You can safely eliminate ppc (motorola/ibm powerpc, i.e. apple's powermacs, ibm's rs/6000 and power architecture) the powerpc is not a variant of the i386 line but is a different chip altogether. I'm personally not sure what makes up the pc98 specifications, but on the pc's I have FreeBSD running on use the i386 arch and it runs quite well. Ed. I have a 15" AlBook and installed freebsd with peters instructions from install.html. That all works fine. Sometimes it freezes but I heard others have that problem too. I build a new world and a new kernel from -CURRENT. All that went fine. But the new kernel falls in the kdb when I try to start it with hw.syscons.disable=1. How can I fix that? The other thing is the USB keyboard. I read here that I can use an usb keyboard instead. But how do I configure that? (I can see the attach and detach msgs from the console). I've just put one up at: www.freebsd.org/~grehan/ppc-081304.iso The layout is a bit different than in the howto since I used dynamic-root binaries and BSD tar. One new feature is that this should be snag-bootable - hold down the 'C' key at boot-time and it should jump straight into the loader. It worked fine on a revA iMac. Had some problems on the old 366Mhz G3 iBook due to USB probing, and didn't test on the eMac since it is cranking through a "make release", which will make the manual procedure moot when a miniinst.iso is available. later, Peter. While I'm here, i would like to ask you a few questions: can you predict a time for having FreeBSD ppc -RELEASE ISOs ? what are the show stopper defects that prevent FreeBSD-ppc from becoming a Tier-1 Platform? Is syscons(4) support really far-far away? Looks like 'make release' is now working so I'll see if I can crank some ISOs out. > what are the show stopper defects that prevent FreeBSD-ppc from becoming > a Tier-1 Platform? Missing GDB. Documentation. No X. And as you're about to bring up: > Is syscons(4) support really far-far away You mean notebook keyboard/mousepad support ? (syscons is there today for USB keyboards). It's not that difficult, but it's been hard to find time to do it. And the situation won't improve in the next couple of months since I'm taking a break. So, unless it gets picked up by someone else, you'll have to wait 'til November at a minimum :-( later, Peter. But the freezes still happen. With your CD I still can't use a usb keyboard with my AlBook but it works with two different desktop models. On a dual G4 500 your new ISO does not boot. I think it is because the alias for the cd device is not properly set. But at least boot ide1:,\boot\loader works! Maybe you can reflect that in your install.html Denis From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Aug 14 20:41:24 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A204316A4CE for ; Sat, 14 Aug 2004 20:41:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from server1.astraldream.net (astraldream.net [69.20.5.160]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A81543D1F for ; Sat, 14 Aug 2004 20:41:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ssouhlal@FreeBSD.org) Received: from [192.168.0.12] (ppp-215-205.98-62.inwind.it [62.98.205.215]) (authenticated (0 bits)) by server1.astraldream.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id i7EKfG407704 (using TLSv1/SSLv3 with cipher RC4-SHA (128 bits) verified NO); Sat, 14 Aug 2004 16:41:20 -0400 In-Reply-To: References: <411D48D0.4000407@freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v619) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Message-Id: <449E952F-EE32-11D8-B454-000A95C4D7BC@FreeBSD.org> Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Suleiman Souhlal Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 22:41:07 +0200 To: Denis X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.619) cc: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: some questions X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 20:41:24 -0000 Hi Denis, > With your CD I still can't use a usb keyboard with my > AlBook but it works with two different desktop models. In Open Firmware the keyboard works. In fact, I answered the loader pause with the return key on the usb keyboard. You have the same laptop like me, right? (AlBook 1.25GHz). Does it work for you?
