I deleted them all. now I remember installing compat-4-* a short time before as /ports/graphics/xnview was complaining about a stale dependancy. the "shadowed " files were the compat-4-* ones. now , with the familiar boot, after the message: Mounting root from ads02 the machine wants to drop into single user mode, but it doesnt find any shells, instead there is the message: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: shared object "libncurses.so.5" not found. I suspect, if this one was found, there were other complaints about the other lib* files I deleted. only the loader prompt is working, but leads in the end to the same message. tried the emergency shell from a 5.1 disk, but I am uncertain what to do and do not want to screw up the data completely. the idea is: make world again with the last sources ( current, last update 20. or 21 april), as they were working nicely. any ideas how I can get a shell ? or another solution ? no need to tell me about banging my head into all available walls. :( the machine is a notebook without floppy drive. thanks hans From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun May 2 18:33:18 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B14916A4CF; Sun, 2 May 2004 18:33:18 -0700 (PDT) Received: from troutmask.apl.washington.edu (troutmask.apl.washington.edu [128.208.78.105]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C9EB43D1F; Sun, 2 May 2004 18:33:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sgk@troutmask.apl.washington.edu) Received: from troutmask.apl.washington.edu (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i431XHsS070986; Sun, 2 May 2004 18:33:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sgk@troutmask.apl.washington.edu) Received: (from sgk@localhost)i431XH55070985; Sun, 2 May 2004 18:33:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sgk) Date: Sun, 2 May 2004 18:33:17 -0700 From: Steve Kargl To: haig@sylac.de Message-ID: <20040503013317.GA70955@troutmask.apl.washington.edu> References: <27069625$1083545780409598b48f99f4.24297031@config22.schlund.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <27069625$1083545780409598b48f99f4.24297031@config22.schlund.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: freebsd-current@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: missing libncurses.so.5 and other lib* X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 May 2004 01:33:18 -0000 On Mon, May 03, 2004 at 03:02:01AM +0200, haig@sylac.de wrote: > > as they were working nicely. > any ideas how I can get a shell ? > or another solution ? Get into single user mode with your rescue floppy, mount your file systems, and you can try to symlink .so.5 to whatever the correct .so file is. This is just a dirty fix though, and you'll probably want to rebuild from source like you said once you can actually get into single user mode so that you don't have this problem with all of your libraries. Go ahead roll your eyes. I back up the important files from my laptops via rsync to my main system. I could use amanda or rdump or other methods such as burning a CD or DVD. If you're going to remove shared libraries, one should have some sort of back up plan. -- Steve From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 3 08:29:21 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 70EE816A4CE; Mon, 3 May 2004 08:29:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: from postal1.es.net (postal1.es.net [198.128.3.205]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 47D7243D2F; Mon, 3 May 2004 08:29:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from oberman@es.net) Received: from ptavv.es.net ([198.128.4.29]) by postal1.es.net (Postal Node 1) with ESMTP (SSL) id IBA74465; Mon, 03 May 2004 08:29:20 -0700 Received: from ptavv (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ptavv.es.net (Tachyon Server) with ESMTP id 744795D07; Mon, 3 May 2004 08:29:20 -0700 (PDT) To: Kris Kennaway In-reply-to: Your message of "Sun, 02 May 2004 19:33:21 PDT." <4095AF71.6080906@obsecurity.org> Date: Mon, 03 May 2004 08:29:20 -0700 From: "Kevin Oberman" Message-Id: <20040503152920.744795D07@ptavv.es.net> cc: freebsd-current@freebsd.org cc: Steve Kargl cc: haig@sylac.de cc: Joshua Boyd cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: missing libncurses.so.5 and other lib* X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 May 2004 15:29:21 -0000 > Date: Sun, 02 May 2004 19:33:21 -0700 > From: Kris Kennaway > Sender: owner-freebsd-current@freebsd.org > > Joshua Boyd wrote: > > >> If you have a /rescue directory (which you should), then > >> boot into single user mode and specify /rescue/sh as your > >> shell. I've been running CURRENT on my laptop since months before 5.0-Release and I think I've only had to resort to my backup once. If I had been luckier, it would have never happened. (And, if my timing had been a bit worse, it could have happened a LOT more often.) Until someone has been bitten, they almost never do backups and, after being bitten they get careless after a while. Takes a few bites (or a really nasty one) before the lesson is really learned. (Glances at laptop running dd(1) as we speak. Yes, I had already started it before reading this thread.) -- R. Takes a few bites (or a > really nasty one) before the lesson is really learned. I never lost a single thing to -CURRENT (lost a few "just modified" files to SoftUpdates/fsck default behavior, though) on my system for over half a decade -- in fact, I don't remember reinstalling since 1998 or so -- until an actual hardware failure recently. One CPU fan stopped and the temperatures got high enough I saw corruption of almost every partition on one hard drive (thankfully, though, not /home). I would never choose to equate running -CURRENT with "living dangerously." I know there are several cases in the past where certain drivers have been screwed up for a short period of time such that users of those less-ubiquitous devices would see that, but not stuff like normal IDE hard drives. -- Brian Fundakowski Feldman \'[ FreeBSD ]''''''''''\ <> green@FreeBSD.org \ The Power to Serve! \ Opinions expressed are my own. \,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,\ From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 3 09:58:45 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8A8F516A4CE for ; Mon, 3 May 2004 09:58:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp.rdsnet.ro (smtp.rdsnet.ro [62.231.74.130]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7CA7B43D41 for ; Mon, 3 May 2004 09:58:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from itetcu@apropo.ro) Received: (qmail 29210 invoked by uid 89); 3 May 2004 16:53:29 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO rdsnet.ro) (62.231.74.131) by 0 with SMTP; 3 May 2004 16:53:29 -0000 Received: (qmail 14846 invoked from network); 3 May 2004 16:58:40 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO buh.cameradicommercio.ro) (81.196.25.19) by mail.rdsnet.ro with SMTP; 3 May 2004 16:58:40 -0000 Received: from it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro (it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro [192.168.0.10]) by buh.cameradicommercio.ro (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3473E6130; Mon, 3 May 2004 19:58:00 +0300 (EEST) Received: from localhost (localhost.buh.cameradicommercio.ro [127.0.0.1]) by it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro (Postfix) with ESMTP id DA00F262; Mon, 3 May 2004 20:02:14 +0300 (EEST) Received: from it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro ([127.0.0.1])port 10024) with ESMTP id 65307-03; Mon, 3 May 2004 20:02:14 +0300 (EEST) Received: from it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro (localhost.buh.cameradicommercio.ro [127.0.0.1]) by it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro (Postfix) with SMTP id 61A1A24C; Mon, 3 May 2004 20:02:14 +0300 (EEST) Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 20:02:13 +0300 From: Ion-Mihai Tetcu To: Brian Fundakowski Feldman Message-Id: <20040503200213.1f2a2543@it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro> In-Reply-To: <200405031619.i43GJO9m005846@green.homeunix.org> References: <20040503152920.744795D07@ptavv.es.net> <200405031619.i43GJO9m005846@green.homeunix.org> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.10claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.2) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at it.buh.cameradicommercio.ro cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org cc: Kevin Oberman cc: Joshua Boyd cc: freebsd-current@freebsd.org cc: haig@sylac.de cc: Steve Kargl cc: Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: missing libncurses.so.5 and other lib* X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 May 2004 16:58:45 -0000 On Mon, 03 May 2004 12:19:24 -0400 Brian Fundakowski Feldman wrote: > "Kevin Oberman" wrote: > > > Date: Sun, 02 May 2004 19:33:21 -0700 > > > From: Kris Kennaway > > > Sender: owner-freebsd-current@freebsd.org [ ... about -current and danger ... ] > I would never choose to equate running -CURRENT with "living dangerously." > I know there are several cases in the past where certain drivers have been > screwed up for a short period of time such that users of those > less-ubiquitous devices would see that, but not stuff like normal IDE hard > drives. To do that, I loaded a normal parallel IDE drive, installed to it, and then used dump to move the install over to the SATA drive. Editing /etc/fstab to use ad4 instead of ad0 was the next step, and then finally setting the BIOS to boot from the SATA drive. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 4 07:53:40 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A15BA16A4CF for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 07:53:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp3.pacifier.net (smtp3.pacifier.net [64.255.237.173]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 684F043D2D for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 07:53:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from charles@coppersoftware.com) Received: from COPPERMAWXP (unknown [209.172.107.109]) by smtp3.pacifier.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id BDEE56E6A6; Tue, 4 May 2004 07:53:37 -0700 (PDT) From: "Charles Oppermann" To: "'Florian'" , Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 07:53:54 -0700 Organization: Copper Software MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.5510 In-Reply-To: Thread-Index: AcQwMCiLu7ZrSShxSCymLe/6ZEVSDABL7zcQ X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1409 Message-Id: <20040504145337.BDEE56E6A6@smtp3.pacifier.net> Subject: RE: Hang up on boot .. Only you can really answer that :) If you have files in other directories that are important, of course you should back them up. For example, not doing a full system backup will mean you have to spend a lot of time reinstalling from scratch, e.g. reinstalling all of your ports. Currently I am backing up all configuration information, since I spent too much time reading too many docs to set up my machine the way I want it. I cant go back and find the same docs and reread them if anything should happen to the machine. Infact I did lose data when I was running -stable but then I decided to switch to -current instead, so I had to reread all kinds of docs and redo my entire configuration all over again since -current and -stable currently dont do most of the things in the same way. My backup was therefore made moot. I havent otherwise lost any data and so I dont quite know what else is important. I just wanted to know what others were doing with respect to backups; atleast those who are taking backups. kaarthik From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 4 22:22:19 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30FC016A4CE for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 22:22:19 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.radford.edu (mail.radford.edu [137.45.126.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E56943D2D for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 22:22:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from boydjd@adelphia.net) Received: from virus-mail2.radford.edu (virus-mail2.radford.edu [137.45.126.11])i455MEa9018001 for ; Wed, 5 May 2004 01:22:14 -0400 (EDT) Received: FROM mail-in.radford.edu BY virus-mail2.radford.edu ; Wed May 05 01:22:36 2004 -0400 Received: from adelphia.net (dhcp-69-48.radford.edu [137.45.69.48]) i455MBZG009286; Wed, 5 May 2004 01:22:11 -0400 Message-ID: <409879F9.9050701@adelphia.net> Date: Wed, 05 May 2004 01:22:01 -0400 From: Joshua Boyd User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (X11/20040421) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Kaarthik Sivakumar References: <27069625$1083545780409598b48f99f4.24297031@config22.schlund.de> <20040503013317.GA70955@troutmask.apl.washington.edu> <4095A795.8070108@adelphia.net> <4095AF71.6080906@obsecurity.org> <86k6zro4o5.fsf_-_@comcast.net> <20040505045829.GA50931@xor.obsecurity.org> <86fzafo39e.fsf@comcast.net> In-Reply-To: <86fzafo39e.fsf@comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-current@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org cc: Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: Backups and all that X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 05 May 2004 05:22:19 -0000 Kaarthik Sivakumar wrote: >>>>"KK" == Kris Kennaway writes: >>>> >>>> >KK> On Wed, May 05, 2004 at 12:53:46AM -0400, Kaarthik Sivakumar wrote: > > >>>Actually I have been meaning to ask: what exactly do you backup? >>>Everybody and every doc says "backup the important stuff", but what >>>exactly in the system is important? Or is SATA only > supported in 5.x? > What can I do? >> FreeBSD supports some but not all ATA/SATA controllers. I believe release 5.2.1 has some support for the SiI 3112 chip but release 4.x does not. Your motherboard probably has a traditional parallel ATA interface. If so, you could do the installation on a regular ATA drive. (Which motherboard do you have?) Once you have installed FreeBSD 4.10 on the regular ATA drive, if you are feeling particularly adventuresome you could hack the FreeBSD 4.10 ATA driver to support the SiI 3112. It happens that PCI ATA controllers generally provide a similar programming interface. (See for exmaple the INCITS T13 unpublished draft "ATA/ATAPI Host Adapters Standard" or the Intel data sheets for ICHx cpu support chip sets.) All ATA adapters probably have their own individual quirks, but ATA adapters produced by the same manufacturer may tend to have the same quirks. SATA adapters are generally intended to work well enough with generic PCI ATA drivers as long as they mostly accept the controller configuration defaults. If you hack the FreeBSD 4.10 ATA driver to support the SiI 3112 as if it were an SiI 0680, you might get lucky. To do this, you must modify /sys/dev/ata/ata-pci.c to recognize the PCI device. In function ata_pci_match(), add the following case to the big switch statement: case 0x31121095: return "SiI 3112 SATA controller"; You might reasonably add it after the 0x31121095 case for the SiI 0680 controller. If you want the driver to attempt dma with this controller, you must add a case to function ata_dmainit() in /sys/dev/ata/ata-dma.c. Add this line: case 0x31121095: /* SiI 3112 SATA controller */ immediately before the line: case 0x06801095: /* SiI 0680 ATA133 controller */ You might also examine the release 5.2.1 ATA driver to see what it does specifically for the SiI 3112 SATA controller. I don't claim that these modifications to the ATA driver will work very well. I made them on my system (release 4.9) and it now sees the SiI 3112 SATA controller, but I have not yet dug up any spare SATA drives to test with the controller. Note that these modifications will not support the RAID features of your controller. I'm looking for something I have more control over and isn't bloated with alot of stuff I don't need... BSD is on the top of my list, there are only a few set backs for me to make the switch: 1) should I download and install the "new technology" releases or use the 4.x branch and what are the differences? 2) How do they differ (new tech/4.9)? 3) Are new technology (eg. 5.2.x) considered the unstable branch? 4) Can freebsd use a linux swap space? 5) What is this geometry bug and can it be fixed How? This would at least be dual-boot windows and possibly linux for a little familiarity. So this geometry problem has not allowed me to partition the disk using linux and windows programs afterwards and it sems to have currupted the partition table because there is no visible. However, I read both, and will cc: this over so that anything I say that's dumb will get shot down (hopefully before it causes you grief ;-) ) I have had no issues with the 5.X branch, and it will, sooner or later, be the STABLE branch of development, and 4.X will fade into RAM... For me, the most notable difference is that 5.X does background file system checking in the even of improper shutdown, thus speeding up the boot process. It also has a new boot menu with more options, although I've not had cause to use this much, maybe at all. I won't comment on ufs2; it hasn't been default on my installs, so I am running on ufs (the elder file system). The kernel structure is a little different; 5.x is a very modular thing compared to 4.x. PERL in 5.x is 5.6.1 as opposed to 5.0003 ... there was talk of moving PERL out of the base system; but apparently this hasn't happened yet, as perl is still in /usr/bin instead of /usr/local/bin... Please keep in mind this is me talking, and I'm not official or even Real Knowledgeable (tm)on such matters... >2) How do they differ (new tech/4.9)? > > Is this the same as #1? Or was #1 asking only about installation. In my experience, installation hasn't changed much at all between 4.x and 5.x >3) Are new technology (eg. 5.2.x) considered the unstable branch? > > Not exactly, but maybe, sort of. The "cutting edge" chapter of the handbook (www.freebsd.org/handbook) will give you some insight into this area. It's not exactly that the OS is "unstable" in 5.X --- there are a few issues still in transition (you mention GEOM, others report some ACPI issues on some mobos, watchdog timeouts on Intel Gigabit Ether cards (I think...?), problems with ufs2 (only hearsay AFAIAmConcered....) --- the real point, at least according to one committer I've talked to, is that 5.X/CURRENT is simply still in development, and it might be possible that someone would, prior to 5.X being deemed STABLE instead of CURRENT, create changes in the codebase that would require everyone to rebuild not only their kernel/userland, but potentially every piece of 3rd party software on a system. Now, I'd consider this fairly unlikely, but it's possible from what he said. In contrast, if anyone committed such a change to the branch after it becomes the STABLE branch (or to 4.X now), he would likely be taken out and flogged, or stapled to the flagpole at Microsoft HQ, or given an extra commit bit or something equally horrifying... >4) Can freebsd use a linux swap space? >5) What is this geometry bug and can it be fixed How? > >This would at least be dual-boot windows and possibly linux for a little >familiarity. Hi! Well, depends on what you want/need. For your desktop, or some station to simply play around with it, the new tech release is fine, and stable enough for everydays use. It also is (as newbie) the better thing to learn, when you in any case have to learn FreeBSD. > 2) How do they differ (new tech/4.9)? 4.x to 5.x has a remodelled rc structure, its been remodelled in 5.x towards a bit more modularity. Also under the hood are the most changes, like better SMP, new scheduler, etc. Visible to the end-user are in most cases only the different rc. structure, and that some things like devfs make static devices obsolete, and that some commands like disklabel have been replaced by newer programs like bsdlabel. So basically no biiig deal, but significant to newbies... > 3) Are new technology (eg. 5.2.x) considered the unstable branch? Its not like debian, at least not exactly. In terms of maturity etc., yes, you could think of it as kind of "unstable", alas it does not reflect the actual differences, as 4.x and 5.x are completely different branches with different kernels... > 4) Can freebsd use a linux swap space? No. > 5) What is this geometry bug and can it be fixed How? > Hmm, geometry issues are a lot, my notebook also has some messed-up geometry (thanks, Compaq) and I cannot dual-boot FreeBSD and WinXP, which would sometimes a nice feature @work. A colleague managed some dirty tricks with partition magic and Suse 8, but I cannot recommend this. Another approach would be the purchase of some different disk, and put it in the box. For testing purposes I use personally some old and cheap SCSI-disks, and some used controller, that you can get on ebay for about 20 bucks altogether. 2 GB is ok for text mode, and one of my graphical workstations with X11 has a 4GB disk in and more than 1GB free. So you would bypass geometry bugs, since the bootloader has not to deal with geometry and can point to another disk. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member.
