However there's a problem when I import an existing presentation into simpress. When viewed at 100%, the fonts look fine; but when viewed at any other scaling (including when running a slideshow, or printing to a postscript file), the spacing is completely wrong and looks a mess. The attached .ppt file demonstrates the problem; the attached .ps file is the result from 'print handouts' and gives an idea what I see on my screen when I have a non-100% zoom. The further out I zoom, the worse it looks. Note that the original file actually came from Applix but was exported as PowerPoint 97 format. I don't think this is relevant though, because how OpenOffice displays the file depends on what zoom level you select; which to my mind makes it definitely a problem with the rendering, not the source. However, it's not at all clear to me whether this is a bug in FreeBSD, XFree86, X fonts, the JVM, or OpenOffice itself; and so I'd appreciate if someone else could try replicating this problem on a different platform. Misc information: * I tried applying the rtld-symlookup.diff patch to my ld-elf; the patch did not apply cleanly, I made it fit by hand, but unfortunately found that my system broke after installing the new ld-elf.so.1 (it would not even start KDE, complaining about missing symbols in libraries that were definitely there), so I rolled back to the original one. * I presumably have some sort of Java VM available on my machine, but I've no idea what or where it is :-) Does OpenOffice come with its own VM? I did compile jdk-1.3 (I think) a long time ago, it took hours to build from ports, but I thought I had removed it afterwards. There's certainly no 'javac' on my box at the moment. $ locate jdk | grep -v ports $ ls /usr/local/lib/*jdk* ls: /usr/local/lib/*jdk*: No such file or directory $ ls /usr/local/lib/*java* /usr/local/lib/libkjava.la /usr/local/lib/libkjava.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libkjava.so $ pkg_info -W /usr/local/lib/libkjava.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libkjava.so.1 was installed by package kdelibs-3.1 $ Hmm, I doubt that's it...! The port is under construction at the moment. I told is explicitly to use my installed java: make CONFIGURE_ARGS+="--with-jdk-home=/usr/local/jdk1.4.2" which solves that problem, but I haven't gotten it all the way built yet, so I can't be sure that's all you need to know. This particular problem seems to be caused by the makefile using JDKDIR and JAVAVM before defining them. It looks like the definitions should be able to just get moved up, so I'm trying that, but it hasn't gotten far yet. Building OpenOffice is a huge effort anyway; the port isn't kidding about needing 4GB free for build space, and it takes a long time. On the system I'm trying to build it on, I have a slow processor and insufficient disk space, so I'm mounting the port and the build space over the network. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a week to build. Yeah, our build machines (P4 2GHz/512M and AthlonXP 2200+) on reasonably fast ATA drives both spend 10+ hours to build OO 1.1 during local package build process... I do in fact have a working (~2 week old update) of jdk14, and make has already checked this. As requested, I'm attaching the build log, the config.log, and the output of `ls /var/db/pkg`. Essentially all tools that work on the ports tree as a whole assume a certain uniformity in ports Makefiles, which goes beyond just compiling and installing without errors. Non-adherence to these standards makes it hard to write tools that work for all ports and hinders progress, because small changes in bsd.port.mk may break your port. >How-To-Repeat: I checked the current ports tree assuming the following rules: 1.) A port is a slave port if and only if MASTERDIR != .CURDIR 2.) Slave ports shout define MASTERDIR using one of the following lines: MASTERDIR= ${.CURDIR}/../..// MASTERDIR= ${.CURDIR}/../ MASTERDIR= ${PORTSDIR}// 3.) Non-slave ports shouldn't define MASTERDIR at all 4.) The last line of a slave port's Makefile has to be include "${MASTERDIR}/Makefile" 5.) The last line of a non-slave ports Makefile must be one of: include include 6.) slave ports may not include bsd.port(.pre).mk These rules are more or less checked by portlint and described in: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/porting-masterdir.html http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/dads-after-port-mk.html In most cases a violation of these rules is an attempt to work around the structure of bsd.port.mk. Even though this may be an easy solution for the needs of your port, please think about an other way to do it. >Fix: Sometimes there are simply some comment lines at the end of the Makefile. Please move or delete them. If you do not know how to fix the port, ask at ports@FreeBSD.org or don't hesitate to contact me. If there is currently no other way to do what you need for installing the port, this may be an area where bsd.port.mk has to be improved, and it is important that we become aware of this fact. Please fix your port(s) and mark the fixed ports with an `X' in the list below (just edit-pr 64393 ale@FreeBSD.org [ ] devel/motor (5) clement@FreeBSD.org [ ] databases/py-MySQLdb (5) My locale is ru_RU.KOI8-R, thats I compiled OO with USE_LANG=ru_RU.KOI8-R option. The problem is saving russian documents in openoffice-swriter using RTF file format. If I create new document and type russian words, everything is just fine. But after saving the document in RTF format and reopen it, I see russian text in wrong charset. The charset looks like win1251. System: FreeBSD-5.2.1, XFree86-4.4.0 (binary install), jdk-1.4.2-p6, kde-3.2.1. PS. I am not a ports-subscriber. Please, reply to my email address. Or I must subscribe to the list to write to? I can't remember why I thought it would, either; it doesn't actually affect the configure script. I won't get more time to work on it for a few days, and by then there may be more changes to the port. System: FreeBSD-5.2.1-p2, XFree86-4.4.0, locale ru_RU.KOI8-R. My experiments with russian showed, that working in pure text (saving in text format): 1. Encoding koi8-r saving and reopenning -- yes. 2. Encoding win1251, save as "encoded text" -- russian letters in text file replaced by "?". Opening file in true win1251 is not working. 3. Encoding dos (866 code page), save as "encoded text" -- OO uses wrong translation table. i.e. OO reopen text file and shows the original text in russian, but text file on disk is not in dos/866CP. Opening file in true dos/866CP is not working. Further experiments with converting russian words in SXW, DOC and RTF formats (open in one and save in another): 1. From SXW to DOC - yes, to RTF - no. 2. From DOC to SXW - yes, to RTF - yes. 3. From RTF to SXW - no/yes, to DOC - no/yes. (no/yes I'll explain later) The effect of wrong russian encoding (my two days ago letter) after saving new file in RTF format does exist. I found workaround -- save new blank file in RTF format, close, reopen it. Then russian is OK in further saving, reopening. Time to explain "no/yes" results. In starting new file, saving it in RTF format, then saving in other (DOC, SXW) format, the encoding in file on disk becomes wrong. But if use my "workaround", saving in other formats are good. What am I to do? So I went ahead and did what it told me to - I downloaded all the Linux Java stuff from the Sun site. Then I got a message to the effect that I should have compiled the FreeBSD Java instead. However, that message has scrolled off of my screen - the machine got impatient with me and started compiling the FreeBSD Java port. So now, uh, what should I do? Is my system going to be broken in the morning? ~ Jason
