I have been wondering for a while what change in -CURRENT actually broke the openoffice-1.1 port. When I last tried to compile the port on my system, it died at the very same point as your build. I was able to get mozilla to compile by simply cd'ing into the slave port directory and running "make clean && make" in there. So, the problem must be with some flag being passed from the main port's make to the mozilla slave port's make. Now, the curious thing here is that the ports actually use gmake. How > can that be affected by changes to FreeBSD's own make? The change to FreeBSD's make is supposed to have made it conform to POSIX. When CFLAGS (or any other variable) is specified on the command line, this variable assignment is also stashed in the MAKEFLAGS environment variable, which gets passed to all the submakes, and keeps CFLAGS (or whatever) from being modified by doing variable assignments in the Makefiles. Maybe gmake already behaved this way and the only reason we didn't have this problem before was that FreeBSD's make didn't pass MAKEFLAGS through the environment to the top level gmake. This apparently happens when the main port is trying to build the mozilla subport. It first spawns a make to build the "mozilla" target in /usr/ports/editors/openoffice-1.1/files/Makefile.mozilla - at this point, no additional command line arguments are passed. However, Makefile.mozilla doesn't quite build the subport itself, it delegates the job to yet another make. And it does this by calling: @cd ${WRKDIR}/mozilla ; ${MAKE} CXX="${CXX}" CC="${CC}" CFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" USE_GCC=${USE_GCC} build WRKDIRPREFIX="" This is the only place where command line arguments get appended. So my guess is that at this point, some variables (most notably CFLAGS) get set and cast in stone while gmake might expect to be able to change them later on. For example, look at the following file: /usr/ports/editors/openoffice-1.1/work/mozilla/work/mozilla/nsprpub/config/config.mk You will find these two lines: CFLAGS = $(CC_ONLY_FLAGS) $(OPTIMIZER) $(OS_CFLAGS)\ $(XP_DEFINE) $(DEFINES) $(INCLUDES) $(XCFLAGS) If this doesn't work, then no wonder heaps of defines, includes and other flags miraculously disappear from the command used to compile now.c. The easiest fix would seem to be to force the FreeBSD make that gets called with command line parameters to *not* pass those on in MAKEFLAGS. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any information in the man page on how to do that. In gmake, passing on is default, but can be disabled by "unexporting" certain variables. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 12 03:44:42 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6050916A4CE; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 03:44:42 +0000 (GMT) Received: from dd2718.kasserver.com (dd2718.kasserver.com [81.209.184.159]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 931C243D39; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 03:44:41 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@chillt.de) Received: from [192.168.0.7] (dsl-082-083-143-154.arcor-ip.net [82.83.143.154]) by dd2718.kasserver.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8338D25FA3; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 05:44:39 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <411AE7B3.5020009@chillt.de> Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 05:44:51 +0200 From: Bartosz Fabianowski User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.3 (X11/20040807) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bartosz Fabianowski References: <200408120119.i7C1JRbC018760@gw.catspoiler.org> <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> In-Reply-To: <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------020004010106010702010508" cc: Don Lewis cc: openoffice@FreeBSD.org Subject: -CURRENT fixes (was: Re: openoffice-1.1 build more broken thanusual on 5.2-CURRENT) X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 03:44:42 -0000 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------020004010106010702010508 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The following patch two patches make openoffice-1.1 at least start compiling on -CURRENT for me again. I don't know yet if the build will finish successfully, as it will take the whole night on my machine. One of the patches simply removes the "BROKEN" keyword, of course. The other patch prevents the main port's makefile from passing CFLAGS on the command line to the mozilla sub port's make. This is necessary, because once passed on the command line, the CFLAGS become pretty much read-only, while the mozilla sub port expects to be able to change them at will. This patch shouldn't cause any loss in functionality for the fragile build system, because the main port didn't actually modify the CFLAGS in any way as far as I can tell, so the passing was unnecessary to begin with. Now, if my approach is totally wrong, feel free to correct me. I have never hacked on makefiles and I am not even pretending to understand what I'm doing here :). - Bartosz --------------020004010106010702010508 Content-Type: text/plain; name="patch-openoffice-1.1-Makefile" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="patch-openoffice-1.1-Makefile" --- Makefile.orig Thu Aug 12 05:31:32 2004 +++ Makefile Thu Aug 12 05:31:43 2004 @@ -53,10 +53,6 @@ helpcontent_90_unix.tgz .endif -.if ${OSVERSION} > 502010 -BROKEN= "Does not compile on 5-current" -.endif - COMMENT?= Integrated wordprocessor/dbase/spreadheet/drawing/chart/browser BUILD_NR= 645 --------------020004010106010702010508 Content-Type: text/plain; name="patch-openoffice-1.1-files-Makefile.mozilla" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="patch-openoffice-1.1-files-Makefile.mozilla" --- Makefile.mozilla.orig Thu Aug 12 05:33:02 2004 +++ Makefile.mozilla Thu Aug 12 05:33:13 2004 @@ -21,9 +21,9 @@ < ${WRKDIR}/mozilla/Makefile.new > ${WRKDIR}/mozilla/Makefile .endif .if defined(USE_GCC) - @cd ${WRKDIR}/mozilla ; ${MAKE} CXX="${CXX}" CC="${CC}" CFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" USE_GCC=${USE_GCC} build WRKDIRPREFIX="" + @cd ${WRKDIR}/mozilla ; ${MAKE} CXX="${CXX}" CC="${CC}" USE_GCC=${USE_GCC} build WRKDIRPREFIX="" .else - @cd ${WRKDIR}/mozilla ; ${MAKE} CXX="${CXX}" CC="${CC}" CFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" build WRKDIRPREFIX="" + @cd ${WRKDIR}/mozilla ; ${MAKE} CXX="${CXX}" CC="${CC}" build WRKDIRPREFIX="" .endif @${CP} ${FILESDIR}/zipmoz.sh ${WRKDIR} @${CHMOD} 755 ${WRKDIR}/zipmoz.sh --------------020004010106010702010508-- From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 12 05:00:30 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6424316A4CF for ; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 05:00:30 +0000 (GMT) Received: from gw.catspoiler.org (217-ip-163.nccn.net [209.79.217.163]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 06CE143D1F for ; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 05:00:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from truckman@FreeBSD.org) Received: from FreeBSD.org (mousie.catspoiler.org [192.168.101.2]) by gw.catspoiler.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7C50GIK019140; Wed, 11 Aug 2004 22:00:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from truckman@FreeBSD.org) Message-Id: <200408120500.i7C50GIK019140@gw.catspoiler.org> Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2004 22:00:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Don Lewis To: freebsd@chillt.de In-Reply-To: <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/plain; charset=us-ascii cc: openoffice@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: openoffice-1.1 build more broken than usual on 5.2-CURRENT X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 05:00:30 -0000 On 12 Aug, Bartosz Fabianowski wrote: > > [...] When CFLAGS (or any other variable) is specified on the command > > line, this variable assignment is also stashed in the MAKEFLAGS > > environment variable, which gets passed to all the sub makes, [...] > > If this is the root of the problem, then there must be some point in the > chain of make invocations where it's called with additional command line > arguments that then get passed on to gmake and screw up the build. > > This apparently happens when the main port is trying to build the > mozilla subport. Actually, we'd probably want to get them into $(OPTIMIZER), though that's not really correct for things like -pipe. I also don't know how to cancel a variable definition once it finds its way into MAKEFLAGS. Hmm... passing OPTIMIZER the way you suggest only makes sense if it's something that gets used inside the mozilla sub port. And even then, if mozilla is not optimized properly, that should not hurt too much, as it's only used for address book synchronization anyway. Plus, since the main port doesn't actually touch CFLAGS but derives them from the environment (/etc/make.conf), so will the subport. It should be able to derive any OPTMIZIER settings it needs by itself. Passing them from the main port is not the right way of doing it I think. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 12 13:54:56 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B65CD16A4CE; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 13:54:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from dd2718.kasserver.com (dd2718.kasserver.com [81.209.184.159]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B3F243D55; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 13:54:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@chillt.de) Received: from [192.168.0.7] (dsl-082-083-133-186.arcor-ip.net [82.83.133.186]) by dd2718.kasserver.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C08DA232F4; Thu, 12 Aug 2004 15:54:54 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 15:55:11 +0200 From: Bartosz Fabianowski User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.3 (X11/20040807) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bartosz Fabianowski References: <200408120119.i7C1JRbC018760@gw.catspoiler.org> <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> <411AE7B3.5020009@chillt.de> In-Reply-To: <411AE7B3.5020009@chillt.de> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: Don Lewis cc: openoffice@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: -CURRENT fixes X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 13:54:56 -0000 Well, replying to myself, after a night of compilation, I can confirm that the trivial CFLAGS removal makes openoffice-1.1 compile and install nicely on -CURRENT. The build process died on me twice, with a gcc32 segfault and with an unterminated #IFDEF. In both cases, I just re-ran make and it continued from the point where it had died. That's nothing openoffice specific, it's just the way it has been with -CURRENT for a while now. So it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Programs just randomly die on -CURRENT, it's bleeding edge after all ;). The only issue I noticed so far is that 1.1.2 tells me it's a different language port than my 1.1.1 was (while, in fact, both are EN_US) and thus, it refuses to import my settings :(. I guess that this is not a problem specific to -CURRENT though. So, if anybody can verify that the patch works, maybe it could be comitted and the port unbroken? The patch should also work for other versions of openoffice in the ports tree by the way. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 13 03:10:34 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 230B216A4CE; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 03:10:34 +0000 (GMT) Received: from satie.private.org (YahooBB219196184076.bbtec.net [219.196.184.76]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 73A6943D54; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 03:10:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by satie.private.org (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i7D39fXG013879; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 12:09:41 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 12:09:40 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20040813.120940.846948050.chat95@mac.com> To: ports@freebsd.org, freebsd@chillt.de From: NAKATA Maho In-Reply-To: <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> References: <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> <411AE7B3.5020009@chillt.de> <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> Organization: private X-Mailer: Mew version 3.3 on XEmacs 21.4.14 (Reasonable Discussion) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: truckman@freebsd.org cc: openoffice@freebsd.org Subject: please test 1.1.3 (editors/openoffice-1.1-devel rev 1.152) X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 03:10:34 -0000 In Message-ID: <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> Bartosz Fabianowski wrote: > Well, replying to myself, after a night of compilation, I can confirm > that the trivial CFLAGS removal makes openoffice-1.1 compile and install > nicely on -CURRENT. Good job! However, I don't have an acces to 5-current, I cannot test it :( Please test new openoffice-1.1-devel port. Makefile Revision is 1.152. I clean'ed up many patches which seem to be obsolated, and Makefiles also, and temporary disabled Mozilla subproject for 5-current, then cd files; perl generate.pl gives *full* build shell script of OOo. this port will be next openoffice-1.1 port (although I welcome any feedback). thank you very much, --nakata maho From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 13 07:44:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1BE316A4CE; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 07:44:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from satie.private.org (YahooBB219196184076.bbtec.net [219.196.184.76]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E92D143D2F; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 07:44:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by satie.private.org (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i7D7gSXG017204; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 16:42:31 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 16:42:28 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20040813.164228.730632177.chat95@mac.com> To: freebsd@chillt.de From: NAKATA Maho In-Reply-To: <411B7593.5050907@chillt.de> References: <200408120500.i7C50GIK019140@gw.catspoiler.org> <411B7593.5050907@chillt.de> Organization: private X-Mailer: Mew version 3.3 on XEmacs 21.4.14 (Reasonable Discussion) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: truckman@FreeBSD.org cc: openoffice@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: openoffice-1.1 build more broken than usual on 5.2-CURRENT X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 07:44:13 -0000 Hmm I suggest a solution for it. However, first of all, I still don't see the reason for doing so. The main port does not generate or change CFLAGS in any way, they are determined solely by the ports framework. Since mozilla is built by a sub port, this sub port will get the same treatment from the ports framework and IMHO come up with the exact same CFLAGS by itself anyway. Second, even if you pass CFLAGS inside a variable CFLAGS_FROM_MAIN, the sub port won't use them. It does not know about the variable and thus doesn't use it. And finally, if you really want to pass CFLAGS down to the sub port, would MAKE_ENV not be a better way of doing things? - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 13 08:56:52 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 46ABF16A4CE for ; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 08:56:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail024.syd.optusnet.com.au (mail024.syd.optusnet.com.au [211.29.132.242]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D577543D39 for ; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 08:56:48 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from PeterJeremy@optushome.com.au) Received: from cirb503493.alcatel.com.au (c211-30-75-229.belrs2.nsw.optusnet.com.au [211.30.75.229]) i7D8ud812889; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 18:56:41 +1000 Received: from cirb503493.alcatel.com.au (localhost.alcatel.com.au [127.0.0.1])i7D8uaxP013616; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 18:56:38 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from pjeremy@cirb503493.alcatel.com.au) Received: (from pjeremy@localhost)i7D8uYDr013615; Fri, 13 Aug 2004 18:56:34 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from pjeremy) Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 18:56:34 +1000 From: Peter Jeremy To: Bartosz Fabianowski Message-ID: <20040813085634.GD423@cirb503493.alcatel.com.au> References: <200408120119.i7C1JRbC018760@gw.catspoiler.org> <411AD533.6000406@chillt.de> <411AE7B3.5020009@chillt.de> <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <411B76BF.8000601@chillt.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i cc: openoffice@freebsd.org Subject: Re: -CURRENT fixes X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 08:56:52 -0000 On Thu, 2004-Aug-12 15:55:11 +0200, Bartosz Fabianowski wrote: >shouldn't be anything to worry about. It's got to do with the scheduler changes and keeps getting better every time I cvsup world. In certain cases hyphen of paragraphs differs between systems. I made a snapshot of a text ordered into tree columns showing the differences: web.tvnetwork.hu/laszlokaroly/OOoIssues/hyphenation.png 2. Right-to-left rendering of Arabic formerly have been mentioned by Georg Wagner. I have the same problem: chars are in heap, however in certain font height it is correct. I made a pdf file from a test document showing the problem. Letters in black show the correct rendering, note that in some cases lines were correct in OOo, but in the pdf they went bad. The test doc is: web.tvnetwork.hu/laszlokaroly/OOoIssues/arabic.pdf 3. In some cases I cannot generate a ps output with "print to file", OOo crashes with the message 'an unrecoverable error occurred...' I uploaded a small .sxw regarding this issue: web.tvnetwork.hu/laszlokaroly/A_Szuudzsi_felirat.sxw The first two I think must be the problem of freetype. As for the third, I have no idea. Are these problems known or are there any solution? I have used the same settings, fonts, etc. on all systems. I did not say that the left is the correct, only that Win and Lin made the same differing from FBSD. Practically, if I make a correct hyphen under FreeBSD it does not work under GNU/Linux and Windows, but it should. And vica versa, a correct hyphen under GNU/Linux and Windows does not work under FreeBSD. >>3.
