and some of the standard server packages (BIND, Sendmail, Apache, etc). I'm going to read and pop up in the Questions list and try real, real hard not to sound like the marketing doofus from User Friendly. The handbook can seem a little vague/confusing at first but once you get used to it, for the most part it gives you all you need to know. I started out with the book FreeBSD an Open Source Operating System for Your Personal Computer. I had successfully installed FreeBSD before that, but it wasn't till I read that book that I was able to turn it into a useful system. After that I went back to the handbook and read through the parts I had going and it started to make sense to me, now it's my main FreeBSD text, because it's in there. Also the book The Complete FreeBSD has prouven to be very useful, and would recommend it for some network information. I'm currently reading through it and the other sources, because I want to set up a gateway/router/firewall/desktop. Wow 3Mbps!!! That would make ftp installs really nice, I have cable here too and thought I was being spoiled when we were offered 1Mbps. In my humble opinion, the ftp install is the only way to go, you get all the latest goodies. Well keep us informed, I would like to hear about your progress. -- Lute ************************ * Power Provided * * by * * FreeBSD 5.1 RELEASE * ************************ From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 8 14:34:36 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C799E16A4CE for ; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 14:34:36 -0800 (PST) Received: from rwcrmhc13.comcast.net (rwcrmhc13.comcast.net [204.127.198.39]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C53A143D1D for ; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 14:34:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Pastor_Mac@spymac.com) Received: from spymac.com (c-67-172-71-158.client.comcast.net[67.172.71.158]) by comcast.net (rwcrmhc13) with SMTP id <2004020822343501500k4ljke>; Sun, 8 Feb 2004 22:34:36 +0000 Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 17:34:34 -0500 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v553) From: Pastor Mac To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In-Reply-To: <20040208152833.57f07d14@agnes> Message-Id: X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.553) Subject: Re: Raw Newcomer X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 08 Feb 2004 22:34:36 -0000 On Sunday, February 8, 2004, at 04:28 PM, Lute Mullenix wrote: > Well keep us informed, I would like to hear about your progress. But the more perspectives on a problem means that each author might have found some issue others might not think is worth mentioning or simply gloss over it. Ultimately, proficiency comes from making mistakes and learning what happened in order not to do it again--the book merely points out where the edge of the cliff is but its up to us to stop before we fall off. My problem is that after being questioned about whether I really want to carry on with the installation, I get a message saying "the root filesystem could not be created" Also, I have three CD and DVD drives, and when questioned about which to use, I haven't got the slightest idea. But, in any case, I have tried with the three, and the result is the same. My system is set as: Primary channel: Main HD (160 Gig) as master, and a CD-RW as slave Secondary channel: A 60 Gig HD as master and a DVD-ROM as slave. All the above in a ULTRA ATA card. There is as well a master DVD+RW in the primary channel of the motherboard. I am trying to install 5.2 on the second disk (secondary channel). [snipped] > >is this enough ? > >thanks > >richard Hi Richard, I'm sure you probably know this, but your email was confusing on this point: rebuilding the kernel does not "pull in" (patch/whatever) anything. You must use cvs/cvsup (or equivalent), or apply the appropriate patch(es). Assuming you have done something like that, rebuilding the kernel should fix the SysV shared memory bug, but not the mksnap_ffs bug nor many of the cumulative fixes since release. About those fixes, the advisories say: NOTE WELL: Due to release engineering in progress at the time of this writing, the RELENG_5_2 security branch (5.2-RELEASE-p1) also includes numerous other critical bug fixes, most of which are not security related. Please read src/UPDATING for details on these changes. mksnap_ffs can be rebuilt by following the advice in the advisory. If I were you, I would rebuild the whole system just to be on the safe side. See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cutting-edge.html for details regarding cvsup and rebuilding the system. Due to the speed of my Internet connection at home, it is trying for me to download the files required during the installation of ports, so I downloaded all the packages for 5.1 at work (where the Internet connection is not much better, but at least I can leave downloads running overnight and all weekend). After more reading, I have concieved a desire to upgrade a couple of applications, including doing a cvsup, however that would appear to require the source and patches that the installation of ports would have provided. Consequently I am wondering whether anyone else has wrestled with this, and whether it is actually a good idea to grab large groups of packages and keep a fairly static system (in the way of updates), or to have more patience and let the sources and patches download. My reasoning for the latter is that unless there is a significant version increase, it would only be necessary to download (or to have cvsup download for me) much smaller incremental patches to ports rather than downloading an entire new package. The only other downside is the compile time, but I did compile the J2SDK and I don't imagine there would be too many apps larger than that! The optimisation of applications does not concern me too much, and I rarely if ever need any options that are not compiled into the packages. So, has anyone else gone down this road, did you switch from packages to ports (with a 56K dialup Internet connection), how did you fare, and did you encounter any problems? tia Dave From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 9 13:38:27 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAA4616A4CE for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 13:38:27 -0800 (PST) Received: from hotmail.com (sea1-f49.sea1.hotmail.com [207.68.163.49]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 94CC043D1F for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 13:38:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from crollins666@hotmail.com) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 13:38:23 -0800 Received: from 216.19.22.118 by sea1fd.sea1.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Mon, 09 Feb 2004 21:38:23 GMT X-Originating-IP: [216.19.22.118] X-Originating-Email: [crollins666@hotmail.com] X-Sender: crollins666@hotmail.com From: "clayton rollins" To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 21:38:23 +0000 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 09 Feb 2004 21:38:23.0358 (UTC) FILETIME=[0B1351E0:01C3EF55] cc: debois@diku.dk Subject: Re: Finding ports X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 21:38:27 -0000 On Feb. 8, 2004 Søren Debois wrote: > >On Sun, Feb 08, 2004 at 10:27:59AM -0600, Tweax Daemon wrote: > > On Sun, Feb 08, 2004 at 02:15:48PM +0100, Søren Debois wrote: > > > /usr/local/bin/fetchmail > > > > > I'd like to find all currently not-installed ports, which *would* > > > install the above file? > > > > The makefile in /mail/fetchmail port would have all dependencies >listed > > if I'm understanding you correctly. > >Not quite. Generally, for any file, how do I find out which >ports provide it? > >-- > --- Debois Hi, This is far from perfect, but may get it done for you. Many ports include a pkg-plist file that lists installed files. (Some ports dynamically create the plist, others may use Makefile variables instead of having an actual plist.) I'd imagine there's some trickery (grep, etc.) you could do to extract port names from occurences of a string in the pkg-plist file. (Note that the prefix, in this case /usr/local, is not included in the plist.) I am a newbie who has set up a command line system on an XPI 166 = laptop. If I am posting this to a wrong please then please forgive the = error and tell me where to post. Most things seem to work okay except the ftp - I have been struggling = with this on and off for a couple of weeks. To download some packages = I ended up running ncftp and it was able to successfully operate but = excruciatingly slowly (ie 950secs) for a download of about 1MB - I = operate on ADSL - go figure. Both the regular and nc ftp packages seem prone to stalling. My latest = problems centre about trying to download some webpage files from another = machine (WinXP) attached to (and behind) a USR router/firewall (yes the = USRobotics firewall is enabled) my Freebsd one is not. The ftp server = is filezilla server on the WinXP machine. I was starting with = downloading a simple webpage to test apache - two files, index.htm and a = small (30K) jpeg image. Index file downloaded quickly, the jpeg = stalled after 26K - and kept on stalling - same place. When I tried = using ncftp this time, it stalled at about 18K. Things are set up well = enough that I am able to connect to and navigate the server from my = FreeBSD system. Clearly there must be some basic setting that is incorrect or = incompatible - perhaps related to my router - but am not too sure. The only reference which I could find was related to problems with = tcp.recvspace being set at 56K for 4.8, but it seemed to refer to modem = related problems. In any event I was not able to change it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did have the advantage that I live by myself and if friends or family tried to call and the phone was busy for long periods of time they would send me an email. Granted it's much nicer now that I have the cable access, but if I were forced to go back to dialup I would continue to use the ports. As you know other than tying up the phone line it's not a big deal if it takes a long time to upgrade, you can still use your system like you always do. I even used to IM when downloading, a bit of a delay but it worked. My latest problems centre about trying to download some webpage files from another machine (WinXP) attached to (and behind) a USR router/firewall (yes the USRobotics firewall is enabled) my Freebsd one is not. The ftp server is filezilla server on the WinXP machine. I was starting with downloading a simple webpage to test apache - two files, index.htm and a small (30K) jpeg image. Index file downloaded quickly, the jpeg stalled after 26K - and kept on stalling - same place. When I tried using ncftp this time, it stalled at about 18K. Things are set up well enough that I am able to connect to and navigate the server from my FreeBSD system. > Clearly there must be some basic setting that is incorrect or incompatible - perhaps related to my router - but am not too sure. > The only reference which I could find was related to problems with tcp.recvspace being set at 56K for 4.8, but it seemed to refer to modem related problems. I believe that it is because the schg flag is set. How can I verify if the schg flag is set and how did it get set? Also, I understand that schg flag may not be able to be switched if kern_securitylevel is not set to 0 or less. How can I verify which kern_securitylevel is set to if my /etc/rc.conf file only has kern_securelevel_enable="NO" and does not have an entry for kern_securelevel? I am running FreeBSD 5.1. Like many other people new to FreeBSD, I come from many years of experience with Linux. In Linux we can build the kernel to provide a frame buffer device(s) /dev/fb0 fb1, fb2... This is basically a file descriptor that actually refers to the memory on the video card. Using ioctl system calls to this descriptor gets and sets resolution and color depth, etc. I've written a fairly comprehensive API in C called ezfb. http://www.akrobiz.com/ezfb/ Is there anything like this in FreeBSD? Is there any way to port this code to FreeBSD? Thanks! I am having a problem configuring the IBM EtherJet Cardbus network card and am unable to connect to the network. After doing some research on google, I modified my /boot/loader.conf to have: hw.ata.atapi_dma="1" hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" hw.cbb.start_memory="536870912" apm_load="1" I also modified my /etc/rc.conf to include: devd_enable="YES" pccard_enable="YES" pccard_ifconfig="YES" After doing this FreeBSD does recognize the card and when I type an ifconfig, I do see the network card. However, I do not get an IP address assigned to me. On doing a "dhclient dc0" (dc0 is my device name for the etherjet card) I get an error "dc0: watchdog timeout". How can I configure my card to get an IP address using DHCP. I have not built a custom kernel. Do I need to build one, and if yes what would be the kernel config file values? Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks! Mandrake Linux 9.2 is installed over there. Using fdisk in FreeBSD installer, I created another primary partition and tried installing FreeBSD 5.2.1 there. Unfortunately, the installation process got hung while the installer was "Creating a root filesystem on ad10s3". I waited for more than 3 hours. I selected none when I was prompted to install a boot manager, since I wanted to boot using Grub which is already there when I install Linux. What did I do wrong? Thank you in advance. You will run in some problems because of files left from 4.9, that are not present and/or have other names in 5.2. I don't know what you did wrong, but please redirect your question to the -questions list. Also include some more information on your harddrive partitioning. "ad10s3" seems extremely unusual. In FreeBSD parlance, it means the third primary partition on the *tenth* ATA drive. If you mistyped, and meant "ad1s3", make sure this is the third partition BEFORE any extended partitions (which should always be the last). It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. Try using wget directly and see if it makes a difference. Regarding the .exe file, make sure the link you're trying to download is not a fake ISO image - eventually delivering a Windows executable ... but that pure speculation. If I may ask, what ISO image are you trying to download? I dont see why that exe file would be going to my tmp folder. i'm using mozilla 1.5. maybe thats just the way the mozilla download manager works. its odd that it would use a temp file name with exe extension as a temp file. I will do wget and hope for the best. :) thanks Jose Lima (not the baseball player) --- Olivier@yahoo.com, UNEXPECTED_DATA_AFTER_ADDRESS@.SYNTAX-ERROR. wrote: > Hi you! :-) > > The error message says it all:although you're saving > to your desktop, the file > seems to be first received in /tmp (hence the file > name). If you continue to have problems, consider writing -questions for further help. To note, my rc.conf contains the line: ifconfig_xl0="DHCP" where xl0 is the name of the interface (NIC).
