(do you really want to mail the freebsd webmasters?) http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies Welcome to FreeBSD! This list is a gathering place for people new to FreeBSD. Please feel free to share your experiences with others on this list. Support questions should be sent to freebsd-questions@freebsd.org. (hmmm. looks like they don't provide support) anyhow. the short story is that, for 99.87% of the questions you're likely to have, freebsd-questions is the right place. please don't spam the other lists. good luck getting your flash audio working. i'm sure that someone will eventually be able to help you out. cheers, epi p.s. another good habit to develop is taking the time to search the archives. this question may already have been answered for another user. i am not saying that it has, but you never know until you look. ;) to reach the archives for any list, check out the link on its summary page. *** To any posters who may reply to this thread: please exclude the other lists going forward. gracias. *** > Paulo. >=20 > On Sun, 11 Jul 2004 13:17:29 +0200, Arjan Van Leeuwen =20 > wrote: >=20 > > Hi Paolo, > > > > You don't need the linuxpluginwrapper if you're using linux-opera, > > only if you're using FreeBSD Opera. I had a *hell* of a time trying to get FreeBSD 5.2.1 installed on a = Netserver E60. PII 450 SCSI During the agp0 probe the system would lock up tight. Here's what I did. Made some floppies, (since they don't have AGP = support on them) Booted System, went thru the whole install and then = right before Exiting Install, I ran an Emergency Shell on TTY4. Then I FTP'd the gunziped kernel file into /boot/kernel. Then rebooted = system. (From another 5.2.1 box) System came up fine (no lockup) but now I have no ethernet, yet the std = boot and mfsroot floppies do have an Intel nic driver on them that = works, after all I used the floppy boot discs to FTP the floppy kernel = onto my scsi HD. Geesh, what an ordeal. (If you didn't know how to go about it as I = didn't) What am I doing wrong? Is this the wrong way? I tried to let the HD boot = up to the loader prompt after the 5.2.1 install and then set = currdev=3D/dev/fd0 and then do a load kernel (this did not work), and = then to a setcurrdev=3D so I can boot from it but no luck. Anyway my machine is up but it's pretty useless without Network... Tips, pointers, misc. info would be much appreciated. I tunnel port 10000 to my localhost and connect to wemin like this: http://127.0.0.1:10000 I always connect to webmin this way, with all *nix machines I admin. This does not seem to work with FreeBSD 5.2.1. It does work out of the box for other versions (4.7 and 4.8 at least) of FreeBSD though. Is there some rule somewhere preventing port forwarding in 5.2? This box has a Realtek RTL 8139/8139C/8139C+ (according to lspci) nic. On the linux kernel and obv windows, i have no problem, but when i pop in the freebsd install disc and start the install process the nic indicator on my router goes from green to orange. I can ping the box and ping from the box around my lan but when i try and ping the outside world, i get nothing. I've searched around on google but i cant find that much information regarding freebsd and this nic. i did read it was supported but i cant seem to get it to work. If im best off buying a new card then ill do that but id rather not have to. I assume you have a DHCP server or = have manually typed in the IP address for your FreeBSD machine. Perhaps = it's a DNS issue. Ping www.yahoo.com from another machine (NOT all = "world" or Internet hosts allow ping or ICMP - yahoo does) Note the IP address that = your other machine resolves www.yahoo.com into. Take this IP number and = try pinging it? Try and ping your router or def gate from the BSD box. . . You state your router goes from green to orange, there may also be an = incorrect speed/duplex negotiation going on somewhere. I have always had good luck with 3com cards. I downloaded the fixit, kern & mfsroot floppies and feed them to the machine as they're requested. Problem is that when I get to the kernel modules configuration, there is no driver for my network card, 3Com3c905 PCI. I checked the hardware notes at http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.10R/hardware-i386.html and http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=xl&sektion=4&manpath=FreeBSD+4.10-RELEASE and the card I'm trying to use is definitely supported but I see no way to make it available to the installation process and I couldn't find a drivers floppy for the 4.10 release. How do I make the "xl(4)" driver available to the install process? A little guidance or referral to a faq would be greatly appreciated. It was the exact kernel from the floppy boot = (floppy.flp) 5.2.1 Release. When I use 5.2.1 boot, and 5.2.1 msfroot to load the machine the Ether = adapter is there, and works. When I take the 5.2.1 floppy boot kernel copyt it the HD under = /boot/kernel the machine boots but no NIC. How can I add it back in??? All technical questions and replies should be sent to freebsd-questions. Also, things are rarely ever this hard with bsd; when it is this hard, it's likely that you may be missing a simpler answer. I'm not forwarding this to questions at this point, as I believe they will want more info. For instance, you don't mention what NIC you have nor what is using the agp driver. They'll probably want at least that. The boot output may be useful to include as well (use dmesg to get the output). When you do write questions@, you shouldn't need to subscribe as you should be CC'ed on any replies. The only special thing you should do is try to wrap lines in email at 72 characters to make things easier for a reader using an old mail program. With all that said, I suspect that your BIOS settings may be causing the problem. You may need to re-visit those and check for things like plug'n'play or devices requesting the same resources, which can cause problems. Note, this isn't meant as advice, just my first thought of what may be happening. However, the FAK ( http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/ ) states: "There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately." After some discussion between list members and Sue (an advocate for the newbies list, and probably the only source of "authority" here), we had come to a few decisions for what to do with technical posts here. (See the list archives for more info on that thread.) In that conversation, we had expanded the FAK's idea of "someone" in the above statement. She had indicated that "more knowledgeable list members" should try to sort out these problems. (Not that I'm more knowledgeable on any of the technical matters, but I have read the FAK, which assures that we shouldn't see the questions here in the first place. More knowledgeable in that sense.) The idea of doing so privately seemed the worst solution to me, giving no advice and leaving the thread open. With some free time this morning, and noticing that quite a few technical questions had been asked here, I thought I'd give some time to clean up the list a little and redirect proper questions to questions@, or give advice on writing a more complete email. (I could've given links to official documentation here, but couldn't think of any relevant articles.) Regards, Clayton PS. I'm not trying to make those who hadn't read the list charter feel bad (with this or other emails), just to help the questions get to a proper forum. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 9 Dial-up Internet Access helps fight spam and pop-ups – now 2 months FREE! http://join.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/ From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 12 20:25:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EE81816A4CE for ; Mon, 12 Jul 2004 20:25:28 +0000 (GMT) Received: from godzilla.vipstructures.com (godzilla.vipstructures.com [216.175.208.252]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C46A943D48 for ; Mon, 12 Jul 2004 20:25:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from etoll@vipstructures.com) Received: from localhost (localhost.vipstructures.com [127.0.0.1]) by godzilla.vipstructures.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 32BFD28480 for ; Mon, 12 Jul 2004 16:25:28 -0400 (EDT) Received: from godzilla.vipstructures.com ([127.0.0.1])port 10024) with ESMTP id 28853-01 for ; Mon, 12 Jul 2004 16:25:26 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mothra.vipstructures.com (mothra.vipstructures.com [192.168.1.3]) by godzilla.vipstructures.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2DAF928440 for ; Mon, 12 Jul 2004 16:25:26 -0400 (EDT) content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 16:25:26 -0400 Message-ID: <9BC86C67C3AF7646B9C5382020457A9456DE6A@VIP10-WIN2K> From: "Eric Toll" To: "clayton rollins" X-Antivirus: checked by Norton Anti Virus X-MTA-Mailer: Postfix 2 by Wietse Venema - http://www.postfix.org X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on godzilla.vipstructures.com cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: RE: SSH port forwarding and Webmin X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 20:25:29 -0000 =20 > -----Original Message----- > From: clayton rollins [mailto:crollins666@hotmail.com]=20 > Sent: Monday, July 12, 2004 4:17 PM > To: Eric Toll > Cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org > Subject: RE: SSH port forwarding and Webmin >=20 >=20 > On July 12, 2004, "Eric Toll" wrote: > > > >Are you a moderator? > > >=20 > No. As far as I know, there's no moderator for -newbies. >=20 > However, the FAK ( > http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/ ) states: > "There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these=20 > problems out privately." >=20 > After some discussion between list members and Sue (an=20 > advocate for the newbies list, and probably the only source=20 > of "authority" here), we had come to a few decisions for what=20 > to do with technical posts here. And yet still others might be offended by your forceful imposition of superstition on them. Not everyone takes the Christian Bible literally, if they even believe in it. And yet still others might take offense to your narrow-minded assumption that it was even in reference to anything remotely religious or anti-religious. Symbols formerly considered 'evil' or whatever are often used in counterculture -- liking a 'dark-sounding' band or something doesn't make one Satanic. Alternatively (though not very likely), maybe he was simply commemorating when Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" topped the charts, or the first descent of the "Great West Canyon," or maybe even the Marine Corp's Operation Jay in Vietnam -- in June of 1966. The point is that you don't know, you're assuming. That, and that this whole thing is a stupid tangent. The FAK and mailing list charter and all that make the point that this is not a tech support forum. Your problems with any individual here are moot points -- you need to be somewhere else. I don't have a clue, but I think it's a linux only thing. Now I have already made a backup of the working kernel. what I need to know is when I get the boot loader menu(when it counts from 1 to 10) is there any way in which I can Include another option for my Custom Kernel. I want the default to remain as the working kernel... and I want an option for my Custom kernel in the menu... (2) Secondly I dont understand the boot prompt and the loader prompt completely. at the boot prompt I guess I can specify the kernel I want to load. So lets say I have my custom kernel in the directory /boot/mydir/custom-kernel. so how do I specify at the boot prompt or the loader prompt to load the custom kernel (3) And finally I had downloaded the source code of freeBSD and I configured, did a make and a make install without making any changes ...(Just to get it started!) ... when I rebooted the system it failed to recognize the disk and so I reinstalled FreeBSD again...( hadnt enabled any debug options so could not recover any information!!)... Is there anything that "HAS" to be done before installing the new kernel? any help will be appreciated. Thank you HKR --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. The connection to the net is not automatic - especially with ADSL. If you have another machine that already sets up the connection, you could share it (I do it from time to time with my wife's PC that runs WinXP - please don't flame :-) )In this case a command like the folowing can help: route add -net 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 assuming 192.168.0.1 is the address of the gateway. I suggest you check the command ppp - except that the script that comes with the distribution does not always work. I attach another one Josh wrote: >Hi, > >I'm very new to freebsd, i have managed installing and setting up dhcp, but i cant access the net. > > First of all, welcome to the BSD world! Do you mean DHCP client? >i can get to my modem web config all good and fine, but can't access sites. > > You seem to have a clever modem. I wonder whether a simple: route add -net 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.137 (assuming the last field is the IP address of your modem) could do the job. Another thing to investigate is DNS. Try pinging 66.94.230.36 (that's www.yahoo.com): if it replies, your problem is the DNS. >is there a program within bsd to diagnose this? > >i used ifconfig but that means nothing. > > Option -a of ifconfig may give you some additional advice - except that if you don't have a bare ADSL modem, you may not need tunnelling so you may not have a tun0 entry in the list. Try pinging the modem and the IP address of your service provider's gateway. This will give you some advice regarding the connection itself. Can you access this one?: http://216.136.204.117/ It's www.freebsd.org IP so if you can access by IP number it is likely that your resolver isn't configured. >is there a program within bsd to diagnose this? > >i used ifconfig but that means nothing. Means nothing to you perhaps but its output would help other list subscribers to help you. You should send your question to questions@freebsd.org where all technical questions should go, and you should include as much information as you can eg. the output of 'ifconfig -a', 'cat /etc/resolv.conf', 'netstat -rn' and 'uname -a'. >i am new soz. I've been away for a few days, but didn't see a reply to your message to the list. The "Kernel Configuration" is basically a legacy screen for legacy hardware. The xl(4) driver is built into the GENERIC kernel, and you have no need to do anything during setup to enable the card. HTH, Kevin Kinsey DaleCo, S.P. I've noticed this is a very frequent misunderstanding here. The term "newbies" implies that people new to FreeBSD would find some help on the list. It's difficult to determine how useful a list is for newbies which just offers moral - not technical - support, but I like the idea anyway. Perhaps this would be better as a moderated list, with an auto-ack that has a brief FAQ about the purpose of the list? It's low traffic enough that it wouldn't be difficult. Heck, I'll even offer to help moderate it (I have experience), but the technical aspects of setting it to work that way, though simple, would have to be handled by the list owner. Is this a silly suggestion, or does anyone else think a moderated list would work better? - jt From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 17 17:58:32 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EA60516A4CE for ; Sat, 17 Jul 2004 17:58:32 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp814.mail.sc5.yahoo.com (smtp814.mail.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.170.84]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 8C92343D2D for ; Sat, 17 Jul 2004 17:58:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from krinklyfig@spymac.com) Received: from unknown (HELO smogmonster.com) (jtinnin@pacbell.net@64.173.26.85 with login) by smtp814.mail.sc5.yahoo.com with SMTP; 17 Jul 2004 17:58:32 -0000 From: Joshua Tinnin To: "FreeBSD-newbies" Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2004 10:59:29 -0700 User-Agent: KMail/1.6.2 References: <20040712165921.62416.qmail@web41509.mail.yahoo.com> <40F93607.7080902@daleco.biz> <200407171023.34839.krinklyfig@spymac.com> In-Reply-To: <200407171023.34839.krinklyfig@spymac.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200407171059.29493.krinklyfig@spymac.com> Subject: Re: Newbies list (was: Re: Drivers floppy for FreeBSD 4.10 - Need xl(4) driver to do FTP install...from floppies) X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: krinklyfig@spymac.com List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2004 17:58:33 -0000 OK, I see that my questions about a moderated list have been covered previously (mea culpa for not searching the archives). My concerns are: does it work? can I hack it for my own purposes? does it suit my needs? etc. The politics aside from the basics about open source can distract from the practical uses of the technology. For instance, Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman tend to disagree on some fundamental philosophical issues, but it's not as if they haven't helped create some very useful stuff in the meantime (even if Richard still insists people call it GNU/Linux). > i have a few questions/concerns > > 1. I want a usable workstation & i want to prevent > script-kiddies ripping thru my system. Is OpenBSD necessary? Not necessarily. FreeBSD is already very secure, but if you're that concerned, then I recommend setting up a separate box with OpenBSD to act as a firewall. Are you in a situation where you need very high security? This is where OpenBSD excels: security, and your network will be more secure by design if you do firewalling on its own dedicated machine. Also, OpenBSD's excellent firewall, pf, has been ported to FreeBSD 5.x. FreeBSD is not as picky about code improvements (the team at OpenBSD analyzes every line of code before committing, which does take some time), therefore you're more likely to get a better all-around workstation with a FreeBSD system than an OpenBSD system, depending on what you want to do on it. For example, FreeBSD can work on more hardware than OpenBSD, and you can still use XFree86 or X.org, and whatever window manager you like (sometimes I prefer using IceWM, and other times I prefer KDE, so they're both installed and used on my system, and I just switched from XFree86 to X.org today). Generally, FreeBSD is a server platform, but its stability and compatibility with Linux makes it a good workstation choice, as well. I was originally going to set up this box to be an OpenBSD workstation, not having used *BSD before but wanting a secure system, but it wouldn't recognize my network card (it's fairly new, but it's very common). The choice was made for me, but I'm happier for it. In time, I'm planning on setting up another box to be used as a firewall with OpenBSD. > 2. What if x86 goes out-of-fashion? what happens then? > Should i move to NetBSD? What happens? Good question ... However, in such a situation, I doubt that FreeBSD would just sit on x86 and let it go at that. NetBSD is known for its wide hardware compatibility, but it trades off stability to accomplish this. It's great for tricky/odd/old hardware and embedded systems, but it's not so great as a workstation or for webserving where stability is crucial, IMO. You should also know that FreeBSD supports SMP and 64-bit CPUs. > 3. Will i get a job if i learn FreeBSD & neglect the > inner-workings of Linux? Another good question. Something you might want to consider is that FreeBSD is very popular as a webserver. It's consistently and often profusely listed in Netcraft's longest uptime list: http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html Hotmail used FreeBSD for a long time, and they may still use it. They don't like to talk about it much, but it's not a rumor ... Anyway, I would consider using FreeBSD to be extending your skillset (but you should know I've become enamored with FreeBSD since installing it, and so sometimes I evangelize about it). Since you're coming from Linux, you'll probably still use a lot of Linux apps on your FreeBSD system, and you'll likely learn a thing or two about both systems because of it. It's not all that different - they are, after all, both *nix systems. And you can easily do a multi-boot system ... well, it depends on some factors, but it's not difficult. Mine is tri-boot: FreeBSD, Slackware and Win2k. No need to dump what you have, but I would recommend giving FreeBSD a shot. It may not be the right workstation OS for you, but there's a good chance you'll come to like it more than anything you've used so far ... ah, see, there's that evangelizing coming through ;) - jt
